Dark Unicorn Productions submissions guidelines

Following a very exciting planning meeting at Dark Unicorn Towers yesterday, we hope it won’t be too long before we can make an announcement of our next production. It will be a revival of a major play but until we’ve sorted out some logistics we can’t say more than that!

However, we don’t want to restrict ourselves just to revivals, so we are also now accepting, on a rolling basis, new stage scripts from writers globally.

Our only requirements for new work are that it is a work for live performance, that the cast contains no more than five people, that it is at least 60 minutes long and that it conforms to our desire to create challenging, thought-provoking but above all entertaining theatre for the world we live in. We don’t want to be too prescriptive beyond that as we want to be as broad and progressive a company as possible and give an outlet to as diverse a set of contemporary voices as we can.

So, if you have a script you want considered, just email it to us at darkunicornsubmissions@gmail.com.

We will read everything but we sadly lack the capacity to provide a feedback service. Therefore we will only be in touch with authors whose work we are keen to discuss progressing.

Plays In Progress Series seeks full-length plays

Athena Project, located in Denver, Colorado, is proud to announce the call for submissions for its Plays In Progress Series (PIPS). This Series is an opportunity for new plays to be developed in one of three models: concert or table readings and our workshops.

Rehearsals and presentation will take place in Denver at a location to be determined over the course of approximately March-April 2020. Three to six new plays will be selected based on a blind submission process and given a dramaturg, director, cast and basic design elements during presentations. Scripts are accepted from March 1 – April 15, 2019.

Submission Guidelines are as follows:
  • Playwright must be a woman and may submit only ONE full-length script. Full-length is defined by at least 60 pages in standard playscript format.
  • Previously un-produced plays only. Scripts with prior workshops, readings or academic productions are accepted, but the script should be revised for the playwright to get the most from this opportunity.
  • Submission must include:
  • a. BLIND script in PDF format – PAGE ONE of PDF script MUST have TITLE, CHARACTER BREAKDOWN & SYNOPSIS of script, 200 word limit (This file will contain NO playwright contact info*)
  • b. Cover letter addressing: 1) what the playwright would like to accomplish working with a director, dramaturg and cast and 2) how she heard about the call for submissions
  • c. Resume 
  • Plays submitted without all supporting materials included will be disqualified.
  • We recommend the playwright be able to travel to the area for rehearsals as needed, and for at least one performance at her own expense. We will select 3-6 playwrights to participate in the PIP Series and hope to strike a balance between local and national work. Exact rehearsal and performance schedules will be worked out with the director, dramaturg, and playwright after all plays are selected. Travel stipends are offered.

*Contact information must be listed ONLY on resume and cover letter, not on the script, the first page of which will be its title, a character breakdown and a short synopsis (submissions will be read blind).

  • Directors and Dramaturgs will be selected by October 2019
  • Casting will be between November-December 2019

KC Melting Pot Theatre is now accepting short plays

KC Melting Pot Theatre is now accepting short plays (10-15 pages) for their inaugural New Works Development Festival. Six selected scripts will be assigned a director, professional cast and receive a week of rehearsals culminating in a short play festival at the end of the week.

One chosen play from the finalist will then receive a development opportunity to make their short play a full-length show and have a workshop production during 2020-2021.

The development process. At this time we are only accepting plays from African American / Black playwrights at this time.

Theme/topic can by anything however we are not accepting any musicals, children's stories or one-character plays.

1. One script per playwright

2. Please submit blind copies of your script (no identifying information on the script). Include playwright name and contact info in body of email.

3. Scripts should be in pdf or word document and written in standard play format. 12pt font in Times New Roman or New Courier.

4. Minimal tech and set requirements.

5. Playwrights will be responsible for their own travel and accommodations.

6. Submissions will be cut off after 100 entries.

There are no restrictions to eligibility, however plays must fit the guidelines of Festival and mission of theater Company.-- Primarily: Mental Health Issues, 2-5 characters, relevant to contemporary society.

There are no limits to number of play submissions.

Plays must not have been previously produced and/or published.

Curtis Theatre Page to Stage Playwright’s Festival

The Curtis Theatre announces a call for submissions to the inaugural Page to Stage Playwright’s Festival. This year's theme, “That’s What She Said”, aims to provide a platform for the female voice. Staged readings will run August 30 – September 1, 2019.

Page to Stage will feature one-act and full-length plays. The deadline for submissions is April 15, 2019.

Submissions are open to all playwrights with an emphasis on Southern California based artists. Writers interested in submitting plays should send finished scripts to PagetoStage2019@gmail.com with “Festival Play Submission” and the play title in the subject line. Included in the e-mail should be the playwright’s name, contact information, and a two-sentence synopsis of the play. There is no submission fee.

The purpose of the Page to Stage Playwright’s Festival is to nurture new plays and new playwrights by working with local burgeoning writers and to showcase their works for audiences in our community. Selected plays will be presented as staged readings on the Curtis Theatre stage as part of the 2019/2020 Season. The Curtis Theatre will also use the festival to find and develop material for future seasons. Authors whose manuscripts are selected will receive an honorarium, a written critique from a professional dramaturge, a DVD of the staged reading, and participation in a post-show audience discussion.

The 2019 festival is produced in partnership with Project La Femme. Project La Femme is committed to creating art that challenges dialogue while promoting and amplifying artists who produce socially engaging art projects. Their mission is to create and explore images and definitions of women through diversity, inclusiveness, and honesty.

Pre-submission writers' workshops will be offered in the evenings on February 21 and April 4, 2019. Actors' auditions are scheduled for August 5 & 6, 2019. CITY LIT ART OF ADAPTATION FESTIVAL (Chicago)

To submit a proposal for entry into the festival, send a .pdf copy of your adaptation script to Katy Nielsen at AofA@citylit.org.

Proposals must be submitted no later than April 8, 2019. Selections will be announced by April 15, 2019.

City Lit Theater will present THE ART OF ADAPTATION on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, May 31, June 1 and June 2, and is currently soliciting for pieces for the festival. Submitting playwrights may be located anywhere, but a connection to Chicago is strongly encouraged.

City Lit staff will select six to eight adaptations, each of which will be awarded $200.00.

The selected adaptations will be given two performances over the course of the weekend with performances on Friday and Saturday night and a marathon of all pieces on Sunday. A panel of judges will view the Sunday performances and award an additional $300 cash prize to the adapter of the piece judged the best of the festival.

The deadline for submissions is April 8, 2019.

THE ART OF ADAPTATION takes place at City Lit Theater, in the historic Edgewater Presbyterian Church building at 1020 W. Bryn Mawr Avenue. The performance schedule is Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, June 2 at 3:00 pm.


THE RULES:

1. The piece must be 20 minutes or less. If it exceeds the 20-minute limit, it will not be eligible for the prize.

2. The piece must be an adaptation of non-dramatic material—a short story, an essay, a memoir, poetry, an excerpt from a novel, a video game, and so forth; but not material from a play.

3. The piece must be a world premiere adaptation.

4. The adapter is responsible for any royalties that are due for the piece, as well as for any rehearsal or production expenses. City Lit does not provide rehearsal space prior to tech rehearsal, and does not provide the services of a director or any actors.

5. The piece submitted must be the piece performed - no drastic changes can be made to the script after it is accepted.

6. Each piece selected will be performed on the same simple festival set with the same simple light plot. A stock of furniture will be provided. The adapter is responsible for all scenic elements, furniture, costumes, etc.

7. City Lit has a stock of furniture, costumes and props that is available to adaptors. Adaptors must provide a $20 deposit for any stock used. The deposit will be returned in full when all items are properly returned.

8. City Lit will provide the performance space, festival stage lighting, backstage and front-of-house crew, publicity, programs, tickets and the cash prizes.

New Voices Fellowship Program 2019

The Lark is accepting applications for the New Voices Fellowship program, supported by The Jerome Foundation.

The New Voices Fellowship supports playwrights of color, age 30 or under, who demonstrate financial need. During a year-long residency, Fellows will work on multiple artistic projects through an individually-tailored program of Lark play development programs, and form relationships with other theatermakers at various career stages from all parts of the world. The Fellowship includes a cash award of $15,000, plus an Opportunity Fund of $3,000 for the purposes of travel, research, autonomous workshops, or other work-related expenses, along with access to a wide range of Lark resources, including artistic program participation, office and rehearsal space, and staff support.

In the 2019-20 cycle, The Lark will award two Fellowships.

Applications will be accepted from February 13, 2019 to April 15, 2019.  Selected fellows will be notified in June 2019.

The 2019 Fellowship period begins July 1, 2019 and ends June 30, 2020.

VISION

The New Voices Fellowship program is a critical component in The Lark’s acclaimed portfolio of fellowships. The portfolio is designed to engage a diverse community of extraordinary playwrights—at various places in their careers—who represent, collectively, a contemporary national vision. The Lark believes that targeted support to early-career playwrights from underrepresented backgrounds is essential to a culture of equity, access, and inclusion, and a national theater that represents the vibrancy of our collective cultural voices. New Voices Fellows will be in residence at The Lark as part of a community of artists at various career levels from across the country and around the world, gathered to explore and illuminate the most important issues of our time.

ACTIVITIES

Fellows will:

Work with Lark staff to identify individual artistic goals for the fellowship year, toward generating and developing new plays through a series of Lark programs appropriate to those goals;
Meet, collaborate, engage and work with a community of other professionals in the field, including playwrights, directors, actors, agents, producers, and other industry leaders as appropriate;
Participate in and/or observe a variety of Lark’s play development processes, whether on or offsite, including retreats, workshops, readings, etc.;
Receive support for the advancement and advocacy of work generated during the fellowship year, along with continued access to Lark development programs beyond the fellowship period.
FINANCIAL AWARD

Fellows will receive:

$15,000 fellowship stipend
$3,000 opportunity fund
Please note that the fellows will receive a Form 1099 for 2019 and 2020 and be responsible for their own taxes. Both stipends are taxable.

ELIGIBILITY

Fellowship applicants must:

  • Be legal residents of New York City;
  • Identify as playwrights of color, age 30 or under at the time of application;
  • Not be enrolled in a college, conservatory or advanced training program during the fellowship period;
  • Demonstrate financial need;
  • Make a case for how the Fellowship and participation in The Lark’s community would promote transformative artistic and professional growth.

  • A one-page Description of Financial Need, describing current income, expenses, and any outstanding financial commitments (such as student loans or other debt), including a statement on how the fellowship stipend might be used and why it would be transformative;
  • A ten (10) page sample of recent work that best represents you as a playwright (Sample may be an excerpt or self-contained 10-minute play). Finalists will be asked to submit a recent full-length play as additional support material.

The Dr. Floyd Gaffney Playwriting Competition 2019

The UC San Diego’s Department of Theatre and Dance seeks from all enrolled undergraduate students submissions of previously unproduced, unpublished scripts highlighting the African-American experience in contemporary or historical terms. Adaptations from books and other forms are not allowed.

Prize:

A $1000 honorarium will be awarded to the winning playwright.

A staged reading of the winning script on May 12th, 2019, in the Wagner New Play Festival attended by national theatre professionals.

Travel and housing cost to and from UC San Diego to be present for the performance.

Adjudication:

Finalists and the eventual winners will be selected by a team comprised of the faculty and staff of UCSD Department of Theatre and Dance and invited judges from other theatre facilities, the professional theatre, local media or the UCSD student body.

The decision of the team of adjudicators is final. The UCSD Department of Theatre and Dance reserves the right to select no winner.

Guidelines:

Scripts must be original, unpublished, unproduced and free of royalty and copyright restrictions. Plays which have staged readings are acceptable.

Scripts must be 50 pages or longer, typed. Manuscripts must be submitted electronically.

Deadline for entry Friday, April 12th, 2019. 

The winner will be announced by April 27th, 2019.

OPEN SPACE ARTS 2019 SUMMER PLAYWRIGHTS FESTIVAL GUIDELINES

Submissions for the 2019 Summer Playwrights Festival are open until April 14th, 2019

Plays submitted must fit the following guidelines:

  • Plays must fit the theme of "Age of Wisdom"
  • Must be no longer than 15-20 minutes (average one (1) minute/page)
  • Must include a title page with play title, playwright name, email, and location.
  • Must include a dramatis personae (character name, age range, gender if necessary,) and brief description of the play.
  • Industry standard formatting is not required, but formatting must include normal page margins (1",) 12 point font (Courier, Arial, Times New Roman), and single spacing with space between separate lines of dialogue.
  • Page numbers preferred, but not required.
  • Must be family friendly - no overt swearing, violence, or sexual themes. Keep it PG.
  • Must be suitable to be performed outdoors - no intense lighting requirements, no complex sets, etc.
  • Must be a PDF or Word document.
  • You may submit up to two plays for consideration.

Fifth Annual End of the Road New Short Play Festival and Beach Party

South Baldwin Community Theatre of Golf Shores, Alabama is seeking submissions for the Fifth Annual End of the Road New Short Play Festival and Beach Party to be held July 12, 13 & 14 2019 in Gulf Shores AL. It will consist of three staged readings of eight winning ten-minute plays. There will be an additional slot reserved for a student (18 and under) play.

By submitting your play you are agreeing to participate in the production of the play which means that attendance by the playwright is a requirement for winning scripts.

Plays may have had prior productions but may not have been published. Plays should not exceed 10 minutes in length and should be appropriate for a family-friendly theatre.

Alpine Fellowship

The Alpine Fellowship is a group of writers, thinkers and artists who are passionate about learning and communicating with a view to better understanding themselves and others. We value a capacity for openness - being engaged in critically reflecting on firmly held beliefs; the courage to be vulnerable - speaking from a place of lived experience; the drive for curiosity - being truly able to receive and listen to others.

We think it important to support young people today who may have become somewhat disillusioned by the reality of modern day education. We care about discovering what an alternative model of education might look like. Hence the spirit of the enterprise is necessarily open ended, and we welcome and seek the support, contribution and presence of anyone who relates to what we care about.

Aimed at encouraging theatre writers at the start of their careers to explore and challenge philosophical ideas using the dramatic form. The prize will be £3000 plus a rehearsed reading at the Fellowship’s annual Symposium.

Rules: A dialogue sample of at least 10 pages (a previous play is fine) and a brief proposal of the writer’s intended treatment of the year’s theme of ‘Identity’ (2 pages max, a single paragraph is fine). The Prize is open to anyone above 18 years of age.

The Winner will be expected to deliver a completed script by May 31st, allowing for casting and rehearsals prior to the reading in Sweden.

 Shortlisted entries will be notified by email. Young playwright Jessica Swale will judge the submissions and direct the winning entry’s reading.

  • No restriction of theme or genre.

TO QUALIFY:
  • You must be the sole African-American author of the submitted work.
  • Playwright must publically and openly identify themselves as African-American, Black, or of the African diaspora.  
  • Previously published or produced work by the author or theatre/company is not allowed (See definitions below).
  • Play must run no longer than 8-10 minutes long on stage. Consider conducting an informal reading to ensure). 
  • Play should accommodate a “bare-stage” set requiring only a minimum of removable stage props and require basic lighting and sound cues.     
  • Play must not be a musical.    
  • Play must not be written for children or youth. 
  • Play must not contain characters that are under 17 years old.    
  • Play must not be a re-submission of previous Fade To Black play festival seasons. 
  • Play must not be considered a translation or adaptation.
  • Play must not be a film. Screenplays will not be accepted.  
  • Play should be "stand-alone", separate body of work that has not been extracted from a larger, previously written play.
  • Author must be at least 18 years of age.  
  • Play must be submitted in a PDF format.

 DEFINITIONS:

"Produced” - Your play was marketed for production date(s) by either you (its playwright) or a theatre company and was performed before an audience who purchased tickets to see the event.  

"Published" - Your play is an officially published work and commands royalties from the producing theater each time it is performed.

Staged readings (formal or informal) are not considered productions. If your play has only had public or private readings but has not been produced as a full-scale stage performance, you are permitted to submit the play.

FAQ

Q. My plays were performed for at no charge to the audience and I did not get paid. Are they eligible for submission? 
A: We diligently research all plays submitted to ensure compliance. Whether payment was received or not, if the performance is not considered as a "reading", it is ineligible for submission. All plays selected have been certified as world premiering new works.

Q: Am I required to attend the festival to have my play produced? 
A: No. You are not required to attend. Fade To Black will cover the full cost of producing, marketing and professionally filming your play.

Q: Will you pay for my travel to Houston, room, board, food, and transportation if I am a selected playwright? 
A: The experience of the Fade To Black Play Festivals is amazing! We encourage you to attend and meet the vast community of artists that will bring your play to life, but we are not able to cover cost outside of the $100.00 honorarium each winning playwright will receive at this time.

Q: Could you expound on "bare-stage"?
A: We have a relatively small area for prop/set piece storage. We must set and strike the stage within 30-60 seconds for each play so your play should be free of the need for excessive props, furniture and major appliances (i.e. stove, refrigerator).  Your play should be very easy to mount.

Q: My play takes place in several different locations, cuts across various chronological timeframes, has lavish special effects and involves a large number of extras. 
A: This may be seen as film disguised as a play. Ideally, your play should be set in one location and if absolutely necessary, one additional "implied location". It should have no more than 5-7 characters. Most things can be adapted for stage performance, but if your piece is really a film, it will not be accepted. You must adapt screenplays into a format that will perform well on stage.

Q: I have the appearance of children written into my play. Will this be OK?
A: No. Your play must not contain characters or extras under the age of 17.

In the Moment One Act Series Playwrights Wanted-SPRING BREAK PROJECT

Creative Circuit Studios is joining forces with a Graduate Capstone project for the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, TX to bring to light the difficult realities of mental health and graduate students. The Capstone student firmly believes that art, specifically theatre, can and should be used as a tool for social change and awareness.

After having read a recent study about poor mental health in graduate students across our nation, and surveying graduate students representing her own school and multiple universities throughout the nation, she was inspired to join forces with the annual One Act Series Event, which features talented playwrights like yourselves. Together, we can create a powerful evening of performances that gives back to the community and hope to those affected by your works.

Playwrights must submit the following information in an email, plus your script attached in WORD or PDF format to projecttheatre2019@gmail.com by MIDNIGHT March 31, 2019.

There is no submission fee to submit as many plays as you choose within the guidelines.

Playwrights Week at the Lark 2019

Playwrights’ Week is an annual, intensive, seven-day festival designed to foster a peer-based community among a cohort of writers with new work in development. Selected via a year-long Open Submissions process, we provide approximately five playwrights with crucial creative resources in a nurturing and rigorous laboratory setting, which includes a series of group conversations around the work. Each new play receives twelve hours of rehearsal in advance of a public staged reading, focused on the writer’s self-stated developmental goals.

Our support criteria emphasizes ambitious, fresh, playful, engaging, energizing, provocative, powerful, and theatrical work by writers with clear artistic goals who are open to a collaborative development process.

Important Information:

  • Playwrights’ Week 2019 will take place between October and November 2019.
  • Each applicant should expect a confirmation of application receipt in April 2019 and a final response in September 2019.
  • While there is no official minimum number of pages for submitted full-length plays, we do not accept 10-minute plays or musicals. 
  • Previously produced plays ARE eligible for consideration.
  • Plays previously submitted to this program are accepted, but we strongly encourage the submission of new work.
  • Writers living outside of the U.S. can apply if the script was originally written in English.
  • Due to the volume of submissions to this program, we will be unable to accept revised scripts during the selection process.

Submission Guidelines: Plays should be original, short one act plays; ideal length 10-15 minutes with 20-minute maximum. Previously produced plays acceptable. Playwrights may submit up to three (3) plays maximum.

Seeking Short Plays: Comedic, absurd, dramatic, satirical, farcical, musical, etc. are all welcome for review. Works for actors of all ages (children thru seniors) and abilities are strongly encouraged. Selected plays will be performed at Theatre 82 in Cranston, Rhode Island from July 11-27, 2019

Deadline for Submission: All plays must be received by Friday, April 12, 2019. Any plays received or postmarked past April 12th will not be accepted for review. Plays will be reviewed and judged by a panel of community directors and actors on their artistic and technical merits, and collectively decided on whether they are “selected for performance” or “not selected.” Total number of selected plays is TBD, based on factors including number of submissions, length of plays, etc.

Selected Plays for Performance: The One Act Play Festival (OAPF) Panel will finalize and announce all selected plays for performance by the end of May. Playwrights will receive notification only if their play(s) was/were selected for performance, and the selected plays will also be posted on the festival’s webpage. Playwrights will not be notified if their works were not accepted. By submitting works, playwrights agree to allow Artists’ Exchange to produce their play(s) in the festival for the public’s entertainment and benefit with no performance/royalty fees.

Selected Playwrights: Participation is volunteer; no stipends or monetary prizes are awarded to selected playwrights. All monies collected from ticket sales and submission fees will benefit Artists’ Exchange/Gateways to Change, Inc. and the continuation of the OAPF for years to come. Selected playwrights will receive at least two (2) complimentary tickets and recognition in the playbill and festival webpage, including a personal bio and contact information (if provided). Performances are not video recorded.

Traguna Productions Summer Reading Series (NY NY) is dedicated to bringing to life new, unique, exciting, and intriguing works representing all genres, modes, and story telling mediums.

We are looking for plays, musicals, operas, dance pieces, etc. for a 29-hour reading series in August. The pieces must be completed at the point of submission and must be at least 55 minutes in length.
  • Traguna Summer Series #1 runs Monday, August 5th with presentations on Saturday and Sunday, August 10th. 
  • Traguna Summer Series #2 runs Monday, August 12th with presentations on Saturday and Sunday, August 17th.
Readings will follow AEA guidelines and will include director, stage manager, actors, and musicains (if needed). If auditions are required, the author(s) will be invited to attend the audition.

The 2019 Glassco Translation Residency

Playwrights’ Workshop Montréal, in partnership with the Cole Foundation, is now accepting submissions for the 2019 Glassco Translation Residency. The residency will take place June 12-22, 2019 at Fletcher Cottage, home of the late Bill Glassco, in Tadoussac, Quebec.

The Glassco Translation Residency allows playwrights and translators from across Canada and beyond to come together for ten days in Tadoussac, Quebec, to work in-depth on their translation projects.

The chosen participants are provided with a unique opportunity to focus on their projects and to share expertise in a retreat environment. Translations into all languages are welcomed. Over the past 15 years we have supported translation projects into Cantonese, Catalan, Cree, English, French, Innu-aimun, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Tamil and Urdu . Award-winning translator and playwright, Bobby Theodore, will serve as residency host and translation dramaturg.

We are now accepting submissions of plays that are slated for translation. The play should ideally have had a production in its original language. At least one component of the project needs to be Canadian. We strongly encourage Indigenous artists to apply.

Theatre Conspiracy Annual New Play Contest 2019

Theatre Conspiracy is now accepting submissions for its Annual New Play Contest between December 2018 and March 2019. All works submitted will be read and judged by a panel of qualified theatre teachers, directors and performers. Work submitted to the contest must be a full length play with seven actors or less and have simple to moderate technical demands. Play having up to three previous productions are welcome. No musicals please, as we are a tone deaf theatre company.

First place winners receive the Janet and Bruce Bunch Play Contest Award, $700 and a full production. However, it is our goal to produce more than one entry each year.

Shawnee Original Playwrights Series seeks one-act and full-length plays

Jewish Plays Project 2019

The Jewish Plays Project (David Winitsky, Artistic Director) is excited to announce the opening of Project Submissions for future Jewish Plays Project Seasons.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE: SUBMISSIONS ARE OPEN TO ARTISTS OF ALL BACKGROUNDS, DENOMINATIONS, FAITHS, CREEDS, RELIGIONS and other IDEALS. We believe that Jewish identity and culture are specific manifestations of universal human cravings for spiritual, ethical, moral and worldly joy. “Matrilineal descent” is neither important nor necessary.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Starting in 2019, the Jewish Plays Project now accepts scripts for new Jewish plays and musicals on an open, rolling basis – there is no submission deadline. 

SUBMISSION PROCESS: Fill out the Project Application Form and attach a play to the form as a PDF. Your play must be submitted with your name and identifying information removed (all plays are reviewed blind). We do not charge a fee to submit (cause we kinda think submission fees are lame).

Submitted plays and musicals will be considered for:

Jewish Playwriting Contest: our national, community-powered search for the most exciting new Jewish plays;

Artist Shabbats: small-group, private sessions focused on one new play;

NYC Readings: public and industry presentations in prominent NYC venues of new plays and musicals that are ready for production;

OPEN: Festival of New Jewish Theater at the 14th Street Y: our ever-changing showcase of new work at our East Village NYC home.

Renegade Readings: rapid response readings for new plays in critical stages of development.

MUSICALS: The JPP does develop musicals (see our workshops of David Hein and Irene Sankoff’s Mitzvah and Deborah Yarchun’s And You Shall Be a Blessing). Submitted musicals must include links to recordings of at least 3 songs to be reviewed.

ELIGIBILITY: The following must be true of a submitted play or musical:

It contains significant Jewish themes, characters, content, or points of view.

It is not a Holocaust play (stories that deal directly with the history of the Shoah, its survivors and their children, or the World War II period more generally).

It does NOT fall into the beloved category of "ethnically stereotypical comedy" (No 'Yiddishemammeh" plays, no "My Afternoon With Bubbe", no "Jewlicious")

It is in English, or primarily in English – we love plays that play with language as a theatrical tool, and plays that explore the differences in language. It just needs to be primarily accessible by an English speaking audience.  (We welcome translations).

It is full length, meaning over 75 minutes in length.

It has not had a full production in the NY Metro region, or a major regional theater (LORT C or above).

The play has never been published in any form.

MadLab seeks full-length plays

At MadLab, we love reading new full length plays and we desperately want to read yours!

The nitty gritty about submitting your brilliant baby to the Lab:
All submissions should be sent to submissions@MadLab.net.  Please use “MadLab 2019 Season” as your subject.

We’re not picky about what format your script is in (though the standard Dramatist’s Modern Stage Play format is most welcome), so send us what you got as a Word or PDF attachment. Do not send us links to anything - we’re not going to click them.

Please be sure to include your name, address and contact information on your title page.

The submission window opens 3/13/19 and closes when we receive 500 submissions.

Season decisions will be made by the end of 2019. While we would love to follow up with every playwright individually, we receive too many submissions to make this happen. If you don’t hear from us, we’re sorry and please submit again in the future.

We are only accepting 500 submissions with a maximum of 2 plays per playwright.

Plays should have a run time no shorter than 70 minutes and no longer than 2 hours 15 minutes.
Please do not send us 45 page 1-acts or that 200 page beast you’ve been tinkering on for the last five years.  They will not be read.

We are currently not accepting Children’s Theatre pieces, One Act Collections or Musicals.  Not that we don’t appreciate them, they’re just not up our alley right now.

Please proofread your script before sending it to us. We hate to be “those people”, but nothing will get your script put down faster than a your/you’re or a to/too typo.
You will be Paid!  MadLab currently pays playwrights $200 up front and 10% of ticket sales payable after close of show.

“But what are you looking for?”

What makes a play a “MadLab” play?  Like obscenity, it’s hard to define, but we know it and love it when we see it.  Here’s a few tips as to what we like to produce and what our audiences have come to expect:

Plays with a strong Point of View.  Our audiences expect to not only be entertained for an evening, but to leave the theatre with something to think about and remember.  We want to read plays from and for the marginalized and forgotten. We love new takes on old problems. We adore speaking Truth to Power.

Good Stories with Vibrant Characters.  Now, any play can have that strong POV, but the special ones show us that through strong storytelling and equally strong characters.  So, mesmerize us with your craft and enchant us with your characters. Bonus points for well written female characters and casts that give an accurate representation of our multiracial society, as well as those that challenge the concept of binary sexuality.  We’re not saying we won’t produce your play about 10 white suburban dads and their annual golf outing, but…

Plays that are Visual.  Ok, we’ll be completely honest – we are on a shoestring budget as far as sets/costumes go, but we’ve been doing this for 20+ years and we love an artistic challenge.  MadLab is a 75 seat converted garage black box theatre, so plan accordingly. But challenge us. You’d probably be surprised what we’re capable of.

Plays that are modern. We definitely respect your historical masterpiece, but if your play involves iambic pentameter or greek gods it’s probably not our speed.

Make us Laugh.  We’ve been told we have an “offbeat” sense of humor.  We’ve also been told we may require psychological counseling.  Be bold in your comedy writing, don’t worry about offending us (or our audiences), and never be afraid of being silly.

Make us Cry.  See above.

Heck, do both with the same play.  Always the best option to our way of thinking☺

10-15 MIN PLAYWRITING COMPETITION - “SYNTROPY: THE SPIRIT OF LOVE"

Have you ever felt something calling you forward: a purpose towards which you are striving, something you were meant to achieve or become? Did you know that the same principles of physics that describe causality have a second solution, one that describes how the present is influenced by future purposes just as it is influenced by past causes?

In 2015, the ICRL Press published a book by Ulisse Di Corpo and Antonella Vaninni that describes the phenomenon of syntropy, the complementary principle to entropy. We at the International Consciousness Research Laboratories (ICRL) regard this book, “Syntropy: The Spirit of Love,” as a vital resource for raising awareness of the phenomenon, and are seeking to expand our efforts into the performing arts.

We invite you to submit a script to the inaugural run of the “ICRL Playwriting Competition.” For this event, we are soliciting one-act scripts that can help raise awareness of the principle of syntropy, and its role in human experience. Of the submissions, three scripts will be selected for monetary awards of $50 (third place), $100 (second place), and $200 (first place). Depending on quality and suitability, the first place winner may be contracted to write a full-length play on the subject.

Also, if there are a sufficient number of quality submissions that are well-aligned with the message of “Syntropy: The Spirit of Love,” ICRL will select (approximately) five additional winners to create a one-acts production to be performed at a theater in the greater Baltimore region.

Competition Rules:

  • Scripts will be assessed based primarily on their ability to raise awareness of the principle of syntropy as described in Di Corpo’s and Vaninni’s book. This means the script should: a) clearly relate to and illustrate this topic; and b) do so in a way that will capture and retain an audience’s attention and interest.   Additional information about the book can be found here.
  • Plays should be approximately 10-15 minutes in duration.
  • Aside from the above-mentioned focus on syntropy, there are no limitations on genre or style.
  • Each playwright may submit up to two scripts.
  • There is no entry fee to submit scripts.
  • While there aren’t strict formatting requirements, scripts that are difficult to read will be viewed less favorably (i.e. don’t hurt your chances by making your work difficult to follow).
  • Submissions will be judged blind, so scripts must not contain the playwright’s name or other identifying information.
  •  Scripts are to be submitted electronically to submissions@icrl.org no later than 11:59 pm (east coast, GMT-5) on March 30, 2019. In the submission email, please include the playwright’s name, mailing address, email address, and the title of the script(s) being submitted.
  • We are aiming to announce the winners of the competition in early July, although the specific timetable will depend on the number of submissions received.
  • First, second, and third place awards of $50, $100, and $200 are guaranteed. The contracting of a full-length script from the first-place winner, as well as the determination of whether to produce a one-acts show with a Baltimore theater, is at the discretion of ICRL based on suitability of the submitted scripts.

Many area theater folks will fondly recall Philadelphia’s Brick Playhouse on South Street, and its annual short play festival, “Night of 1,000 Plays,” an evening of 20+ very short pieces of mostly five minutes or less in length. With full tribute and homage to The Brick, HP&P has revived this annual tradition featuring dozens of local writers, directors and actors coming together in June for a fun-filled evening of organized chaos!

The call for directors and actors will come later, but at this point we are looking for writers to submit their pieces for consideration. Plays should be 5 minutes or less – although a couple of longer pieces may be considered (8-10 minutes max!) Any genre is welcome; but the length tends to best lend itself to comedy. Writers may submit as many pieces as they like!

Please feel free to send pieces that were previously submitted, as well so that we can take a fresh look for 2019.

This year’s deadline for submissions will be April 28th.

Appalachian Festival of Plays & Playwrights

Plays must be written by an Appalachian playwright (currently living in the Appalachian Mountains which, for our purposes, run from New York to Alabama) OR the plays must be set in the Appalachian region.

Plays must be unpublished and must not have had a full professional production.

Unleavened Plays Festival seeks 10-minute plays

Congregation Beth Elohim (www.cbebk.org) – a spiritual, cultural, and intellectual hub for Reform Jewish life in Brooklyn, NY – is excited to announce its first annual Unleavened Plays Festival.

The Festival is seeking six 10-minute plays, each reflecting the underlying theme of “PLAGUE(S).” The plays will be performed as an evening of staged readings at CBE on Sunday, April 15, 2019 -- the weekend before Passover begins, as people around the world begin to think about the Jewish people’s efforts to escape Egypt and head out into the desert toward freedom.

Don’t be put off by the potential darkness in our theme! We are looking for comedies, dramas and anything in between that build on the theme in a creative and dynamic direction. The plays needn’t be about Passover in any explicit way. Rather,we are hoping for plays that offer interesting characters, engaging stories, and exciting food for thought.

There’s no fee for submission, and previously produced plays are acceptable.

The six selected plays will be presented by professional actors and directors.

Deadline for submission is March 17, 2019. Plays chosen will be announced by the end of March.

Guidelines:

1.    Plays should respond to our theme, but feel full of imagination in how they engage with the theme. Do not feel the need to be literal or write specifically about Passover. Instead, aim to surprise and delight us.

2.    Plays should feel Jewish in some basic way, but they do not have to be about exclusively Jewish characters or events. And plays should definitely avoid Jewish stereotypes.

3.    The running time should be right around 10 minutes, and scripts may be no longer than 10 pages (not counting the title page & cast page).

4.    Casts should be limited to 5 actors or less (though doubling is acceptable).

5.    No special lighting or sound effects will be possible, so please avoid them along with complicated set-ups.

6.    All submissions should be sent as PDFs in standard play format.

7.    Playwrights may submit only one script.

8.    Please use this format:

Title page: Title, author's name, address, phone number, and email address

Second page: Cast with description of characters and setting.

Third page: This should be the first page of the script itself. Please include title and page numbers on every page.

Center at West Park’s Theater Artist Residency Program

The Center at West Park’s Theater Artist Residency Program nurtures exemplary and boundary-pushing theater artists and companies by providing free performance space, subsidized rehearsal space, and a 50/50 split of ticket sales. We support the creation of new works and the re-working of classic texts in contemporary contexts in order to diversify and enrich the theater community of New York and to attract and challenge enthusiastic and adventurous audiences.

All Resident Artists are offered one to four weeks in our intimate 60-seat Balcony Theater to produce and perform their shows. Resident Artists are expected to present full productions during the residency, including set, costume, and lighting design. The Balcony Theater comes equipped with a rep lighting plot and PA sound system. Please note that the Balcony Theater is only accessible by stairs.

Chagrin Valley Little Theatre THE 10-10 NEW PLAYS FESTIVAL

CVLT began the biennial 10-10 Festival in 2009, putting out the call for short plays to be performed at its River Street Playhouse, the smaller venue adjacent to the main theater building. Ten plays would be chosen, each lasting roughly ten minutes. The first 10-10 that July was a resounding success, receiving submissions from all over Northeast Ohio and beyond.

Now The 10-10 is back for its sixth edition!

Manhattan Rep presents: Young Adult Four Minute Play Contest

Seeking fully produced Four minute plays written and brought to life by Young Adults ages 12 - 18 to compete in our Young Adult 4 minute play contest on Sunday March 31 at 2 pm and 4 pm.  

This will be a super fun event for all.  A great opportunity for Young Adults to write, act or direct. And there will be two performances. And it all takes place on one Sunday afternoon.

Best Four Minute Play production playwright will win an opportunity to write a 20 - 40 minute play (mentored by Ken Wolf Artistic Director of Manhattan Rep,) which Manhattan Rep will then produce and bring to life for 3 performances in June 2019.

Princess Grace Playwriting Fellowship

PLAYWRITING GUIDELINES

We encourage emerging playwrights to apply at the beginning of their careers so that through the New Dramatists Fellowship, they can develop their work as well as benefit from being a part of a unique, diverse, dynamic community of professional playwrights. An applicant’s status as an emerging playwright is evaluated during the adjudication process.

One playwright will be selected to receive:
• A grant in the amount of $7,500
• A one-season (September – June) artistic residency at New Dramatists, Inc. in New York City (For Award recipients living outside of the New York metro area, your on-site residency can be adapted according to your schedule with reimbursement provided for transportation costs to/from New York.)
• Inclusion of the winning script in New Dramatists’ library
• Advocacy for the recipient and their script to New York and National theatre communities for the duration of the fellowship, including opportunities to gather with the Princess Grace community, New Dramatists writers, and other theatre professionals
• Mentorship from a New Dramatists resident playwright for the duration of the fellowship
• Opportunity for winning play to be licensed and published by Samuel French, Inc.

Submission requirements:
• All candidates must be United States citizens or have permanent resident status.
• Eligible playwrights must not have had more than 3 public productions of their full-length plays mounted by a producing theatre.

Developmental readings and workshops, university productions, and self-productions are admissible.

You must submit one unpublished, full-length play (A full-length play is a single play that constitutes a full evening of theater. For example, a 90-minute intermissionless play is a full-length play.)
• There is no restriction on subject matter
• Co-written material will not be accepted
• No adaptations of previously published material

The Foundation is looking to identify and support original, authentic, unheard voices in the theater. The panel will consider the submitted play in terms of the originality of the storytelling, quality, and offering of new perspectives.

Cold Comfort Theater's Second Annual Festival of Short Plays for New Works

Relative Theatrics seeks full-length plays

SUPPORTING NEW PLAY DEVELOPMENT IN THE LARAMIE (WYOMING) COMMUNITY WITH A SERIES OF STAGED READINGS OF NEW WORKS

We are looking for full-length plays with an estimated run time from 80 to 120 minutes, a small cast, and a single or flexible set that speak to the mission of Relative Theatrics.

Selected plays will receive a staged reading with qualified actors to assist in the development process and a $50 honorarium. Additionally, plays will be paired with a Wyoming singer-songwriter to write and perform original music inspired by the play.
