Missouri is seeking submissions for its second annual “Social Justice Shorts” one-act play festival

A Call to Conscience Interactive Theatre for Social Change in collaboration with Bread & Roses Missouri is seeking submissions for its second annual “Social Justice Shorts” one-act play festival. 

The company is seeking 10-minute short plays, monologues, musicals or plays with music centered with the following suggested themes (this is not an exhaustive list. Feel free to submit a piece featuring a social justice issue not mentioned here):

● LGBTQIA+ & Transgender Issues

● Mental Health

● Economic Justice/Workers’ Rights

● Police Brutality/Gun Violence

● Healthcare Equity

● Immigrant/Refugee Struggles

● Homeless/Unhoused Issues

● Age Discrimination

● Reproductive Justice

● Racial Justice

● Gender Justice

Storytelling must be rich in self-expression and theatrical imagination. Playwrights may live in any part of the country, and St. Louis-based playwrights are strongly encouraged to submit.

Plays featuring a cast of one to three characters will be accepted (plays with more than three characters will not be considered). Playwrights are welcome to submit solo performance pieces. Plays longer than 10 minutes will NOT be considered.

A pianist will be provided for musicals or plays that include music. However, plays that require a full band will not be accepted. Please note: All music must be original and not previously copyrighted by another party. The company is not liable for any copyright infringement.

Limited set, props and technical requirements are strongly preferred.

Playwrights please email: 

1) a bio or resume (100 words or less); 

2) entire play with original score if musical; 

3) title page/synopsis; and 

4) cast breakdowns

Submissions will be accepted now until January 1, 2025.

Plays will be judged on the following criteria:

● Plot

● Character Development

● Dialogue

● Clear social justice theme

● Overall writing quality & theatrically

● Can be produced within budgetary constraints

Kindly submit only one play; please choose your favorite. The play must not have had any productions or be published. Playwrights who submit will be informed of the results, regardless of the outcome, by February 1, 2025. There is no submission or participation fee. Playwrights will receive a $100 stipend if your play is accepted.
