Heartland Theatre Company 2009 10-MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL

2009 10-MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL
PLAY WRITING COMPETITION TO COLLECT ORIGINAL SHORT PLAYS FOR 10-MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL

Heartland Theatre Company is seeking eight short original plays to be considered for production in June of 2009 for our 7th annual 10-minute play festival. Last year’s plays focused on the theme "Coffee Shop." This year, the theme is “It’s Over!” The competition is open to all playwrights wishing to participate. Eight plays will be selected and performed from among all the submissions.

Learn more about Heartland Theatre Company's Performance Space.

Guidelines -

1. Stick with the theme: It's Over
2. Stick with the scenic limitations.
3. We prefer submissions by email. If you submit hard copy, please include a $25 entry fee to cover administrative and photocopying costs.
4. Please use no more than four characters, and no fewer than 2.
5. Characters should be within the 18-70 age range.
6. Your play should mainly consist of dialogue. Ten-minute monologues will not be considered.
7. No plays previously submitted to Heartland Theatre Company, no children's plays, no musicals, and no previously staged productions will be considered. In this context, “previously staged” means any production for which tickets were sold and admittance charged.
8. If your play cannot be considered for any reason (see items 4-7, etc.) you will be notified as soon as the problem is discovered. No entry fees will be refunded.
9. Please include a title page including your name, address, phone number and email address. Do not put your name on the play itself as plays are judged blind. Your title should appear on each page of the play.
10. Plays will be videotaped for archival purposes
11. No contracts beyond the guidelines mentioned here will be offered.
12. All applicants must complete and submit the Heartland Theatre 10-Minute Play Festival Entry Form. If you are sending your submission by regular mail, please complete the entry form on-line and print it to include with your entry.
13. No scripts will be returned
14. Only one entry per playwright, please.
15. Keep it TEN MINUTES long and in English.
16. Keep in mind the physical space at Heartland.
17. Remember something has to happen in those ten minutes.
18. MAKE IT GOOD!

We much prefer you attach your script in MS Word format in an email to playfest@heartlandtheatre.org or mail one hard copy to

Heartland Theatre Company
P. O. Box 1833
Bloomington, IL 61702
(Attention: Play Fest 2009)

We'll also need a brief summary or "blurb" of your play to help our readers as well as provide a guide for auditions and advertising if your play is produced. Please include this summary -- one paragraph, no more than 50 words -- after your cover page but before your script.

Deadline for entries February 1, 2009. Winners will be posted on the Heartland website by April 15, 2009.

For more information call Heartland's Box Office at 309/452-8709 or playfest@heartlandtheatre.org

Scenic Limitations:

2 tables and 8 chairs
Description of Heartland Theatre Company's Performance Space

Our intimate theatre is vital and immediate to all 90 spectators. We've effective sound resources, and adequate lighting. There is no off-stage wing space, and we find the most successful staging is designed to accommodate a three-quarter house. We do use four entrances in our presentations, two upstage openings, and two vomitoria that come from both sides of the center section of the audience. There is not a working fly gallery in our theatre, and the audience is terraced upwards so they are looking down on our presentations.

Ten-minute plays are performed in groups of four plays before intermission with a separate curtain call for those involved in those plays, and four plays following intermission. Ideally we'd find elements of all four plays at work on the stage from the beginning of the performance and move effortlessly from one play to the next with a minimum of re-arranging of properties and furniture. In an ideal world all necessary scene changes would transpire only during intermission. Exceptions to this are sure to arise, but by keeping your scenic requirements simple you are giving yourself an advantage

DOWNTOWN URBAN THEATER FESTIVAL

NOW ACCEPTING NEW WORKS

The Downtown Urban Theater Festival (DUTF) returns for its seventh season to accept new works from playwrights. Below are submission details.

For DUTF 2009, the staff will accept 12 theatrical works; six full-length productions (60-90 minutes) and six shorts (30-45 minutes). Each work is performed only once during the festival. Biographies of actors, director, and crew, if available
Description of stage set (if any) and production needs (i.e. sound and lighting)

Every other year, Theatre UAB seeks new and original plays confronting racial or ethnic issues, especially those calling for ethnically diverse and/or multi-racial casting. We are especially interested in full-length dramas or comedies that could be produced as part of our regular season (that is, that could be performed by a diverse and talented group of college students).

* 2005 Winner: The Poetry of Pizza by Deborah Brevoort
* 2007 Winner: Valu-Mart by Sean O'Leary

All manuscripts should be submitted to this address:

The Ruby Lloyd Apsey Play Search
Theatre UAB ASC 255

Birmingham AL 35294-1263

The Apsey Award is a $1000 prize plus a staged reading at Theatre UAB and the possibility of a fully-mounted production. Previously-produced and unproduced scripts are equally welcome.

This is a biennial contest. The next submission period will begin September 1, 2008 and end on December 5th, 2008.

We prefer hard-copy submissions, but we do accept electronic submissions as well. Send your script as a PDF or Word file -- to us via the address leeshack@uab.edu -- and please consolidate your entire submission (title page with full contact information, synopsis, character and scene list, and complete script) into ONE FILE ONLY. 4th STAGE Script Competition Submission Guidelines

1. Submitted plays must explore scientific and/or technological stories, themes, issues and/or events. Science and technology must figure prominently in the script, whether in form or content or both. Biographical dramas, history plays, and medical dramas are discouraged unless they significantly employ science and/or technology. Authors are strongly urged to avoid the stereotypes often assigned to science, technology, and those who engage in these disciplines. This competition is not open to plays written in the genre of science fiction.

2. All entries must be postmarked on or before December 15, 2009.

Important Note to Entrants: New guidelines and our next deadline have been posted so that you may know the requirements and begin to prepare your entries in advance, but please note that we will not accept scripts until after June 15, 2009. On June 15, the Entry Form on this site will become active and submissions will be accepted. Any entries submitted before June 15, 2009, and without submission of both an online Entry Form and a printed and signed hard copy of an Entry Form, will be disqualified.

3. Specific eligibility requirements:

1. All plays must be original, full-length (minimum running time: 70 minutes), and submitted in English.
2. Plays that have been published or reviewed, or that have begun (i.e., first rehearsal) or received a professional production prior to the submission deadline, are not eligible. Plays that have had readings or a workshop are acceptable.
3. Plays or theatre pieces incorporating multi-media are eligible and encouraged, as is material presented in a new form or not entirely script-based. To enable adequate evaluation in these cases, authors must submit a detailed artistic statement that describes such elements in a clear and understandable manner. Those working with/in multi-media/new forms must also submit samples of the visual/aural interpretation of the piece, e.g., sketches, slides, DVD, CD, or the like.
4. Original material based on an existing published work or the like may be submitted if the author(s):
1. are the owners of the existing published work, or
2. have written permission from the author and owner of the existing published work to adapt this work for the stage and a copy of this written permission accompanies the submission of the play and all supporting materials. Any adaptations that do not fulfill these requirements are not eligible.
5. Authors may submit only one script per contest cycle.
6. Scripts submitted in a previous contest cycle may be resubmitted only if:
1. they have been significantly re-written, i.e., more than 50% of the script must be substantially changed from the previous submission, and
2. they have been submitted only once before. No script may be resubmitted a third time.
7. No musicals, translations or screenplays are being accepted at this time.
8. Those involved in any aspect of the STAGE Script Competition application or review process are not eligible to enter.
4. To assist the STAGE Competition in ongoing fund-raising efforts - and to thereby assist future artists - we ask the winning author(s) to credit, accompanied by respective logos, on the title page of all printed materials of future readings, workshops, productions, programs and publications of the winning piece, as follows: "Developed with the Assistance of the Professional Artists Lab, the California NanoSystems Institute, and the STAGE Project."
5. The winning play will be announced on this website in July, 2010. The winning author will be notified directly, prior to public notification.
6. Scripts will be judged by an esteemed panel of jurors. For a list of past and present judges, please click here.
7. All submissions must include:

Utah Shakespearean Festival's New American Playwright's Project

Submitting Your Script
To submit your script for consideration in the New American Playwrights Project, follow the guidelines below:

The Utah Shakespearean Festival's New American Playwright's Project is devoted to discovering and encouraging American playwrights, established and emerging, who write dramatic works that explore our American experience, spirit, and heritage, with special emphasis given to Western playwrights, themes, and characters.

The new scripts selected will be given three rehearsed staged readings with the Festival professional actors and directors before an audience, allowing feedback for the playwright's further development of the script.

The project is an advocate for American playwrights regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, physical disabilty, sexual orientation, or economic status. All American playwrights are welcome.

In addition to presenting staged readings of the selected scripts, every season the project will be committed to presenting a world premiere production of one of the selected scripts. A new play festival is planned for future Utah Shakespearean Festival seasons.

1. All entries for the 2009 season must be received between July 1 and December 1, 2008.

2. Only one submission per playwright per year is allowed.

3. The cast size must be no more than eight actors; submit a doubling plan if your script has more than eight characters.

4. The following must be submitted with each script: a cover page with the title and playwright's name only, bound into the script; a one paragraph biography of the playwright; a brief synopsis (two paragraphs maximum) of the play; a self-addressed-stamped envelope if acknowledgement of receipt is desired.

5. Plays should be original, un-produced, full-length, bound scripts that are finished enough to profit from a workshop reading by professional actors but still open to revision. We do not accept synopses, musicals, screenplays, collaborations, one acts, translations, adaptations, children's theatre, or plays by multiple authors.

6. Scripts may not exceed two-hour performance time or no more than ninety pages of dialogue.

7. The Festival is especially interested in material that explores characters and ideas that focus on our Western experience, spirit, and heritage. We will also accept scripts that focus on "classic" characters, subjects, and themes such as Shakespeare and other figures of historical, literary, or artistic significance.

8. After we receive scripts, they will be forwarded to our play selection committee. All authors will be notifed after March 15, 2009 regarding the status of their plays.

9. Scripts will not be returned.

10. The New American Playwrights Project consists of play readings only. Your manuscript, if selected, will receive a full staged reading with the Festival performing company.

11. If your script is selected, you must be willing to provide that in all subsequent productions the Utah Shakespearean Festival receives credit in all programs and publicity material. The appropriate format would read: "Original reading by the Utah Shakespearean Festival, Cedar City, Utah."

12. If your script is selected, you must be able to be in residence at the Festival for one week of rehearsal and performance in August. The Festival will provide transportation, lodging, and complimentary tickets to each of the summer season productions presented during your stay.

All scripts should be submitted to:
Charles L. Metten
Director, New American Playwrights Project
Utah Shakespearean Festival
351 West Center Street
Cedar City, UT 84720

FutureFest

Dayton Playhouse is proud to be the home of FutureFest.

FutureFest is the one-of-a-kind nationally renowned festival of new works. FutureFest was developed, in 1991, out of the need to introduce new works into the American theatre and at the same time provide playwrights the rare opportunity to see their works produced and professionally adjudicated during the early stages of development. This feedback is invaluable for the creative process and assists in advancing the script to the next level. Peter Filichia, New York Theatre "A" Critic and columnist from The New Jersey Star Ledger and theatremania.com called FutureFest "The best deal around for budding playwrights."

Each year, over 400 original scripts are submitted into the festival from playwrights across the country. A diverse committee of 25 volunteers begins the process of reading each script. To guarantee a variety of opinions and lively discussions, each script is read a minimum of three times before it can be submitted for further consideration or disqualified. This process lasts from September - February and during this time the committee narrows the entries down to 18 semi-finalists. The 18 semi-finalists are then submitted to a final reading committee of 9 to read and choose the six finalists.

The format for FutureFest consists of six original never before produced scripts that will be presented over one weekend. Three of the scripts will be fully staged and three scripts will be staged reading. This is done to make the change over after each show possible. Following each production, the adjudicators evaluate the script on five different topics: Idea/Dramatic Concept, Plot/Story Development, Character/Dialogue Development, Page to Stage, and Theatrical Life. The final adjudicator gives a general wrap-up of the script including audience reaction. Following the adjudication, the audience is given the opportunity to provide their opinions and ask questions regarding the script. David Van Fleck, playwright and author of FutureFest 2000 winner "Four Beers' credits Dayton Playhouse for launching the script to an off-Broadway debut in October 2003.

Nationally, FutureFest will continue to place Dayton on the map for new works and at the same time introduce six new scripts into the American theatre. Since 1991, 21 playwrights have emerged out of FutureFest to see their script published and produced across the country. Dayton Playhouse is given credit as the scripts premiere production. The importance of FutureFest to a playwright is evident by the increase of submissions revived each year and the prestige garnered by being a finalist.

Helen Sneed, an adjudicator for 15 years and recently named one of the 50 most influential people in American theatre says it best, " For a community theatre to do this is supposed to be impossible, but Dayton Playhouse manages to do it and does it right!"

Seeking Submissions Original Musicals for Teenagers

Kidz Theater is dedicated to helping young performers to reach their professional performing arts goals by providing performance opportunities in Manhattan. We work with professional or professionally minded children ages 7-19.

Frustrated by the limited and overdone choices available in the current musical theater lexicon, we are searching for up and coming writers to submit original musicals. We are especially looking for musicals that have creative set and costume opportunities. Kidz Theater is free for children to perform in and so our budget for sets and costumes is small. We are looking for smart, creative and challenging material that is suitable for teenagers and children.

It is a plus if you can provide an accompaniment CD for performance, and we especially like contemporary music, however, we will look at all styles and will consider hiring a band.

If your musical is chosen, we will produce your musical in Manhattan. Musicals will get a 2 week run at an Off-Broadway or 99 Seat Off-Off Broadway theater. Most of our performers have professional (even Broadway!) experience, and our productions always have a very professional edge. In addition to a fully produced production, you will also get $1.00 per ticket sold (we generally sell 600-1100 tickets per run).

Kidz Theater does 3-4 productions per year, so production times may vary depending on availability.

Please submit scripts through Email at Kidztheater@aol.com (only if you are able to Email music clips or send a website with music clips) or you can mail submissions with music clips on CD to Kristen Caesar, Artistic Director, 610 W. 164th St., Apt. 6, New York, NY 10032.

* Plays that have something interesting to show or say
* Plays that have good, non-traditional roles for female actors, not just the standard wife/girlfriend/foil-for-a-man roles
* Plays that have characters that are not one-dimensional or stereotypical.
* Plays - ten-minute plays, at least, with no more than four characters. We may still choose your play with more than four characters, but actors may play double roles during the reading.

article by playwright Theresa Rebeck on Broadway's glass ceiling

There's some feeling in rehearsal halls and writers' retreats and drunken dinner parties, that maybe the American theatre participates rather too enthusiastically in the supposed gender bias that the American media tosses about willy-nilly while discussing candidates for higher office. Mostly it is women playwrights who feel that way; male playwrights think the system is really, really fair and that women playwrights who raise these questions are whiners or dirty feminists. After all, everyone is discriminated against! It's show business! Nobody's happy! We're all narcissistic egomaniacs, you can't expect it to make sense! This is about the work. Which means, apparently, that any woman who cares enough to raise her voice about the fact that women's stories are not reaching the stages for which they are intended is a whiner, a dirty feminist and a lousy artist too - because a true artist wouldn't care.

Authors retain copyright and full ownership of their plays.

This is open to everyone without age and geographic restriction.

Get inspired. See your story come to life.

Quick Tips for Writing Your Ten-Minute Play

1. Write what inspires you and then see if there are elements in your play where you can have the characters evoke a specific taste. Alternatively you can start with a certain taste that evokes memories or triggers your imagination.

2. For example, you can have the taste of coffee as an important element of your play. The taste of coffee is referred to throughout the play but the play doesn't have to be about coffee. The coffee taste helps illuminate the message, theme or premise of the play.

3. Be imaginative. Taste can also be used metaphorically like having poor taste in clothes etc.

4. The sense of taste should not be gratuitous (i.e. only used once).

5. Any style of a play is acceptable.

6. Your ten-minute play should be a complete, compact play, with a beginning, middle and end. It should have a central character that wants something with a clear conflict and resolution.

Common Mistakes Playwrights Make in their Submission

Below are common mistakes people have made that have disqualified their plays:

1. The play was longer than 12 minutes. Read you play out loud. Time it. Whether you squeeze it into ten pages or five we know if this play will go over 12 minutes.

2. The play didn't have any element of the theme (in this case taste). Mentioning the theme in passing or only using it once is not enough.

3. The format was inconsistent and/or difficult to read. We accept any format that is consistent and easy to read.

4. The play had too many characters (usually 5 or more). The best ten-minute plays have two characters, maybe three, certainly not more than four characters. Do you really need that waiter walking on stage?

5. The playwright insisted on elaborate set requirements (i.e. a deluxe bedroom set). There is less than two minutes to make a set change. Keep set requirements to a minimum.

6. The submission was not a play; the character(s) didn't have a goal or want with a clear conflict and resolution.
