The Lark is committed to providing access to all playwrights, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, experience, or agent representation. The Open Access Program encourages the development of new voices for the theater by seeking plays that reflect diverse and vital perspectives.
A volunteer committee of readers known as the Literary Wing carefully reviews and evaluates submitted work according to the Lark support criteria. The plays that receive strong recommendations and generate enthusiasm during this process advance to a final committee that ultimately selects a slate Writers chosen for Playwrights' Week are provided with creative teams including a director, professional actors, and a resource person for ten hours of rehearsal time to address specific development goals, culminating in an informal presentation in order to share their work with an audience.
This annual program serves as the Lark's central entry point for new play submissions.
*Given that one of the primary goals of our Open Access program is to increase the number of writers we serve, alumni who have previously presented work in a Barebones, Studio Retreat, Public Reading or Playwrights' Workshop are not eligible to submit. (Writers who have ha Roundtables or participated in Playwrights' Week can apply.)
