The LIVING ROOM SERIES is The Blank’s New Play Development Program

web site

Since its inception in 1991, LRS has been giving artists of all levels an opportunity to grow and stretch their talents in a safe and nurturing environment.

Presented nearly every Monday night from Labor Day to Memorial Day, the Living Room Series presents new plays free to the public. These are “workshop” presentations and have a small rehearsal process.

They are not “readings” with actors getting one 2 hour rehearsal. These are “Workshops” which allow a rehearsal process and an opportunity for the playwright, director and actors to explore the material while putting it on its feet. They are simply staged, presented with “book in hand” (meaning actors carry scripts), and are a wonderful opportunity for audiences and the playwright to get a sense of the plays full presence and how it might be staged in a full production.

Submissions – Playwrights
The Blank accepts plays for consideration for our Living Room Series (workshops of new plays) via e-mail only. They cannot have received a fully produced production elsewhere. Plays must be full length.

The Submission Package should include:
A one page synopsis of your play (story and themes)
A character breakdown list (including ages and gender)
a 1 sentence logline (play description)
Twenty-page writing sample (FIRST 10 PAGES and representative/best ten pages of the play)

Please e-mail your submission package as a Word or PDF file to: info@theblank.com
The synopsis need not include every plot detail, but it should cover the setup, what's at stake, and how the story resolves in the last act.
Submission material will not be returned.

The work submitted must be entirely the property of the author. Reworks or adaptations of plays by other authors will be considered only if you control the rights or if the material is in the public domain.

No phone calls or personal deliveries will be accepted. We usually will read the material within three months, though we do not offer critiques on submissions.
Many times we are forced to pass on plays we admire because they don't fit our production needs. If your material looks right for us, we will contact you and request the full script.
