Write Act Repertory is accepting submissions for our ongoing Play Festival based on the works and/or life of Edgar Allen Poe. Established in 1998, Write Act Rep has been presenting opportunities for innovative playwright. The Rep’s on-going mission is to produce and create original scripts developed exclusively for the resident professional artists in the membership. We are seeking these plays to fulfill our need for one of our varied festivals of plays that will be produced during our upcoming 2022-23 Season.
The Rep’s on-going mission is dedicated to development and production of original plays written exclusively for the resident professional artists in the membership. We encourage all our artists through the continued engagement and immersion in an environment of artistic safety, to forward the company’s mission as well as their own personal goals in the entertainment field. By providing an atmosphere of mutual respect for every discipline of the theatre, we expect the Guest Writers to be a very vital part of this process from casting/rehearsals to the performance aspects of the production. This will be further discussed with the Producing Artistic Director when an official offer is being negotiated.
Submissions: International. We are seeking submission from members and non-members. All scripts will go to our reading committee, with the final approval determined by a member of the Artistic Team and the Producing Artistic Director. All selected playwrights will have their plays produced in reading form, live or electronically, first at a selection festival. In the session the most highly rated plays will be mounted professionally at Write Act Repertory under the 50-seat Waiver Agreement in a full-fledged play festival called Friend or Poe.
Guidelines for Play Submissions
*TO BE INCLUDED WITH EVERY SUBMISSION: The Submission Form, cover letter, synopsis of the play, a full character breakdown, full scene list, author's history, genesis of the play and a maximum 200-word biography of the playwright. Please make sure that your phone and e-mail contact information is on the cover letter, too.
* Adaptations of existing novels/literary works, author must have production rights or material must be in public domain.
* Plays may have been “developed” and “workshopped” productions elsewhere.
* Scripts must be unproduced on the West Coast.
* Unpublished, World Premieres preferred, but will consider published international plays.
* Scripts based on original ideas are highly encouraged.
* Run time must be between 3-20 minutes.
* Should be 1-8 characters.
* Will be produced in a small theatre setting.
* Furniture and props that can be set up and struck within 5 minutes.
* Should not be light and sound cue heavy.
* General lighting washes with limited specials only.
* Approximately 15’ x 15’ playing area per location or set.

Playwrights Compensation: Small Royalty Stipend for chosen plays, with agreements signed for each script.
Other Notes: All scripts are placed in a special secured archive area in our members-only section for our Readers Committee, where it will remain unless indicated otherwise during the adjudication period.

If Playwright submits more than 3 musicals plays during a January – December calendar year, their $50 tax deductible contribution will be the maximum cost per year. A tax donation link will be sent prior to reading application process begins.
If your script is chosen, the Producing Artistic Director will contact you directly to go over the details of mutual expectations and to sign an agreement for your play. Each agreement will be negotiated on a play-by-play basis.

- Friend or Poe – Short Play Festival Currently Accepting Submissions
Edgar Allan Poe, an American writer, poet, editor, and literary critic. Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre. He is widely regarded as a central figure of romanticism in the United States and of American literature, and he was one of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story. He is also generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre and is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. Poe was the first well-known American writer to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career. Also explore the “Japanese Poe,” also acceptable - Edogawa Ranpo.

- World of Lovecraft – Short Play Festival - Currently Accepting Submissions
No tale of posthumous success is quite as spectacular as that of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, the “cosmic horror” writer who died in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1937 at the age of 46. The circumstances of Lovecraft’s final years were as bleak as anyone’s. Nowadays, it’s hard to imagine Lovecraft faced such poverty and obscurity. The author has not just escaped anonymity; he’s reached the highest levels of critical and cultural success. His is perhaps the craziest literary afterlife this country has ever seen. But it’s Lovecraft’s fictions, 70 stories, plus a number co-written with other authors—that provide the basis for his reputation. The spirit of these tales is perhaps most aptly conveyed by the meme with his face and the caption, “AND THEY LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFT… JUST KIDDING, THEY’RE ALL DEAD OR INSANE.
