Alpine Fellowship

The Alpine Fellowship is a group of writers, thinkers and artists who are passionate about learning and communicating with a view to better understanding themselves and others. We value a capacity for openness - being engaged in critically reflecting on firmly held beliefs; the courage to be vulnerable - speaking from a place of lived experience; the drive for curiosity - being truly able to receive and listen to others.

We think it important to support young people today who may have become somewhat disillusioned by the reality of modern day education. We care about discovering what an alternative model of education might look like. Hence the spirit of the enterprise is necessarily open ended, and we welcome and seek the support, contribution and presence of anyone who relates to what we care about.

Aimed at encouraging theatre writers at the start of their careers to explore and challenge philosophical ideas using the dramatic form. The prize will be £3000 plus a rehearsed reading at the Fellowship’s annual Symposium.

Rules: A dialogue sample of at least 10 pages (a previous play is fine) and a brief proposal of the writer’s intended treatment of the year’s theme of ‘Identity’ (2 pages max, a single paragraph is fine). The Prize is open to anyone above 18 years of age.

The Winner will be expected to deliver a completed script by May 31st, allowing for casting and rehearsals prior to the reading in Sweden.

 Shortlisted entries will be notified by email. Young playwright Jessica Swale will judge the submissions and direct the winning entry’s reading.

SCRIPT SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED TO APRIL 1, 2019.
  • No fee is required.
  • No restriction of theme or genre.
  • Three (3) scripts submissions are allowed per playwright.
  • Selected playwright winners will be awarded a cash prize of $100.00.

TO QUALIFY:
  • You must be the sole African-American author of the submitted work.
  • Playwright must publically and openly identify themselves as African-American, Black, or of the African diaspora.  
  • Previously published or produced work by the author or theatre/company is not allowed (See definitions below).
  • Play must run no longer than 8-10 minutes long on stage. Consider conducting an informal reading to ensure). 
  • Play should accommodate a “bare-stage” set requiring only a minimum of removable stage props and require basic lighting and sound cues.     
  • Play must not be a musical.    
  • Play must not be written for children or youth. 
  • Play must not contain characters that are under 17 years old.    
  • Play must not be a re-submission of previous Fade To Black play festival seasons. 
  • Play must not be considered a translation or adaptation.
  • Play must not be a film. Screenplays will not be accepted.  
  • Play should be "stand-alone", separate body of work that has not been extracted from a larger, previously written play.
  • Author must be at least 18 years of age.  
  • Play must be submitted in a PDF format.

 DEFINITIONS:

"Produced” - Your play was marketed for production date(s) by either you (its playwright) or a theatre company and was performed before an audience who purchased tickets to see the event.  

"Published" - Your play is an officially published work and commands royalties from the producing theater each time it is performed.

Staged readings (formal or informal) are not considered productions. If your play has only had public or private readings but has not been produced as a full-scale stage performance, you are permitted to submit the play.

FAQ

Q. My plays were performed for at no charge to the audience and I did not get paid. Are they eligible for submission? 
A: We diligently research all plays submitted to ensure compliance. Whether payment was received or not, if the performance is not considered as a "reading", it is ineligible for submission. All plays selected have been certified as world premiering new works.

Q: Am I required to attend the festival to have my play produced? 
A: No. You are not required to attend. Fade To Black will cover the full cost of producing, marketing and professionally filming your play.

Q: Will you pay for my travel to Houston, room, board, food, and transportation if I am a selected playwright? 
A: The experience of the Fade To Black Play Festivals is amazing! We encourage you to attend and meet the vast community of artists that will bring your play to life, but we are not able to cover cost outside of the $100.00 honorarium each winning playwright will receive at this time.

Q: Could you expound on "bare-stage"?
A: We have a relatively small area for prop/set piece storage. We must set and strike the stage within 30-60 seconds for each play so your play should be free of the need for excessive props, furniture and major appliances (i.e. stove, refrigerator).  Your play should be very easy to mount.

Q: My play takes place in several different locations, cuts across various chronological timeframes, has lavish special effects and involves a large number of extras. 
A: This may be seen as film disguised as a play. Ideally, your play should be set in one location and if absolutely necessary, one additional "implied location". It should have no more than 5-7 characters. Most things can be adapted for stage performance, but if your piece is really a film, it will not be accepted. You must adapt screenplays into a format that will perform well on stage.

Q: I have the appearance of children written into my play. Will this be OK?
A: No. Your play must not contain characters or extras under the age of 17.

Creative Circuit Studios is joining forces with a Graduate Capstone project for the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, TX to bring to light the difficult realities of mental health and graduate students. The Capstone student firmly believes that art, specifically theatre, can and should be used as a tool for social change and awareness.

After having read a recent study about poor mental health in graduate students across our nation, and surveying graduate students representing her own school and multiple universities throughout the nation, she was inspired to join forces with the annual One Act Series Event, which features talented playwrights like yourselves. Together, we can create a powerful evening of performances that gives back to the community and hope to those affected by your works.

Playwrights must submit the following information in an email, plus your script attached in WORD or PDF format to projecttheatre2019@gmail.com by MIDNIGHT March 31, 2019.

There is no submission fee to submit as many plays as you choose within the guidelines.

Playwrights Week at the Lark 2019

Playwrights’ Week is an annual, intensive, seven-day festival designed to foster a peer-based community among a cohort of writers with new work in development. Selected via a year-long Open Submissions process, we provide approximately five playwrights with crucial creative resources in a nurturing and rigorous laboratory setting, which includes a series of group conversations around the work. Each new play receives twelve hours of rehearsal in advance of a public staged reading, focused on the writer’s self-stated developmental goals.

Our support criteria emphasizes ambitious, fresh, playful, engaging, energizing, provocative, powerful, and theatrical work by writers with clear artistic goals who are open to a collaborative development process.

Important Information:

  • Playwrights’ Week 2019 will take place between October and November 2019.
  • Each applicant should expect a confirmation of application receipt in April 2019 and a final response in September 2019.
  • While there is no official minimum number of pages for submitted full-length plays, we do not accept 10-minute plays or musicals. 
  • Previously produced plays ARE eligible for consideration.
  • Plays previously submitted to this program are accepted, but we strongly encourage the submission of new work.
  • Writers living outside of the U.S. can apply if the script was originally written in English.
  • Due to the volume of submissions to this program, we will be unable to accept revised scripts during the selection process.

14th Annual One Act Play Festival (OAPF)

Submission Guidelines: Plays should be original, short one act plays; ideal length 10-15 minutes with 20-minute maximum. Previously produced plays acceptable. Playwrights may submit up to three (3) plays maximum.

Seeking Short Plays: Comedic, absurd, dramatic, satirical, farcical, musical, etc. are all welcome for review. Works for actors of all ages (children thru seniors) and abilities are strongly encouraged. Selected plays will be performed at Theatre 82 in Cranston, Rhode Island from July 11-27, 2019

Deadline for Submission: All plays must be received by Friday, April 12, 2019. Any plays received or postmarked past April 12th will not be accepted for review. Plays will be reviewed and judged by a panel of community directors and actors on their artistic and technical merits, and collectively decided on whether they are “selected for performance” or “not selected.” Total number of selected plays is TBD, based on factors including number of submissions, length of plays, etc.

Selected Plays for Performance: The One Act Play Festival (OAPF) Panel will finalize and announce all selected plays for performance by the end of May. Playwrights will receive notification only if their play(s) was/were selected for performance, and the selected plays will also be posted on the festival’s webpage. Playwrights will not be notified if their works were not accepted. By submitting works, playwrights agree to allow Artists’ Exchange to produce their play(s) in the festival for the public’s entertainment and benefit with no performance/royalty fees.

Selected Playwrights: Participation is volunteer; no stipends or monetary prizes are awarded to selected playwrights. All monies collected from ticket sales and submission fees will benefit Artists’ Exchange/Gateways to Change, Inc. and the continuation of the OAPF for years to come. Selected playwrights will receive at least two (2) complimentary tickets and recognition in the playbill and festival webpage, including a personal bio and contact information (if provided). Performances are not video recorded.

Traguna Productions Summer Reading Series

Traguna Productions Summer Reading Series (NY NY) is dedicated to bringing to life new, unique, exciting, and intriguing works representing all genres, modes, and story telling mediums.

We are looking for plays, musicals, operas, dance pieces, etc. for a 29-hour reading series in August. The pieces must be completed at the point of submission and must be at least 55 minutes in length.
  • Traguna Summer Series #1 runs Monday, August 5th with presentations on Saturday and Sunday, August 10th. 
  • Traguna Summer Series #2 runs Monday, August 12th with presentations on Saturday and Sunday, August 17th.
Readings will follow AEA guidelines and will include director, stage manager, actors, and musicains (if needed). If auditions are required, the author(s) will be invited to attend the audition.

The 2019 Glassco Translation Residency

Playwrights’ Workshop Montréal, in partnership with the Cole Foundation, is now accepting submissions for the 2019 Glassco Translation Residency. The residency will take place June 12-22, 2019 at Fletcher Cottage, home of the late Bill Glassco, in Tadoussac, Quebec.

The Glassco Translation Residency allows playwrights and translators from across Canada and beyond to come together for ten days in Tadoussac, Quebec, to work in-depth on their translation projects.

The chosen participants are provided with a unique opportunity to focus on their projects and to share expertise in a retreat environment. Translations into all languages are welcomed. Over the past 15 years we have supported translation projects into Cantonese, Catalan, Cree, English, French, Innu-aimun, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Tamil and Urdu . Award-winning translator and playwright, Bobby Theodore, will serve as residency host and translation dramaturg.

We are now accepting submissions of plays that are slated for translation. The play should ideally have had a production in its original language. At least one component of the project needs to be Canadian. We strongly encourage Indigenous artists to apply.

A description of the project which includes the name of the translator and playwright, an indication of how the Residency will benefit the project, and any details on production interest.
Biography of both the playwright and translator
A copy of the play in its original language
One of the selection criteria for translation projects will be the availability of both the playwright and the translator to attend the residency together.

An honorarium of $750 is offered to each participant. In addition, all costs for travel, meals and accommodation are covered.

Theatre Conspiracy Annual New Play Contest 2019

Theatre Conspiracy is now accepting submissions for its Annual New Play Contest between December 2018 and March 2019. All works submitted will be read and judged by a panel of qualified theatre teachers, directors and performers. Work submitted to the contest must be a full length play with seven actors or less and have simple to moderate technical demands. Play having up to three previous productions are welcome. No musicals please, as we are a tone deaf theatre company.

First place winners receive the Janet and Bruce Bunch Play Contest Award, $700 and a full production. However, it is our goal to produce more than one entry each year.

Guidelines:

Shawnee Original Playwrights Series seeks one-act and full-length plays

Each year, Worthington Players will produce and perform the original work(s) of a playwright(s), chosen by our Executive Committee from among submissions received in our open contest and read before a live audience.

Beginning with the 2017 season, works  produced previously at any theatrical venue are no longer eligible for consideration.

Submissions are now being accepted for the 2020 productions. Plays will be read over the summer of 2019 and the winners will be produced in 2020.

Jewish Plays Project 2019

The Jewish Plays Project (David Winitsky, Artistic Director) is excited to announce the opening of Project Submissions for future Jewish Plays Project Seasons.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE: SUBMISSIONS ARE OPEN TO ARTISTS OF ALL BACKGROUNDS, DENOMINATIONS, FAITHS, CREEDS, RELIGIONS and other IDEALS. We believe that Jewish identity and culture are specific manifestations of universal human cravings for spiritual, ethical, moral and worldly joy. “Matrilineal descent” is neither important nor necessary.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Starting in 2019, the Jewish Plays Project now accepts scripts for new Jewish plays and musicals on an open, rolling basis – there is no submission deadline. 

SUBMISSION PROCESS: Fill out the Project Application Form and attach a play to the form as a PDF. Your play must be submitted with your name and identifying information removed (all plays are reviewed blind). We do not charge a fee to submit (cause we kinda think submission fees are lame).

Submitted plays and musicals will be considered for:

Jewish Playwriting Contest: our national, community-powered search for the most exciting new Jewish plays;

Artist Shabbats: small-group, private sessions focused on one new play;

NYC Readings: public and industry presentations in prominent NYC venues of new plays and musicals that are ready for production;

OPEN: Festival of New Jewish Theater at the 14th Street Y: our ever-changing showcase of new work at our East Village NYC home.

Renegade Readings: rapid response readings for new plays in critical stages of development.

MUSICALS: The JPP does develop musicals (see our workshops of David Hein and Irene Sankoff’s Mitzvah and Deborah Yarchun’s And You Shall Be a Blessing). Submitted musicals must include links to recordings of at least 3 songs to be reviewed.

ELIGIBILITY: The following must be true of a submitted play or musical:

It contains significant Jewish themes, characters, content, or points of view.

It is not a Holocaust play (stories that deal directly with the history of the Shoah, its survivors and their children, or the World War II period more generally).

It does NOT fall into the beloved category of "ethnically stereotypical comedy" (No 'Yiddishemammeh" plays, no "My Afternoon With Bubbe", no "Jewlicious")

It is in English, or primarily in English – we love plays that play with language as a theatrical tool, and plays that explore the differences in language. It just needs to be primarily accessible by an English speaking audience.  (We welcome translations).

It is full length, meaning over 75 minutes in length.

It has not had a full production in the NY Metro region, or a major regional theater (LORT C or above).

The play has never been published in any form.

MadLab seeks full-length plays

To maximize your chance of selection, please read all the guidelines carefully before submitting.

At MadLab, we love reading new full length plays and we desperately want to read yours!

The nitty gritty about submitting your brilliant baby to the Lab:
All submissions should be sent to submissions@MadLab.net.  Please use “MadLab 2019 Season” as your subject.

We’re not picky about what format your script is in (though the standard Dramatist’s Modern Stage Play format is most welcome), so send us what you got as a Word or PDF attachment. Do not send us links to anything - we’re not going to click them.

Please be sure to include your name, address and contact information on your title page.

The submission window opens 3/13/19 and closes when we receive 500 submissions.

Season decisions will be made by the end of 2019. While we would love to follow up with every playwright individually, we receive too many submissions to make this happen. If you don’t hear from us, we’re sorry and please submit again in the future.

We are only accepting 500 submissions with a maximum of 2 plays per playwright.

Plays should have a run time no shorter than 70 minutes and no longer than 2 hours 15 minutes.
Please do not send us 45 page 1-acts or that 200 page beast you’ve been tinkering on for the last five years.  They will not be read.

We are currently not accepting Children’s Theatre pieces, One Act Collections or Musicals.  Not that we don’t appreciate them, they’re just not up our alley right now.

Please proofread your script before sending it to us. We hate to be “those people”, but nothing will get your script put down faster than a your/you’re or a to/too typo.
You will be Paid!  MadLab currently pays playwrights $200 up front and 10% of ticket sales payable after close of show.

What makes a play a “MadLab” play?  Like obscenity, it’s hard to define, but we know it and love it when we see it.  Here’s a few tips as to what we like to produce and what our audiences have come to expect:

Plays with a strong Point of View.  Our audiences expect to not only be entertained for an evening, but to leave the theatre with something to think about and remember.  We want to read plays from and for the marginalized and forgotten. We love new takes on old problems. We adore speaking Truth to Power.

Good Stories with Vibrant Characters.  Now, any play can have that strong POV, but the special ones show us that through strong storytelling and equally strong characters.  So, mesmerize us with your craft and enchant us with your characters. Bonus points for well written female characters and casts that give an accurate representation of our multiracial society, as well as those that challenge the concept of binary sexuality.  We’re not saying we won’t produce your play about 10 white suburban dads and their annual golf outing, but…

Plays that are Visual.  Ok, we’ll be completely honest – we are on a shoestring budget as far as sets/costumes go, but we’ve been doing this for 20+ years and we love an artistic challenge.  MadLab is a 75 seat converted garage black box theatre, so plan accordingly. But challenge us. You’d probably be surprised what we’re capable of.

Plays that are modern. We definitely respect your historical masterpiece, but if your play involves iambic pentameter or greek gods it’s probably not our speed.

Make us Laugh.  We’ve been told we have an “offbeat” sense of humor.  We’ve also been told we may require psychological counseling.  Be bold in your comedy writing, don’t worry about offending us (or our audiences), and never be afraid of being silly.

Make us Cry.  See above.

Heck, do both with the same play.  Always the best option to our way of thinking☺

10-15 MIN PLAYWRITING COMPETITION - “SYNTROPY: THE SPIRIT OF LOVE"

Have you ever felt something calling you forward: a purpose towards which you are striving, something you were meant to achieve or become? Did you know that the same principles of physics that describe causality have a second solution, one that describes how the present is influenced by future purposes just as it is influenced by past causes?

In 2015, the ICRL Press published a book by Ulisse Di Corpo and Antonella Vaninni that describes the phenomenon of syntropy, the complementary principle to entropy. We at the International Consciousness Research Laboratories (ICRL) regard this book, “Syntropy: The Spirit of Love,” as a vital resource for raising awareness of the phenomenon, and are seeking to expand our efforts into the performing arts.

We invite you to submit a script to the inaugural run of the “ICRL Playwriting Competition.” For this event, we are soliciting one-act scripts that can help raise awareness of the principle of syntropy, and its role in human experience. Of the submissions, three scripts will be selected for monetary awards of $50 (third place), $100 (second place), and $200 (first place). Depending on quality and suitability, the first place winner may be contracted to write a full-length play on the subject.

Also, if there are a sufficient number of quality submissions that are well-aligned with the message of “Syntropy: The Spirit of Love,” ICRL will select (approximately) five additional winners to create a one-acts production to be performed at a theater in the greater Baltimore region.

Competition Rules:

  • Scripts will be assessed based primarily on their ability to raise awareness of the principle of syntropy as described in Di Corpo’s and Vaninni’s book. This means the script should: a) clearly relate to and illustrate this topic; and b) do so in a way that will capture and retain an audience’s attention and interest.   Additional information about the book can be found here.
  • Plays should be approximately 10-15 minutes in duration.
  • Aside from the above-mentioned focus on syntropy, there are no limitations on genre or style.
  • Each playwright may submit up to two scripts.
  • There is no entry fee to submit scripts.
  • While there aren’t strict formatting requirements, scripts that are difficult to read will be viewed less favorably (i.e. don’t hurt your chances by making your work difficult to follow).
  • Submissions will be judged blind, so scripts must not contain the playwright’s name or other identifying information.
  •  Scripts are to be submitted electronically to submissions@icrl.org no later than 11:59 pm (east coast, GMT-5) on March 30, 2019. In the submission email, please include the playwright’s name, mailing address, email address, and the title of the script(s) being submitted.
  • We are aiming to announce the winners of the competition in early July, although the specific timetable will depend on the number of submissions received.
  • First, second, and third place awards of $50, $100, and $200 are guaranteed. The contracting of a full-length script from the first-place winner, as well as the determination of whether to produce a one-acts show with a Baltimore theater, is at the discretion of ICRL based on suitability of the submitted scripts.

Wayward Sisters Theatre Ensemble announces Wayward Sisters New Play Showcase

The show case will go up at the end of May, and is a great opportunity for playwrights to hear their work aloud, and receive feedback from the audience.

Playwrights: This is our final call for plays that would be interested in participating in our Wayward Sisters New Play Showcase.

We are accepting plays until April 1st. 

We are particularly excited about plays that are written by women, or plays that pass the Bechdel test with a strong female lead.

Calling all Playwrights – 2019’s Night of 1,000 Plays

Are you a playwright, or sketch writer? Or, do you dream of being one and seeing your work produced on a stage that’s not in your basement? Here’s your chance! Haddonfield Plays & Players (Haddonfield, NJ) is now accepting original short play submissions for its 3rd annual production of “Night of 1,000 Plays!”

Many area theater folks will fondly recall Philadelphia’s Brick Playhouse on South Street, and its annual short play festival, “Night of 1,000 Plays,” an evening of 20+ very short pieces of mostly five minutes or less in length. With full tribute and homage to The Brick, HP&P has revived this annual tradition featuring dozens of local writers, directors and actors coming together in June for a fun-filled evening of organized chaos!

The call for directors and actors will come later, but at this point we are looking for writers to submit their pieces for consideration. Plays should be 5 minutes or less – although a couple of longer pieces may be considered (8-10 minutes max!) Any genre is welcome; but the length tends to best lend itself to comedy. Writers may submit as many pieces as they like!

Please feel free to send pieces that were previously submitted, as well so that we can take a fresh look for 2019.

This year’s deadline for submissions will be April 28th.
