Spring 2024 Online and In-Person Classes at Primary Stages ESPA!

Spring 2024 classes at Primary Stages ESPA are open for enrollment! We’re excited to announce online AND in-person writing, acting, and directing classes. Here are just some of the classes in our lineup of opportunities in the writing department:

The First Draft - In-Person and Online!

Instructors:

Gina Femia (Writer, Kilroy’s List and Leah Ryan Prize honoree)

Matthew Paul Olmos (Writer, a home what howls at Steppenwolf this season)

Caridad Svich (Writer, OBIE Winner for Lifetime Achievement)

This class will guide you through the development of your first draft, providing concrete deadlines, constructive feedback, and a collaborative environment to get your ideas on the page.

Rewriting Your Draft

Instructors:

Calamity West (Writer, Roundabout/Underground, The Goodman, Williamstown)

Stefanie Zadravec (Writer, The Electric Baby)

As soon as you finish your last line of dialogue, the need for rewrites begins. This class will help you tackle the revision process and develop a stronger version of your play.

Fundamentals of Playwriting

Instructor: Tasha Gordon-Solmon (Writer and Director; Faculty, NYU Tisch Dramatic Writing Program)
Build a toolbox of the fundamentals, so your first play (and each play you write after that!) can be built on a strong foundation.

Writer’s Lab - In Person!

Instructor: Mêlisa Annis (Writer, Director, and Dramaturg; Faculty, NYU Tisch Dramatic Writing Program)

Run like a professional playwriting group, this class will give you the community and support you need to move your play forward.

Screenwriting

Instructor: Daniel Talbott (Writer, "The Conners"; Artistic Director, Rising Phoenix Rep)

Explore the components of screenwriting, particularly focusing on structure, form, and language, and begin to develop a first draft of your screenplay.

The Business of Theater

Instructor: John Gould Rubin (Artistic Director of The Private Theatre, Creator and Director of Turn Me Loose)

This 5-week class is for theater artists of any discipline to learn about theater as a business in order to produce your own work and better understand the priorities for your work no matter your role within a production.
