Groundbreakers, a weekly writers' workshop, focuses on this essential element in producing great plays and emphasizes growth in structure, story and dialogue. Through these workshops, we choose scripts to go on to the next level of development, a ten day rehearsal and staged reading. After careful consideration, one play from the second development tier receives a main stage production. Currently, we are opening script submissions. We will only consider plays previously unproduced. We especially want plays ripe for development and written by playwrights with a desire to enter into the process that Groundbreakers offers. Subject matter should be in the realistic realm and focus on an examination of sociology and relationships. Solo plays/shows that are currently in the developmental stage are welcome, too. For play submissions, please send to: terraNOVA Collective Literary Department 401 West 24th Street, #8 New York, NY 10010 (PLEASE DO NOT SEND CERTIFIED MAIL - INCLUDE A SASE IF YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR SCRIPT RETURNED) For questions on submission process or Groundbreakers please email literary@terranovacollective.org Tuesday, October 17, 2006Brian in "Hell's Gate"Member Brian Faherty appears in a film called "Hell's Gate" which will receive a screening Monday October 23 at 8PM at the Anthology Film Archives, 32 2nd Avenue. For over two decades, the Clauder Competition has been New England’s most prestigious competition for new plays. It was created in 1981 to celebrate the distinctive voices of our region’s playwrights and to bring their work to the attention of the greater theatrical community. The Clauder Competition identifies exciting new works and ensures their successful launch through readings and productions at Portland Stage Company, which adjudicates the competition and provides a creative home for the winning playwright. The goal of the Clauder Competition is to provide exposure, encouragement and critical feedback to promising playwrights who typically receive little more than a return postcard for material they send to theaters and producers. Past winners who have launched successful playwriting careers include Quiara Alegria Hudes, Adam Bock, Laura Harrington, Liz Egloff, Bridgit Carpenter, Melinda Lopez, Brian Silberman, W. August Schulenburg, William Donnelly, Liz Duffy Adams, and Paula Vogel. Clauder Prizes: Clauder Grand Prize: a $2,000 cash award, plus a workshop production and a full production at Portland Stage Company during the 2007-2008 season. Gold Prizes: a $500 cash award, plus a workshop production at Portland Stage Company. Additional prizes will also be awarded to the best play from each of the six New England states. Eligibility for the Clauder Competition: • Playwrights must currently live or attend school in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont. This residency requirement may be waived in cases where the material has significant relevance to New England and where the playwright has previously lived in New England for a considerable period of time. For questions of eligibility, contact Literary Manager Dan Burson at dburson@portlandstage.com. • Plays must be full-length, with a running time between one and three hours. • Plays must require no more than 8 actors to perform. Playwrights must provide a precise casting plot for larger casts that require doubling. • Plays must be original works, not an adaptation or translation. • Plays must not be primarily for younger audiences. • Plays must not have received a professional production, or publication, or a pledge/commitment for the same prior to the announcement of the Clauder Winner. This includes Actors Equity showcase and waiver productions. Plays that have had readings or non-AEA productions are still eligible. • The winning play must meet all eligibility requirements for a full production. In consideration of PSC’s mounting of the world premiere production, the grand prize winning playwright must provide a small percentage of their royalties from the work for five years following the premiere production. Clauder Submissions: One script per playwright. Submissions must be sent by U.S. Mail only - no e-mails, faxes, etc. Submissions must include the complete script with a cast breakdown and up-to-date playwright contact information to establish residency. No scripts that are handwritten or scripts that are otherwise illegible will be considered. We request that submissions not be bound in binding combs or other permanent bindings that will make them difficult to photocopy. Submitted scripts will NOT be returned. All submissions meeting the eligibility criteria will be reviewed by at least 2 readers, and will receive an individualized letter of response including readers’ comments following the announcement of the winner. Deadline: the deadline for the 2006 Clauder Competition has passed. Details on future competitions will be posted on this Web site. In the meantime, interested playwrights are invited to submit their work to the Little Festival of the Unexpected, following the guidelines listed below. Notification: prior to December 31, 2006. The status of submissions will not be disclosed until the announcement of the winner. Submit by mail to: Portland Stage Company Attn: 2006 Clauder Competition P.O. Box 1458 Portland, ME 04104 Script Submission Clauder Competition Little Festival ----> Young Writers Program From Away To the top Little Festival of the Unexpected Little Festival of the Unexpected is an annual event dedicated to public readings of new works. Three to five playwrights are in residence each year at the festival as they continue to develop their scripts with input from actors, directors and audience members. Since its debut in 1989, The Little Festival of the Unexpected has established a tradition of nurturing artists, invigorating audiences, and exploring new voices, new visions and new forms of theatre. The festival furnishes a supportive environment for playwrights to develop their work, as well as a unique opportunity for audiences to catch a firsthand look at the creative process that brings scripts to the stage. Little Festival readings are performed by a company of professional actors, and are followed by an open discussion between the audience, director and playwright. Each playwright in residence receives a stipend as well as housing during the festival. Limited support for travel is also available. Past Little Festival of the Unexpected scripts have a successful track record of full productions both here at Portland Stage and at other professional theaters around the country. Almost Maine, which was developed at the 2003 Little Festival, went on to become the most commercially successful mainstage production in PSC history. Many other Little Festival works have gone on to productions elsewhere, including successful Off-Broadway runs and television filming for PBS’ American Playhouse. This year’s Little Festival of the Unexpected is May 7–12, 2007. Little Festival of the Unexpected Submissions Submissions for the upcoming Little Festival of the Unexpected are accepted from September 1 through December 31 annually. Only one submission is accepted per playwright. Plays are eligible for development at The Little Festival of the Unexpected only if they have not previously been professionally produced or workshopped with Equity actors. This restriction includes Actors Equity showcase and waiver productions. Plays that have had readings or non-AEA productions are still eligible. Literary agents may submit complete scripts at any time. Playwrights may submit 10-page dialogue samples for consideration. Dialogue samples must be accompanied by a synopsis, production history and character breakdown. A script of an original "unproduced" play between 7 to 15 minutes. The theme should be on moving on OR you may choose to have a red sweater as an integral part of the play (you can also combine both the theme and object). Any style of a play is acceptable. Please avoid elaborate set requirements. 2. For the purposes of this festival an "unproduced" play is a play that has not received a fully staged production before a paying audience. 3. If selected your play will be performed at the Equity Showcase Theatre in Toronto, Canada from May 31 to June 9, 2007. 4. All submissions must be received as a WORD document and emailed to inspirato@ca.inter.net by midnight, January 29, 2007. You will be notified by February 17, 2007 if your play has been accepted. 5. For each script please include your full name, address, phone number and email address on the title page. The title page should also include a cast list and a 1 to 3 sentence synopsis of the play. The pages should be numbered. Please state if you have had any plays produced in the past (this will not have an effect in the selection process). A rule of thumb is that one page of single spaced, average dialogue will total about 80-90 seconds. 6. There are no entry fees and you may enter a maximum of three plays. No playwright will receive money for his or her play but if your play is selected, your play will receive a full production (minimum of 3 performances). The Ten Minute Festival will find the cast, crew and market your play. It is up to the discretion of the director whether they will work with the playwright. 7. Should your play be selected for inclusion in the festival, you are giving The Ten Minute Festival non-exclusive rights to publish your play, [ I checked on this---he means print copies to distribute to the members of his play committee....ed.]...without the encumbrance of royalty payments. You grant the non-exclusive right to The Ten Minute Festival to produce and perform the play during the 2nd Annual Toronto Ten Minute Festival from May 31 to June 9. 8. You retain the right to publish your play through any other publishing agents and perform it in any other venues you desire. 9. You may also enter your script by December 7, 2006 (as a finished piece or work in progress). This will give us an opportunity to possibly provide feedback or encouragement. If any response is given it will be by January 7. A response or lack of response does not mean either acceptance or refusal of your play. You still have to January 29 to submit your play. 10. In summary, the submission is open to unpublished, ten minute plays free of royalty and copyright restrictions. This is open to everyone without age and geographic restriction for both the novice and experienced playwright. Between 10 to 16 plays will be selected. At least half the plays selected will be written by residents in the Greater Toronto Area. We will read your script provided it meets the guidelines (we are playwrights who understand the hard work you put into your play). This popular short play competition will be presented at American Globe's 75 seat theatre on West 46th Street in the heart of Times Square April 23 – May 5, 2007. Turnip Theatre Company established The 15-Minute Play Festival in 1995 to present audiences with short, well-crafted plays while at the same time offering a professional venue for theater artists. American Globe Theatre became a Festival co-presenter in 2001. Over the past 12 years more than 350 new short plays have been presented, with many going on to subsequent productions and several to publication. Offoffonline.com called the Festival the highlight of the Off-off Broadway season (May 2004). Each year approximately 32 to 35 original short plays are selected from submissions from all over the United States and several foreign countries. Four to five plays are presented each of the first seven evenings of the semi-finals with one play chosen each night to move on to the finals and two additional performances. Finalists compete for $100 cash prizes for Best Play, Best Direction, Best Performance, and Audience Favorite. Finalists are also eligible for The Alan Minieri Memorial Playwriting Award in honor of Turnip Theatre Company's late Co-Artistic Director who died of cancer in 1997. The $300 Minieri Award is presented to a playwright whose work challenges convention in both content and form. Each semi-finalist whose work is presented in the Festival receives a $25 royalty. Playwrights and/or their representatives are responsible for the production of their play including casting, rehearsals, props, etc. The Festival presenters provide basic set pieces and lighting, sound equipment, and production staff. Plays are selected solely on the script submitted. Please do not include a playwright resume or play production history. Plays should have a beginning, middle, and end (though not necessarily in that order). Plays that create a unique world, are unpredictable, and can stand alone without complex production values are favored by the presenters. Monologues and published plays will not be considered. Submissions must be typed in play script format and be no more than 15 pages and in a font size no smaller than 12 point Times Roman or Courier/Courier New. Only plays with a running time of 15 minutes or less are eligible. Only one submission per writer will be accepted. If several plays are submitted by a single author, only one will be chosen at random to be read by the play reading committee. Submissions should be sent by regular mail to 15 Minute Play Festival, c/o American Globe Theatre, 145 W. 46th Street, New York, NY 10036. Submissions are not accepted by email, fax, or express/overnight mail. Submissions must be postmarked by December 15, 2006. Playwrights whose plays are selected will be notified in mid-February 2007. Plays will not be returned, so please do not send a return envelope. There will be a mandatory meeting for all playwrights or their representatives in March and a production meeting for all participating artists in April 2007. More info: http://www.americanglobe.org/festival.html 2007 SUNDANCE INSTITUTE THEATRE LAB, JULY 9-29, 2007Deadline: 12-15-2006] The Sundance Institute Theatre Laboratory will be held over three weeks, July 9-29, 2007, at the Sundance Resort in Sundance, Utah. We welcome projects at any stage of development, but usually look for work that is ready to be explored, at least in part, on its feet. We encourage artists to share their exploration with other Theatre Lab colleagues by opening their rehearsal process to one another, whenever possible. If you do not feel that an "open rehearsal room" is in the spirit of your project, Sundance may not be an appropriate venue. The physical resources at Sundance include four rehearsal rooms, a writing room, a music room, and thousands of acres of magnificent mountain scenery. Projects rehearse every other day to give playwrights adequate time for re-writes. Actors are usually double cast in two projects. There is no physically controllable space, such as a "black box." Although lights and sets are not available to assist in project development, designers have participated in the development of text. Process is tailored to the project's individual needs and stage of development, including readings, text analysis, blocking rehearsals, music rehearsals, meetings with artistic staff, and private presentations to the assembled artistic community. PROJECT SELECTION The Sundance Institute Theatre Laboratory selects up to eight projects per year. Through open submissions, we consider an estimated 600 projects. Sundance looks for original, compelling, human stories that reflect the independent vision of the theatre artist. We are interested in supporting a diverse and daring group of theatre artists who tell unique stories, present material in a new form, or conceptualize existing material with an innovative directorial vision. Applications can be submitted by playwrights, directors or choreographers. We prefer to have a committed director attached to all projects. Sundance is interested in both established and emerging theatre artists, as well as artists making a transition from areas outside of theatre. We welcome solo performers and projects for young audiences. In the case of projects that are not strictly text-based (dance/theatre pieces, image-based work), an artistic statement detailing the style and vision of the piece is essential. Previous applicants can re-apply. Participants must be available for the entire length of the Lab. Artists can only submit one application. The postmark deadline for all submissions is December 15, 2006. Applicants will be notified by April 9, 2007. Any length, style, or subject is welcome. Email submissions to Shanara McKeever, Playwright-in-Residence, at ratutucollaborative@yahoo.com. Please put my name on the subject line, and a brief synopsis of your play in the body of the email. Also include 5 sample pages, an overview of your experience and any interesting anecdotes about yourself. All plays must be original in English, and not boring. For information on us and our previous productions, visit our website at ratutu.com Tuesday, October 03, 2006Seeking plays that explore science & technologySTAGE Script Competition Submission Guidelines Submitted plays must explore scientific and/or technological stories, themes, issues and/or events. Science and technology must figure prominently in the script, whether in form or content or both. Biographical dramas, history plays, and medical dramas are discouraged unless they significantly employ science and/or technology. Authors are strongly urged to avoid the stereotypes often assigned to science, technology, and those who engage in these disciplines. This competition is not open to plays written in the genre of science fiction. All entries must be postmarked on or before January 15, 2007. Specific eligibility requirements: All plays must be original, full-length (minimum running time: 70 minutes), and submitted in English. Plays that have been published, received a full-fledged production, or been reviewed prior to the submission deadline are not eligible. Plays that have had readings or a workshop are acceptable. Plays or theatre pieces incorporating multi-media are acceptable. Material presented in a new form or not entirely script-based is also acceptable. In these cases, please submit an artistic statement that describes such elements in detail. Those working with/in multi-media/new forms may also submit samples of the visual interpretation of the piece, e.g., sketches, slides, DVD, or the like. Collaborations are eligible. Original material based on an existing published work or the like may be submitted if the author(s): are the owners of the existing published work, or have written permission from the author and owner of the existing published work to adapt this work for the stage and a copy of this written permission accompanies the submission of your play and all supporting materials. Any adaptations that do not fulfill these requirements are not eligible. Authors may submit only one script per contest cycle. Scripts submitted in a previous contest cycle may not be resubmitted unless they have been significantly re-written, i.e., more than 50% of the script must be substantially changed from the previous submission. No musicals, translations or screenplays are being accepted at this time. Those involved in any aspect of the STAGE Script Competition application or review process are not eligible to enter. To assist the STAGE Competition in ongoing fund-raising efforts - and to thereby assist future artists - we ask the winning author(s) to credit, accompanied by respective logos, on the title page of all printed materials of future readings, workshops, productions, programs and publications of the winning piece, as follows: "Developed with the Assistance of the Professional Artists Lab, the California NanoSystems Institute, and the STAGE Project." The winning play will be announced on this website on June 15, 2007. The winning author will be notified directly, prior to public notification. Scripts will be judged by an esteemed panel of jurors, to be announced. Previous judges included playwright and MacArthur Fellow Luis Alfaro; award-winning theatre, film and television director Arvin Brown; Dr. Polly Carl, Producing Artistic Director of the Minneapolis Playwrights' Center; Nobel Laureates David Gross (2004 Physics) and Alan Heeger (2000 Chemistry); Professional Artists Lab Playwright-in-Residence Barbara Lebow; and Eduardo Machado, award-winning playwright and Artistic Director of New York's INTAR Theatre. All submissions must include: A cover letter. Completed entry form, as follows: Please submit the entry form online. After you click on the "Submit Entry Form" button, a confirmation page will appear on your screen. Please print out this confirmation page and mail it in with your script copies and other submission materials. A one-page (maximum) synopsis of the script. A written statement regarding: the specific manner in which the play relates to the fields of science and/or technology; how the play has developed up to the present; and how the author(s) envision the future development of the script and the culmination of this work. A bio/resume for each author. Two copies of the play, in English. Since scripts will be read as blind submissions, the title pages on both copies of the play should include only the name of the play and the year in which it was written. The name(s) of the author(s) must not appear anywhere on the scripts. Each script should include a list of characters or a cast breakdown. Receipt of submissions will be acknowledged by e-mail. We regret that it is not possible to return any submission materials. Click here for a summary/checklist of all required submission materials. The process is this: every two months (this may go to once a month, depending on response and energy) Black Swan will arrange a reading of a new script or scripts before an audience, to which the playwright will be invited. Response sheets will be given to director, performers, and audience to aid in the development of the play, and an audio recording will be made for the playwright if he cannot be in attendance. Especially promising scripts will undergo further development at Black Swan and at Highland Repertory Theater (our professional partner in this endeavor) toward the end of possible full production. No payment to the playwright during reading and development, but contracts negotiated for full productions.
