CURIOUS THEATRE COMPANY wants scripts

Curious is committed to producing full-length plays that provoke, cajole, question and disturb our perspectives on important contemporary social, cultural and political issues. We encourage experimentation in form, structure and character, but also celebrate accessibility and engagement. We are not looking for plays that offer easy answers, or represent only a single point of view within a complex issue. We rarely produce kitchen-sink dramas or completely naturalistic plays.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
In addition to agent submissions, Curious Theatre Company will accept unsolicited manuscripts to the following specifications:

Please send a query letter including a one-page synopsis, a ten page dialogue sample of the script, the development history of the play, and a resume listing other works. We prefer submissions through standard mail and will only accept electronic submissions with prior permission.

If your play seems like Curious material, we will request the full manuscript. If your full script is requested, please mark “SOLICITED” on the outer envelope, and either send us a SASE or SASPC with proper postage, or indicate if we may recycle the script. All scripts will be reviewed by Curious Theatre Company’s Literary Committee.

Due to the high volume of submissions, please allow four to six months for a response. You may submit an e-mail query to bonnie@curioustheatre.org. Please attach required submission materials in Microsoft Word Format (.doc).
Or, you may send inquiries by standard mail (include SASE) to:

East West Players seek scripts

EAST WEST PLAYERS
Play Submission Guidelines: EWP now accepting unsolicited manuscripts
Please be aware that we are an Asian American theatre, and most of the new works we produce revolve around Asian Pacific American (as opposed to Asian) characters and/or themes. We are looking for both comedy and drama, in English and financially viable (which includes considerations such as cast size, number of sets, etc.), and they don’t necessarily have to be "issue-oriented," in that race can be an unspoken component in the work.

Writers are strongly encouraged to browse through our production history, which can be found here . Ask yourselves what kind of plays we’ve produced in the past, and who our audience is.

Manuscripts should be bound, preferably with brads and three-hole punch paper, with a title pagecontaining all contact information for the author. Please also include cover letter and resume.

If you’d like to send a SASP (self-addressed stamped postcard) for confirmation of receipt, we’ll send it back to you when we receive your materials.

If you’d like us to return your script, please send a manuscript-sized SASE with the appropriate postage. We typically keep all plays for our archives; please let us know if you would NOT like us to do so.

If you have Internet access and prefer to be notified via email, we can do that as well.

Please allow 3 – 9 months for consideration. All scripts are read by our Literary Committee and a single script is read by a minimum of 2 readers, sometimes more, before we make a recommendation.

Address your scripts to:
Jeff Liu, Literary Manager
East West Players
120 Judge John Aiso St.
Los Angeles, CA 90012.

FFI: www.eastwestplayers.org
PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL SCRIPTS. Good luck!

(If you live in Los Angeles and would like to volunteer for the EWP Literary Committee, please email jliu@eastwestplayers.org.

Lake Edun Foundation seeks one-act Naturist plays

The Lake Edun Foundation is offering an $800 purse for the best original one-act play dealing with issues of body acceptance from a Naturist’s perspective. While nudity may be an element within the play, it is not required. What is most important is the originality employed to effectively convey the message.

All original manuscripts must be submitted by June 1, 2006. Up to four semi-finalists will be selected for performance in the fall. Lake Edun Foundation will be responsible for producing and staging.

Prizes will be: 1st place – $500
2nd place – $200
3rd place – $100

Submission may be made on line (PDFs) to benude@lakeedun.com or may be mailed to:

Lake Edun Foundation
P.O. Box 1982
Topeka, Kansas 66601

THE SMALL PRINT
All manuscripts must be original unpublished work.

All manuscripts must be deemed suitable by the Lake Edun Foundation. Playwrights should rely on the quality of their script to carry the story rather than crudity, sexual innuendo, or demeaning content.

All entries must deal with issues of body acceptance from a Naturist’s perspective. Information on Naturism can be found on various sites on the Web including www.naturist.com.

All entries must be suitable for production before Naturists’ children. In other words, nudity on stage is acceptable, as naturist children do not suffer from body phobia.

Judging criteria will include
Audience appeal
Originality
Some of the following
Success in conveying the need for better body acceptance
Ability to portray the adverse consequences of poor body acceptance
The joys of Naturism and non-sexual social nudity
The positive family aspects of Naturism
The ability to convey the beneficial impact that living a clothing-free lifestyle can have on the family, community, and society.

Any entries received by June 1, 2006 will be read and evaluated. As many as three may be chosen for semi-blocked readings during the summer. Playwrights may make revisions and re-submit prior to June 1, 2006, if they wish. Authors submitting by this date enjoy the advantage of evaluating audience reaction and making revisions before the June deadline, if desired.

Although nudity may be employed in the play, it is not required. Playwrights should consider it if it advances their story line.

Deadline for all submissions is June 1, 2006. Selection of the semi-finalists will be made on the basis of manuscripts alone.

Winners will be chosen by a judging panel. Audience reaction will be considered, although it will not be a controlling part in the final decision.

Playwrights wishing to have their manuscripts returned must inclose a SASE.
The copyright will remain with the playwright. Playwrights whose entries are selected as semi-finalists agree and give to the Lake Edun Foundation the unlimited, non-exclusive right to read, produce, perform and otherwise use their entry until December 31, 2007. They will receive credit for their work. The Lake Edun Foundation may charge an admission to view these productions. Playwrights will not receive additional funds.

This project is partially underwritten by the Naturist Education Fund.

One Acts for Carrollwood Players

Submissions deadline JUNE 1, 2006

All budding playwrights are encouraged to send their one-act manuscripts to:
Carrollwood Players
P.O. Box 270116
Tampa, FL 33688
Attn: Artistic Director, Jim Brennan

Carrollwood Players welcomes submission of "never-before-staged-in-the-Tampa-Area" scripts for our Ninth Annual ONE ACT WEEKEND scheduled for August 2006. We accept monologues, but generally prefer multi-player scripts, easily staged, and limited to approximately 10-15 minutes.
We will consider single acts of major productions that stand independently. In previous years, the nationwide response has been overwhelming. For example, last year we received more than 120 submissions, many of which deserved presentation. Unfortunately, our schedule currently limits us to performing the ten or eleven chosen plays on a single three day weekend in August.

The deadline for submissions is June 1, 2006. Selections will be made expeditiously and all playwrights will be notified no later than June 16, 2006. Those scripts selected will be performed precisely as written unless modified by the author to conform to time and staging limitations.

If you have any questions, please call
Carrollwood Players at 813-265-4000,
and leave a message for
Jim Brennan, Artistic Director.
We are located at 4333 Gunn Highway, Tampa, FL 33624, in the Plantation Plaza between Casey and Linebaugh.

Playwrights wanted for musical development

New Sounds Theatre is seeking submissions for its groundbreaking Sandbox series, which pairs new play readings with performances by a guest composer (provided by our New Sounds "matchmakers").

We are seeking non-musical plays that show potential for the use of original music, as well as more complete music-theatre pieces that are further along in their development. More traditional musicals are welcome, though we’re really looking for material that blurs the lines a little.

We are also seeking songwriters and composers who want to explore their theatrical side. No prior theatre experience is necessary. Please email us for more info about how to get involved.

Playwrights, please send a cover letter, resume, synopsis and fifteen page writing sample to:

THE HARRIETT LAKE FESTIVAL OF NEW PLAYS

Deadline: 6-1-2006
Submission Guidelines for 06-07 Season
Playfest is seeking new full-length plays based on or inspired by
works of classic literature or historic events. We prefer plays that
require six actors or less, and have a particular interest in one-
person shows. However, even in the case of one person shows, we are
not looking for history lectures, or museum piece adaptations that
are faithful to a fault, but rather dynamic new theatrical versions
of classic stories that speak to the contemporary mindset. Also
seeking plays that have appeal to Hispanic audiences but still fall
within the guidelines listed above. We are also seeking Musical
adaptations. We will be a little less strict about the cast size, but
are only interested in musical based on or inspired by works of
classic literature or historic events.

In order to qualify for PlayFest a play must:
1. NOT have received more than two professional AEA productions
2. NOT have received a Broadway of Off-Broadway production
3. NOT have received Orlando production in current form
4. NOT be published for general distribution

Each year we select around ten new plays to be presented as readings.
Two or three of those plays may go on to be developed in workshops
during the Harriett Lake Festival of New Plays (February, 23 to March
4, 2007). Playwrights of workshop plays will receive a stipend,
travel and housing expenses. Many workshop plays go on to be fully
produced as part of a subsequent Orlando-UCF Shakespeare Festival
season.

Submissions should include a bio/resume, a one page synopsis, five
pages of sample dialogue, a character breakdown, and an email
address. Please do not send full scripts.

Mail submissions to:
Patrick Flick
Director of New Play Development
Playfest, Orlando-UCF Shakespeare Festival
812 East Rollins St. Suite 100
Orlando, FL 32803

Submission deadline for the 2006/2007 season is June 1, 2006.
Playwrights will be notified via email no later than August 1, 2006
as to whether or not they are to send the full script.

CARROLLWOOD PLAYERS’ 9TH ANNUAL ONE ACT PLAY FESTIVAL

Deadline: 6-1-2006
Carrollwood Players welcomes submission of "never-before-staged-in-
the-Tampa-Area" scripts for our Ninth Annual ONE ACT WEEKEND
scheduled for August 2006.
We accept monologues, but generally prefer multi-player scripts,
easily staged, and limited to approximately 10-15 minutes. We will
consider single acts of major productions that stand independently.
In previous years, the nationwide response has been overwhelming. For
example, last year we received more than 120 submissions, many of
which deserved presentation. Unfortunately, our schedule currently
limits us to performing the ten or eleven chosen plays on a single
three day weekend in August.

The deadline for submissions is June 1, 2006. Selections will be made
expeditiously and all playwrights will be notified no later than June
16, 2006. Those scripts selected will be performed precisely as
written unless modified by the author to conform to time and staging
limitations.

Questions? Call Carrollwood Players at 813-265-4000, and leave a
message for
Jim Brennan, Artistic Director.

NORTH AMERICAN ACTORS ASSOCIATION’S SUMMER READING FESTIVAL

Deadline: 5-20-2006
The North American Actors Association is pleased to announce a call
for manuscripts for its 6th annual playreading festival competition.
Entries selected will be rehearsed and read by professional North
American actors at publicized public readings at a prestigious West
End venue in London in August of 2006.

These rehearsed readings are undertaken as showcase performances for
the writer and the actors, and no remuneration will be given --
although obviously the exposure could lead to a full production
elsewhere. They offer the writer the chance to have his/her work seen
and heard under professional direction and using the talents of
professional actors.

All the plays must be appropriate for a theatrical reading -- no
screenplays, please -- and must have predominantly North American
casts as they will be cast from the membership of the NAAA. The
subject matter should deal with North American culture, though the
plays do not necessarily need to be set in North America. Play
lengths should be approximately two hours for a full play and one
hour or less for a one-act, though other running lengths will be
considered. Deadline for entries is 20 May 2006. Please submit two
copies of the script and include a covering note with your name,
email address and contact telephone number(s), as well as a self-
addressed stamped envelope if you wish your manuscript to be
returned. Previously submitted scripts should not be resubmitted.

Entries should be mailed (no email submissions, please!) to:

c/o NAAA

London W8 5AA

Santa Fe Performing Arts Playwrights Competition

PLAYWRIGHT'S COMPETITION

Santa Fe Performing Arts Playwright's Competition was developed to support American Playwrights.
