We are currently accepting submissions of ten-minute scripts for consideration for the 2015 Ten-Minute Play Festival*.

The deadline for submissions is August 15th. 

Suggested themes that will be given preference are those that deal with issues related to the local region, its culture, diversity, and language. 

While anyone may submit their work, preference will also be shown to authors currently living in or from Miami south to Homestead.

The New Jersey Playwrights Contest of William Paterson University is pleased to announce the 13th Annual NJPC -  Musical Series (open to all in the northern NJ, tri-­‐state region).

The NJPC is seeking original works that have never been published or produced. We do accept those that have had workshops and readings. 

All styles and genres are welcomed (one-­‐acts, full length, comedies and dramas, etc.). The winners will be given fully staged productions in the 2016-­‐17 season. 

 The NJPC is committed to providing quality entertainment for the community through cultural education and inspiration. This contest helps bring new playwrights and composers and their work into focus in the community, the region and the state of New Jersey. 

 The NJPC offers the contest winners the chance to see their work fully realized on stage and is proud to have produced 15 original plays and musicals in our first 11 seasons! 

Here is how the contest works. Authors complete an entry form and follow the rules below. After review, those plays and musicals selected for the reading phase will be requested. Three finalists in each category (play or musical) are chosen for staged readings. The winning Play and Musical will be presented in Dec. 2016 and in April 2017 respectively. 

 The NJPC reserves the right to accept or reject any submission and reserves the right to declare no winner. 

 PLEASE NOTE: By entering the contest you grant the NJPC the rights, royalty free, to produce a staged reading of your work; permission to use your name and title of your work in all NJPC publicity and promotions; and the exclusive area rights to produce your work if chosen the winner of the contest. No other claims are placed upon the material. 

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES -­‐ For the 13th consecutive year we are not charging a fee to enter the contest! To enter, simply complete an Entry Form and follow the rules below.  

All entries must include a completed, signed and legible Entry Form  and support materials: bio/resume of the author(s); 

• a cover letter stating author’s availability to participate; 
• a brief synopsis of the show that includes the vocal requirements and any special needs; 
• and performance history, if any, of the piece.  

All entries must be received by the deadline date: July 27, 2015.  

A separate Entry Form must be sent for each musical.  

All entries must be electronic. 

Email your entry to: theatreseries@wpunj.edu with a “13th Annual NJPC” and your full name in the subject line. DO NOT EMAIL scripts, librettos or scores until requested.  

When requested, scripts, librettos and piano scores must be sent electronically in PDF format. If available, music samples should be in any standard electronic format. CDs are unacceptable. NOTE: All musicals must have a complete piano score for full consideration.  

A required interview with each finalist will be arranged after selection. At this time we are specifically seeking new plays and musicals suitable for staging in a black box theater – those with small casts and limited scenic needs are ideal.

New Play-Reading Festival Script Submission Deadline Extended

The Growing Stage Theatre has extended the deadline for script submissions for its 5th Annual New Play-Reading Festival!

This project is open to any unpublished and unproduced TYA scripts.

The New Play-Reading Festival is a wonderful opportunity for artists to have their unpublished works presented before an audience, in a play-reading scenario on two separate occasions during our 2015/2016 season.

Four scripts will be chosen to be featured in this festival. The initial play readings will take place November 13th through 15th. The second set of readings will take place February 26th through 28th. After each reading, there will be a dialogue among the audience, performers and playwright. After the second round of readings, one of the four scripts will then be selected to be presented as part of The Growing Stage Theatre’s 2015/2016 season!!


The Growing Stage Theatre is committed to creating and presenting professional theatre for young people and their families and to provide them with the unique and affordable opportunity to share a fun, culturally significant moment in an intimate and special venue, The Historic Palace Theater. Young people are also given the opportunity to grow as performers by working alongside professional actors as part of the theatre learning experience.

Shows usually require a minimum of 4 characters/performers; there is no maximum, provided that if necessary, doubling is OK with the playwright.

The Players Follies Group seeks 10-minute plays

With the Senior Play Reading Festival announced for this coming October, The Players Follies Group is on the hunt for material, putting out the call to local playwrights and writers of all sorts for original short play submissions to populate the festival.

“We didn’t want to do plays that were already published, we would rather call on the community,” said Follies acting coach and festival coordinator Cinda Goeken, adding that the festival has reached out the community for four years running and never been disappointed. “We’ve always had a very enthusiastic number of people submit.” In the intervening years since it began, the festival has grown and today some submissions come from as far as Germany.

In addition to being original and unpublished work, plays should be between 1-10 minutes in length and call for no more than eight performers to produce. Musicals will not be accepted, but authors may submit up to three plays for consideration at no cost. Prospective playwrights should also keep in mind that the Follies is a 55 and older troupe and submit accordingly.

New this year, the festival will have a theme for its submissions – “Plays on the Front Porch” and “Plays on the Back Porch” – corralling prospects for a more coherent festival. “We wanted to shake it up a bit and not get the same old kinds of plays,” said Goeken. “Make it a little more interesting and definitely different.”

The deadline for submissions is July 31, at which time bound and typed copies must be within the Follies’ hands, with selected plays announced by Aug. 29. Typically twelve or thirteen plays are selected.

Random Access Theatre Company is accepting scripts for consideration for their 2015-2016 reading series RAWR (Random Access Workshop Readings).

What is RAWR?

RAWR develops new theatrical work from emerging New York City-based writers in a three-stage process over six months. Random Access Theatre will provide direction, space, actors and mentorship through a series of progressively larger events beginning with a small table read, continuing with an invited audience read and finally a larger public staged reading. After the staged reading, Random Access Theatre Company may consider producing the work as a part of the following mainstage season.

Three scripts will be accepted on a rolling basis, the deadline to be considered for the first reading of 2015 is July 15th. RAWR is highly interested in theatre that imagines and reclaims work and themes of the past as a way to engage in modern issues. Traditional and non-traditional plays, musicals, and plays with music and/or movement are all welcome. Due to the heavy focus on script development, early-stage work is most appropriate for this series. Women, people with disabilities, and people of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

Roister Doister Publishing is committed to finding and nuturing new writing talent. One of the ways in which we will do this is through competitions. Our first competition will be a search for new plays for young people. Anything goes with regards to the content, themes and genre of the play and we're looking for entries that are as daring as they are creative. There will be two categories for the 2015 playwriting competition.

One Act Plays for Young People

1. The work must be 25-50 minutes in length.
2. The minimum number of cast members involved in the play is two.
3. The work must not have been previously published.
4. The work may have been performed prior to entry to the competition.
5. Entry to the competition will be free.
6. Written feedback on each work will be available at a cost of £10. There is no obligation to request feedback on the work and it will have no bearing on the outcome of the competition.
7. The winning entry will receive their own publication deal with Roister Doister Publishing for 5 years as well as an advance of £100.
8. The top five works will be features in a compendium of plays published exclusively by Roister Doister Publishing for 5 years.
9. Authors may submit up to five entries each.
10. The deadline for submissions will be midnight on the 3rd July 2015.
11. Winners will be announced on the 1st August 2015.

Proscenium Theatre Journal

Proscenium accepts original plays of any length and style, original adaptations (as long as the rights for the adapted work are secured) and musicals. We also accept articles about playwriting and theatre.

Submission Procedures

We only accept submissions via email. Please email your original play or article to submissions@prosceniumjournal.com with the subject “Submission: [Title], [Author.]” We would like you to submit your play as both a Word Document and PDF file (If you cannot convert your play into a Word Document we are fine with just a PDF file, but we will request a Word Document if your play is accepted for publication). In addition, please submit a brief, 100-word author bio. If your play has been produced, please feel free to send us information about production history and production photos.

The deadline to be considered for the third issue of Proscenium is August 1st, 2015. However, we accept submissions year-round and will consider them for future editions.

Postcard Theatre's New Writing Competition.

1. All the scripts MUST be new writing, by which we mean, previously unperformed by any other company.

2. The scripts MUST have a performance run time of between 60 and 90 minutes.

3. The script MUST require a cast of no less than 2 actors but no more than 5 actors.

4. There is no restriction on the age or gender of the characters.

5. There is no restriction of the style or genre of the pieces but they MUST be suitable for fringe production.

The Process

The deadline for scripts to be submitted by is 5pm on Friday 21st August 2015. This is is to allow for writers to have time to write something new should they wish to, and have time to complete that process. However we will accept scripts at any time prior to that, and hold them until the deadline.

Round 1

During this round, a Postcard Theatre panel will read all submissions and compile a shortlist to move to the next round.


Round 2

We will submit our shortlist to a panel of external professionals who are not from within Postcard Theatre and who will shortlist further


Round 3

The playwrights who have scripts on the external panel's shortlist will be asked to select an extract which will then be presented to a public audience & panel in the form of a rehearsed reading. The audience along with a panel will decide on two scripts to take forward into the final round.


Round 4

The final two scripts will have a longer extract presented to a public audience & panel in the form of a rehearsed, read performance. The combination of audience and panel will decide on the winning script & playwright.


What You Can Win...

The winning playwright will have their script turned into our next, full Postcard Theatre production. We will also award £50 to the winning playwright for the performance rights covering the full run of the production.

North Park Playwright Festival

Our goal in building the North Park Vaudeville and Candy Shoppe was to provide a small theater to produce new, untested plays. In support of this goal we have produced the North Park Playwright Festival each October. The festival provides a platform for brand new, short (ten minute), plays written by playwrights from around the world. Over the past twelve years more than 400 new plays have been produced. We encourage new directors and actors to become involved in theater through the festival as well. Through the North Park Playwright Festival over ninety playwrights, directors, and actors each year are able to showcase their talents. We invite interested playwrights to submit work to the festival. 

Please follow the guidelines below.

We are looking for:

1. Short new plays (no more that 12 pages, less is fine) that are easily staged and have casts with no more than four people. Our theater is very small and we normally use a minimal set concept in this festival. We have to be able to change sets in just a few minutes as we do six to seven plays each evening of the festival. We don't have space for large casts.

2. We request new work. A play that has had workshops or one or two previous productions is OK, but we are not interested in work that has been produced in numerous other places. Our goal in building the theater was to have a place to produce brand new work and let playwrights have a chance to see their work done for the first time.

3. We seek complete plays rather than excerpts from a larger work.

4. Work will be chosen by the directors we have in the festival. It is not a "contest" and we are not really judging plays in the formal sense. The directors choose the plays we will produce, within the production budget guidelines we give them.

5. Most subject matter is OK. We don't do nudity or off color humor.

6. We ask that all submissions be sent to us via snail mail at the theater. Address is: North Park Vaudeville and Candy Shoppe, 2031 El Cajon Blvd., San Diego, CA 92104, Attn Summer Golden, Artistic Director. We have too much trouble with differing email, word processing, and computer platform issues to take them via email. Additionally, our selection process requires the directors read the plays submitted and the cost of printing all the plays we receive each year is prohibitive. Please insure submissions have a title page with complete contact information (including email), a character summary, and are in proper script form. There is no charge to enter.

7. Submissions must be postmarked by June 30, 2015. Please do not send plays by any method that requires a signature from us. We are not often at the theater when delivery occurs. We will email notice of receipt to all playwrights submitting plays.

8. Send only one script. Multiple submissions do not increase chances of production.

General information:

We are trying to support new work and involve actors, playwrights, and directors of all experience levels. We have had a wide variety of artists involved from very experienced to first time directors and actors, to an 8 year old playwright (very short, well received play). We feel having a wide range of experience involved helps the new people learn from the more experienced.

NEW PLAY SUBMISSIONS FOR SUBURBAN HOLIDAYS 2015

Quannapowitt Players, Inc. is seeking one-act play submissions for our fourth Suburban Holidays production of new holiday plays the for November/December, 2015 Production.

Suburban Holidays explores the theme of the holiday season (in whatever form that means for the playwright) in a town “very much like Reading, MA.” As this festival is being produced in November/December, a preference for date-appropriate holidays (Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, etc.) may come into play; however, all holidays are appropriate material for this festival.

This year’s festival will consist of 4-5 full one-act plays. This means that plays under 20 minutes will not be considered. Plays must be no less than 20 minutes and no more than 45 minutes in length when performed. PLEASE NOTE: If your script is fewer than 20 pages long, the play reading committee will discard it without consideration.

Since this festival draws a large pool of talented actors, plays featuring more than 4 characters will be considered first. Larger cast plays are strongly encouraged!

Preference is given to playwrights from New England, though any playwright may submit. If you are not a resident of New England, your play will be considered, but we do give preference to our area, to increase the chances of having the playwrights visit and see their plays in our festival.

Modern/contemporary plays are given preference. Costuming restraints might not allow for period pieces at this Festival.

Plays must be submitted electronically in MS Word or PDF format, written in standard play format to the festival Producing Director, Patrick Cleary at patrickjamescleary@gmail.com. Paper copies of plays will not be accepted.

Submissions must be received by noon on July 31, 2015.

Plays must be the original works of the playwrights and unpublished at the time of production. Preference is given to unproduced works, but works with limited production runs will be considered.

Original musicals will be considered, though musical accompaniment will be restricted to a keyboardist, should a musical be produced.

Playwrights whose plays are chosen for production will receive an honorarium of $100 for the festival.

Playwrights whose pieces are chosen will be notified via email no later than August 15, 2015. Selections will also be posted here on the Quannapowitt Players website.

- Publicity for the event will be handled by the Cloverdale Playhouse. The winning playwright may be asked to participate in preparing the event and any media/marketing relating to the event.

While all reasonable care will be taken, the Cloverdale Playhouse cannot accept responsibility for loss of, or damage to, submitted scripts.

The Northern Writers' Project

The Northern Writers' Project is a week-long playwriting intensive where four plays are workshopped with the playwrights, directors, actors and audience. There will be a full week of rehearsal for each play leading to two public readings of each play with talkbacks after each reading. The Project will give playwrights a chance to develop their plays more thoroughly while showcasing their talent. Playwrights from all over the country are welcome to submit.

The 2015 Northern Writers' Project will be held August 31-September 6.

WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO?

IN PREPARATION, you should:
READ the book if you haven’t already
WATCH our video interview with playwright Dawn King on her process of adapting Brave New World for the forthcoming tour, as well as her advice on how she would approach this writing challenge.

GET WRITING:

Write a final scene for your own imagined version of Brave New World. This should NOT be a dramatised scene of the book’s actual ending. Instead it should be a scene (no more than FIVE minutes) created from your own imagination that takes place either BEFORE or AFTER or as an ALTERNATIVE to the book’s existing conclusion.

WHAT DO I GET?

All submissions will be published online here. The overall best ten submissions – as judged by writer Dawn King and producer Jenny King – will be invited to take part in a very special, one-day, playwriting workshop*, led by renowned writer and actor Nigel Planer.

PLUS, if you submit before 7 September 2015, you may ALSO be in the running to have your scene given a professional rehearsed reading on stage at one of the show’s eight touring venues.**

*Note: The workshop, which will take place in Birmingham in January 2016 (date tbc) is free of charge and includes lunch and reasonable travel expenses (within the UK). Accommodation is not provided. ** To be considered for a rehearsed reading, your script must involve no more than THREE characters; otherwise, please limit yourself to FIFTEEN characters.

Radio Drama Revival Submission Guidelines

Radio Drama Revival is dedicated to showcasing the best of modern audio drama, though “modern” can be interpreted loosely, as the show has featured work as far back at 1980 before, and even, on occasion, Old Time Radio (OTR) remakes.

By “best,” we mean work that we feel effectively showcases the vitality of the audio drama medium. This means meeting broadcast standards of audio recording quality, music, sound effects, dialogue, mixing, and more important than them all – story. After all, the story is the reason anything is happening at all.

We’re particularly excited by work that shows a command of the audio medium and creates a uniquely audio experience – something that could not be quite the same in print, film, or stage.

Mark Time-winning audio dramatist Jonathan Mitchell explains well what we’re looking for:

Radio drama offers an opportunity for a purer form of radio — it doesn’t exist to talk about something else or interview someone about their thing. It is the thing.
What Do We Want?

We’re not looking for clever sound effects or awesome music. Even great actors do not alone make great radio. We want audio that tells stories well, and embrace the diversity of storytelling forms out there. RDR has featured comedy, contemporary drama, mystery, fantasy, science fiction, speculative fiction, theological fiction and, of course, blood-curdling horror. The show DOES go out on broadcast radio at WMPG FM in Portland, Maine so while challenging subject matter is encouraged, gratuitous violence, language, and sex usually don’t work out. We also don’t generally feature pure comedy – though work that is funny is very welcome!

Programs that are 30-60 minutes tend to work best, though on occasion longer shows have been featured in multi-part episodes, and series have been featured in excerpts. RDR also usually features interviews with the producer and/or writer and actors.

You don’t get paid for broadcast on Radio Drama Revival. However, you reach an audience of thousands of audio fans and gratuitous links to your website. The typical Radio Drama Revival episode is downloaded over 5,000 times.

Podcasts are usually archived in perpetuity, but if for some reason you need the link taken down after a certain amount of time, that’s fine, just let us know.

StageCoach Theatre Company seeks scripts for young audiences

At StageCoach Theatre Company, we are looking for original scripts for murder mystery dinner theatre performances.

• Scripts should be written for 5-6 actors and include both men and women.
• Total duration of the show including dinner and question-and-answer period from the audience should be approximately 2.5 – 3 hours. This is roughly 45 pages.
• Show should have little or no set or technical requirements since shows will be performed in open rooms and restaurants.
• Murderless mysteries are fine, too. They can be aimed at adults or at older children (10+).
• All of our murder mysteries are PG13. Children’s mysteries should be PG rated.

We are also looking for original scripts for our Theatre for Young Audiences. These can be new stories or clever adaptations of traditional favorites.

• Scripts should be written for 5-15 actors and include both men and women. Children age 12+ may be included in the cast but the show should be primarily adults acting for a young audience.
• Show should be approximately 1 hour with no intermission.
• Show should have simple set requirements which can be easily transported.
• Rating should be G or PG. Primary target audience would be 5-12 years old.
