The International Playwriting Competition - from the BBC World Service & British Council in partnership with Commonwealth Writers and co-produced by The Open University

The competition is open from 1 October 2015 to 31 January 2016. The competition is open to new and established writers, provided they live outside the UK.

In order to enter you need to send:

• A script for a 53 minute radio play with up to 6 central characters - we are unable to return these, so make sure you keep a copy

• A synopsis which outlines your play is no longer than 400 words

• A completed form (download here), attached to your play and synopsis.

There are three prizes

English as a First Language Winner

£2200 sterling will be given for the overall winning playwright of the best play written with English as a first language and a trip to London to see the play being recorded for broadcast on the BBC World Service and to attend a prize-giving evening.

English as a Second Language Winner

£2200 sterling will be given for the overall winning playwright of the best play written with English as a second language and a trip to London to see the play being recorded for broadcast on the BBC World Service and to attend a prize-giving evening.
The Georgi Markov Prize

In memory of the writer, BBC World Service journalist and broadcaster Georgi Markov (1929-1978) who championed freedom of creative expression, this prize is for the writer of the script identified by the judges as showing most promise. The script will be selected from the International Radio Playwriting Competition shortlist and will be an entry which, whilst not deemed ready for broadcast in its current form, shows outstanding potential.

The Georgi Markov Prize includes a standard return flight to London, with 2 weeks accommodation – a week of which will be spent with the BBC’s London Radio Drama department and a week with BBC World Service. These 2 weeks will coincide with the making of the winning plays from the International Radio Playwriting Competition and the winner of the Georgi Markov prize will attend the prize-giving ceremony and receive recognition at the same time.

This prize does not include recording or broadcast of the script and there is no cash alternative. The prize has been established by the BBC World Service and the Open University, in association with Annabel and Sasha Markova.


1. Entry is only open to anyone who is over the age of 18 as at 31 January 2016 who is not normally a resident of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Channel Islands or Isle of Man (“UK”). Individuals who have lived or worked in the UK on a temporary basis for no more than 12 months at the time of entering the competition are also eligible. Professional and previously published writers are eligible to enter, but this is not a requirement of entry. We may require proof of eligibility.

2. Entrants must not be BBC or British Council or The Open University or Commonwealth Foundation employees, their close relatives or any person connected to the competition. Proof of age, identity and eligibility may be requested.

3. Entrants should write a radio play of approximately fifty three minutes’ length on any subject of their choice. Adaptations of novels are not eligible.

4. Plays entered must not have been professionally produced in any medium (an informal play-reading is acceptable; a play-reading with a professional director and in front of a non-paying audience is acceptable, but a performance involving payment to actors and/or a paying audience is not).

5. Plays entered in the competition must not, at the time they are submitted, have been offered for publication, performance or broadcast in any other form or medium to any other person or company. Nor can they, at the time of entry or during the course of the competition, have been entered for any other competition. The winning playwrights will be deemed to have entered into an undertaking not to accept offers for their entries from other broadcasters or publishers before December 2016.

6. All scripts submitted must be approximately 53 minutes in length – this usually equates to a minimum of 45 pages of A4 paper (or equivalent) and a maximum of 65 pages (note, a rough guide is a minute per page; please read and time your play before you send it). The play should have a maximum of six central characters (there may be up to 3 small “doubling” characters too, who don’t have more than a few lines each). There must be no central roles for children.

7. Your script must be accompanied by a short synopsis which outlines the complete story of the play. This must be no more than 400 words.

8. There are two categories for entry. One is for entrants who speak English as a first language and the other is for entrants with English as a second language. The BBC may require proof of eligibility for the selected category before announcing a winner. For translated entries, it is the responsibility of the entrant to ensure the translated script fully complies with these rules and entry requirements and the entrant must have the right to enter into a contract on the translator or translators’ behalf as per Rule 21. No additional payment can be made by the BBC for translations.

9. The play must be written substantially or entirely in English. Unfortunately, we do not have the facility to offer a translation service. Entries that have been translated must acknowledge this fact by giving a credit to the translator or translators. Entries that have been translated will be entered in the English as a first language category.

10. The competition opens on 1 October 2015 and closes on 31 January 2016.
Entries must be received at your British Council office or at the BBC in London by midnight GMT on 31 January 2016. Entries received after this time will not be considered.

11. 12. All entries must be accompanied by a completed copy of the entry form which can be downloaded here

13. Entrants can enter individually or as part of a group. If entering as a group, all entrants must meet the entry requirements and be eligible for the same category. No member should have also entered individually. Please note, the prize only includes payment for one airfare per category.

14. In the case of an entry by two or more writers, the BBC will need written or email confirmation from each writer involved that they are prepared to take a share of the prize money and are prepared to receive those funds from a nominee who will be one of the writers, as the prize money will be paid to one individual only. The nominee will be selected by the writers and it will be his or her responsibility to distribute these funds to the other writers and the organisers can take no responsibility for that aspect. As per Clause 8, there will be no additional payment from the BBC for translations.

15. Only one entry per person is permitted including any group entries. If you submit more than one entry, only the first entry received will be considered. Please do not submit plays you have entered before.

16. You may choose to submit your entry under a pseudonym (which will be the name it shall be promoted and published under), however you must include your real name on each entry for verification purposes.

17. All entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not infringe the rights of any other party. The BBC accepts no liability if entrants ignore these rules and entrants agree to fully indemnify the BBC against any claims by any third party arising from any breach of these rules.

18. Entries must not contain defamatory, obscene or any other unsuitable material, such as that which may cause offence to a wide audience of all ages. Content should not contain excessive swearing or obscene language.

19. Entrants retain the copyright in their entries but grant to the BBC an exclusive licence to broadcast their entry on radio, as well as use it on any online platforms in line with the BBC’s Radio Drama Agreement as agreed with the Radio Writers’ Forum (see 23 below). Entrants reserve certain secondary rights in other media subject to BBC short exclusive options. Entrants also grant a licence to Commonwealth Writers and The Open University to publish extracts of their scripts, along with their name(s), on the Commonwealth Writers and Open University websites and to The Open University to make their content available within OU courses for teaching and learning purposes, including to OU registered students on any secure platform or copy-protected medium.

20. The prize for each of the winners of the English as a 1st language category and the English as a 2nd language category will consist of £2200 sterling and a trip to London (standard airfare and accommodation for one person) to see the winning play being recorded for broadcast on the BBC World Service and attend a prize-giving event. The prize is as stated and cannot be deferred or transferred. There will be no cash alternatives.

21. As with any new play, the BBC may require further drafts and revisions of the winning plays. Winners must be willing and able to undertake redrafting and revision work in conjunction with the BBC and accept that they will work with the Producer on re-writes of the play. This work is likely to take place between June 2016 and September 2016 and the winning entrants will need to keep time free, and remain contactable, to achieve this. This work will be completed with the winning entrant using email or the most suitable method available. We reserve the right to revoke a play’s prize winning status if this work is not completed.

22. The BBC will reserve the right to make minor cuts, changes and edits to the winners' final draft scripts and all editorial control rests with the BBC.

23. You must inform the BBC if any character/s or situation/s in the play relate to real situation/s or real people, either living or dead

24. Subject to a satisfactory recording being made, the winning plays will be broadcast on BBC World Service at some point around Spring 2017. Winners will first be required to enter into a contract with the BBC on the standard terms and conditions applicable for broadcast of BBC Radio Drama. No fee will be payable other than the £2200 sterling offered as prize money for one broadcast cycle and the BBC's standard package of rights under that contract. If repeated on the World Service, a sum of £1100 will be payable for the first repeat cycle and thereafter the BBC will have certain broadcasting and other rights all in accordance with the contract.

Last Frontier Theatre Conference seeks submissions for developmental Play Lab

The deadline for submissions to present plays in the Play Lab at the 2016 Last Frontier Theatre Conference is November 23, 2015. The 24th annual Conference will take place June 12-18, 2016, in Valdez, Alaska.

Selected plays receive public readings, with both public and private feedback sessions led by theatre professionals. Authors must register for the Conference and be in attendance for their reading.

Accepted writers will also have an additional opportunity to present their work in the 10-Page Play Slam, the Monologue Workshop, and the late-night Fringe Festival.

Authors are asked to submit through the call for plays on the website, www.theatreconference.org using the on-line form on the Play Lab link. Guidelines:

· Plays must be received by November 23, 2015

· One submission per author.

· Submissions should run between 20 minutes and 2 hours.

· They can be of any genre except musical.

· The play should not have received a professional production; readings and amateur productions are acceptable. Authors should be interested in developing this play.

4th Annual New Works Festival

Working Title: comedy Comedy COMEDY!? or #LoLz

Team Z and our team of directors will select six “10 minute” plays to be featured in this year's festival!

We are now accepting submissions for our 4th Annual New Works Festival. This year's theme: Comedy. All types of comedy: farce, camp, satire, dark comedy, melodrama, rom-com, parodies, surreal etc.

We look specifically for pieces dealing with LGBTQ issues and or written by a member of the LGBTQ community.

This is a 4-5 night event in February 2016 where the writers of the pieces have an opportunity to discuss their work in a safe open forum on one evening. This year's festival will be held at the Eclectic Theater on Capitol Hill in Seattle WA.

2016 Festival: April 22-24

The Pacific Playwrights Festival (PPF) annually presents seven new plays in staged readings and full productions during a three-day period. Audiences consist of local playgoers and representatives from theatres nationwide.

PPF provides a gathering place for writers and theatre professionals to connect and share ideas and interests in the context of a festival that promotes the latest and best in American playwriting.

South Coast Repertory launched the first annual Pacific Playwrights Festival in June 1998. The first festival consisted of five staged readings, workshops and the world premiere of Richard Greenberg's Hurrah at Last, in the final performances of its five-week run.

Since then, the Pacific Playwrights Festival has showcased as many as 10 new American plays each year, including the world premieres of Beau Willimon's The Parisian Woman, Julia Cho's The Language Archive, Amy Freed's The Beard of Avon, Lynn Nottage's Intimate Apparel, Rolin Jones' The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow, Noah Haidle's Mr. Marmalade and Richard Greenberg's Our Mother's Brief Affair.

SCR is currently considering material for the 19th annual Pacific Playwrights Festival, drawing from commissioned work, projects nominated by other theatres and scripts submitted for production consideration.

Amy’s Horse is seeking short plays

Amy’s Horse is seeking short plays, up to 15 minutes in length, to be produced as part of our podcast.

What is Amy’s Horse?

Amy’s Horse is a theatre podcast that produces two short plays per episode. Actors in multiple locations connect to our Vermont studio via the internet for the live recording of the show. 

The podcast launched in July, and so far we've produced 14 plays in our first 7 episodes, featuring the work of 13 playwrights and 30 actors! The episodes are available on our website or through the iTunes Store, where the podcast is consistently rated as “New & Noteworthy”.

The goal is to bring together emerging playwrights and established actors to read new works, then chat about them. At the end of each reading, the actors and author stick around to speak about the play and promote their current projects. It’s a very light-hearted, fun, and relaxed atmosphere.


- Plays should be unpublished at time of submission
- Small casts preferable
- We are mainly seeking comedies, but dramas also considered
- Plays must be a maximum of 15 minutes in length

Most importantly, if you listen to our existing episodes, you’ll see that the plays we select lend themselves to an audio only production. We use minimal sound effects and stage directions, so plays with extensive visual elements or action may not work well in our format. Please submit accordingly.

High School Playwrights

High school-aged playwrights are encouraged to enter. Plays must include a letter from a teacher or school administrator, written on school letterhead, verifying that the play was written during high school, in addition to the guidelines below. If the committee chooses to name a high school entry as a finalist for the 12th annual contest, the play will be produced with the other finalists in our festival in June 2016.

Please read the following rules and requirements carefully. Plays not meeting the requirements will be disqualified.

Submission Guidelines
  • The play should be approximately ten-minutes in length.
  • The play must have no more than five on-stage (speaking and non-speaking) characters.
  • You may submit only one play, so send us your best! Please do not make more than one submission.
  • The play should be in a “play format” making it easy for the readers. (We like 12-point, easy to read fonts, such as Times New Roman or Arial)
  • The play must be unpublished and unproduced at the time of submission to our contest. We do screen for this, so don’t send us your play if it has been produced. (Staged readings are not counted as “produced.”)
  • Submitting your play to our contest grants Lakeshore Players the right to produce your play in our annual festival and photograph and/or videotape it for archival purposes, if it is chosen as a finalist.
Additional Guidelines
The play should have simple technical requirements. There won’t be a set — a few furniture pieces and a few props only — we only have about one minute in between plays to change scenes.
As a community theatre, we want to appeal to the largest possible audience, therefore plays with excessive offensive language are less likely to be selected – please keep that in consideration.

The 23rd International MiniFest

A juried showcase of the year’s best original one-act plays

The Acadia Theatre Company (ATC) is pleased to announce its 22nd annual MiniFest, to be held in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada March 31 - April 2, 2016.

Once a year, hundreds of the best plays from around the world are submitted for a juried evaluation. The best make it to the short list, from which the winning plays are chosen by the Executive Committee.

In addition, awards will be presented for Best Play, Best Director, Best Male/Female Character and Best Ensemble, as chosen by the audience.

General seating tickets are only available at the door. MiniFest is always a popular event, and our friends and patrons are advised to come early to avoid disappointment!

Rules and Guidelines

  1. Anyone can submit an original script, provided that it has not been professionally performed.
  2. Playwrights can only submit two (2) scripts in total each year.
  3. The running time of the script can be no longer than 30 minutes in length.
  4. The scripts selected will be chosen not only for their dramatic quality and writing, but also for their suitability for the actors (and numbers of actors) available in any year. As MiniFest is modestly funded, scripts will also be considered from the point of view of their production requirements.
  5. Scripts must be submitted electronically no later than midnight on November 15, 2015, AST. No late submissions will be accepted.
  6. Rehearsals start in the first week of March, 2016.
  7. MiniFest may choose to present as many as eight plays over two consecutive nights. Each evening of plays may be presented as many as three times.
  8. Successful playwrights will not be offered royalties.
  9. Script submissions will only be accepted after a correctly completed application has been received.

  1. Your script can only be submitted electronically in Word format.  If you do not have Microsoft Word, or program that will save as a Word document, you can download the free Open Office and save the file as a Word document No PDF or other formats will be accepted.
  2. You can only enter two (2) plays in the competition.
  3. The first page, the Covering Page of your script, include:
    1. the name of your play
    2. the playwright’s name
    3. the contact information of the playwright (address, telephone number & email address).
  4. On the second page, the Character Breakdown and Setting Page, include:
    1. the character breakdown in your script (e.g. Sally – a CEO.)
    2. the setting (e.g. An apartment in NYC.) that your play occurs.
    3. the Time (e.g. The present.)
  5. As the play goes to the jury anonymously, please make sure that the pages of the script following the Covering Page (including the Character Breakdown Page) do NOT contain your name.
  6. Please make sure the document editing features are unlocked or disabled. This to enable removal or manipulation of pages for jury and production purposes. No changes to the text itself will be made.
  7. Please make sure your actual script pages are numbered, and contain (header or footer) the name of your play.

ONSTAGE Festival

Little Black Dress INK is creating production opportunities for female playwrights through its Female Playwrights ONSTAGE Project; a short-play festival dedicated to producing peer-selected works by women. In addition to contributing to the selection of plays, participating playwrights are able to review and revise their work via online-streaming of play readings, and are encouraged to blog about the process along the way.

Submissions are now being accepted from awesome female playwrights for consideration in this year’s festival! This festival utilizes a peer-review process for evaluating submissions.

Please make sure to read over the following guidelines carefully before submitting. Incomplete submissions, or submissions that do not meet the following criteria will not be considered:
  • You must be a female playwright to enter the ONSTAGE Festival.
  • This year’s festival theme is Curves Ahead. Playwrights are invited to submit short plays and/or monologues written on this theme. In the past we’ve had great success with short scenelets as well (10-minute plays comprised of a couple of scenes, which we can sprinkle throughout the show)
  • LBDI strongly suggests you do not submit plays or monologues longer than ten minutes. Keep in mind that in all instances, shorter truly is better. Plays running longer than ten minutes stand very little chance of making it into the festival, as we strive to produce as many playwrights as possible.
  • Little Black Dress INK utilizes a peer review process for evaluating plays. By submitting to this fest, you agree to participate in this unique opportunity to help select plays for production.
  • Once our submission window is closed, you will receive a selection of plays to read and score using the LBDI online eval form. You MUST read and submit your evaluations by the required date in order for your play to remain in consideration.
  • Submitted works will be read by other participating playwrights and LBDI artistic personnel. By submitting to the festival, you agree to share your work for review in this process.

This will be a collaboration between playwright, directors, sound designer, and actors to create a horror adaptation of a fairytale by the Brothers Grimm. We are seeking a playwright that is interested in creating in the rehearsal room.

Nor’Eastern Play Writing Contest

This is the tenth year of premiered staged readings of three winning one-act plays in showcase at the Brick Box Theatre housed in the beautiful Paramount Theatre in downtown Rutland, Vermont. Vermont Actors’ Repertory Theatre is in its eleventh season. The Nor’Eastern Contest winners will receive an intense day and a half’s work on each play, and two evenings of Showcasing as well as three nights lodging. The Nor’Eastern Showcase rehearsal and performance dates for this year will be May 19, 20 & 21, 2016. First, each script goes through a rigorous screening process with panels of readers. The scripts with the highest scores are submitted to a second panel, and then the finalists are read by a single reader who selects the three scripts to be showcased.

This contest is open to playwrights of all ages and experience who are residents of Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey or Pennsylvania.

● One­ act plays must be readable in the s​howcase in 45​ minutes or less. Readers are instructed to disqualify​ plays that are, or appear to be, longer.

● Submissions must be original, unpublished, one­ act plays. Plays that have had staged readings or productions may be submitted, however, plays that have received Vermont productions or readings, or that have been published, may not.

● Legal clearance of materials not in the public domain is the full responsibility of the playwright.

Articulate Theatre Company is, for the first time, inviting submissions for our signature series, Articulating the Arts. The foundation of Articulating the Arts is deriving inspiration for plays from works of arts from other disciplines. Our Company members and guest artists review unique works of art to use as a springboard and source of inspiration for new theatrical works. The source this season is folk music of the 60s and 70s, specifically the songs listed below. You can read about our past AtAs, and see pictures, by following the links at this web page.

Articulating the Arts: Voice Of and For the People will be performed under a Theatre Authority contract for two performances - February 26th and 27th, 2016. No one in the production will receive any stipend or monetary compensation.

Theme and Submission Guidelines
This season’s plays for Articulating the Arts will be inspired by the folk songs of the sixties and seventies. Playwrights are encouraged to compose plays in reaction to the specific folk songs selected and shown on our webpage. Plays can be comedic, dramatic, surreal, historic, political, farce, etc. They can be pro-folk music, or against it, or both. A storyline based on the song’s artist is also welcome (some of these folk singers have incredible life stories!) Plays do not have to exactly represent the song, but there should be creative connective tissue between the song and the play. (e.g., just because there’s a tree in the lyrics doesn’t mean there has to be a tree in the play; but if the song is about a person’s love of pop-rocks, a play about the angst of filling pot holes for a living would be a stretch.)

  • New works based on the songs listed below, on this page. To see information about the songs and artists, visit this page. No pre-written plays, please.
  • Written with the Articulate acting ensemble in mind. The goal is to only cast from our membership, with few, if any, exceptions. This is a guideline, not a hard rule. You can view headshots and bios of the acting company on this page.
  • Play must be no more than 8 minutes long.
  • Ideally, plays will have between 2-4 characters, but this is a guideline not a restriction.
  • Plays should be in English, though submissions from playwrights outside of the U.S., and stories set in other lands are welcome
  • Sets and costumes should be minimal. These are the basic pieces of furniture we will use: bar, barstools, tables, chairs, bench. Plays with other furniture needs will be considered, but simple is best for all involved.
  • Musical scenes are welcome, but note that resources are slim for rehearsal and accompaniment.
  • Plays with extreme violence and/or nudity will not be considered.

  • Submissions must be sent as an attachment in PDF format only; no hard copy submissions will be accepted. Submissions must be formatted as follows: 
  • Email must contain the play's title, author's name, phone number, and email address. 
  • These are blind submissions: the playwright’s name cannot appear anywhere on the attached script, including the title page, header/footer areas, or within the text. 
  • The first page of the script must contain the title, list of characters, and basic setting information. 
  • The second page will be considered the first page of the script. The other pages of the play follow. 
  • Include the title and page numbers in the header of each page of the submission. - All submissions must be in a standard professional play format.
The Legal Stuff
By submitting an entry, you are affirming you are the sole creator of the play and entitled to confer performance rights. You further affirm that, if your play is chosen, you will grant performance rights, royalty-free, to Articulate Theatre Company for two performances on February 26th and 27th, 2015. The play remains the sole property of the playwright. Any future productions will be negotiated separately.

A committee of readers will evaluate the scripts and finalists will be notified by November 27th. We will not offer commentary and feedback on the scripts. There is no fee for submission.

WP Theater is looking for 15 female-identified playwrights, directors, and producers who crave an artistic home, professional support, and the resources to launch them into the next phase of their careers to join the 2016-2018 WP Lab.

Lab provides up to fifteen artists with community, a vital professional network, entrepreneurial and leadership training, free rehearsal space and, most significantly, tangible opportunities for the development and production of bold new work for the stage.

Must be a female-identified artist living within 90 minutes of Women’s Project Theater via car or rail.
Must be able to attend evening meetings at Women’s Project Theater twice each month for the duration of the two years, as well as other events throughout the year, such as master classes, retreats, observerships and other special events at WP.
Regular attendance is mandatory and therefore applicants should view the program as a two-year-long commitment.
Must be available for an in-person interview.

Participate in a monthly lab meeting led by Women’s Project Theater’s Artistic Staff
Participate in a bimonthly meeting of the five artists in their concentration led by a mentor in their field.
Participate in master classes led by established artists.

What kind of conflicts would make me ineligible?

We accept that every artist will wind up missing one or two meetings, but if you know now that you will be away for more than three weeks in total in during the lab dates, you should not apply. Applicants should view the program as a two-year-long commitment and we will only accept applicants who can take full advantage of the program.

I’m not available for an in-person interview—may I still apply?

If you are unavailable for an in-person interview or have a limited conflict in regards to attending biweekly meetings, please make note of such conflicts in your application. We will try to accommodate such situations on a case-by-case basis.

When will the monthly meetings be held?

We will work with the artists selected to find a time that works for the group, so you need not worry about this question at the application stage.

If I am selected for the group and then my eligibility status changes, would I be automatically suspended from the program?

No, we will handle this situation on a case-by-case basis. Please do not let such a concern keep you from applying.

What kind of resume should I submit?

Your resume should list all readings, workshops or productions. Your resume should also include any other relevant theater experience. We would be glad to see a resume detailing your education or other work experience, though this is not required. Please feel free to submit multiple resumes if you think that this would be helpful as we consider your application. As long as you have a resume that details your theatrical experience, you need not tailor a resume to this application process alone.

If I can’t decide between two plays or have an additional writing sample that I am very proud of, may I include more than one play with my application?

No, we only read one play per applicant, so please only submit one writing sample.

May I send in music along with the book of my musical?

Please do, and give credit to the composer and lyricist.

Is there an age limit? Are you looking for young writers?

No, there is no age limit and we would be glad to admit a talented artist of any age into the program?

Will you let me know that you received my application?

Call for Plays - Women Playwrights Series

The Centenary Stage Company, a Professional Equity Regional Theatre in residence on the campus of Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ is accepting submissions for the 2016 Women Playwrights Series (WPS) and the 2016 Susan Glaspell Contest.

Now in its 24th year, the WPS is a developmental program dedicated to providing a working forum for the unique and underserved voice of women writing for the theatre today. Each season three new plays are selected for a collaborative workshop process, with a professional director and actors, which takes place in a brief rehearsal period, over a period of a approximately 1 week, allowing time for the playwright to hear and adapt their work with other professionals. The process culminates in a presentation of the work for the public as part of the Series giving CSC audiences larger exposure to new work, as well as offering the playwright an opportunity to get feedback from the audience during the development process.

Playwrights selected for the workshop process will receive a $200 honorarium. Additional funds for travel and housing are available for one playwright each season.
The 2016 Susan Glaspell Contest:

One play from the WPS Festival will be selected by a panel of judges as the winner, to be featured in a subsequent CSC main-stage season as a full production, with an additional award of $1500 to the playwright.

Guidelines for WPS Susan Glaspell Contest:

Submit Full-length play, no more than ONE Non-Equity or workshop production.

(If play has had one production, please include information in your cover letter about the company, # of performances, and contract, if applicable)

Please include 1 letter of recommendation from a professional colleague or professor/instructor familiar with your work.

Seeking bold and dynamic plays that embrace the Red Theater aesthetic.
The competition winner will receive a staged public reading with the Red Theater Company in Chicago as well as with the collectives in Lincoln, Omaha, and Purchase NYC. The three runners up will also receive a staged reading of an excerpt of their play.


We are looking for rebellious work that asks dangerous questions.


As Red Theater Chicago is serious about producing new works from theatrical playwrights, RTC invokes an 18 month Right of First Refusal to produce the Chicago exclusive production of the winning script as defined by the date of the first public staged reading. Playwrights agree to receive $75 per performance in royalties for the duration of the run. Submission to this competition constitutes agreement with the above fine print, rules, and regulations.

1) As we have a huge number of submissions, any not following the guidelines will sadly be discarded.

2) Email subject lines must be in the format of PLAY TITLE, AUTHOR’S NAME.

The Ensemble Studio Theatre/Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Science & Technology Project is an initiative designed to stimulate artists to create credible and compelling work exploring the worlds of science and technology and to challenge the existing stereotypes of scientists and engineers in the popular imagination.

The partnership between the Ensemble Studio Theatre and The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation is the creative engine behind hundreds of new American plays that challenge and broaden the public’s understanding of science and technology and their impact in our lives. Plays from the EST/Sloan Project are produced again and again across the country. This begins at EST’s home base in Hell’s Kitchen, New York, for forty years a crucial platform for new and unheard voices in the American theatre. Over the past fifteen years, this reputation has been enhanced by the critically acclaimed productions presented on the theatre’s Mainstage every season under the banner of the EST/Sloan Project.

Beyond New York, the program now has a nationwide reach. It supports development and production of new plays in theatres across the country through a combination of seed grants and production incentives. These initiatives provide an extended life for EST/Sloan plays in subsequent regional productions, and the seed grants provide a broader base of artistic opportunity for communities outside of New York, allowing the program to cast a wider net for new work.

A few of us have been working on a new play based on interviews with the homeless, and we're looking for a few more playwrights to add to the mix.

A long-distance dramaturgy program for new plays in development. Works must be in the first draft stage or later, but as yet unproduced. We do not accept partial drafts or produced plays for this program, and any such submissions will be rejected. Each script will be paired with a professional dramaturge, who will work with the playwright via email and/or Skype through the completion of a further two drafts of their work.

All playwrights, regardless of experience or province/country of residence, are eligible to apply. Up to three scripts will be chosen for development in 2016. Please note that She Said Yes! is a feminist theatre company, and as such we are interested in developing works that are written by, for or about women, including queer and trans women and women of colour. While we do not stipulate that the playwright must be female, priority will be given to works which develop and enrich the canon of feminist theatre.

Submission deadline is October 31st, 2015, at 5 pm. Submissions must be emailed by this date in order to be considered.

Science and the Arts are intricately linked, as they both seek to answer the age-old questions of humanity. Many people see science as a debunker of myth, but in actuality science is as magical as imagination. What is more spectacular than the feats of Mother Nature, the beauty of the human body, or the alchemy of a lab? Strange Sun seeks full length plays that explore the interplay of science and art. Plays that explore specific people, theories, concepts, scientific methods of working are all exciting possibilities for submission.

Playwrights should submit a copy of their script IN PDF FORM. Please include a brief synopsis, cast list, workshop history (if any) and a short paragraph on what you would like to get out of an extended developmental process .

Urban Stages' EMERGING PLAYWRIGHT AWARD is presented to innovative playwrights whose works speak to the whole of society. Special attention is given to plays that touch on social issues. Submissions are accepted throughout the year (there is not a deadline) from around the United States and internationally.

However, special attention is given to those who live in or near New York.

Full-length plays only:
- scripts must be firmly bound
- No changes or revisions accepted after submission

With your submission, please include:
- Biography and/or author’s history of the play
- Character breakdown
- Brief synopsis of the play.
- A small SASE envelope for response letters. Whole plays will no longer be returned. All plays will be recycled.

Plays MAY HAVE BEEN developed elsewhere, BUT NEVER PRODUCED in New York City.

There is no limit to submission. Subject matter and character variations are open.

There is no submission fee.

It usually takes two to six months for us to read and process your script. We ask that you do not call or email our offices to inquire on the status of your play.

Plays from overseas and throughout the United States are accepted and considered. BUT special attention will be given to playwrights who live in or near New York.

There is no deadline for The Emerging Playwright Award.

However, there may be deadlines for plays under special consideration (for example Words by Women, 2-character, etc.). These deadlines will be announced. All submissions are eligible for The Emerging Playwright Award.

With the growing popularity of 10-minute plays over the past 20 years, it was only a matter of time (literally) before performers and audiences turned their attentions to even shorter theatrical works. Five-minute play festivals and competitions are popping up around the world. Student actors are forever looking for short works for classroom study, and these little theatrical nuggets provide unique challenges, such as quickly establishing character and emotional arcs.

So, we're gathering up a bunch of them--classic and contemporary examples of "conspicuously short" performance scripts. What's a five-minute play? Uptown Works seeks one-act plays

Uptown Works is excited to announce that they will be offering playwrights the opportunity to workshop One Act plays and present them in staged readings at:

Liberated, 1005 Columbus Avenue, New York, NY.

Sunday December 6th, 6pm
An evening of Staged Readings, directed by Daniela Hart (Former Resident Director at The Flea) and Amanda Black (SDC Foundation Observership Class '15-'16)

Produced by Uptown Works.

There will be opportunity for music and mingling after the readings.

We are currently accepting submissions for One Act plays that read within the 10-20 minute bracket.
There will be six hours of allocated rehearsal time for each script in the two weeks preceding the event. Playwrights will have the opportunity to assist in casting and develop script throughout the process.

We are now accepting submissions for Lama Theater Company’s Monthly Question! The Monthly Question is a reading series of new and bold writing (short plays/ Monologues/ poems/ Songs) around Lama’s monthly question that will be performed at The Kraine Theater, NYC.

Our Mission: Lama means WHY in Hebrew. The Lama Theater Company is a writer/director-driven company that continually raises questions and fearlessly searches for artistic exploration.

Important dates:

November 14th - playwrights/poets/song writers submission deadline!
November 16th - announcement of chosen works.
November 23rd - performance night at 8:30pm.

Casting the actors on the spot at 8:30pm, show at 9:30pm. Location: The Kraine Theater, NYC.

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church is seeking submissions of original, unproduced plays of any length

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church is seeking submissions of original, unproduced plays of any length for the second season of its Paul Enger Play Reading Series, which will be held the second Tuesday of each month starting October 13, 2015 and running through June 2016.

Submitted plays will be screened by a selection jury. If selected, playwrights will be notified by the Series Coordinator and given a scheduled date for the reading of their play. PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT IF YOU ARE UNAVAILABLE ON TUESDAY EVENINGS. Readings will begin at 7 pm and be held in Holy Trinity’s community room. Time permitting, playwrights will also be allowed an optional Q&A session with the audience following the reading for feedback and discussion about their works. Selected playwrights (and their actors) will have access to the space beginning at 4:30 pm the day of their scheduled performance.

Selected playwrights will be responsible for casting the actors for the reading, providing copies of their script for the actors, and complying with the existing rules and regulations of the Actors Equity Association Staged Reading Guidelines (for more on AEA guidelines, please visit their website: https://www.actorsequity.org/docs/codes/Stage_Reading_Guidelines.pdf). Holy Trinity will provide the space and seating with minimal set-up/tear-down of the staging area.

-a brief synopsis of your play

Submissions received after that date will not be considered. ELECTRONIC SUBMISSIONS ONLY PLEASE. A running time of 75 min or less is suggested but not mandatory. The selection jury is looking for works of various topics in order to present a diverse collection of plays over the course of the season so as to reflect the inclusive nature of Holy Trinity Church.

The mission of the Paul Enger Play Reading series is to honor the memory of Paul Enger, a beloved member of Holy Trinity and a prolific writer, and provide a venue for upcoming playwrights to have their plays read and workshopped in order to nurture artists in a manner reflective of Holy Trinity’s core values.

Eden Prairie Players Now Accepting One Act Submissions for 2016

Eden Prairie Players is accepting submissions of unpublished one act plays for its 2016 Collection of One Acts to be produced in September of 2016.

Please read the submission guidelines, then go to the One Acts Submission Form.

Submission Guidelines
  • We allow only one submission per playwright.
  • We are seeking unpublished one-act plays: dramas, comedies, etc. (previously-produced or stage readings OK)
  • Length 30 minutes or under (we typically select most in the 10-25 minute range)
  • The play must be submitted as a PDF file through our submission form. 
  • Submit through the online submission form:
  • Playwright contact information - name, email, address, phone.
  • Name of play.
  • Approximate duration.
  • List of characters / descriptions: age, gender, race, etc. (please list allowable variations) 
  • Short synopsis of the play, including a description of recommended set pieces and props
  • After the form is submitted, you will receive a confirmation email. 
  • Plays will be reviewed on a first come-first served basis. We limit consideration to an arbitrary number of plays, so submissions will be closed after we reach that limit.


Selected plays will be paid a royalty of $15 per performance (we usually have 5-7 performances).
No compensation for selection process: By submitting your play(s) for consideration, you give Eden Prairie Players permission to make copies as needed for the selection process. You also give permission for your play to be performed without payment at an unrehearsed table readings as part of the selection process.
