Wireless Theater Company Submission Guidelines

Website

We make up to five productions from unsolicited scripts a year. If you have a script you would like us to consider, please send over a ONE PAGE (or less) pitch containing:

– A synopsis of your idea

– Why it would work as an audio drama

– How many characters you expect it to have and a short paragraph about you as a writer.

Please send these embedded into the body of the email to info@wirelesstheatre.co.uk.

We are a very small team, so we are not able to respond to all submissions, but we do read every submission received. Here is an example of our preferred Audio Drama Formatting Sample – ideally all scripts would follow this format.

Writers retain copyright of their scripts, WTC own the copyright of the production. Accepting an offer of production with us means you agree to this.

Due to the high number of submissions we receive, you will only hear from us if your submission is successful. In 2019 we produced four original audio dramas (one series) from writers who submitted scripts via the above process.

AUDIBLE/BBC

We are mega proud to be regular content creators for Audible UK and BBC Radio 4.

If you have an idea you’d like us to pitch to Audible, please send us a short half page pitch, highlighting in particular why you think your drama would work for their platforms (they look for long content in particular) and with a rough outline of the story.

If you’d like us to consider pitching your idea to the BBC, please supply a 250 word pitch. The BBC audio drama guidelines for 2020 can be found here.

ONCE ACCEPTED..

Your scripts may be edited for structure, typos and continuity. You may occasionally be asked for re-writes.

Due to the high number of productions we already have lined up, it may be many months before your script is produced. But it will be worth the wait!

COMPLETE PRODUCTION SUBMISSIONS

Wireless Theatre offer a small fee to licence your complete high quality radio play to host through our site. We are interested in hearing your high quality MP3 formatted audio drama. To be considered for inclusion, please submit your high quality MP3 with a 600×600 pixel high quality cover image. Your work should not include copyrighted music.

Playwrights' Center Many Voices Fellowship

Website

Deadline: November 18, 2021

The Many Voices Fellowship is intended to support early career Black playwrights, playwrights of color, and/or Indigenous playwrights who demonstrate extraordinary potential, artistic vision, and a commitment to spending a year in residence in Minnesota developing their work with the Playwrights' Center in community with other fellows. The fellowship is additionally supported by a professional theater artist mentor. Past mentors include Martine Kei Green-Rogers, Christina Ham, Daniel Alexander Jones, and Mark Valdez.

Many Voices Fellows will receive a $20,000 stipend and $3,000 in development support. Fellows spend a year-long residency in Minnesota (July 1, 20-June 30, 2023), working in an individualized and hands-on way with the Playwrights' Center artistic staff—some of the most experienced and connected theater professionals in the country. Beyond the financial stipend, the fellowship includes year-long support through workshops with professional directors, dramaturgs, and actors and through the connections the Center makes between playwrights and producers of new work. This holistic and customized combination of financial support, connections with other artists, and professional connections is career-changing for most playwrights.

Applicants must reside in, and have the legal right to work in, the U.S. during the fellowship term. Applicants may not have had more than one play fully produced by professional theaters at the time of the application. Productions that open after November 18, 2021 do not count. (Note for 2020, 2021, and 2022: any programmed/announced productions cancelled due to COVID-19 don't need to count towards your production limit. Please be sure to mark cancellations or postponements clearly on your resume) Fellows commit to spending the fellowship period in Minnesota and actively participating in the Center's programs. Housing and travel are not provided. Playwrights may not receive more than two Many Voices Fellowships. A previous Many Voices Fellow applying for a second fellowship must submit a different play than the play that accompanied the previous successful application. Recipients may not receive other Playwrights' Center fellowships during the year.

Each application will contain the following pieces:

-Application Form

(including contact details, eligibility, and demographic information)

-Playwriting Resume

Please mark clearly which productions (if any) meet the criteria for being "fully produced by a professional theater." Professional productions are defined as productions for which the author and primary artists (actors, directors, and creative collaborators) were reasonably compensated and that received at least ten public performances each. Ten-minute or one-act plays and university, college, secondary school, amateur, and Equity showcase/waiver productions are not considered full professional productions. Productions that open after November 18, 2021 do not count. (Note for 2020, 2021, and 2022: any programmed/announced productions cancelled due to COVID-19 don't need to count towards your production limit. Please be sure to mark cancellations or postponements clearly on your resume.)

-1 page Artistic Statement and Goals

This is a one-page artistic statement and description of your goals for the fellowship year. While contextualizing your current artistic life, please describe your artistic goals for the fellowship year. The fellowship offers time to write and develop work with professional collaborators—and the opportunity to utilize the many and varied resources of the Playwrights' Center, including career support, connections with artistic leaders, and teaching and community engagement. In what specific ways would this fellowship impact your artistic growth? How prepared are you to fully take advantage of this opportunity? This statement, along with your script, should help provide insight into your vision as a theater maker.

-Full-length play script

A full-length play generally runs at least 45 minutes. If you are hoping to submit a script that is shorter than 45 minutes in length, please contact Julia at juliab@pwcenter.org to discuss. All script submissions must be written only by the applicant—no co-written submissions will be accepted. Scripts for musicals may be submitted by the book writer only. The submitted script must be a complete draft that represents your best playwriting.

-Two letters of recommendation

Please request two letters of recommendation from individuals who are familiar with your work as a playwright. Letters must be received by the application deadline: November 18, 2021. You will be sending a request through the application portal below.

Questions may be addressed to Artistic Programs Manager Julia Brown at juliab@pwcenter.org.

Premiere Play Festival seeks full-length plays

web site

Deadline: November 15, 2021 11:59 PM

Premiere Stages is committed to supporting emerging and regional playwrights by developing and producing new plays. Since 2005, the Premiere Play Festival has offered playwrights the opportunity to develop their work in an encouraging, focused environment through discussions, rehearsals, readings, workshops, and Equity productions.

Through the Premiere Play Festival, Premiere Stages has developed many plays that have gone on to have successful productions in New York and at regional theatres throughout the country. We strive to facilitate relationships between writers and theatre professionals who we think will respond to their work, in hopes that plays developed at Premiere will go on to subsequent productions. We offer Play Festival winners the option to retain the coveted “World Premiere” brand on their plays. Additionally, Premiere’s productions are consistently reviewed, scouted by major publishing houses, and honored by the American Theatre Critics Association.

To fulfill our commitments to writers whose presentations were postponed during 2021 social distancing procedures, we will be carrying plays submitted in last year's cycle into the 2021 season. Please see below for guidelines to submit for the 2022 Play Festival.

Premiere Stages will accept submissions of unproduced plays written by playwrights affiliated with the greater metropolitan area from September 1, 2021 through November 15, 2021. All plays submitted to the festival are evaluated by a panel of professional theatre producers, directors, dramaturgs, playwrights, and publishers. Four finalists are subsequently selected for public Equity readings in March 2022.

Awards

Following the Spring readings, one play is selected for an Equity production in the Premiere Stages 2022 Mainstage Season and receives an award of $2500. The runner-up receives a 29-hour staged reading and $1000. The two other finalists will each be awarded $750.

Premiere Stages is committed to supporting a diverse group of writers; playwrights of all backgrounds, ages, and experience levels are encouraged to apply.

Submission Guidelines
  • All plays must be submitted as a PDF.
  • Plays must be full-length and have a cast size of no more than eight.
  • Plays must be unpublished and unproduced (readings and workshops are okay), with no productions and/or publication currently scheduled through September 2022.
  • Playwrights must have strong affiliations with the greater metropolitan area (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Delaware).

Call for Experimental Theatre Playwrights: CUT / EDGE

NYC, 2022

Playwrights, Application Deadline December 1st, 2021

Final decisions by December 31

Please send a writing sample (10 pages), artist statement and resume to
Cut Edge Collective <cutedgecollective@gmail.com>

Join us in 2022 in NYC for our third season.

We meet twice monthly, on the second and third Tuesdays of each month. On the second Tuesday of each month, we will hear the work of a single writer out loud (read by actors) and discuss this writer’s work.

On the third Tuesday of each month, we will engage in a moderated philosophical discussion about where we’re at in terms of style, form, the direction of theatre/art today etc. Each accepted writer will have the chance to suggest a topic for the monthly salon, and lead the discussion.

We will be meeting virtually, until things open up and then we will be going back into rehearsal rooms for the meetings.

The Dirt

Upon invitation, the rate is $125 for the year. This covers space to meet for an entire year and a modest stipend for the actors who’ll read our words during the workshop meetings.  Additionally, it will help defer costs for our annual 10-minute play Festival, available to  all accepted writers.  (Our 2021 cohort will be presenting their work at the Tank, 312 W. 36th Street, Feb. 21, 22 and 24, 2022, 7 pm).

The Breakdown
  • To participate, you must be an experimental theatre writer. What do we mean by this? You must write for live performance and you must be in the process of creating something that isn’t “conventional.” This departure from normative theatre can include dialogue, structure, staging, character and/or character development, format, passage of time or any other manner of pushing at theatrical boundaries. Teach us something.
  • The Cut Edge Collective currently has only a few available slots.  Playwrights will be selected based upon the quality of the work submitted and experimental nature of the work.
  • If you’re in New York City and able to commit to monthly events in Midtown, as well as participate in our monthly salons, also once a month, and write experimental work for theatre, do send a sample, segment or example and tell us why you want to be a part of the collective.
And So Who Is This For
  • Experimental Theatre Writers
  • Able to Commit to Twice Monthly Meetings in Midtown Manhattan, through 2022
  • With Compelling Samples
  • $125 for Space, Actors and Ten Minute Play Festival (early 2023)

HOW TO SUBMIT FOR 2022

Electronic submissions only.
No fee to submit.

Plays are accepted for six weeks each fall.
E-mail your short play to:
OneActFest@TheTheaterProject.org
Include in the Subject line: “Submission + The Title of Your Play.”

Email submissions must contain this sentence in the body of the email:
“If my play is accepted and I choose to take part in the festival, I understand that I will be responsible for the casting and rehearsal of my play and that I will be charged a $100 participation fee.”

If Your Play Is Selected
The Theater Project will supply a stage manager/technical director to oversee the Zoom production.

Individual productions supply the actors, directors and make their own agreements with actors and directors regarding compensation.

NOTE:
Playwrights will be charged a $100 fee to cover the $500 prize as well as the cost of hiring the stage manager/technical director

About the Production Fee
The Theater Project does not charge a submission fee for its THINK FAST one-act festival.

We do, however, charge a $100 production fee to help cover the cost of the $500 prize as well as the hiring of a stage manager/technical director to work with the productions on their technical needs as well as supervise a rehearsal and record the final performance on TTP’s Zoom platform.

Although we would rather not charge a production fee, the reality is that without help from participating playwrights, we would not be able to offer this showcase for new works.

Purple Crayon Players 14TH ANNUAL PLAYGROUND plays for young audiences

Website

Deadline: November 5, 2021 11:59 PM CDT

APRIL 2022 - NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY'S EVANSTON CAMPUS

Purple Crayon Players (PCP) is pleased to present the 14th Annual Playground Festival of New Works this upcoming year! We seek to uplift new voices and stories in the theatre for young audiences.
WHAT IS PLAYGROUND?

PLAYground is a three-week play development process which culminates in a weekend long festival of staged readings, workshops, and post-show discussions of three new plays for young audiences.

PLAYground fosters the development of each script through partnerships between professional TYA playwrights and Northwestern undergraduate directors and actors, whether it is the work’s first reading or its final workshop before publication or production.

Purple Crayon Players sees PLAYground as an opportunity to empower new works and reexamine theatre-making practices to center care. We aim to help decolonize TYA by supporting artists with fewer layers of protection from oppression (vocabulary courtesy of Nicole Brewer’s Anti-Racist Theatre). Building a more equitable future begins with young people. We seek to expand what representation they can identify with and future worlds they can imagine. We recognize our own limits operating within a predominantly white institution and plan to work collaboratively with our communities to integrate listening and culturally responsive pedagogies into our processes and education. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or hopes for this process.

SELECTED PLAYWRIGHTS RECEIVE:

At least 15 hours of script analysis and workshopping by student cast and director before your arrival

Regular contact with your student director regarding the progress of rehearsals, tailored to meet your development goals
  • Assistance funding your trip to Evanston, IL, for the festival weekend
  • 2 days of in-person conversation, workshopping, and events with student directors, actors, and others in the Purple Crayon, Northwestern, and TYA communities during the festival weekend*
  • Staged reading of your script and facilitated post-show discussion with audiences
  • Post-festival feedback from audiences, student directors, and cast members

* At this time, Purple Crayon Players intends to host an in-person festival on the Northwestern University Campus in April 2022. Festival logistics are subject to change based on university, state, and local health guidance.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION:

Plays must be intended for young audiences (5-18 years old) - a play is not expected to appeal to this whole age range.

Scripts must be unpublished at the time of submission.

Scripts should be full length (at least 30 minutes) or intended to be developed into a full length piece.

Playwrights can submit up to 3 scripts. Each script must be accompanied by its own cover letter.

Musicals will not be accepted. Plays with music are permitted.

Plays will be evaluated blindly for semi-finalist selections.

YOUR SUBMISSION SHOULD INCLUDE:

A PDF cover letter detailing your contact information, production history of your play, your development goals for the play, and any other relevant information.

A blind PDF copy of your unpublished script. We request scripts without the playwright's name to avoid bias in the selection process.
TO SUBMIT:

Please fill out this Google Form to submit to the Playground Festival.

The deadline to submit is November 5, 2021 at 11:59 PM CST. Plays submitted after the deadline will not be reviewed.

SELECTION OF SEMI FINALISTS AND FINALISTS:

Purple Crayon Players will narrow our submissions to a group of semi-finalists in mid November. We will alert you by the end of November whether or not your play has been selected for semi-familist standing.

We select our 3 finalists in collaboration with our 3 student directors. Finalists will be chosen in mid-December/early-January. All 3 finalists and the remaining semi-finalists will be notified by the end of January whether or not your play has been selected.
