We define “emerging” as a playwright that has not had more than two professional productions or a published script.

"Never been produced" means plays that have had small readings and workshops are fine, but plays that have been previously produced or published are not accepted.

We will accept full length plays that are more than sixty pages, less than one hundred and twenty pages, and may have an intermission.

We currently cannot accept musicals. We can accept children's plays. We will accept plays of any genre. Each playwright may submit ONE play. If you have been selected for Campfire before, please observe a one year hiatus between the year you were selected and the next year you submit.



The Staged Reading Series accepts plays by emerging playwrights and offers them a fully staged reading at our festival in Boise, Idaho in September 2019.


Your play will be assigned a cast and director.

You will receive a prize of $100 for a selected full-length play.

Campfire Theatre Festival is not currently able to provide playwright travel stipends for the Staged Reading Series; however, if a selected playwright can provide their own travel to Boise for the festival, all efforts will be made to assist with housing.

The Spark Program accepts plays by emerging playwrights for a twenty-hour workshop process that culminates in a seated reading at the festival in Boise, Idaho in September 2019.


Your play will be assigned a cast, a dramaturg and director.

You will receive a prize of $100 for a selected full-length play.

You will receive airfare and housing for a week in Boise, Idaho.


The deadline for submissions is November 30, 2018. We will accept the first 300 full-length plays and close submissions when we receive that many, even if it's before the deadline.

Living on the Edge - Actors' Theatre Grand Rapids is now accepting script submissions.

Anyone is welcome to submit a script for a 10-minute play which utilizes this year's unique theme:


The top 10 scripts will receive a public reading and then 5 of these scripts are chosen to receive a full performance.

The New Play Lab at the annual William Inge Theater Festival is a partnership between the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission and the William Inge Center for the Arts at Independence Community College.

The 4th Annual New Play Lab seeks to connect 20 playwrights with the national theater community through during the 38th Annual William Inge Theater Festival,  May 22-25, 2019.

Selected playwrights receive a professional public staged reading of their play, feedback from national theater artists on their script, exclusive playwriting masterclasses with master playwrights, and full access to all private and public festival events.

This year the festival will honor playwright Octavio Solis with the 2019 Distinguished Achievement in American Theater Award.

Interested playwrights are invited to submit a 10 minute or one-act play (no more than 30 minutes, no more than four actors) to be included in the New Play Lab.

The playwrights receive:

  • A professional staged reading of their play with an audience
  • Feedback on their play facilitated by national theater professionals 
  • Exclusive playwriting masterclasses with master playwrights (including festival honoree Octavio Solis and a Dramatist Guild Fund Traveling Master playwright)
  • Opportunities to meet with theater professionals from across the country
  • VIP passes to all festival events

Applications are due by midnight on Nov. 22, 2018, with notification by Jan. 18, 2019.

The submitted plays will be blind reviewed (the playwright’s name will not be revealed) by a panel of national theater professionals.


Submit a play

  • Playwrights may submit either a 10-minute play or one act play, no more than 30 minutes read-time - not page count. (Plays that are longer than 30 minutes will be disqualified).
  • Plays should require no more than 4 actors. The play may be designed to have actors play multiple roles. If that is the case, doubling must be indicated in the character list.
  • Plays must be submitted in a PDF format.
  • Plays may not include the author’s name or contact information anywhere on the script
  • Playwrights may only submit one play per festival. 


Playwrights are required to attend the festival. If you cannot attend, you are ineligible to apply.
Each playwright is required to attend the Playwright Masterclass with honoree Octavio Solis and the masterclass with the Dramatists Guild Fund Traveling Master playwright. The Masterclasses will take place on Thursday and Friday mornings May 23 and 24.

Each playwright is required to attend the reading of their play during the Play Lab. The Play Lab readings will take place on Thursday and Friday, May 23 and 24.

More details will be sent out to those accepted.

Travel, transportation, and lodging.

Playwrights who are chosen are required to attend the festival in-person starting Thursday morning, May 23rd through Saturday evening, May 25.

Each playwright is responsible for their own travel, transportation, and lodging needs. Subsidized housing on-campus at Independence Community College is available upon request. (Complementary transportation to and from the Tulsa Airport is available upon prior arrangement.)

Conference Fees.

Conference fee is $175 and includes a number of VIP events that are not open to the general audience. Playwrights are responsible for their own conference registration fees.


Professional Public Reading Playwrights will receive a professional public reading of their play, as well as feedback from national theater artists.

Exclusive Seminars and Masterclass The Play Lab Playwrights receive at least two exclusive opportunities to take masterclasses from a master playwright, including a masterclass with the 38th William Inge Festival Honoree Octavio Solis.

Festival Celebration Play Lab Playwrights will have full access to four days of all public and private festival events, including the 2019 award and tribute to the honoree, the other play lab readings, productions, social events, workshops, panels, and much more.

Application Guidelines

Your title page may not have any identifying information -- no author name or address -- or it will be disqualified.

Give your script file the name 2019 + TITLE (for instance, 2018 Bus Stop.pdf).

The script length should be no longer than 30 minutes of stage time and require a maximum of 4 actors.

Applicants must enter a short synopsis of their play as it might appear in the Play Lab program. (Maximum 100 words.)

Applicants must also enter a summary of how they think their play would benefit from a Play Lab reading and panel response. (Maximum 200 words).

Solofest 2019 (LA) seeks solo shows

If you have a solo show, you can submit it for consideration for Solofest 2019.

Deadline for submissions is December 1, 2018.

Solofest is a festival of one person shows, or solo theatre, that is a celebration of the solo journey, not a competition. We do a completely different show every day during January February and the first part of March going on for seven years now.

It's grown into the largest solo theatre festival on the West Coast. This year will be doing 60 shows in 70 days!

We are looking for all types of solo theater. But we do need to have it ready and written and approximately 60 to 80 minutes in length.

Although NYCPlaywrights makes every effort to ensure that information we post meets our standards sometimes unsuitable items get through.

It's unfortunate that some theater organizations have poorly designed and poorly maintained web sites. Their organizational dysfunction (we don't like to think it's deliberate bait and switch) sometimes means they charge submission fees which they do not mention right up front on their web site. This leads to grief for all.

We thank you for your patience and for letting us know when something is wrong. Let's keep working together to get the best opportunities, free of submission fees, out to hard-working playwrights.

The Eric H. Weinberger Award for Emerging Librettists

Amas Musical Theatre's The Eric H. Weinberger Award for Emerging Librettists is a juried cash and production grant to be given annually to support the early work and career of a deserving musical theatre librettist. It commemorates the life and work of playwright/librettist Eric H. Weinberger (1950-2017), who was a Drama Desk Award nominee for Best Book of a Musical (Wanda’s World,) and the playwright/librettist of Class Mothers ’68, which earned Pricilla Lopez a Drama Desk Award nomination.

The winner will receive $2,000 to help pay cost-of-living expenses and will receive development assistance in our 2019 New Works Development Program.

Submissions open on September 13, 2018 and will close November 30, 2018. All submissions must be sent through an online application that canbe found at tinyurl.com/AmasWeinbergerAward.

Only one submission per playwright/librettists will be accepted. The winner will be announced at the Amas Musical Theatre's 50th Anniversary Benefit Event, April 1, 2019.

Submission Requirements

The musical must:
  • Be a full-length show (at least 80 minutes)
  • Have no more than seven actors  (actors may play multiple roles)
  • Be complete and ready for readings, workshops and/or productions
  • Have a demo that is an accurate representation of the music and style of the show (at least five songs)
  • Have full underlying rights clearance of any pre-existing material used in the script (music, source material, etc.)
  • Not have had a full production or be published in any way, even if with a different name.

What to submit

All documents must be submitted as PDF files and they should be named with the part of the submission it refers to and the title of the show in the format of PART_TITLE, i.e.: for Tea for Three; BIO_TEA-FOR-THREE, SYNOPSIS_TEA-FOR-THREE, etc.
  1. Biography and resumes of all contractually attached people such as composer, director, producer to the project
  2. History of the submission’s development, and any previous titles it has gone through (if applicable, maximum one page)
  3. Brief synopsis (maximum 150 words)
  4. Brief artistic statement on the piece itself, including all source material, inspiration, goal, message, etc. (maximum one page)
  5. Proof of rights (if applicable)
  6. Demo and track listings (Demo selections to be posted as a Dropbox link)
  7. PDF document of the full-script and sheet music, if available

Guidelines for Materials

All submissions must adhere to the following or your application will be disqualified before reaching our selection committee.

Proof of Rights

If the musical contains any copyrighted material, please submit a signed letter from the authors and/or underlying rights representative stating that underlying rights have been secured.

  3. Character breakdown (maximum one page)
  4. The complete script with page numbers
For the anonymity of your submission, the full script and sheet music cannot include any information on playwright/ librettist or contractually attached people, previous casts, or any agents. All submissions will go through a blind evaluation process, any personal information you provide will only be available to Amas Musical Theatre staff.

Demo Tracks
  • The recording should be a significant representation of the songs in the show that accurately highlights the style and character of the score and lyrics.
  • Demo tracks should:
  1. Include at least one song from the first 25 pages
  2. Have at least five recordings available – they do not need to be professional or studio quality but they must be clear enough to hear lyrics, melody, and accompaniment
  3. Have singers of appropriate vocal types for their respective roles
  4. Be full songs only, no medleys of spliced songs
For the anonymity of your submission, tracks cannot include any personal identifiers for playwright/librettist(s), the performers recorded, or contractually attached people.

The Winner
  1. Will receive $2,000 to help pay for cost-of-living expenses.
  2. Will receive development assistance in the 2019 New Works Development Program of Amas Musical Theatre.
  3. Will have the selected show rehearsed and performed by New York theatre professionals in an Amas Lab production.
  4. Must be present in New York City for the development process.
  5. Must give the right of first refusal for a world premiere of the selected show that will expire 90 days after Amas Musical Theatre presents the Lab production.

Theatre inspiraTO's 14th Playwriting Contest

This year's creative challenge: Outcast

The play must be a ten-minute play. The theme of "Outcast" must be an integral part of the play.
Outcast (definition): a person who has been rejected by society or a social group or cast out
The story can be a comedy, a drama, a parody, absurd or anything in between (in English only). We also accept musicals. Please note: if you are sending a musical please include an audio recording of the music. The contest is open to anyone, in any part of the world, without geographic or age restrictions.

You must submit online (scroll to the bottom of the page) by November 20, 2018, 11:59 pm E.S.T.  There are no fees. Once you submit you will be taken to a page confirming that we have received your submission. You may only submit one play.

  • The cover page should have the title of the play, the playwright's name and the list of characters. 
  • The pages should be numbered. 
  • The format should be easy to read. 
  • Please name your attachment with the title of your play. 

We accept previously produced plays (but not plays that have produced at inspiraTO before). The playwright must own the rights to the play up to June 9, 2019 (i.e. the script cannot be owned by a publisher).

We are particularly interested in scripts that aren't afraid to make bold choices: quality writing backed by imaginative staging.

What will happen

The plays will be selected by a committee from the Toronto theatre community. If selected, your play will be performed in Toronto, Canada from May 30 - June 8, 2019. Between fifteen to twenty four, ten-minute plays will be selected and performed. 1st Prize: $500 CDN. Should your play be selected for inclusion in the festival, you are giving the non-exclusive right to Theatre inspiraTO to produce and perform the play in the 14th Annual inspiraTO Festival in Toronto (Canada's largest ten-minute play festival), in May and June 2019. The inspiraTO Festival will find the cast, crew and market your play. Authors retain copyright and full ownership of their plays.

Only those playwrights whose plays have been selected will be notified by January 1, 2019.

What does a good ten-minute play need?

A ten-minute play is distinct from a sketch, or a skit; it is a compact play, with a beginning, middle and an end. You need a character facing obstacles in pursuit of some specific goal. You need rising action, conflict, and a climactic moment and your play must tell a complete story.

Generally speaking, scripts (including the stage directions, character names and dialogue) that are over 1,900 words are more than ten minutes long on stage. This does not mean that all plays under 1,900 words are under ten minutes, so be wise: use Word Count and read the play out loud while timing the length (including all pauses). You don't want your hard work rejected because it was too long.

SETC/Stage Rights Ready to Publish Award

Established in 2016, the SETC/Stage Rights Ready to Publish Award is a program dedicated to developing, publishing, and licensing new works by members of the SETC community.
The awards process is open to all and the requirements for submission are: one completed full-length play (no musicals, short plays, or short play compilations) that is either unproduced, has had a produced staged reading, or a world premiere production, and a completed submission form which is attached below.

The winning play will receive:
• Publication in the Stage Rights catalog of plays and musicals.
• A panel reading of the play at SETC 2019, hosted by members of the SETC Playwriting committee.
• Prominent display of the final published play by Stage Rights at SETC 2020.

In addition, the author of the winning play will receive:
• SETC 2019 Convention Registration.
• $400 royalty advance that the winner can use toward their expenses to attend SETC 2019.

 Submission Policy

The Ready to Publish Award has an initial open policy for the submission of plays to be considered. We are seeking completed full-length pieces that are either unproduced or have had one world premiere production or produced staged reading suitable for professional, educational and amateur venues.

• Include a complete copy of the script.

Now in our third year, Corkscrew Theater Festival is a curated presentation of new work by early career artists concentrated over four weeks at the Paradise Factory Theater in the summer of 2019. This year’s festival, running July 10-August 4, will contain four fully realized productions receiving ten performances each, and four “reading slots” for work to be heard publicly for the first time. Corkscrew seeks projects that demonstrate real collaboration, especially if they are being created through innovative or nontraditional partnerships or models.

We believe in increasing access to professional production opportunities for a wide range of early career artists and enabling their success in those opportunities. We enthusiastically support under-represented artists of all or no genders, artists of color, and LGBTQIA+ artists. Corkscrew’s model is an extension of our belief that we can do more together than we can individually: by presenting our work in a festival setting that facilitates meaningful collaboration between and among its artists, we mutually benefit.

From selection to final curtain, we provide casting assistance, design roundtables, a weekly Writers’ Group, readings in springtime for each of the five productions, and regular face-to-face meetings with our festival staff. We guarantee at least sixteen hours of technical rehearsal time and curtain times at prime theater-going hours. As a festival large enough to break through the clutter, yet still intimately connected to its artists, we are uniquely positioned to pursue external validation in the form of reviews, press features, and audience testimony. While there are many summer festivals, we believe this artist-centric approach distinguishes us within the New York theater community.

Cone Man Running Productions seeks 5-minute plays/monologues

Cone Man Running Productions is announcing a nationwide call for the third iteration of our series ‘Five Minute Mile – Theatre on the Run.’ The series will perform in at Studio 101 in Houston, Texas.

The show will run from March 28 - April 13, 2019.

Michael Weems will serve as Artistic Director for the series.

We will be again staging this one-of-a-kind theatre festival. Each evening, twenty (20) plays will be performed off book by a core ensemble of actors. Eight (8) of those plays will be set for each evening, six (6) will be drawn at random by audience members and the last six (6) will be voted on by the audience (based on title, the blurb you provide, and word of mouth). Every night will be a different experience!


• Submissions will be accepted from Saturday September 1st through Sunday November 18th- 12pm noon (CST)

• This festival is open to current residents of the United States. English language plays only.

• Five-minute plays or monologues. No scenes or parts of other plays. We’re looking for compact plays/monologues with a start, middle, and end. Special note for monologues: PLEASE take the time to read them out loud, time them, and allow for inflection and beats.

• For plays, no less than 3 pages and no more than 4 pages (12 pt font and 1” margins), for monologues, no more than 1.5 full pages (12 pt font and 1” margins). There are no exceptions to this rule.

• Please include a short blurb (one to two sentences) describing your play.

• No works that have been published by a licensed publisher. Academic or anthology publications for which you hold the copyright are okay. If your play is optioned for publication prior to the production dates, please contact us ASAP as this will make your play ineligible for our purposes.

• Previous productions okay if not staged within Texas.

• No work that has been submitted previously to Cone Man Running or Five Minute Mile, even if revised or significantly rewritten.

• Minimal set and properties. Presume having no more than a few chairs and a table, very limited properties, and include no lighting cues other than ‘lights up/down’.

• No musicals, screenplays, adaptations, or theater for young audiences.

• Three (3) submissions per playwright - however no more than two (2) pieces by a playwright will be potentially staged. If you have co-authored a work, this counts as one of your three submissions for each writer.

• Please submit all files in only: MS word or pdf.

• Please note, all plays will be photographed and recorded for archival and marketing purposes. In submitting your work, you acknowledge and allow for your show to be recorded and photographed.

• Please do not include any identifying information on your script – in your cover letter/email please list your name, phone number, email address, physical address and your play’s title and blurb.

• We will not provide any feedback on scripts.
Special Note: Any submissions that to not meet all guidelines will be ineligible and immediately deleted without response.

• From the submissions, 50-75 plays will be shortlisted as semi-finalists and will be read by our committee. We plan to announce the selected final thirty-two (32) plays by Sunday, December 16th, 2018. The selected plays will be listed on our Facebook page and webpage (both listed below) on this date.

• No submission fee.

• Cone Man Running reserves the right to decline scripts for any reason we see fit.

• If one of your plays are selected and you are able to attend, you will be provided with two complimentary tickets to the show. As a volunteer organization, we will be unable to provide any royalty or compensation/funding towards transportation or lodging, if you choose to attend. Your show will be guaranteed a minimum of two performances. If the playwright can attend, we will work with them to assure their play is one of the set plays performed that evening.

The Theater Project’s annual short play competition awards the winner for Best Play a $500 prize. The contest is open to adult playwrights in the New Jersey and New York metropolitan area. There is no fee to submit your play for consideration. Plays are accepted in the fall for the March 22, 23, 24 event.

Plays can be either dramas or comedies but must be no more than 15 minutes running time. This restriction is absolute and plays that exceed 15 minutes will not be considered. Sets, lighting and sound requirements must be simple. No elaborate props or effects. The Theater Project does not charge a submission fee for its THINK FAST one-act festival.

We do, however, charge a production fee to help underwrite the costs of mounting our three performance festival. 

Our $150 fee for playwrights invited to participate in the THINK FAST festival will not cover all of our upfront costs.

We do not own our building. The Theater Project rents the Burgdorff Center for the Arts in Maplewood. Everything we produce requires the hiring of front-of-house staff as well as technicians to handle light, sound, etc. We also hire a stage manager for the festival.

And, at the end of the day, the winning play receives a $500 award.

Although we would rather not charge a production fee, the reality is that without help from participating playwrights, we would not be able to offer this showcase for new works

We are seeking ridiculously entertaining original musicals suitable for family audiences. Ideal musicals will feature stories about young people and families with strong plot lines and great characters. Please note, we are not seeking ‘issue’ shows, and we are not seeking adaptations of children’s literature or other published works. We are looking for entertaining, engaging new musicals by early career and/or emerging writers and composers.

We’re defining ‘early career’ and ‘emerging’ on a case by case basis. Certainly a 21-year-old with a published play or a major production of their work would not be eligible. However, a 35-year-old who is unpublished without a major production of their work would qualify. Bottom line: If you consider yourself ‘early career’ and/or ‘emerging,’ we welcome you to submit. (Please note, this is not a competition for children).

Submissions will be open from June 1 - December 1, 2018. Three works will be chosen to be a performed as staged readings during a weekend-long festival in March 2019. Committee selections to be made by January 30, 2019. Writing teams will be invited to attend performance weekend.  Selected musicals will be considered for full production in 2020.

Submission guidelines for Pantochino’s inaugural “POW” Festival are as follows:

  • All submissions must be full-length musicals suitable for family audiences.
  • Musicals having already received a full production are not eligible.
  • Musicals that are already published are not eligible.
  • Musical revues are not eligible.
  • Musicals that have had a workshop or reading remain eligible.
  • Only one submission per playwright-composer-lyricist team

We are accepting proposals for new work -- including plays, musicals, dance pieces, and more -- for development in Fresh Ground Pepper's 2019 - 2020 Season. This is a project-development series that will culminate in a reading or workshop presentation at the 2020 Fresh Ground Pepper festival.

Bi-monthly meetings will take place in New York City; a week-long PlayGroup retreat will take place in summer 2019.

The Fresh Ground Pepper PlayGround PlayGroup hosts artists in a 16 month, residency program that celebrates the joyful creation of new work.

Artists will attend bi-monthly meetings, where fresh work and inspirations are shared, where exploration is encouraged, and where the snacks flow freely. We encourage you to submit the project you’re most passionate about: the one that keeps you up at night, the one you think you shouldn’t create, the one that you think might change the world, or the one you have no idea how to handle.

Deadline for submissions is 11:59 pm on Tuesday, November 20th. We may follow up with you with more specific questions about your work and/or to request additional materials for review.

Arundel Festival Theatre Trail 2019 (UK)

The Arundel Festival Theatre Trail, conceived and presented by Drip Action Theatre Company, is now in its seventeenth year.

It performs at the end of August, on each of the Arundel Festival’s eight days, eight short plays at eight different venues all over Arundel – for example, in a community hall, a restaurant, a football club or Arundel Jailhouse.  An audience of over 2,000 came to see the eight 2017 Theatre Trail plays.

The Trail is firmly established as one of the major components in the Festival and is a great showcase for both new and established writers, both from the UK and beyond.

Plays should be between 30 and 40 minutes long, with practicable casting, props and effects.

MiniFest Script Submissions

MiniFest is a week-long festival of one-act plays featuring limited cast sizes and scenographic demands.  Every year hundreds of plays from around the world are submitted for juried evaluation.  A Play Reading Committee creates a short list which is then submitted to an Executive Committee that selects four to six plays for an actor-centered staging by members of the Acadia Theatre Company.

Rules and Guidelines

Anyone may submit up to two original scripts, provided that neither has been professionally performed.

All script submissions must be in WORD format and be accompanied by a completed electronic application.

Scripts will be chosen for their dramatic quality, but also for their suitability for staging by students in our Theatre program.  Scripts with limitedAll scripts must be submitted electronically in Word format.  No other formats will be accepted.

Each playwright may submit only two (2) plays for the competition.

The Covering Page of each script should include:

  • the title of the play
  • the playwright's name
  • contact information for the playwright (address, telephone number & email address)
  • All subsequent pages should be numbered and should include the play's title in a running header or footer.  As the jury process is anonymouse, plase do NOT include the playwright's name on these pages.

Please ensure that all document editing features are unlocked in order to enable removal or manipulation of pages for jury and production purposes.  No changes to scripts proper will be made. number of characters and modest production requirements will be preferred.  Running times should not exceed 30 minutes.

Minifest may present as many as eight plays over three consecutive nights.  Each may may be presented as many as three times.

No recording of performances will be permitted.

Successful playwrights will not be offered royalties.

Late submissions will not be accepted.

Short Works Feminist Theatre Festival in Montreal

Revolution They Wrote and MainLine Theatre are proud to present the fifth annual Short Works Feminist Theatre Festival, a 4-day event which showcases new short works of feminist performance and art. The goal is to create a space for feminist artists of all backgrounds to gather, develop, and produce short works that explore themes of intersectional feminism.

What does feminist theatre and performance mean? We are open to any style or approach, however, for a work to be considered feminist it needs to centre on equality and the intersections of gendered oppression.

There is no cost involved with applying or being produced in the festival.
Jurying takes place in late December and applicants, wether selected to be featured in the festival or not will be notified shortly after. Some feedback may be given to groups not selected upon request.

Dates for the festival are March 22-24, 2019.

Artists featured in the festival will be provided with:
  • Access to 10 hours of rehearsal space at MainLine Theatre;
  • Additional rehearsal space on a case by case basis;
  • A public reading or 4 nights of performance of the work at the festival;
  • 60% of the box office funds shared evenly between the other festival works in the program.

Vermont Pride Theater at Chandler (VPT) requests submissions for its ninth annual Summer Pride Festival, July 26-28 and August 2-4 in the historic Chandler Center for the Arts, Randolph (VT).

We are seeking full-length scripts with strong LGBTQ content that present the issues and concerns of today's LGBTQ persons, especially those living in rural areas, in a positive way. Scripts should have a mid-sized ensemble, with multi-generational plays welcome. Staging in a community-theater setting should be feasible. No musicals, please.

Berklee Theater Arts Collaborative (BTAC), the program for musical theater performance, stage management, conducting, and songwriting minors at Berklee College of Music, is seeking new musical submissions for main stage, staged-reading, and studio workshop productions.

Scripts at all stages of development are welcome

Students work under the direction of Berklee's faculty industry professionals to produce and perform all aspects of the new work, including new arrangements where appropriate

Performances are presented publicly at the Berklee Performance Center and other Berklee stage venues. High quality video recording may be available for archival and portfolio reference (subject to individual contract agreements). In many cases, pieces are performed with a full live orchestra. Writers have access to professional creative and production team feedback. Writers maintain full ownership of their work

The search committee is primarily seeking interesting stories with strong writing and music to feature our culturally diverse student body and promote the program's main goal: to help shape the narrative for the next generation of Broadway creators and performers by changing the landscape of theater to be fully inclusive of actors, directors, and writers of diverse backgrounds

BTAC prioritizes musicals with:

You may enter as many monologues as you choose, for either the Mens book, the Women's book or for both books. 
1. By submitting your 1-2 minute monologue for consideration by Smith & Kraus Publishers (SK), for inclusion in SK's The Best Mens Monologues 2019 and/or The Best Women's Monologues 2019, you grant SK permission to publish the monologue in said books in print, ebook, or any other form in which the book may be published. Monologue must be written in English. 
2. If the submitted monologue(s) is selected for inclusion in said titles, you will receive as remuneration:  One page featuring the monologue and a "facing page" to be used in support of an actors performance as well as in the promotion of you and your writing career. Finalist plays will be produced at our Annual Festival in June 2019.

High school-aged playwrights are encouraged to enter. Plays must include a letter from a teacher or school administrator, written on school letterhead, verifying that the play was written during high school, in addition to the guidelines below. If the committee chooses to name a high school entry as a finalist for the 15th annual contest, the play will be produced with the other finalists in our festival in June 2019.


Please read the following rules and requirements carefully.
Plays not meeting the requirements will be disqualified.


The play should be approximately ten-minutes in length.

The play must have no more than five on-stage (speaking and non-speaking) characters.

You may submit only one play, so send us your best! Please do not make more than one submission.

The play should be in a "play format" making it easy for the readers.

(We like 12-point, easy to read fonts, such as Times New Roman or Arial)

The play must be unpublished and unproduced at the time of submission to our contest. We do screen for this, so don't send us your play if it has been produced. (Staged readings are not counted as "produced.")

Submitting your play to our contest grants Lakeshore Players the right to produce your play in our annual festival and photograph and/or videotape it for archival purposes, if it is chosen as a finalist.


 The play should have simple technical requirements. There won't be a set — a few furniture pieces and a few props only — we only have about one minute in between plays to change scenes
As a community theatre, we want to appeal to the largest possible audience, therefore plays with excessive offensive language are less likely to be selected - please keep that in consideration.

The Writers’ Round Table 2019

The Joust is now accepting applications for our 2019 Writers' Round Table, a developmental playwriting group.

We are seeking playwrights to submit proposals for in-process, unproduced plays that re-imagine and/or subvert systemic norms (political, societal, religious, etc.). The Writers' Round Table will meet 2 times per month over a 9 month period to develop their plays with constructive feedback from other playwrights, a developmental workshop with actors, and dramaturgy from the artistic staff of The Joust, culminating in a reading festival produced by the Joust Theatre Company. Playwrights will receive a modest stipend for participating in the Round Table.

Romsey Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (Italy) Play Writing Competition 2019

Romsey Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (RAODS) have launched their 321 Play Writing Competition 2019 and are looking for writers to submit entries which will be performed in Italy!
The competition comprises three separate categories: Physical, Monologue and One Act, each with a maximum of 3 performers  Writers are invited to submit entries for any of the categories. The winning script in each category will be performed in May 2019 at Treviglio in Italy, by RAODS members.

There are three competition categories:
  1. Physical – limited dialogue. Maximum of three performers. To include comedy. Duration 10-20 minutes. Cash prize of £75 for winning entry.
  2. Monologue – up to three monologues in one piece. Performers may be on stage at the same time, but do not interact with each other. This piece to be translated into Italian, with the translation made available to the audience. Can be comedic and/or serious. Theme is being British. Total duration 15-30 minutes. Cash prize of £100 for winning entry.
  3. One act play – maximum of three performers (though performers can be multi-role if required). No set theme, but it is to be borne in mind that this is to be performed to an audience whose first language is not English. Duration between 40 and 60 minutes. Cash prize of £125 for winning entry. 
  • Entrants may enter scripts for any number of categories.
  • Entrants may submit multiple entries for each category.
  • All competition entries must be new writing. 
  • Each script must be unpublished. 
  • Each script must not have been performed professionally.
  • Each script must be the work of the credited writer(s).
  • Copyright and ownership of scripts remains with the writer(s).
  • By entering this competition, the writer(s) grant RAODS a license to perform the winning scripts for a period of 12 months from 1st February 2019.
  • Scripts must be submitted by email to info@plazatheatre.com by 30th November 2018. Please include a postal address and telephone contact details.
  • RAODS members are not excluded from taking part in the competition.
  • Each entry will be judged by a panel appointed by RAODS.  At least two members of the judging panel will not be RAODS members.
  • The decision of the judging panel is final.
  • The winning scripts will be announced on January 31st 2019 via Facebook, Twitter and a press release.  The winners will be contacted directly via email.

Moonbox Productions (Boston) seeks one-act plays

Moonbox Productions, in Boston, is accepting submissions for one-act plays, to be produced in February as part of our Emerging Artists Program, in Boston’s BCA Plaza Black Box Theatre.

Plays should be written by playwrights living with disability and/or explore disability-related themes.

Playwrights at any career stage are invited to participate; “Emerging Artists” refers to the production staff, not necessarily to the playwright.  Performances will be supertitled. ASL interpreted, and audio described.  The BCA Plaza is wheelchair-accessible.

This class might be for you if you:
  • Have a draft of a play that you are ready to begin the revision process on, but need to get organized before embarking on rewrites. 
  • Need some inspiration to jumpstart the rewriting process.
In this class you will:
  • Bring in a draft of a play that you are revising or would like to start revising. 
  • Interrogate your play by diving into writing exercises geared toward rewriting, which you will apply to your play. 
  • Share your work along the way, so you can hear and reflect on the drafts of your scenes as you go. 
  • Have a one-on-one consultation with Melissa on the second day of the workshop to ensure you have a clear picture of what you want your play to be.
By the end of this class you will:
  • Have a focused idea of where your play is headed and clear agenda for your revision process. 
  • Be ready to join our Rewriting Your Draft class and start the process of revising your play!

SUBMISSION: The Northport One-Act Play Festival is a wonderful opportunity to showcase one-act plays and offer the theater community an opportunity to produce a performance of those plays.

There is NO FEE to submit an application and play for consideration to be in the Festival. You may submit up to 2 plays for the Festival. A separate application must accompany each play submitted.

JUDGING/PARTICIPATION: Plays submitted for the Festival will be reviewed by our panel of judges. The plays may also be read during a meeting at the Northport Reader’s Theater, if time allows, prior to the selection deadline. Playwrights whose plays are presented at a Reader’s Theater meeting will be invited to attend. Playwrights will be notified on or about December 15, 2018 if their play is chosen for the Festival. At that time, each playwright must submit A PARTICIPATION FEE of $75.00 per accepted script, which will help defray some of the expenses – e.g. space rental, printing, and publicity - with the Release Agreement by January 1, 2019. Playwrights will receive one complimentary ticket to each Performance of their play plus a DVD.

Important: The Northport One-Act Play Festival is held in a church. Please consider the language and situations used in your script. If you feel that your play is not appropriate for younger audiences, please let us know so that we are aware of this.

3) Include the character breakdown on the second page of your script;

4) Include the Setting that your play occurs (i.e., an apartment in NYC.) and the Time (i.e. the
Present.). This information will be used in the program.

5) Note: Ease of production is also considered as part of a play’s possible selection for the
Festival. We recommend one simple set and no complicated props, sound or lighting
requirements. You will be permitted to have opening and closing music;

6) Also submit a digital copy of your script, either on a CD included with the script, or by email
to NorthportPlays@gmail.com.

7) Please include a Self Addressed Stamped Postcard if you would like notification that we have
received your script.

The 2019 Northport One-Act Play Festival will be held at St Paul’s United Methodist Church, 270 Main St, Northport, NY 11768.

We request that you be available to attend your play’s performances if at all possible. An Open Discussion with the playwrights, directors, and cast will follow each performance if time allows.


1. REMEMBER: If you do not produce your own play, a group from the local theater community will be doing so. That group must find space to conduct their own rehearsals. The Northport One-Act Play Festival will provide for One (1) cue-to-cue technical rehearsal, which will last no longer than 20 minutes in the theater during the week preceding the Festival. There will also be One (1) dress rehearsal on the stage. All rehearsals are scheduled in the order that plays will be presented in the Festival. Each program consists of up to 7 plays. A mandatory preview on April 13th will be scheduled, and must be attended by Director and actors. Half-hour time slots will be offered between 1:00 and 7:00pm.

2. LIGHTING AND SOUND: There will be a basic lighting plot that all plays in the Festival use. Any additional equipment (i.e., microphone, musical instruments, etc.) must be provided by the Directors of the play. Any music/sound effects must be on CD or sent as an MP3 file and supplied by preview day, April 13th along with stage manager, sound and lighting cue scripts.

3. SETS: We will assist in any way possible to provide basic sets, but keep the scenery and props to a minimum. Any plans to use a large set piece to support the production must be mentioned to the producers of the play before April 13th. Your cast will be asked to help clear your set after each performance.

4. RUNNING TIME: It is very important that you give us the running time of your play so we can accurately put together the running time of each Program. The maximum running time for a play in the Festival is 20 minutes. Any play going longer in rehearsal will require some editing. The minimum running time is 7 minutes.

5. REHEARSALS: Directors and cast must be available to present their play to Festival producers April 13th (time to be determined) so that the producers are aware of its current running time and readiness for the Festival. Note: Producers may request the directors to have playwrights make edits to reduce the running time of the play at this point if it is determined that it will run past 20 minutes. Directors and cast must attend tech and dress rehearsals on the dates assigned during the week preceding the Festival.

6. ACTORS: If asked, management can assist in casting by providing contact information to appropriate actors and publicizing your auditions. You must send descriptions of open roles e.g. age, sex, etc.

7. PERFORMANCES: All plays will be assigned to either Program 1 or Program 2. Program 1 will be performed the evening of Friday, May 3rd and the matinee of Saturday, May 4th. Program 2 will be performed on the evening of Saturday, April May 4th and the matinee of Sunday, May 5th.

8. TASTE OF THE FEST: A performance of the plays chosen by the Festival Organizers as “A Taste of the Fest” will be invited to perform at the Northport Library on Sunday, May 19th at 2:00pm, followed by a discussion with the playwrights, directors and cast.

9. No Royalties or other monetary compensations are given for these performances.

The Richard Rodgers Awards 2019

These awards, created and endowed by Richard Rodgers in 1978 for the development qf the musical theater, subsidize fall productions, studio productions, and staged readings by nonprqfit theaters in New York Ciry qf works by composers and writers who are not already established in this field. The winners are selected by a jury qf the American Academy qf Arts and Letters.


The term "musical theater" is understood to include musicals, plays with songs, thematic revues, or any comparable work. The submission of innovative and experimental work is encouraged. The work submitted must be of significant length to fill an evening, and it may consist of a group of smaller, related pieces.

The jury will consider only completed works. Care should be taken to submit the work in its best possible form as it may  not  be  submitted  again,  in  another  year,  even  if substantially revised.

Only one submission by a collaborative group or a sole creator will be accepted. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

Works by members of the Academy and previous winners of the production awards are not eligible for consideration. Former winners of Richard Rodgers awards for staged readings or studio productions may submit new works.

An applicant whose works in the musical theater have received professional or amateur productions in New York City or out of town is eligible unless, in the judgment of the jury, the applicant has already achieved significant recognition in the field of musical theater through the work submitted or through any previous work. Under special circumstances  and  at  the  discretion of the jury, applicants who have achieved recognition in fields outside the musical theater may be eligible. Works which have been produced by professional theater companies before a paying audience are eligible only if such productions received no more than 21 performances  by a for­ profit company or 50 performances by a nonprofit company.

The name(s) of the author(s) must be blocked out on each of the items submitted,  with the exception of the application form. Write only the title of the work on the script, plot summary, CD.

Entry must include four items:

Script with lyrics, preferably not bound. Binder clips, folders, or loose pages are acceptable. Do not send score, videos, or visuals.

Half-page synopsis of the action and a list of characters.

CD must contain at least 45minutes of music, including a minimum of eight songs, recorded in chronological order. Orchestrations are not necessary; piano and vocals are sufficient. Songs must be in sequence on the CD and each song's clearly typed into the script where it appears.

Please include a separate track sheet of recorded songs with page numbers indicating where they appear in the script and specify the total number of minutes recorded.

Application form signed by all collaborators in a sealed envelope with the title of the work on the outside. Applicants submitting work which has already been  produced  must  give full information concerning these  productions,  including programs. A work is not  eligible if one of the collaborators is deceased.

If the submitted work (or a portion thereofj is an adaptation of material which is not in the public domain, candidates must submit licenses, permissions, or  authorizations necessary  to permit the work to be produced in conformity with applicable copyright laws. The music must be original.

Materials  will  be  returned  if   a   self-addressed,   stamped   mailer   is   enclosed. Addresses must be valid for at least six months. The Academy will take all due care of materials but it cannot be held responsible for their safe return.
