Backdoor Theatre's 21st Annual New Play Project

Backdoor Theatre’s New Play project, established in 1985, exists to cultivate playwrights and to showcase new theatre. In a workshop environment, selected plays are mounted with full production value and receive at least six performances in Backdoor’s 170 seat Mainstage theatre. Submitted plays are processed through a play-reading panel, and selection is made in collaboration with the theatre’s professional staff. Description of Heartland Theatre Company's Performance Space
Our intimate theatre is vital and immediate to all 67 spectators. We've effective sound resources, and adequate lighting. There is no off-stage wing space, and we find the most successful staging is designed to accommodate a three-quarter house. We do use four entrances in our presentations, two upstage openings, and two vomitoria that come from both sides of the center section of the audience. There is not a working fly gallery in our theatre, and the audience is terraced upwards so they are looking down on our presentations. Ten-minute plays are performed in groups of four plays before intermission with a separate curtain call for those involved in those plays, and four plays following intermission. Ideally we'd find elements of all four plays at work on the stage from the beginning of the performance and move effortlessly from one play to the next with a minimum of re-arranging of properties and furniture. In an ideal world all necessary scene changes would transpire only during intermission. Exceptions to this are sure to arise, but by keeping your imagined floor plan simple you are giving us a deserving advantage.

Bay Area Playwrights Festival/Bay Area Shorts Submission info

Starting September 15, 2006 Playwrights Foundation is accepting submissions for the 30th anniversary Bay Area Playwrights Festival, summer 2007. The Bay Area Playwrights Festival is open to all American playwrights writing in English, including students enrolled in a BFA or MFA playwriting program. In a strictly juried selection process 5-6 plays are chosen to appear at the festival.

Playwrights chosen for the festival are given 2 weeks of rehearsal (with a professional dramaturge, director, visual artist and actors) and 2 rehearsed readings separated by 5-6 days for rewrites during the 2-week festival in July and August at a San Francisco theater. The last two festivals were held at the Magic Theatre.

A pre-festival weekend retreat in July brings together artistic teams consisting of playwrights, directors, dramaturges, and visual artists. Brainstorming and feedback from other festival participants occur during the retreat. It is mandatory for playwrights to be in residence for the entire retreat and festival period.

Local and national producers are invited to the festival to see the staged readings and meet the playwrights.

Special attention is given to Bay Area writers and emerging writers.

Financial arrangement: small stipend, travel, housing.

Application procedure: please mail your play with resume and cover letter. Be sure to include your current e-mail address, as all further festival communication will be conducted electronically. Enrolled BFA and MFA students may also submit a letter of recommendation.

Guidelines: send one unproduced original full-length play. Only one submission per playwright, please. Plays shorter than 50 and longer than 150 pages are not considered standard full-length and will be disqualified. Play that has previously received a public reading (script in hand) is considered unproduced. Play that has previously received professional production, whether on Broadway, or in a small, off-off company is considered produced and does not qualify.

Please note: Only snail mail submissions are accepted. Electronic submissions are not allowed. Scripts will not be returned. Please do not send notification postcards, as we will alert you electronically after December 15, 2006 that we have received your submission. Please make sure all documents are securely bound.

Deadline: Postmarked by November 30 (priority deadline) December 15 (absolute deadline), 2006. If more than 500 scripts are received by November 30, absolute deadline will not be honored. 500 will be a cut-off number for plays received between November 30 and December 15. It is in your best interest to send your submissions early.

Mailing Address: Please send submissions to:
BAPF 30
Playwrights Foundation
131 ~ 10th St, Third Floor

Submissions must be postmarked by February 15th, 2006 and will be evaluated by our Selection Committee. Final selections will be made at the end of May. Writers will receive a small stipend and a festival pass.

Submission Guidelines

1 The IPF is open to any author regardless of nationality, but all plays should be in English.

2 Plays must be full length and previously unproduced, estimated playing time, not less than 90 minutes and not more than 120 minutes.

3 Scripts must be clearly typed on bond paper, double-spaced with wide margins, pages must be numbered and the text securely bound.

Plays must be submitted using a pseudonym to ensure impartiality and the author’s real name removed from allpages of the script. Whilst all reasonable care will be taken, the IPF does not accept responsibility for loss of, or damage to, submitted scripts.

If your play is an adaptation, please secure the permission to the underlying rights prior to submission. Full length plays only, please. Submissions are limited to one play per author per season. Musicals and theatre for young audiences should send a letter of inquiry first. Due to the large volume of submissions, please allow up to six months for response. If you wish your materials returned to you, please include an appropriate SASE.

New South Play Festival Script Submission Policy

NEW SOUTH FESTIVAL MISSION: The New South for the New Century Festival is dedicated to producing and developing work that gives voice to issues facing the contemporary South.

The festival's mission is to produce and/or workshop new material that addresses issues facing the contemporary South.

The submission guidelines are as follows:

If you have one full-length play you would like to submit for consideration, please send it to us at our mailing address.

If you have more than one full-length piece you would like considered, please send us samples of all the work you would like considered, as well as a SAS envelope or postcard so that we can let you know which, if any, plays we would like to see in their entirety.

Also, it is VERY important that you mark all materials being submitted for the festival as "NEW SOUTH SUBMISSION". Write this phrase in an obvious way on the front of the envelope, somewhere on the cover letter, and somewhere on the title page of the script or sample. (It's important to note that we do not accept submissions via e-mail) We will reply to you as soon as possible regarding your submission.

Expect at least a 6-month response period.

The Literary Department accepts new play submissions only from literary agents and does not accept unsolicited plays or request plays based upon reading synopses. The Guthrie Theater commissions, develops and produces new work, and is interested in new full-length plays, as well as adaptations and translations of classical plays.
