Herring Run call for one-act plays

Call For Scripts for 2006
Each September, the Herring Run ArtsFest presents its celebration of one-act plays. Herring Run was formed to vitalize the regional creative community, and to foster new relationships among artists. We cultivate fresh voices, and innovative ideas. We especially encourage those residing in the Northeast USA to submit. The program runs Friday and Saturday, presenting 6 one-act plays each evening. Directors may have previous directing experience, but it is not necessary. However, your resume must show creative potential. Each play must be original, and not previously performed. 12 one-act plays no more than 12 pages in length for 2006 will be chosen. Please make your submission via traditional snail mail. When final scripts are chosen, we will ask you to send an e-copy.

Haven seeks original one-acts

The Haven is a group of artists in New York City committed to social justice are producing a festival of original one-acts called The Mercy Plays in October 2006

Each piece will somehow explore the theme of ‘mercy’­the presence or lack thereof. Their hope is that every person engaged in this project – artist and audience member alike - will gain a new perspective on mercy as it impacts our own lives and the world around us

They intend to use The Mercy Plays to support an organization that is showing mercy to thousands of people around the globe - Mercy Ships which utilizes a fleet of hospital ships to deliver free world-class health care services to the most destitute populations in developing nations, impacting over 5.5 million people since 1978

They are actively looking for talented playwrights to collaborate on this project. If you are interested in participating, please submit original works, 10 - 30 minutes in length. They wish to explore mercy from a variety of perspectives, and encourage pieces that go beyond the expected - small cast with minimal set requirements

Playwright for the Origins Project

City Lights Youth Theatre, a non-profit theatre arts organization, is seeking a Playwright to work collaboratively with 15 students and a director during the summer of 2006 on our Origins Project. The Origins Project, in partnership with the New-York Historical Society, is an innovative summer program that offers New York City teens the unique opportunity to work with a professional playwright and a professional director to create and perform a new theatrical work. Utilizing primary research material from the New-York Historical Society, first-hand interviews, and site-visits, students integrate personal experiences with those seated in the historical past, and are able to bring history to life using the magic of live theatre.

Responsibilities:
The playwright will work two days a week with the students, leading activities to encourage responses from the outings, and working with students to elicit written material for the script. The other three days will be spent researching the historical events to be discussed and devising a show based on the original material produced by the students. The playwright will need to occasionally consult with the Artistic and Education Directors at City Lights to ensure that the script mirrors the guidelines established for the Origins Project. An assistant is provided for the playwright.
Qualifications:
-Must have at least 2 years experience working with/teaching students ages 5 and up
-Must submit a writing sample
-B.A/M.A Preferred

Dates:
The Origins Project runs from Monday – Friday, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm starting Wednesday, July 5th, and ending in final performances, Friday August 11th, and Saturday, August 12, 2006.

Slam seeks playwrights

After two successful runs, SLAM Theater is back at The Tank for another round.

SLAM Theater invites artists and audiences to get involved in the process of making theater. Playwrights bring fresh scripts, and actors are called out of a hat to perform them, completely unrehearsed. Then the judges score them. Writers of the top scoring plays get to unveil more of their work and bring a director on to jump in and act fast as they give timed notes. SLAM is an evening of theater with impromptu performance, and a little bit of competition.

PLAYWRIGHTS, just show up with scripts, either finished or in the works..Please bring enough copies of scripts per actors in the cast.
SLAM is a fun & informal way to workshop pieces, test them with an audience and meet other theater artists.

READING COMMUNITY PLAYERS/READING RAILROAD MUSEUM ONE-ACT PLAY COMPETITION

ONE-ACT PLAYS: Original one-act plays are being sought for a joint RCP and Reading Railroad Museum production in June/July of 2007, to celebrate the first anniversary of the Museum’s opening. In order to anticipate the number of committee members (judges) from both organizations:

A LETTER OF INTENT TO SUBMIT is required and DUE BY JUNE 1, 2006. This may be a simple letter with the Playwright’s name, address, phone numbers, e-mail address, etc. stating that he/she will be providing an eligible script before the end of the submission process. Mail to RCP Playwriting Committee, P.O. Box 1032, Reading, PA 19603-1032 or e-mail to keldev@ptd.net.

SUBMISSION PERIOD: JUNE 2006 TO MARCH 31, 2007 (postmark).
The Process: Entries will be received and circulated among a panel of judges; one winner will be chosen, and 1 or 2 additional short plays may be selected for production on the stage at RCP and/or the Reading Railroad Museum, during the summer of 2007.

GUIDELINES
1. Plays must relate to the Reading Railroad’s history in and around Reading, but, of course, may be historical fiction. Our primary interests are the quality of the work and the relevance to the Reading Railroad history (may include the present or future)
2. Single set, minimal furniture, props, etc.
3. Cast limit of eight.
4. No prior production in the Berks County, PA Area.
5. Length may be 15 to 50 minutes.

BACKGROUND
Widely recognized as a name from the Monopoly board, the Reading (pronounced Red-ding) Railroad grew from a 94-mile coal hauling line to become the world's largest corporation before settling down to operating a 1,300 mile railroad system in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Today, segments of the Reading are an important part of the Norfolk Southern and CSX systems as well as numerous shortline railroads. For more information see the website www.readingrailroad.org.

Reading Community Players is the third oldest community theatre in Pennsylvania, opening with its first production in 1921. It produces five or six full length plays each season and includes drama, comedy, mystery, and children’s shows. One-act plays, new plays, and Readers’ Theatre productions are also produced periodically. Membership stands at nearly 200 from the Greater Reading area. Aurora Theatre's Submitting to The Global Age Project

Submitting to The Global Age Project The GAP is Aurora Theatre Company's annual new play development program to nurture and explore forward-looking visions of global import. Potential topics include the environment, childcare, automation, cloning, life-span, family, currency, communications, business, politics, spirituality, warfare and entertainment to name a few. Comedic or serious, experimentation with innovative forms of theatrical storytelling is also encouraged.

Submissions will culminate in a three week festival of staged readings in the spring of 2007. Six scripts will be selected with the potential of a full production the following season.

Remuneration: $1,000, reading, travel and housing for playwrights outside the Bay Area, possible production.

Length: unproduced scripts of any length.

Styles: all styles.

Subjects: Pertaining to the future state of the global community.

First Flights seeks full-length plays

First Flights invites submissions of original, full-length plays for possible production in either our studio theatre or our mainstage theatre.

All plays must be previously unproduced. If yours has already had one or more readings or staged readings by any kind of theatre company, please enclose an explanatory history.

We accept full-length translations and adaptations as well as completely original works.

We do not accept musicals, children’s plays, screenplays, or one-acts.

the submission process

We welcome submissions any time from October through May. Please do not send us materials during the summer months.

Please send (via standard mail) a one- or two-page synopsis, a cast list, and the first ten pages of the script. Also include your own resume; no more than two pages. Please do not send the complete script unless we invite you to do so.

Be sure to format the script in standard stage playwriting style.

Your contact information should include E-mail address, telephone number(s) and postal address.

If you’d like to be sure that your materials arrived, enclose a stamped, self-addressed post card with "First Flights" written in the message area. We will not return your materials.

the review process
All submissions will undergo review by a combination of undergraduates, graduate students and faculty. When we identify a play that seems suitable for our needs, we will contact the playwright and ask for a copy of the complete script. After further review, we will select a limited number of plays for readings or staged readings, and we'll subsequently select those we wish to mount in full production.

We will acknowledge your initial submission only if we choose to request the complete script, usually within six months of receiving your materials.

The process will continue on an ongoing basis during each academic year.

performance rights

Your submission grants First Flights permission to hold readings or staged readings without remuneration to the author. If First Flights selects a script for full production, we will seek permission and negotiate royalties with the author. If your submission is an adaptation of material not in the public domain, we can consider it for even a reading only if you include a document granting you the appropriate rights.

First Flights is a project of the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Oregon. In May, 2003, University Theatre mounted its 1000th production.

Theatre@First seeks short one-act plays and directors

Theatre@First, Davis Square's own community theatre, seeks short one-act plays and directors for an evening of one-acts to be performed over the weekends of July 15 and 22. Our committee is looking for quality plays by established or local playwrights that draw the broadest possible audience while creating a vibrant evening of theatre. Theme will be determined by the play-reading committee and selected based on the plays received.

Each play will have its own director and cast, and all casting will take place via a general audition this spring. Those interested in directing are encouraged to submit a work of your choice, as are playwrights who would prefer not to direct. Submission criteria is as follows:

* 10-20 minute plays on any theme (may not exceed 20 minutes)
* Cast minimum of 2 (no maximum)
* No improvisation or all-dance pieces
* Reasonably appropriate language and content (our audiences are mature, but we
do perform in a church. Mild profanity OK, within reason.)
* Original or published plays are equally accepted. Please indicate whether or not you
would be directing.
* Plays will be performed on a simple stage with minimal set requirements and a repertory light plot.
* The plays should be ROYALTY-FREE. As we are a volunteer-run community theatre, we
cannot offer pay. Theatre@First was founded to provide affordable quality theatre to our
community and to offer an artistic venue to community members wishing to share their skills
and talents.
* DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION IS March 31, 2006.

The David Mamet Write-Alike Contest

'Mametspeak,' 'Mametian,' yes, David Mamet is such a unique playwright, he's inspired his own vocabulary words. Now, as part of Goodman Theatre's upcoming David Mamet Festival, we invite you to walk a mile in this great Chicagoan's shoes by writing a Mamet play of your very own.

Open to all Chicagoland writers, entries will be judged by members of Goodman's artistic staff, and the winning scripts will receive a public staged reading during the run of the Mamet Festival. Winners will also receive valuable prizes, including free tickets to our production of Mamet's A Life in the Theatre, directed by Robert Falls, a Lettuce Entertain You® restaurant gift certificate and handsome Mamet Festival t-shirts!

Contest guidelines:

Inspired by our production of Mamet's A Life In The Theatre, scenes should be in one of the following styles:

Backstage: A 'backstage' scene between the actors performing in a Mamet play (i.e. backstage at a production of American Buffalo, or Boston Marriage).
Character: A scene between characters from two or more different Mamet plays (i.e. between Carol in Oleanna and the guys from Glengarry Glen Ross)
Adaptation: A scene from a play that might be found in a repertory theater's repertoire as adapted by Mamet (i.e. David Mamet's Private Lives, or David Mamet's Arsenic and Old Lace)
Length, Format, Style and Characters:

One scene, maximum of three pages, plus an introduction
Written as drama, in script form
Maximum of four characters, male or female, any age range

One-act plays wanted

Actor member Rachel Langley is doing her annual Coffee Shop - A Night of One Acts in April (last year it was in March, successfully produced at Producer's Club in NYC.) She is looking for one-act plays for this year's production.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Plays should be no more than 15-20 minutes in length.
  • Only two characters.
  • Ideally it is a play with two female characters only, but will accept play submissions that are female & a male character.
  • One character must be a female in the age range of late 20s - late 30s.

    Multiple submissions will be accepted from writers.
