Latino plays wanted

A Showcase for Playwrights!

Pregones Theater's Asunción Playwrights Project showcases the work of Latino playwrights exploring issues of difference and transformation at the limits of queer identity. The project especially seeks works that challenge assumptions about gender and sexuality.

Asunción organizes three to four public readings of plays each season at Pregones' La Casa Blanca. This is an intimate setting where the readings are followed by an open discussion between the playwright, audience members and artists. The plays are selected by Pregones' Artistic Directors from works submitted to the company.

The selection process is made up of two preliminary rounds. The first round is open to any author interested in submitting his/her work. A completed application form must be submitted together with a 10 page sample of the work. The second round is by invitation only. A selected group of finalists are invited to submit their work in its entirety for final consideration.
The public readings are selected from this group of finalists. Asunción organizes and promotes the readings, and offers administrative support and rehearsal space towards the reading. After the readings are conducted, one play is selected to receive a workshop production at Pregones' state of the arts 130-seat theater. Pregones covers all expenses of the workshop
production plus a $300 fee for the winning writer.

Playwrights are invited to submit original, full length works for the stage that have never been produced and are not under option. Plays may be submitted in either Spanish or English and may range in style and structure.
Asunción will only consider works of superior artistic rigor that meet one or more of the project's criteria; mainly works that:
• explore issues of difference and transformation at the limits of queer
identity;
• challenge normative assumptions of gender;
• present Latino spiritual and sensual explorations beyond the boundaries of
gender and essentialist notions of sexual orientation;
• go beyond coming out stories;
• challenge normative notions of family;
• dwell in alterity and encounter;
• place queer expectations of love and sex in a Latino cultural and
historical context;
• are significant to the lives of Latino gay, lesbian, bisexual and
transgendered people.

No Boundaries Festival 2006

The Young Mirror Company is looking for submission from playwrights for a One-Act Festival in Mid October. We are looking for plays that match our idea of theatre as a place of passion, energy, and life, not dry discussion. Too often playwrights consciously shrink or tone down their own work in hopes of production. Not for this festival. Write whatever you want. If you want a show with spaceships, put some spaceships in. If you want 20 characters, write 20 characters. You dream it up, we’ll find a way to stage it. Please send submissions to anelson@mirrorrepertory.com
Please send an intent to submit letter with a synopsis of your possible work by August 1st, full text by September 1. 30-45 minutes preferred,
We are also always accepting full length submissions.

Ian Walker received the 2005 award for The Gravediggers Tango. For a complete list of all entries from 2005, go to www.larrycorse.com.

CHEKHOV NOW FESTIVAL PLAYWRITING CONTEST SUBMISSION

Deadline: 7-15-2006 Looking for new theatrical adaptations of the short stories of Anton Chekhov to receive a cash award of $250 and a workshop production at the 2007 Chekhov Now Festival in New York City. Two pieces will be chosen. Any length will be considered; works may have been previously produced, but not in New York. Since 1999, the Chekhov Now Festival has been a venue for new and innovative works for theatre from around the country and around the world, based on the writings of Anton Chekhov. Its mission has been to explore Chekhov outside of the realm of the naturalistic theatre; the festival invites, commissions, and presents productions and adaptations that emphasize the theatrical, the physical, and the experimental.

This year, in hopes of finding new work from across the nation and the globe, we are sponsoring a contest to find two short story adaptations for our next festival, which will be produced at The Chocolate Factory in Long Island City in January 2007. All submissions must be received by July 15, 2006 to be considered. Please send inquiries and/or submissions via email to pac22@psu.edu or via regular mail to: Peter Campbell, Literary Manager, CNF, Penn State - Berks, PO Box 7009, Reading, PA 19610.
