Several New York City artists, including Sarah Ruhl and Wesley Taylor, will lead workshops for theatre artists over the upcoming months to raise money for an upcoming Off-Broadway new work. 

NEW YORK (July 26, 2013) – Tony nominee SARAH RUHL and Smash's WESLEY TAYLOR lead a one-of-kind workshop series for theater artists of all kinds. Don't miss this rare opportunity to learn with some of the masters of the craft! All proceeds from every workshop will help fund the upcoming Off-Broadway play produced by Jeffrey Feola and Brian Patrick Murphy.

The Clearing, a new play by Jake Jeppson of Yale’s School of Drama, will get its New York City Premiere at Theater at St. Clements in New York City, directed by Drama Desk Award winner Josh Hecht. The Clearing tells the story of two brothers who climb to a clearing at the top of a gorge: a place to tell stories, to escape their dysfunctional mother, and to honor a buried family secret from their childhood nearly twenty years later. The sacredness of the clearing is challenged when one brother introduces his new lover to their lives. Jeppson’s multi-faceted characters weave a compelling story about a family trying to pick up the pieces after a mysterious event challenges their ties to one another.

Experiments in Quick Writing with Sarah Ruhl       
Friday August 2nd  5:00-7:30
Tony Award nominee Sarah Ruhl will lead a one-of-a-kind workshop in which playwrights will have an opportunity to do in-class writing - drawing on exercises used by automatic writers like Stein. She will also work with playwrights and explore how meditation might impact automatic writing.  Followed by a Q and A and a group discussion about process.  Playwrights will not be required to have pieces prepared.

Auditioning for Musical Theatre with Wesley Taylor
Monday August 12th 5:00-7:30
This Musical Theatre workshop, led by Smash's Wesley Taylor, will help performers rediscover their audition material.  Wesley will work with each artist individually on his or her audition material and will help find a new and fresh approach to something that’s been sung a million times.  Performers will be asked to prepare 32 bars of their favorite audition piece and get feedback from an actor’s perspective to rediscover the depth and meaning of the material.

Tools for Teaching Artists  with Kathleen Dorman         
Tuesday August 13th 5:00-8:00
Sharpen your skills as a teaching artist with the Director of Education at Off-Broadway's Award Winning Classic Stage Company (CSC), Kathleen Dorman. This workshop follows the same format as the training received by Columbia University MFA Acting candidates that are then employed as teaching artists with CSC's Young Company program. Students will explore theories of teaching and learning, gain a general overview of practical activities and techniques, and exchange and learn new drama games for the classroom while considering best practices. Kathleen will work with students on how to obtain teaching artist jobs and will end the class with a Q&A. Whether new to teaching or looking for a brush-up, this workshop will enhance the quality of your work in the classroom.

Devising Your Own Work with Josh Hecht

Drama Desk Award Winner Josh Hecht will lead a workshop where the focus will be making ensemble-generated, devised work.  Working quickly and collaboratively, the group will explore various techniques for generating material, and then break into small working groups to create highly theatrical compositions that can be the basis for full-scale pieces.  The workshop is open to all writers, directors and actors, to actors interested in writing, writers who are interested in acting, directors who want to generate their own material, people interested in multi-disciplinary work, and anyone interested in imaginative ways of telling stories.

Collaborative Leadership for Directors with Stephen Kaliski

Forget the popular belief that the director should be the center of attention. Or the ultimate authority. Or the smartest person in the room. When it comes to effective storytelling in the theater, the director is less often the puppeteer than the primary audience member, working with open ears, empathy, and a crafty sense-of-play to elicit the very best work from the production team. Join director and educator Stephen Kaliski (teacher of "Joy in the Performing Arts) for a liberating exploration of how a director can effectively collaborate instead of ineffectively control. Discover how you can lead a powerful production by taking the attention off of yourself and putting it on the brilliant artists and stories surrounding you.

Auditioning for Shakespeare with Craig Baldwin

This class, led by Red Bull Theater's Associate Artistic Director Craig Baldwin, will give you tools to deactivate your fears, and reactivate your classical monologue.  You will discover ways to stay present and centered in those high-pressure situations.  You will explore how the language can free you.  Along with general class work, each student will be given specific one-on-one opportunities. Students are asked to come prepared with a 3-minute classical monologue.

The Aurora Theatre Company’s Global Age Project (The GAP) is currently accepting submissions

There is a $20 submission fee that will be waived if you use the password (TodayGlobalNew) in their play submission form.

The Aurora Theatre Company’s Global Age Project (The GAP) is currently accepting submissions for the 2014 global age project new works series.

The GAP seeks plays that directly respond to issues in our present and possibilities of/for our future. The festival celebrates the diversity of perspectives, styles, voices, concerns, and stories that make up the world today. Plays need not be about science or technology. The GAP does not consider plays that are set in a historical time period, which the GAP define's as prior to the year 2000. We look for work that feels immediate, original, and accomplished.

We do not consider plays that are shorter than 45 minutes / 45 pages. Plays that have already received a professional production are not eligible. Only one submission per writer per year

Submissions will culminate in a four-week festival of staged readings in February of 2014. Four scripts will be selected with the potential of a full production the following season. New York based Playwright Jorge Ignacio Cortinas remarks, "If every development process was run with the sensitivity and courage that the GAP Festival so effortlessly demonstrated, the American theater would be more vibrant, braver, more surprising, more relevant."

The festival takes place in February 2014, and the deadline for submission is July 31st, 2013. Submissions can be made beginning June 3rd. Four playwrights will be chosen to receive a $1,000 award, a public reading of their work on our main stage, as well as travel and housing. Thespian Production is seeking plays for its October 2013 "Theater Madness" festival in NYC.

Scripts need to be 10-15 minutes in length with no nudity and minimal vulgar language. Plays can be any genre.

Thespian Production is also seeking plays that deal with the issue of domestic violence awareness and plays should be no longer than 12 minutes.  Our domestic violence showcase will also be in October 2013.

MTWorks’ FIRE-WORKS is our 10-15min short play competition featuring works that challenge our perception of current events that have us fired-up! For our upcoming season we are looking for plays that deal with the subject of GUN CONTROL.

The winning playwrights will be presented at our FIRE-WORKS benefit event performed by MTWorkers (We recommend using them as inspiration). FIRE-WORKS are fully staged (not a reading).


We are currently interested in 10-15 min short plays.

Applicants must submit the following:

  • A full copy of your play in word or pdf format.
  • Synopsis.
  • Plays must be inspired by the subject of GUN CONTROL
  • Please get to know our MTWorkers and use them as a source of inspiration. If selected they are the ones who will be performing your play.
  • If you applied for FIRE-WORKS before, you must submit a different play.
  • You can only submit one play per year per program (it is OK to submit one play to FIRE-WORKS and one play to the National NewBorn Festival the same year).
  • We are interested in plays that have not been produced in NY (Readings OK).

WildClaw is currently accepting horror radio plays for its fifth annual DEATHSCRIBE Radio Play Festival.

We are looking for 10-minute radio scripts that are genuinely scary, imaginative, chilling, intelligent, suspenseful, horrific or downright grotesque. We put no restrictions on contestants as to content or tone, but keep in mind that we are a Horror Theatre. We take our horror seriously, and so should you.

For adaptations, the source material must be in the public domain, or the author must secure the rights for a stage adaptation prior to submission to WildClaw.

Submission rules:
Scripts must be ready to produce - all sound and music cues included. Details on format can be found below. Please be aware that these scripts, if chosen, will be performed by no more than 6 actors, therefore if you have more characters it will require double casting by the director of the piece.

5 scripts will be selected from all submissions. After being selected, there will be an opportunity for the authors to refine, revise, and tighten these scripts (if deemed necessary) in collaboration with WildClaw Theatre Company.

These scripts will be rehearsed and presented as an evening of Live Radio Drama with foley sound at the Mayne Stage in Chicago's Rogers Park and recorded for a future WildClaw Blood Radio Podcast.

Deadline for submissions is midnight, August 15, 2013.

Deathscribe selections will be “blind.” The title page should include the title of the script, names of all authors, and the address, phone/fax and email address of the author(s). The subsequent pages must include only the manuscript title and page number and NO identifying personal information (name, address, email, etc.) or it will be disqualified.

There will be a “Best of the Fest” award, with the winner chosen by a celebrity panel of judges on the night of performance.

By submitting to WildClaw’s Deathscribe Radio Horror Festival, you are stating that the script is your own work and has not been produced or commissioned for pay by other theatre groups. Plays which have been produced professionally are not eligible. Audio plays that have received college/university productions only will be accepted.

By submitting your play and upon acceptance to WildClaw’s Deathscribe Radio Horror Festival, you are granting WildClaw the exclusive, non-binding rights to make copies of your work in all media - including print, digital, film, video, audio, or other Internet formats - used to promote the Festival. WildClaw Theatre will have the right to produce the selected scripts for the WildClaw Theatre Deathscribe Horror Radio Festival, including broadcast and/or webcast of the festival; however, WildClaw Theatre makes no commitment to produce any script. The author retains all other rights to his or her work.

Instructions to Submit

To submit electronically, please make sure your script is formatted correctly according to the guidelines (see below) and submit your script as an attachment to deathscribe2013@gmail.com.


• Scripts must be no more than TEN MINUTES in length. This includes all sound effects, transitions and dialogue. The ENTIRE performance should only last 10 minutes. (And preferably no shorter than 7 minutes. Please read it aloud at home before submitting to check the running time.)

• Writers may submit up to two (2) scripts for Deathscribe consideration in any year. Submit three or more, and the Literary Legion will be very, very angry, and will choose which two they wish to read arbitrarily.

• PDF format is strongly preferred. If you don't have PDF, then only MS Word please. All scripts must have a title page with all contact information, but no identifying information should appear anywhere else in the document. Submissions must be in a standard font and no less than 12 point.

• NO SCREENPLAYS. SCREENPLAYS WILL BE DISCARDED. WE KNOW THEM WHEN WE SEE THEM. (Nothing against screenplays. But this is a radio play festival.)

WildClaw Theatre produces original horror plays as well as stage adaptations of horror literature and media.

Our definition of horror is fairly broad, however do keep in mind that we are a HORROR THEATRE, and to that end we are largely uninterested in genre parodies, horror-comedy, or works that are excessively tongue-in-cheek or campy. Vital to our mission is to produce genuinely frightening, imaginative, intelligent, and literate works of horror for the stage.

In other words: We take our horror seriously (and you should too).

WildClaw Theatre is currently accepting full-length horror plays. The NJPC in residence at William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ announces the second call for the Eleventh Annual Contest – Play Series (open to New Jersey residents only) and the Musical Series (open to residents of NJ and the surrounding areas including NYC). 

The contest consists of two phases.

First, three plays and three musicals will be selected as finalists and receive staged-readings from all entries received by Aug. 8, 2013. 

(Each finalist receives a small honorarium.)

Second, one winner in each series will receive a fully staged production in the very flexible Hunziker Black Box Theatre. In addition to the full production, the winners receive an additional small honorarium. Initial entries should include: a cover letter, stating availability of the author for participation in the process and the performance history of the play; a one-page synopsis of the play with character descriptions and vocal requirements; and a resume of the playwright.


This contest is open to residents in the Northern NJ, tri-state region.

Submissions should include:

SABOTAGE by Brian Cox is the second of four monologues selected for the NYCPlaywrights June 2013 Play of the Month to be recorded.

Brian on the inspiration for this monologue:
Detroit has a long history of racial tension with the surrounding suburbs. The idea of a guy employing stereotypes held by some white suburbanites as a way to sabotage his partner’s plans to move out of the city struck me as a fine satirical setup for highlighting the absurdities.

Tongue in Cheek Theater Productions is seeking solo shows

Tongue in Cheek Theater Productions (Ms. Jake Lipman, Producing Artistic Director) is seeking original solo shows for the Fall 2013 Plus 1 Solo Show Festival.

Series A of the Festival will be on Sunday, October 20 and Monday, October 21, 2013. Series B will be on Sunday, October 27 and Monday, October 28, 2013. All performances will begin at 8 pm at the Bridge Theatre @ Shelter Studios.

Tongue in Cheek's mission is to produce comedies that make its audiences think. We are seeking funny, thoughtful pieces that are 15 minutes or shorter and have minimal production needs. Preference may be given to premieres or shows that have had very few prior performances.

Submission guidelines:
+ The solo show must be an original, unpublished piece for which the submitting applicant has the rights to perform
+ The writer is also the performer
+ A running time of fifteen minutes or shorter
+ Minimal production needs (we will provide a chair, and simple lights up and down. No sound cues, really and truly)
+ If the performer is a member of AEA, s/he must secure permission directly from AEA to participate. This is not an AEA showcase.

The Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company (BETC) 2013-14 Generations new play competition

The Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company (BETC) announces our 2013-14 Generations new play competition, supported by a generous grant from the Sustainable Arts Foundation.

In order to support the work of parent playwrights, we are seeking full-length plays, for a cast of seven actors or less, written by a parent with at least one child under 18 years of age as of 7/31/2013.

The winning playwright will receive
• a week-long workshop residency in Boulder, Colorado, with daily rehearsals, culminating in a staged reading of the selected script;
• the chance to rewrite and revise during the week as part of the script development experience;
• a stipend for travel and lodging;
• a $250 prize; and
• a $250 childcare stipend to defray the costs associated with childcare during the residency.

During the residency, the selected play will be rehearsed with a cast of professional actors, director, and dramaturg. The week will culminate in a public reading. The selected work will be considered for full production in a future BETC season.
The selected playwright must be available for residency in Boulder, Colorado during the week of May 18-25, 2014. Specific residency details will be negotiated directly with the winning playwright.

Plays must be written in the English language. Plays that have been produced by Equity or professional companies or that have been published are not eligible. Plays that have had a workshop, reading, or non-professional production or that have been published as an actor's edition will be considered. Plays may not be under option or scheduled for professional production or publication as of July 31, 2013.

To have your work considered, please submit the following, by email, as one Word or PDF file, to submissions@betc.org:
1. Cover sheet with contact information: name, phone, email, mailing address, and a paragraph bio for yourself and any other collaborators; please do not include your name elsewhere in the submission file.
2. A brief synopsis of piece (500 words or less)

Can “happily ever after” involve something other than a monogamous couple? Do you have a great modern relationship story? We want to hear your story and share it with the world!

Modern relationships can look very different from two people in an exclusive relationship. The lives and loves of people in polyamorous/polyfidelitous, queer, kinky and others are defined by an intentional journey of self-discovery between consenting adults, where honesty and open communication are the main currency in relationships, not sexual or emotional exclusivity.

Open Love NY works with our 1,000-plus membership to educate the public about the existence and merits of responsible relationship choices between consenting adults. Open Love NY is sponsoring the Unchained Love Playwriting Competition to create original theatrical works that explore a world where lasting happiness can include more than just monogamy.

Plays exploring this theme should acknowledge the existence of modern relationship choices and can involve any topic viewed through a lens where those choices exist.

1. The competition is open to any playwright, and there is no limit to the number of entries submitted by a single playwright. There is no entry fee.

2. Entries must be original plays or musicals. They also may be co-authored, based upon factual material or an adaptation. The applicant must be the owner and controller of the copyright. The legal clearance of materials not in the public domain is the full responsibility of the playwright.

3. Works previously produced or published or entered in prior competitions are ineligible.

4. No revisions will be accepted once a script has been submitted.

5. No written or oral critique will be given on plays submitted.

6. Entries may be submitted starting July 1, 2013 and must be received no later than December 15, 2013 to be considered.

7. There are separate categories for full-length plays and one-act plays. One winning full-length play will receive a cash prize of $750. One winning play in the one-act category will receive a cash prize of $250. Winning plays will be announced in February 2014. Winning plays and others chosen for honorable mention will be featured in a public reading in March or April 2014. Winning plays will be shopped to various theater companies to secure a staged reading/workshop and eventual full production, although production is not guaranteed.

8. Open Love NY reserves the right to accept or reject any play entered in the contest.

9. Works that are deemed by the judging panel to foment homo-, bi- or transphobia, misogyny/misandry, rape culture, or hatred toward specific groups of people will be rejected. Playwrights are also encouraged to think beyond cisgender/heteronormativity and binary gender, although this is not a requirement.

10. Scripts must be submitted electronically either in PDF or Microsoft Word format. A synopsis of the play (100-word limit) and author’s bio (100-word limit) must also be submitted, both in Word format.

The Electro magnetic Theater seeks scripts

The Electromagnetic Theater is a podcast series that updates the tradition of “theater of the mind” radio drama for a modern audience. Each episode is an original short play, performed by a stock company of professional New York stage and voice actors, accompanied by immersive music and sound effects. The six episodes comprising

Season One are being released between July 1st and August 6th, 2013 on our website – electromagnetictheater.com – on iTunes and and on social media including Soundcloud and Facebook.

One of the most important elements of this project is a collection of original scripts contributed by an exceptional team of writers. We are currently seeking submissions for a second season of between eight and twelve episodes, to be released in the fall of 2013.

General Submission Guidelines:
§ Submissions for Season Two must be received no later than Friday, August 16th, 2013 
§ All stories must be original – no adaptations of work by other authors.  
§ Submitted plays and their underlying storylines must be exclusive to The Electromagnetic Theater, and may only be submitted for production by other companies in any format and for any media if they are not accepted for production as a part this series. 
§ Our editorial staff will likely suggest revisions to accepted scripts make them air ready. We want very much for the editorial process to be collaborative, but last minute changes may be made without consultation with the authors as we record and edit each piece for broadcast.  
§ The EmT is, for the time being, a labor of love for everyone involved, and none of  the production team, writers, or performers are being compensated for their participation.
Submission Format:

  • Each story must run between 8 and 20 minutes of total airtime.
  • Please use no more than six characters with significant spoken dialogue per piece, though crowd noises, and short interjections from “extras” can bring the total higher.
  • Each story needs to begin with a very short introduction, to be read by the series host, that sets the scene – for example: “Our story begins on a country road, fifty miles north of Topeka, Kansas. A lone man is hitchhiking in the hot sun.” – there is then no further narration, the rest being told through dialogue, sound effects, and music. 
  • Please give specific, but brief, descriptions of the effects and music you feel are needed as they occur in your piece.
  • Each submission must be a .doc, .docx, or .pdf in 12-point “Courier” font (or similar), laid out in the following manner:

Style Guide:

  • We’re looking for dramatically rich stories that make the best use of the audioonly medium. We’ll favor submissions with these elements: 

o Interesting character arcs. Stories where the protagonist’s worldview  significantly develops over the course of the piece.
o High stakes. We’re witnessing an event of crucial importance in the lives
of these characters.
o Engaging use of place and time – particularly when it gives our sound
designers interesting aural possibilities.
o Witty, well-observed dialogue. Characters who speak like real people,
but also like real people you’d be interested to know.

  • We love genre fiction, and there are a whole bunch of genres we haven’t had the chance to explore: Science Fiction, Historical Fiction, Courtroom Drama, Western, Police Procedural, and many more… give it a shot!
  • Pop-culture reference non sequiturs are boring. Yeah, we saw that movie too. So what?
  • Fiction means fiction. Strongly avoid including real, living people. 
  • Each story should stand alone. We’re not necessarily against the idea of bringing a particularly terrific character back in the future, but don’t send us something that depends on it. 
  • No profanity. George Carlin’s “seven words you can’t say on television” are out, as are class-A racial slurs and any graphic terms for sexual acts. When in doubt, err on the side of caution. 
  • No graphic sex or violence. Romance and action are encouraged, but keep it PG-13 rated.

First Laugh (The First Time Ever Annual Yearly Festival of LOL New One-Act Plays Ever In Life)

Join Piccolo Theatre this February for its inaugural festival of one-act plays.  First Laugh premieres the original work of local playwrights, and joins comedy writing and performance to answer the question, “What was your first laugh?”  This juried festival will feature a fantastic prize awarded to the audience favorite.  Two nights a weekend for two weekends, explore the unique origins of what people find funny.

Run February 7-8, and 14-15

All performances are Fridays & Saturdays at 8 PM

Athena Festival - Plays in Progress

Deadline for 2014 Festival is August 1, 2013

Athena Project is proud to announce the call for submissions for its Plays in Progress Series (PIP Series).  This Series will take place in Denver at The Aurora Fox Studio Theatre over the course of 3 long weekends, March 14-30, 2014, as part of a larger arts festival celebrating the Voices of Women Artists, including the World Premiere of Government Issued Long Johns by Erin Wagoner, winner of this year’s PIP Series.

Four new plays will be selected based on a blind submission process and given a dramaturg, director, cast and workshop level production during the Festival.  One play from the PIP Series 2014 will win a full production in March of 2015 based on a combination of a panel of judges and audience vote.  Scripts are being accepted from now until midnight, August 1, 2013.

Submission Guidelines are as follows:

1.  Playwright must be female and may only submit ONE full-length script.
2.  The play must not have ever had a fully mounted production.  Prior workshop presentations are okay, but the script must be a new version since the time of the workshop.
3.  Submission must include:

Full copy of script (without playwright contact info*)
Character breakdown (without playwright contact info*)
Short synopsis of script (300 word limit, without playwright contact info*)
Cover letter addressing what the playwright would like to accomplish with the workshop presentation and how she heard about the call for submissions

4. Plays submitted without all supporting materials included will be disqualified.
5. We recommend the playwright be able to travel to the area for rehearsals as needed if selected, and for at least one workshop production performance at their own expense. We will select 4 playwrights to participate in the PIP Series and hope to strike a balance between local and national work.  Exact rehearsal and performance schedules will be worked out with the director, dramaturg, and playwright after all plays are selected.

*Contact info must be listed ONLY on resume and cover letter, not on script or any other documents (submissions will be read blind).  All documents should include the Title of the Play, but no playwright contact information.

Directors and Dramaturgs will be selected in November 2013
Rehearsals will begin in January 2014

NYCPlaywrights June 2013 Play of the Month: SIOBHAN by Terry Boyle

SIOBHAN by Terry Boyle is the first of four monologues selected for the NYCPlaywrights June 2013 Play of the Month to be recorded.

Terry says about the monologue:

The era of the mobile phone has moved eavesdropping to a new level.  On the train, the bus, in the park we get little insights into people's lives as they pass with phone in hand.  A simple conversation can reveal so much, and you never know who might be listening in.

August Wilson New Play Initiative Congo Square Theatre Company Submission Guidelines

Congo Square Theatre Company is an ensemble dedicated to producing definitive and transformative theatre spawned from the African Diaspora as well as from other world cultures. Congo Square Theatre Company seeks to establish itself as an institution of multicultural theatre.

We are interested in full-length plays, translations, adaptations, musicals and performance art. We will consider productions of previously produced plays.

We do not accept unsolicited scripts for consideration for our seasons. Plays maybe submitted through a literary agent or accompanied by a letter of recommendation from a theater professional (i.e. an artistic director or literary manager at a professional theater). If neither applies, write a letter of inquiry including a brief synopsis, cast list, relevant production history, and 10-15 pages of sample dialogue. The company may then request a complete script.
