Matthews Opera House presents: Call for Plays for Production

Matthews Opera House seeks submissions of scripts (60-100 minutes) to be considered for an April 2013 production. The script may or may not have been produced elsewhere but they would like to be able to market it as a premiere or regional premiere. They also would like to host the playwright for the final few days of rehearsal and a couple of performances. The playwright would travel and arrive on day 1, attend two or three days of final rehearsals and be available for a couple of marketing appearances (local newspapers, radio or tv), a reception on opening night and a post show discussion the following evening - most likely one week including travel days. The theater will pay travel expenses, provide lodging and a daily per diem. They do have a budget for paying royalties based on community theater rates. MOH is not a wealthy theater. Production budgets are small and actors come from the community. Actors, directors and support personnel are not compensated financially for their time and talent. This opportunity is open to writers in the US and Canada. 

DETAILS

The community is not racially diverse so non white characters are a challenge to cast. The strongest portion of the acting pool are middle-aged although younger as well as older actors do occasionally audition.

We're wide open on genres. However the play should have a theme, or themes, that will resonate with our audience. Extreme or offensive material will not be suitable. This audience is intelligent but not necessarily sophisticated. A majority of the audience will not have attended professional level productions and will struggle with edgy material.
