Latinx Playwrights Circle 2022 Intensive Mentorship

Website

Deadline: December 15, 2021 at 11:59 pm

SUBMISSION FORM

We are so incredibly excited to announce the submissions for the 2022 Intensive Mentorship officially open! It has been a long road this past year, full of uncertainty for artists, as well as complex conversations on what American Theater is and who American Theater Audiences are. We at the Latinx Playwrights Circle are enthusiastically committed to our community. We are so thrilled at the prospect of taking four experienced peers in our community, partnering them with four amazing emerging playwrights, and facilitating the development of four new plays.

Participants of this program can expect to work one on one with Migdalia Cruz, Carmen Rivera, Cándido Tirado, and C. Julian Jiménez in a tailored mentorship designed to focus on the individual needs of the play. Along with an Artist Stipend and mentorship, participants will be able to take selective classes at The Primary Stages Einhorn School of Performing Arts (ESPA) as an additional source of feeding the artistic process. While it is a goal for us to lead in Latinx play development, we also understand and are committed to nurturing the needs of an artist and not just their voice. Over the course of the two-and-a-half month intensive, there will be two in-house table reads as well as an industry reading at participating theaters as a capstone to the program’s goal of inserting artists literally into institutions. Below are guidelines for the submission process.

Includes:
  • Mentorship
  • Artist Stipend
  • Artist-Residency at LPC
  • Bi-weekly Writing Group for 2.5-month intensive
  • Access to selective Classes at ESPA (Primary Stages' Artist Classes)
  • Industry Reading

Submission Guidelines
  • Must be of Latino/a/x/e descent.
  • Must be NYC (or tri-state) based.
  • Must have attended at least two NYC Latinx Playwrights Circle Sunday Service (virtually or in-person).
  • Must submit an excerpt from a full-length play (no one acts or short plays at this time). While we'd love to support musicals, at this time we are unable to offer the support musicals need for development.
  • This is a blind submission, please make sure any identifying information is removed from the 10-15 page excerpt and the corresponding full-length play.
  • Play should require no more than 6 performers (double casting is fine).
  • Excerpt and Full length must have a title page and character breakdown. These will not be counted toward the 10-15 page sample requirement.

How to apply:

Select a 10-15 page excerpt of the play you’d like to work on during the Intensive.

Create a Blind Summary Statement page that includes the following: a. synopsis and possible themes you are exploring in the play, b. previous development the play has received, (if any), c. what kind of feedback is most conducive for your writing process (Liz Lerman Critical Response, prescriptive, etc...), d. what are you hoping to gain from your connection with one of our mentors. Make sure to put the title of your play on this statement at the top of the page.

Create a Blind Full-length play that corresponds with your excerpt. Make sure it comes with a title page and cast breakdown. If you have any questions regarding submissions, please contact us at: nyclatinxcircle@gmail.com. Please note we may not be able to assist with questions on the day of the submission deadline so ensure to get your questions to us with time.
