Sacramento Area Playwright Competition


PLEASE NOTE:  this opportunity is only for playwrights in the Sacramento California Area.

Competition Rules and Procedures

Rule #1:
Any un-produced local playwrights are welcome, provided they live within the counties of Sacramento, Yolo, Placer, Solano, San Joaquin & El Dorado

Rule #2:
Your submitted script must be written in English and must not have been published or broadcast. Public stage readings are accepted.


Rule #3:
First Prize: $100.00 with a Thistle Dew Stage Production,

Rule #4:
Submission: one (1) original one-act play with a minimum 35 minutes and a maximum 45 minutes.*
*(Playwrights may be asked at a later time to extend their play to full-length for evening production.)
Rule #5:
Submissions must be in .doc format.

Rule #6: 
 The Package.
All submissions must include:
a. Playwright’s résumé,
b. History of any development the script has received thus far,
c. The premise of the play,
d. Plot outline for the basic structure of the play (character arcs, conflict, et cetera),
e. Either your script pages must be numbered or lines numbered for actor ease of reference,
f. Your script must be in standard play-script format.

Rule #7:
All genres accepted.
Not Permitted: nudity or excessive use of foul language, or plays using guns as props will not be considered.
Comedies, dramas, radio plays, children's plays and musicals are accepted, but content should be suitable for Thistle Dew Theatre audiences.
Rule #8:
Entry deadline is 9:00 am, March 31, 2016.
Procedure a.) 
Your script, to ensure the integrity of the competition must be submitted in the same email twice: once with your copyrighted identification and once without identification, but identified by an entry number sent to you via email response from Thistle Dew Theatre. 

Procedure b.) 
All submissions will be read by local community theatre professionals who will read those submissions without identification of the author.

Procedure c.) 
The winner of our prize will be announced at 9:00 am, April 14, 2016.

Procedure d.
Two plays will be chosen: the Prize Winner and the Runner-up.
