web site
The Hive Collaborative is a new theater located in Provo, Utah. Ours is a cozy space, with a house size of about 80 seats. We’re looking for innovative new works to develop for production for our inaugural season. Here are some guidelines about what we’re looking for.
1. New. If it hasn’t been done before, that’s good. But even if it has, as long as it could still be considered in its development stage, that works, too. Whether you live next door or on the other side of the world (we’ve got Skype and we’re not afraid to use it), we’re looking to work with playwrights who are open to collaboration as we work with them on producing their play.
2. Innovative. We’re looking for new works that make us go “Wow.” We know that’s a bit vague. And we know we don’t have a body of work to show as an example of what we consider a wow. We think a wow involves more than a good story with strong characters (as vital as those elements are), but something that’s also a little bit extra. It might involve some clever technology. It might involve something immersive. We came across this link for Spaceman, and that was a concept that made us go wow (while making us mad we didn’t think of it first). So … yeah, something wow like that, but different.
3. A good fit physically. The Hive stage measures about 38 feet wide and 20-ish feet deep, and that includes wing space. Hence, we’ll probably not be looking for something right now that requires a lot of big sets and set pieces and a huge cast. On the other hand, we’re fans of short-throw, rear projection backdrops, so it doesn’t have to be a black-curtain blackbox, but that option is available as well. Our back-wall default set, for what it’s worth, has been made to look like the back alley of an old brick building.
4. Fits our sensibilities. We appreciate social commentaries on the condition of the world today as much as the next person, but we lean toward works that foster optimism and hope, which seems like folks could use these days. We tend to favor material that is clean, though that doesn’t always have to mean the subject matter has to be all ages appropriate. Work that moves us. Or makes us laugh. Ideally both. A kids’ show could work, too. Musicals, too.
5. Full-length. We’re aiming for a running time of something between 75 and 120 minutes.
6. Submission window. The submission window is open from April 1, 2018 until we find the script we’re looking for or July 31, 2018, whichever comes first. Update: As previously announced, the submission deadline for plays to be considered for our inaugural play was April 21, 2018. However, submissions received before or after that date will be considered for other production windows during our inaugural season. One submission per playwright, please. Don’t forget to include your name and contact info on the title page. If we get too far behind with submissions, we may press “pause” on the submission button below. But when we catch up, we’ll un-pause it until we find what we’re looking for.
7. Submission. Please complete the following form, then send the first 30 pages of your script as a PDF via the email link below. Upon reviewing your pitch material below and the first 30 pages, we may request that you send us the full script.
8. Notification. We’re sorry, but we’re unable at this time to follow up with every playwright who submits. If you don’t hear from us, please don’t hate us. We hope you will consider submitting to us again during our next submission window.
9. Prize. We will award at least one play in 2018 a $1,000 prize up front. In addition, if we proceed to production with the show, we will remit to the playwright 10% of the ticket sales or $1,000, whichever is greater, payable after the close of the show.
10. Multiple Winners? If we find more than one project we would like to pursue, yay us! And we reserve the right to award the same arrangement as indicated in #9 to more than one play.
