UnDisposables seek short plays for Zoom performance

web site

Deadline: June 13, 2020

In light of the current, locked down state of the industry, the UnDisposables are bringing their much loved scratch night back, this time to be performed to an online audience via live stream on the evening of Saturday 4th July.

We are opening our arms once again to emerging writers, directors & actors to take part in this cyber event. Interested? Great! Let's explain the details...

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
  • Eight pieces of new writing by different writers
  • A team of directors to take on a scene (or two!) each
  • A company of actors to bring these pieces to life
All scenes or monologues must*:

Fit within the theme of independence (this does not mean it literally has to be about Independence Day)

Be no longer than 5 minutes when read aloud (approx. 4-6 pages)

Contain only one or two actors (actors can multirole)

Be suitable for being performed live online (this does not mean it has to be about lock down, be creative with the form!)

Be rehearsed online by the successful actors and directors for at least 5 hours prior to the performance

* Scenes submitted which do not fit the brief will not be considered

All applicants must be available on the 4th July for the full company rehearsal (from 12pm - 3pm) and for the live stream performance (from 6:30pm - 9:30pm).**

** These times may change but the date will not

WHAT WILL YOU GAIN

All successful applicants will receive mentoring from an artist in their field experienced in virtual theatre

All successful applicants will be invited to a live Q&A about their piece following the performance

Every piece will be performed to an online audience via live stream, to get as close as we can to live theatre from a distance

Scratching the Servers is a place for growth, learning and professional experience which you can stick on your CVs and casting profiles. It’s also a great space to meet and work with like-minded creatives, which is especially crucial in these uncertain times.

Writer? Time to get those literary juices flowing and boldly share your work with others.

Director? Why not take on a virtual challenge outside of your usual comfort zone.

Actor? How about you exercise those acting muscles with a brand new character.

HOW WILL THE SHOW WORK

Online theatre is something which is very new and experimental, we're not going to pretend otherwise. The current plan is to perform every scene live via a Zoom webinar, which we will make available for up to 100 guests (excluding the artists involved). We will also be looking into the practicalities of live-streaming the show on Facebook.

We will be working hard to make this virtual show as close to the real thing as possible. We'll be putting together an e-programme as well as posting the usual casting announcements on our social media, like we normally would.

Tickets for the show will be entirely free, but we will invite anyone who is in the position to do so to donate what they would have spent on a theatre ticket to the UnDisposables. All money raised will go towards funding future opportunities for emerging artists.

HOW TO APPLY

You can apply for multiple roles (e.g. actor, director and writer if you're a superhuman!) and we will consider you for all you apply for, but you may not be guaranteed all the roles you apply for.

We have created a quick and easy Google form for you to complete. There are two versions of the form so make sure you select the correct one.***

This form is for all applicants who have an existing Google account.

https://forms.gle/Qxo3EL8UER7maNzA9

...and this form is for everyone who can't/doesn't want to create a Google account.

https://forms.gle/soH98keD917G3kwM8

***The reason for the two forms is because the first form requires you to sign into to a Google account to upload the required documents (scripts, CVs, etc). The second form is to allow Google-less people to still apply by sending these documents to us via email. Other than this small difference, the forms are identical, so don't worry about missing anything!

All is explained in the forms so fill them in and get in touch if you have any questions.

You can contact us on creatives@undisposables.co.uk****

****please only use this address for asking questions and submitting documents, not instead of completing the Google Form. If you send your full application to the email and not on the Google form, your submission may not be considered.

Please be aware that this is a voluntary project. Because of this, all rehearsals will therefore be scheduled around everyone's day jobs and other paid commitments. No one involved (including the UnDisposable Core Team) will be receiving any payment or expenses for their input to Scratching the Servers. Any proceeds made will go towards funding the future work of The UnDisposables, allowing us to continue to create opportunities for emerging creatives in the arts. By taking part you are not only helping to create new opportunities and work in the arts, but you'll also be meeting and working with a group of like-minded creatives and challenging yourself to try something new.

So what are you waiting for? Get applying! DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS 13 JUNE 2020
