2020 PLAYWRITING COMPETITION – 22 MARCH 2020

The Rules:
  • Plays should be limited to roughly ten minutes in length. We’ll live with eleven or twelve minutes if necessary, but 15+ minute plays will not be read.
  • Only one entry per playwright.
  • Please use either Samuel French formatting or something comparable. The specific details don’t really matter, but we do want something that results in about one page per minute.
  • Scripts must be blind, i.e. no author-identifying information of any kind anywhere in the file.
  • Files must be in pdf format.
  • File name must be the exact title of the script, with spaces replaced by hyphens, followed by a hyphen and then the last two digits of your phone number (as a random factor). Example: If Jane Smith (with phone number xxx-xxx-xx84) submits a play entitled “The Chess Game”, the filename must be “The-Chess-Game-84.pdf” (capitalization in file names does not matter).
  • Scripts should include a title page with the play’s title, a cast list with genders and any age requirements, and the setting.
  • An brief explanation of relevance, i.e. how the script addresses the topic/challenge, must be included in the submission form (we are sorry to have to ask for this, but past experience has shown that many people submit scripts that don’t have anything to do with the prompt, resulting in a lot of wasted time for the judges).
  • The play must be brand new and written specifically for this challenge. Existing or re-purposed plays are not permitted.
  • The playwright retains all rights to the script, but grants ICRL the right to record a reading of the play and to post that recording online.
  • The submission period ends on Wednesday at 9:00 pm (east coast U.S.A.)



Salem State University’s 10-Minute Playwriting Contest

Designated a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs, a Top College and University by Military Advanced Education, and a Best for Vets College by Military Times, Salem State values our military connected students and their families and the sacrifices they have made for our country. Salem State is committed to supporting Veterans’ voices on and off campus. The arts create unique and powerful opportunities for individuals and groups to share experiences and constructive dialogue. As such, Salem State is proud to announce its second annual Veterans Playwriting contest which will culminate in staged readings of selected plays in November 2020, near to Veteran’s Day.

All playwrights, regardless of military affiliation, are invited to enter Salem State University’s 10-Minute Playwriting Contest. However, preference will be given to those with a direct military connection. This includes: active-duty military, reservists, National Guard, Veterans, and direct family of any of these.

The theme of the play should directly touch on military service and/or how military service affects a community. The contest and festival look to recognize and celebrate those that have served and currently serve. We are looking to bring together a variety of voices exploring both the challenges and the victories and positive influences that Veterans have on our community.

Judges will select finalists, whose plays will be part of a weekend of staged readings in and around Veteran’s Day 2020, exact dates TBD. Our first annual festival was held in the Callan Studio Theatre at SSU in September 2019. This three-night festival was a huge success with eight staged plays, 4 professional directors, 20 professional and student actors, packed audiences, and vibrant community conversations.

Contest Rules

  • Only submissions through Submittable will be considered.
  • One submission per playwright.
  • Only original plays, not-yet produced or published, are eligible.
  • All plays are judged blind. Do not include any personal, identifying information anywhere on your submission. 
  • Musicals and adaptations are not eligible. 
  • Simultaneous submissions are allowed. If your play is accepted elsewhere, please let us know immediately. If your play is chosen to be performed, you agree to withdraw your play from all other places where it is under consideration. 
  • By submitting, you agree to allow Salem State University to produce the first staged reading of your play. 
  • Scripts meeting the rules and submitted by the deadline will be reviewed by judges.
  • Judging will be done by SSU faculty and members of the SSU Veterans’ community

Judging Criteria

Story

Plot seems fresh, intriguing and original
Something happens; sufficient conflict and tension throughout the play
Plot is active, vital and dramatic on stage
Story moves along; pace is engaging
Voice

Strong, interesting writing style
Clear viewpoint that’s well integrated into the play
Characters

Interesting and compelling characters
Characters seem credible and real
Main character evolves or develops through the course of the play
Dialogue

Dialogue suits the characters
Dialogue sounds natural and credible for the plot and location
Each character has own unique voice
Dialogue seems fresh and compelling (not dull, boring, or generic)

The play can be staged in the 10-minute time allotment in a black box theatre      with limited set, sound, and design.
Overall effect

Play is transformative and memorable

The script must be in standard playwriting format with 12-point Courier font. Use double spacing when changing from one character to another. Use single spacing everywhere else. If you are unfamiliar with standard playwriting format, please check out this example.

The On(line) and Off(site) Festival of New Writing is looking for short scripts

The On(line) and Off(site) Festival of New Writing is looking for scripts that explore relationships in a physically and socially disconnected world. Playwrights are invited to submit short scripts for consideration.

What we’re looking for:

  • Scripts no longer than ten pages (5-10 minutes running time)
  • Four or fewer characters
  • Written to be performed specifically in a video conferencing setting

Most importantly, there needs to be a reason why your play can only be performed in an online chat. Are your characters family who find themselves unable to be together for some reason? Is this a conference call amongst directors of a company? Is one of your characters at an outpost on Mars?

This isn’t a festival about the coronavirus. We want to see your creativity using the medium currently available to us to tell us compelling stories. The best scripts will be performed live (virtual space and date TBD).

Plays, performances and workshops

All participants will be paid for their participation to the Festival, after the submission of an invoice.

The payment amount will be specifically established on a case-by-case basis.

Other expenses linked to organization (f.e. SIAE, promotion, comunication) will be paid by the Festival.

All participants are guaranteed conventions for the accomodation and inland transfers. Moreover, their names will be in all our promotional material and they will be given the opportunity to enjoy all the activities of the Festival at a special price.

For any extra expenses, we can provide participants with the necessary certificates so that they could also ask for reimbursement in their own country.

Please bear in mind that the artworks must be related to the theme (Madness and Revolution), maintaining the nonviolent approach to conflicts as a reference point.

All applicants will receive a confirmation email. Due to the huge amount of applications received, we are unable to provide any feedback on unsuccessful applications. Only the selected applicants will receive a positive feedback.

Read carefully! The examination will be based on the full video of the performance: trailers do not count as video. Not sending the video means being automatically excluded from the selection.

This year’s theme: Madness and Revolution

The Festival is open to all contemporary artists. Special attention will be paid to innovative and interdisciplinary works.

San Diego REPertory Theatre is happy to accept scripts from agents and theater professionals with whom we have an existing relationship. In general, we no longer accept unsolicited scripts from unrepresented writers. However, we continue to offer an open submission policy for plays and musicals from Latino(a) writers across the country because we are committed to supporting today’s Latino(a) voices. In addition, local writers residing in the Southern California area may submit a query letter about their new work that includes a current email contact and:

  • A brief biography of your writing history, noting awards and production history
  • A paragraph about why your play is a good match for the San Diego REP
  • A one-page synopsis of the play including number of cast, genre & run-time
  • For musicals, please also include a CD with sample songs from the score

Our six-show season can include full-length plays, musicals with a small cast and band, solo pieces, and adaptations performed on one of two stages (250-500 seats) for about 4 weeks. Past programming has highlighted voices of the Latino, African-Americans, and Jewish communities. Before submitting, please make sure that your script is aligned with our mission. It is also advised that you attend some of our productions to become more familiar with our sensibility.

Trustus Playwrights’ Festival

The Trustus Playwrights’ Festival began at Trustus Theatre in 1988. This festival accepts submissions nationally from playwrights seeking production of a full main stage production at Trustus Theatre. Past winners include David Lindsay-Abaire, Jon Tuttle, Deborah Breevort, Stephen Belber, Andrea Lepcico, and Sarah Hammond (to name a few).

Trustus Theatre selects one new play annually as the winner of the Trustus Playwrights’ Festival. Submissions should be full-length non-musical plays that have small casts (6 actors or less) and modest design needs (no fly systems or pyrotechnics please). The festival is welcoming to experimental works. The festival prefers scripts that have not been produced, and that Trustus’ production have “World Premiere” status.

The winning play will be produced in August 2021. Beyond the production, Trustus will provide winning playwright with a $700 prize, and travel and lodging for previews and opening night.

Theatre Conspiracy Annual New Play Contest 2020

Please note; In order to properly handle all the entries we receive, we are capping the number of entries we accept at 400.

Entry fee waived for members of The Dramatists Guild, but proof of membership is required in email or snail mail.

Theatre Conspiracy at the Alliance for the Arts Annual New Play Contest cycle is open now through March 2020. All works submitted will be read and judged by a panel of qualified theatre teachers, directors and performers. Work submitted to the contest must be a full length play with seven actors or less and have simple to moderate technical demands. Play having up to three previous productions are welcome. No musicals please, as we are a tone deaf theatre company.

First place winners receive the Janet and Bruce Bunch Play Contest Award, $700 and a full production. However, it is our goal to produce more than one entry each year.

Guidelines:
  • To submit electronically, email your script to tcnewplaycontest@gmail.com. 
  • To send via snail mail, send complete script and check to the Alliance for the Arts ATTN: Bill Taylor 10091 McGregor Blvd. Fort Myers, FL 33919.

Princess Grace Fellowship

We encourage emerging playwrights to apply at the beginning of their careers so that through the New Dramatists Fellowship, they can develop their work as well as benefit from being a part of a unique, diverse, dynamic community of professional playwrights. An applicant’s status as an emerging playwright is evaluated during the adjudication process.

One playwright will be selected to receive:
• A grant in the amount of $7,500
• A one-season (September – June) artistic residency at New Dramatists, Inc. in New York City (For Award recipients living outside of the New York metro area, your on-site residency can be adapted according to your schedule with reimbursement provided for transportation costs to/from New York.)
• Inclusion of the winning script in New Dramatists’ library
• Advocacy for the recipient and their script to New York and National theatre communities for the duration of the fellowship, including opportunities to gather with the Princess Grace community, New Dramatists writers, and other theatre professionals
• Mentorship from a New Dramatists resident playwright for the duration of the fellowship
• Opportunity for winning play to be licensed and published by Samuel French, Inc.

Submission requirements:
• All candidates must be United States citizens or have permanent resident status.
• Eligible playwrights must not have had more than 3 public productions of their full-length plays mounted by a producing theatre.

Developmental readings and workshops, university productions, and self-productions are admissible.

You must submit one unpublished, full-length play (A full-length play is a single play that constitutes a full evening of theater. For example, a 90-minute intermissionless play is a full-length play.)
• There is no restriction on subject matter
• Co-written material will not be accepted
• No adaptations of previously published material

The Foundation is looking to identify and support original, authentic, unheard voices in the theater. The panel will consider the submitted play in terms of the originality of the storytelling, quality, and offering of new perspectives.

Scranton Fringe Festival 2020

The 2020 Scranton Fringe Festival will take place September 24th - October 4th in several venues throughout downtown Scranton.

We are a fantastic platform for creative works of performing arts and we invite all, from every corner of the globe, to apply to be considered for our 2020 Festival line-up.

Once again the Scranton Fringe Festival is thrilled not to charge ANY application fees - all are welcome to submit and share their submissions freely!

All productions will be compensated with 70% of their box office sales.

Madlab 2021 seeks full-length plays

At MadLab, we love reading new full length plays and we desperately want to read yours!

Comedy, Comedy, Comedy. Are you all okay? Why are you submitting so many depressing plays? We love a good drama but PLEASE submit more comedies. Life is hard enough, we're tired of crying and we'd like to laugh.

The nitty gritty about submitting your brilliant baby to the Lab:

All submissions should be sent to submissions@MadLab.net.  Please use “MadLab 2021 Season” as your subject.

We’re not picky about what format your script is in (though the standard Dramatist’s Modern Stage Play format is most welcome), so send us what you got as a Word or PDF attachment. Do not send us links to anything - we’re not going to click them.

Please be sure to include your name, address and contact information on your title page.
The submission window opens 2/6/20 and closes when we receive 500 submissions. Season decisions will be made by the end of 2020. While we would love to follow up with every playwright individually, we receive too many submissions to make this happen. If you don’t hear from us, we’re sorry and please submit again in the future.

We are only accepting 500 submissions with a maximum of 2 plays per playwright.

If you are submitting 2 plays, 1 must be a comedy, or at least absurd.

Plays should have a run time no shorter than 70 minutes and no longer than 2 hours 15 minutes. Please do not send us 45 page 1-acts or that 200 page beast you’ve been tinkering on for the last five years.  They will not be read.

We are currently not accepting Children’s Theatre pieces, Historical or Period pieces, or Musicals.  Not that we don’t appreciate them, they’re just not up our alley right now.

Please proofread your script before sending it to us. We hate to be “those people”, but nothing will get your script put down faster than a your/you’re or a to/too typo.

You will be Paid!  MadLab currently pays full length playwrights $200 up front and 10% of net ticket sales payable after close of show.

“But what are you looking for?”

What makes a play a “MadLab” play?  Like obscenity, it’s hard to define, but we know it and love it when we see it.  Here’s a few tips as to what we like to produce and what our audiences have come to expect:

Plays with a strong Point of View.  Our audiences expect to not only be entertained for an evening, but to leave the theatre with something to think about and remember.  We want to read plays from and for the marginalized and forgotten. We love new takes on old problems. We adore speaking Truth to Power.
Good Stories with Vibrant Characters.  Now, any play can have that strong POV, but the special ones show us that through strong storytelling and equally strong characters.  So, mesmerize us with your craft and enchant us with your characters. Bonus points for well written female characters and casts that give an accurate representation of our multiracial society, as well as those that challenge the concept of binary sexuality.  We’re not saying we won’t produce your play about 10 white suburban dads and their annual golf outing, but…

Plays that are Visual.  Ok, we’ll be completely honest – we are on a shoestring budget as far as sets/costumes go, but we’ve been doing this for 25 years and we love an artistic challenge.  MadLab is a 75 seat converted garage black box theatre, so plan accordingly. But challenge us. You’d probably be surprised what we’re capable of.

Plays that are modern. We definitely respect your historical masterpiece, but if your play involves iambic pentameter or greek gods it’s probably not our speed.

Make us Laugh.  We’ve been told we have an “offbeat” sense of humor.  We’ve also been told we may require psychological counseling.  Be bold in your comedy writing, don’t worry about offending us (or our audiences), and never be afraid of being silly.

Make us Cry.  See above.

Heck, do both with the same play.  Always the best option to our way of thinking☺

The Peoples Improv Theater (The PIT) is looking for projects for The PIT Loft Summer Series. Plays, musicals, solo performance, etc. - projects both finalized and in-progress encouraged to submit! No idea or concept too big or too small.

Productions receive:
-A number of guaranteed performances between June and Mid-September. Frequency and performance schedule based on the needs and goals of each production.  
-Dramaturgical, audience development, and press outreach support from The PIT's Artistic Team.
-Marketing support from The PIT's Marketing Department.
-A split of the ticket sales. Exact split negotiated with regards to each production's specifics.

Production guidelines:
-Projects are ideally under 90 minutes in length. Exceptions can be made at the discretion of the Artistic Team.  
-Projects are ideally without major scenic or storage requirements.
-Projects will perform within The PIT Loft's repertory schedule.  
-Projects are ideally low tech. The PIT does have repertory lighting, sound equipment, and projection capability in all of our spaces.  
-Artists are ideally located in NYC.  
-The PIT provides the space; artist supplies any production cost. Productions can be Equity or Non-Equity; Artist must apply to AEA for appropriate permissions.

Shawnee Original Playwrights Series seeks one-act and full-length plays 2020

Each year, Worthington Players will produce and perform the original work(s) of a playwright(s), chosen by our Executive Committee from among submissions received in our open contest and read before a live audience.

Submissions are now being accepted for the 2021 productions. Plays will be read over the summer of 2020 and the winners will be produced in 2021.

Production of Winning Play
Responsibility for final production of the play lies solely with Worthington Players.  The director will be chosen by the Executive staff of the Shawnee Playhouse.   No monetary prize or compensation is paid.
Each year, Worthington Players produces original submitted works of local and surrounding area playwrights.

A Light in Dark Places seeks short plays

If you are interested in submitting a play to ALIDP 2020, please check out the guidelines below.

You’re invited to submit a short-form play to be included in the 5th annual A Light in Dark Places: A Collection of Plays for Hope in accordance with National Suicide Prevention Month.

Selected plays will receive a six-performance run and a $75 prize.

Performances will be the weekends of Sept. 11th-13th & Sept. 18th-20th at the Stella Adler Academy of Acting & Theatre – Los Angeles in Hollywood.

ALIDP is a non-profit that using the arts to bring understanding, resources and hope to those affected by suicide. The plays are to explore themes of suicide prevention and mental health conditions with a focus on community, connection, hope, resources and healing.

Please DO NOT submit any plays that depict the act or glorify suicide, as that is not in accordance with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s safe messaging guidelines.

Up to six plays will be selected from the submissions. A standard option agreement contract will be expected to be signed by both parties upon selection.

Selections will be announced no later than May 15th, directors will then be assigned, and casting will commence in August. A four-week rehearsal period is expected.

To apply, playwrights must submit an original 5 to 15 page, double-spaced script via email to: submit@alightindarkplaces.org. Please include name, address and how you heard about us.

Submission fee will be waived for all applications received by 11:59pm PST, Friday March 13th.

 Submissions received between 12am PST, Saturday March 14th and 11:59pm PST, Friday May 1st will be asked to pay a $20 fee at www.alightindarkplaces.org/shop/submit

LaBute New Theater Festival High School Submissions

Winning plays by high school students will be presented in readings. The guidelines are straightforward: The one act should include no more than four characters featuring a clearly developed plot and distinctive characters. No longer than 15 minutes in length. Non-Professional, new and previously unproduced one-act play submissions should include a letter of inquiry and complete script.

The East Village Playhouse Premier NYC One Act Festival

The East Village Playhouse/Premier NYC One Act Festival is accepting submissions of one-act plays and musicals for its annual festival in May 2020 at the East Village Playhouse

The festival provides the use of the 30 seat storefront theater - including a small light and sound package -  for two days of tech rehearsals and two performances over one weekend, as well as inclusion in the festival press release and e-blast marketing, box office and ticketing services, front of house management, and one technical operator to run the light and soundboard. The festival will also be overseen by a producer and a general manager. The fee to participate is $500.

Participants must assemble their own creative team, stage management staff, and cast, as well as rehearse off-site, and cover the costs of sets, costumes, props, and any other production elements which are not part of the East Village Playhouse. Productions must be small in scope and cast size. Musicals must be able to be accompanied by a keyboard only.

OPEN WINDOW NEW PLAY FESTIVAL

Plays should engage with the themes of redemption, hope, and/or reconciliation, broadly interpreted. Plays which deal in a thought-provoking way with issues of faith and spirituality are particularly welcomed.

Selected playwrights will receive an honorarium for their participation in the festival. Plays will be presented as staged readings with professional directors and cast, and will be considered for full production in a future Open Window season.

Decisions will be made by Monday, April 6th.

This is Our Story: The Coming Out Monologue

interACT is thrilled to be partnering once again with playwright Tommy Jamerson to create a new work. This is Our Story: The Coming Out Monologues will be a project that we will be working on for the next several months in honor of Pride Month to be presented by interACT and a talented group of actors in June 2020 (exact weekend and dates tbd). The best part? The stories will come from you and will be dramatized by Tommy Jamerson and our Artistic Director, Nicholas J. Clarey.

We ask you to share your coming out story with us, keeping in mind that coming out is something that doesn't only happen once, but rather everyday. It is not something that only occurs when dealing with family. We have to come out to ourselves, coworkers, strangers, school administrations, and others. It also creates a shared story for those of us coming out and for those to whom we come out. It is not restricted to only Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual people; Pansexual, Asexual, HIV+, Transgender, Questioning, Allies, and others also have to do this too.

Help us to tell your story as our story.

Guidelines: 
- Please fill out the form online making sure to include your name and a correct email address so that we may contact you should your story be chosen!
- You may submit more than one story.
- You may submit multiple forms under the same name and email address.
- You do not have to write your story in monologue or dialogue format, as that will be done by the playwrights.
- Should your story be chosen for dramatization, names will be changed.
- We are seeking a variety of coming out stories, good, bad, various ages and ethnicities, culture specific, location specific, involving one person or several, etc. Please don't feel that you can't tell us your story because it may not be "good enough" or not stereotypical. There is nothing stereotypical about life, and this project should reflect that.
- The last day to submit stories is March 3, 2020.
