News flash: theatre world still sexist

Why Female Directors Are Broadway's Smallest
Lousy title, interesting article in the form of interviews with New York theatre movers and shakers.
Especially interesting to playwrights is Robyn Goodman's comment:

Perhaps we should be asking why female playwrights are still marginalized and why their plays are considered to be gender specific while men's plays are considered to be universal. Or maybe we should ask why, when women are the predominant ticket buyers, there is only one female first-string critic in New York.

Solo Female performance piece wanted

Howling Moon Cab Company is looking for a 30-40 minute solo performance piece by a NYC-based female author/performer, to round out an evening. The piece should have strong narrative and dramatic qualities, though it may be surreal, dark, or fanciful. Since it will be companion to a work set in the south, we will give first consideration to works with an urban setting. There will be six performances at a venue in the Hamptons, with the possibility of one or two more in New York City. Dates will be set once we have the additional content needed. The piece preferably will not have been performed in New York City in the last six months. The performer will share in the proceeds, and Howling Moon will provide transportation from NYC to the Hamptons and accomodations there. Please email a synopsis, small photograph files, press or other relevant materials to Jonathan Wallace at jw@bway.net (no one megabyte and up submissions please; instead inquire for snail mail address).

Musical Submission Policy
TADA! offers original musical theater productions three times a year, a unique year-round Resident Youth Ensemble composed of 40-50 NYC kids ages 8-18, renowned education programs and theater classes in schools and at TADA!, taught by professional teaching artists.

Over the past 19 years, TADA!--a not-for-profit, 501(c)3, youth theater--has created a unique niche in the New York City theater community: children working with professional directors, playwrights, composers, lyricists, choreographers and designers on original musicals. TADA!'s high quality, original works reach children on an emotional, intellectual and intuitive level because performances are by children, about children and for children. TADA! does not merely "cultivate" a future audience for the theater--children become enthusiastic theatergoers in the space of one show.

TADA! musicals highlight the joy of childhood, the magic of the theater and the endless possibilities of youth. A TADA! musical is truly a rare and special experience; not at all your typical children's theater piece. TADA's musicals are commissioned for our Resident Youth Ensemble, ages 8 to 18. Since children and teenagers are at the center of what we do both on stage and off, our musicals entertain and inspire without being condescending or childish.

Commissions
TADA! is always looking for new writers to work with and maintain an "open-door" policy towards new and exciting work and ideas. If you are interested in writing a commissioned musical for TADA!, please see below for submission guidelines. Please note: TADA! does not generally produce already completed or previously produced works.

Submit the following:
A brief summary of the play (including number of child, teen, and adult characters and a brief technical summary of the piece i.e. set, costumes, etc.),10-pages from the script , a CD or cassette tape with songs from the score and a copy of two songs of the actual score. Once your material is submitted it will take anywhere from 2 to 3 months to evaluate. If we are interested in your work we will mail you a letter requesting the entire script and score. (See the guidelines below.)

If you have a musical or an idea that you think would be perfect for TADA! the guidelines are as follows:

Scripts based on original ideas are highly encouraged.
Scripts must be unproduced and unpublished.
All musicals must be an hour-long one act for family audiences with a strong story and plotline.
Musicals must be written for a varied age-range. Cast must be made up primarily of character ages 8-18. Age specific shows written for teenagers are also allowed.
Plays with animals and non-human characters are highly discouraged.
Mail all materials to:

Jim Colleran, Ensemble Manager/Resident Musical Director

15 West 28th Street,3rd Floor
New York, New York 10001
