HBMG Foundation Playwrights Retreat

web site

WHO CAN APPLY?

You have to be at least 20 years of age and envision yourself as a playwright. We don't teach you to write. Rather, we provide a safe environment in which to write and commune with fellow artists. You have nothing to prove to us.

Nitty Gritty: we do not allow for late arrivals or early departures in fairness to other applicants who can stay the entire week. You must provide your transportation (drive yourself to Creede, or fly via Boutique Air into Alamosa, CO's airport where we'll pick you up). We provide housing, but not food. If you can get yourself here and get yourself fed (there's a grocery store across from your housing and great local restaurants), we’ll provide the gorgeous scenery, accommodations, and a few tourist treats! Write, network and recharge.

This is not a competition; we want artists to create.

HOW CAN I APPLY?

This is the easy part. We don't read scripts. We are interested in you. Complete the form and tell us about you... your background and what you want to accomplish while on retreat. Include both professional and personal descriptions.

Please note whether you are applying as a playwright, artistic director, dramaturg, director, or as a team. You are welcome to apply as a team if you are working specifically with an actor, director, composer, or dramaturg on a piece in progress. Give us details of what you will be working on during the retreat and your weeks of availability December 2019-February 2020.

Deadline for applications is September 1, 2019.

There is no application fee; do not submit a writing sample.

WHEN CAN I COME?

HBMG Foundation invites you for one week in the timeframe of December 29, 2019 - February 2020. We’ll provide accommodations, a script reading, and tourism activities.

You may elect to have your work read aloud by professional actors in a private salon setting. All readings are cold. This is done intentionally to focus on your text, not the actors' performances. After the reading, your work will receive feedback from actors, staff, and other retreat participants. You may request a private dramaturgy session. We do not expect your work to be completed. In some cases, you may only have a few scenes in development. The cold reading may be at the beginning of the week so you can do rewrites, or near the end of your stay so you can hear what you’ve accomplished

Alice Judson Hayes Writing Fellowship

web site

This application is exclusively for the Alice Judson Hayes Writing Fellowship. Applicants interested in applying for 2020 residency opportunities must also apply under the "2020 Residencies" category.

The Alice Judson Hayes Writing Fellowship is an annual award in memory of Alice Hayes, who created the Ragdale Foundation in what had been her family home. All her life she was committed to working for a just and peaceful world. An 18- or 25-day residency, free of charge, and a $500 stipend will be given to a writer who is working on a project designed to bring awareness to a contemporary issue having to do with peace, social justice, education, or the environment. Projects can be nonfiction or fiction (including journalism, essays, memoir, script-writing, creative nonfiction). No academic writing.

Application deadline is May 15, 2018. Applications are submitted through the Submittable online portal for the Alice Judson Hayes Fellowship, a category separate from the regular application deadline. Notification is in September 2019, with the residency taking place during 2020.

For an 18- or 25-day fellowship in 2020, apply by 11:59 PM CST May 15, 2019.

ELIGIBILITY

Ragdale encourages applications from artists representing the widest possible range of perspectives and demographics, and to that end, emerging as well as established artists are invited to apply. While there are no publication, exhibition or performance requirements for application, applicants should be working at the professional level in their fields.

Ragdale encourages artists of all backgrounds to apply, and does not discriminate against anyone on the basis of age, disability, gender, origin, race, religion, or sexual orientation.

GUIDELINES

All applicants submit electronic materials through the Submittable application portal.  Please note the following requirements to complete your application:

  • A completed online application form.
  • Two current letters of reference from people who know you personally and can address your professional capacity and suitability for a residency in a working community with other artists. Reference letters are confidential and are submitted electronically through Submittable. Reference letters are due 11:59 PM CST June 1, 2019.
  • A one-page artist’s statement and work plan explaining your work and what you plan to do while in residence.
  • A one-page CV or resumé that summarizes your professional background.
  • Work samples that show previous work from the past 2-3 years. All media is acceptable. Most electronic file types and sizes are accepted.

Work sample demonstrates quality, technical proficiency, and is professionally presented.
Artist’s statement and resumé show evidence that the applicant’s work is reflective of continued, serious, and exceptional aesthetic investigation in the chosen medium.
Work plan demonstrates that the artist will maximize the benefits of a residency at Ragdale.
References reflect the artist’s ability to work well in an artist community.

PEN America Writing for Justice Fellowship 2019

web site

PEN America’s Writing for Justice Fellowship will commission six writers—emerging or established—to create written works of lasting merit that illuminate critical issues related to mass incarceration and catalyze public debate.

The PEN America Writing for Justice Fellowship aims to harness the power of writers and writing in bearing witness to the societal consequences of mass incarceration by capturing and sharing the stories of incarcerated individuals, their families, communities, and the wider impact of the criminal justice system. Our goal is to ignite a broad, sustained conversation about the dangers of over-incarceration and the imperative to mobilize behind rational and humane policies. As an organization of writers dedicated to promoting free expression and informed discourse, PEN America is honored to have been entrusted by the Art for Justice Fund to engage the literary community in addressing this pressing societal issue.

Applications Open: April 1, 2019
Deadline to apply: May 15, 2019

GUIDELINES

Please read the following closely, as our application requirements have changed.

The Writing for Justice Fellowship is open-genre, and proposed writing projects, which must be authored by the applicant, may include—but are not limited to—fictional stories; works of literary or long-form journalism; theatrical scripts; memoirs; poetry collections; or multimedia projects. The most competitive applications will demonstrate how the proposed project will engage issues of reform, fuel public debate, crystallize concepts of reform, and facilitate the possibility of societal change. As part of our mission to stimulate discussion, emphasis will be placed on proposed projects that show strong promise for publication. Fellows must commit to contribute actively to bringing attention to their work and that of other Fellows. The Fellowship is open to writers at any stage of their career. Currently and formerly incarcerated writers are highly encouraged to apply, and special provisions will be made for incarcerated writers to participate through alternative methods.

Fellows will receive an honorarium of between $5,000-$10,000, based on scope of project. Modest expense budget requests up to $2,500 will be additionally considered. Fellows will be paired with a mentor to serve as a source of guidance for the project, and the cohort will convene in person twice during the course of the Fellowship. PEN America will draw on the Writing for Justice Advisory Committee, as well as its network of agents, editors, publishers, partner organizations and outlets in order to assist efforts for publication and dissemination of the work of the Fellows. Opportunities for sharing the created work through public forums will be organized in New York City at the PEN World Voices Festival, in the Fellow’s home community, and possibly additional locations.

FELLOWSHIP TIMELINE

The first eight months of the Fellowship are designed for Fellows to research, create, and connect with mentors and the cohort, working toward submission of a polished final product that is ready for publication. The final four months of the Fellowship will focus on placing the works for public dissemination and opportunities for Fellows to present their work publicly.

April 1, 2019: Application opens
May 15, 2019: Deadline to apply
Late September 2019: Applicants notified of final application status
September–May 2019: Fellows work on their projects, meet with mentors
October TBD 2019: Cohort meeting #1 (NYC)
February, TBD 2020: Cohort meeting #2 (Location TBD)
Early May 2020: PEN World Voices Festival event featuring works in progress
Late May 2020 Work completed and submitted for publication
May–August 2020: Placing work and local public presentations

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for this Fellowship, the applicant must be

  • 21 years of age or older.
  • An individual writer. Collaborative projects are acceptable, but only one project lead may apply and participate in the Fellowship’s activities.
  • Residing in the United States during the Fellowship duration.
  • Available to participate actively in all dimensions of Fellowship programming, including mandatory gatherings and public programs. (The Fellowship will cover costs associated with these events, separately from the Fellowship honorarium and travel/research budget.) Currently incarcerated writers and formerly incarcerated writers restricted by parole will participate through alternative means.
  • Able to demonstrate a track record of successful projects brought to completion on time.
  • Membership in PEN America is not required.

SELECTION CRITERIA AND PROCESS

Given the highly competitive nature of this Fellowship, we advise using discretion in your project application. As a literary Fellowship, awarded projects must center writing as a critical mode of expression in the work, rather than a secondary or supporting aspect of the project. Applicants should be the main writer/creator (rather than editor or compiler) of the work. Fellows will be selected on artistic merit, the project’s approach and potential for impact, and the feasibility of project to be fully completed and in polished, publishable form within the given time frame. Applications will be reviewed by PEN America and expert advisers through an anonymous process.

Applications close May 15, 2019. Fellows will be announced in fall 2019.

With the participation of foreign creators, local artists and cultural institutions in Geneva, this project aims to create an interactive network that will encourage the development of new approaches and reflections.

The conception and production are important stages and we offer the public the possibility to follow them and to engage with the artists in order to better understand their practices.

We place a particular focus on the quality of our projects and we consider our activities as tools for emancipation and alternatives to globalized culture. Our role is to offer support and a space for innovative and critical practices that engage with these fields and form a part of the reflection of our society.

Exhume call for submissions

web site

Drama: Submit up to 15 pages in one document. Please ensure that you have a cohesive format.

We strive to publish visual art, poetry, prose, and drama in order to help writers who discuss queerness and trauma find a home for their works. Though we especially seek submissions that discuss these topics, we accept good writing across the board. We appreciate work that speaks to the human experience on a raw level. Consider works like Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl,” Jo Ann Beard’s “The Fourth State of Matter,” and John Cheever’s “The Swimmer.” Above all else, we want writing that makes us feel something. Writing can be traditional, experimental, or a hybrid of the two. Surprise us!

We accept both established and emerging artists and writers across the board. We welcome simultaneous submissions, though we ask that you let us know immediately should your submission be accepted somewhere else. At this time we do not accept previously published work.

All submissions should be emailed to exhumeliteraryjournal@gmail.com.

Please list the genre you’re submitting under in the subject of your email, as well as your first and last name. Please paste your third-person bio, maximum 75 words, in the body of your email and submit your works as attachments in .doc or .docx format. All documents should be submitted in 12 point fonts.

Seeking 10-minute plays to commemorate Stonewall

web site

Seeking 10-minute plays (or shorter) to be curated for an evening of short works to commemorate Stonewall.

There is no limit to the number of submissions each playwright can send.

If it's a scene from a play, it has to be edited so it can stand alone and be a play.

PLEASE NOTE: Just because a work has LGBTQ characters, it does not mean it's appropriate for this call.

***The work must directly relate to the community struggles and fight for civil rights prior to and up to June 1969, or have a direct correlation to Stonewall, not just a mention.***

Please do not send marriage equality plays set in in the past decade and please don't try to change the dates or pronouns to force an existing play into this context unless you're going to do actual revision. I will be able to tell.

To further assist in weeding out inappropriate entries, please include a three-sentence synopsis in the body of your email.

Deadline May 1, 2019

If you want to write to a specific moment, that would be awesome. I already have one about Frank Kameny's firing, but any other pivotal moments are fair game. I'd love to run them in a timeline up to the big event.

The show will run Buffalo United Artists in June for six performances over three weekends.

Pay is $30.

Send submissions and questions to buasubmissions@gmail.com.

We are seeking plays that will benefit from further development, and playwrights who are excited about engaging with us through the development process. Please do not submit plays that have had an extensive development history or that have had multiple productions.

Please note that our submission process has changed. Read on for details and FAQ’s.

Staged Reading Program Overview:
The Staged Reading Series at 5th Wall Productions is a part of our new play development process. Each month, one previously unpublished and unproduced play will receive a staged reading, followed by a  a critical response session with the audience. At the end of each season, TWO of these selections will be chosen to receive a workshop production.

FAQs:

What kind of plays are you looking for?

5th Wall is currently accepting submissions of full-length, unpublished, unproduced stage plays. The plays do not have to be production-ready. In fact, most of our choices are in need of further development. Our mission is to give these development opportunities to new pieces,  and 5th Wall staff will work closely with the writers to improve the work. Submissions will be judged for overall quality, length, style, and producibility. We strive to find plays that tell new stories, ask tough questions, provoke thought, and challenge both actors and audiences. Submissions are not exclusive to local playwrights, though some  preference may be given to writers who are able to attend the reading.

How do I submit?
Please submit a 10-page sample of your script in PDF format. Submissions should be e-mailed to our literary manager at: 5thwallsubmissions@gmail.com.

Is there a fee?
No!

What do I need to include with my submission?
In the body of your email please include:
Name
Address
Phone number
Synopsis
Character breakdown
Development history
Any specific feedback you would like from the 5th Wall staff and/or questions you would ask the audience during the talkback session at a reading
Optional: a brief biography

How should my play be formatted?
There is a great resource on play formatting by Samuel French here.

What is the deadline for submission?
Submissions for the 2019-2020 season will close at 11:59 pm EST on April 30, 2019.

When will I find out if my play is selected?
Writers will be automatically notified by email when we have received your submission.  Due to the high volume of submissions we can not guarantee an individual response.
If your play is chosen for a Staged Reading, you will be notified by July 31, 2018.
If at any time you would like to receive an update on the status of your submission, feel free to send an email to 5thwallsubmisisons@gmail.com.

When are the readings presented?
Staged Reading Series events are typically held on the third Sunday of each month (with the exception of November and December). Scripts are assigned a director and a cast, and in most cases scripts are given two rehearsals during the week prior to the reading. Writers are invited to attend the reading and rehearsals either in person or through web based video conferencing, but it is not required.

What happens in the Critical Response session?
The model we use for the critical response talkback was developed by Liz Lerman, and is used by many institutions including the New York Theatre Workshop. It is structured in a way that ensures that feedback remains constructive and to the point. The four steps of the Critical Response Process are:

  • The audience is asked to make statements of meaning regarding the work.
  • The writer asks questions of the audience.
  • The audience then gets to ask questions of the writer.
  • Members of the audience ask if the writer would like to hear opinions or suggestions about certain aspects of the play. The writer must give permission for the opinion or suggestion to be heard.

Are writers paid for staged readings or given compensation for travel?
We do not offer pay or travel stipends for staged reading participation. We feel that the benefit of the program is the development opportunity itself. Participation is voluntary for all involved. Writers who are not local may participate in the process through online video chat.

What happens next?
5th Wall will select TWO of the Staged Reading Series scripts to be workshopped into full productions in the following season. Writers will again be invited to participate in the workshop process, which will typically be the first two weeks of the six week rehearsal period. Writers are also welcome to attend a press-preview and opening night of the production. Writers will be compensated 10% of ticket sales for workshop productions.

What if my play has already been produced or published?
You are submitting to a development opportunity. Published plays will not be considered. Plays that have had previous productions will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Please detail the play’s development history (including any productions) in the body of your email.
