2006 DNA Festival of Very, Very, Very Short Plays & Films

For the 2006 DNA Festival of Very, Very, Very Short Plays & Films A Co-Production of IDAHO REPERTORY THEATRE & THE UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE & FILM

Founded in 2003 by Robert Caisley, Head of the new MFA in Dramatic Writing emphasis at the University of Idaho, the DNA Festival has produced the World Premiere’s of 99 one-page plays of writers from across the country and overseas. Designed to encourage the work of both new and emerging writers, and create an exciting and unique theatrical experience for audiences, the festival features one-page scripts ranging in style from single character comic monologues to multiple character dramas, abstract and highly stylized pieces to realism, contemporary issues to historical events. Past festivals have also seen submissions of short plays written in languages other than English.

The theme for DNA: 2006 will be simply “The Airport Plays.” All plays must be set in or around an airport, or be related in a direct or indirect way to airports or air travel. Arrivals and departures, farewells and reunions -- we’re interested producing scripts that examine the subject in all of its facets. We hope that writers, whether writing in a comic or dramatic vein, will tackle the topic in unique and innovative ways -- treating the idea of “airports” not simply as a specific locale, but also metaphorically.

DNA SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
- Plays must be no longer than one-page in length; all dialogue and stage directions must be contained on one side of a standard 8.5 X 11 sheet of paper;
- We would prefer to produce plays that have not have been previously produced, but will consider second productions and productions of plays that have received developmental readings (please indicate development and production history;)
- The plays must not have been published in any form;
- Maximum of 4 characters per script;
- Maximum of 5 entries per writer;
- Plays must address, directly or indirectly, the festival theme of "The Airport Plays”
- Plays can either be comic or dramatic, in any genre or style;
- Plays must have extremely limited production/staging demands, as the festival will be produced "without decor;”
- Entries must be submitted via email as an attachment in either Word.doc or .pdf format (and should include the author’s name, address, phone number and a very brief bio in the body of the email; the subject line of the email should read as follows Re: "author’s last name, first initial/DNA2006" Eg: Caisley,R/DNA2006;
- All entries should also include a cover-page (in the same file as the script itself) which includes the title of the piece, the author’s name, address, phone number, and email address;
- Multiple scripts can be sent in the same email;

- Deadline for submissions: we have an OPEN submission window,
which is EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY and continues until the producer has accepted approx 20 - 25 plays for production OR January 15th, 2006, whichever comes first.
- Selected plays will be posted on our website once they have
been accepted for production (www.uitheatre.com)

SUBMIT SCRIPTS VIA EMAIL TO:

Blue Box Productions wants plays in a bar

Blue Box ...
... is now accepting submissions for its Sticky series, a one-night only production, featuring 10-minute plays set in a bar. Past Stickies have been performed at Bar Noir (Philadelphia), Bowery Poetry Club (New York), and is currently performed semi-monthly at Belly, on New York's Lower East Side

There is no stage. The plays are performed organically, all around the bar. Past plays have taken place with characters on bar stools, at tables, at separate tables, fighting (with fists and everything), with characters entering and leaving bathrooms, etc., so you get the idea. Aside from the obvious restriction of the bar location, plays should have no more than three characters

For a history of the series, visit their website at http://www.blueboxproductions.net/

They'll accept submissions via email attachment at blueboxworld@mac.com

Thanks Reagan & Karen

Thanks to REAGAN WILSON for running the October 5 NYCPlaywrights meeting, and KAREN SWEENEY for running the Ocrober 12 NYCPlaywrights meeting.

MTG New Play Development seeks submissions

MTG New Play Development: Mission Statement
“The moments of magic,” writes Tony Kushner in his Playwright’s Notes to Angels in America, “…are to be fully realized, as bits of theatrical illusion—which means it’s OK if the wires show, and maybe it’s good if they do, but at the same time the magic should be thoroughly amazing.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves, for at the core of Millennium Talent Group’s vision is the theatrical.

It is in this spirit of simultaneous seduction and pulling back the curtain that MTG proudly unveils its new play development program. Located in SoHo, MTG is inspired by a view of downtown NYC as a site of playful experimentation. As such, MTG embraces new works that abuse preconceptions and cliché with innovative form and content. MTG seeks the writer who understands the visible possibilities of the stage --and is willing to break them. In sum, MTG is a theatre committed to the playwright who challenges the theatre to grow.

Script Submission Guidelines:

Turnip Theatre Company's 12th ANNUAL NEW YORK CITY 15 MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL

12th ANNUAL NEW YORK CITY 15 MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL GUIDELINES
Turnip Theatre Company in association with American Globe Theatre will accept submissions for the 12th Annual New York City 15-Minute Play Festival through December 15, 2005. This popular short play competition will be presented at American Globe’s 75 seat theatre on West 46th Street in the heart of Times Square April 24 – May 6, 2006. Turnip Theatre Company established The 15-Minute Play Festival in 1995 to present audiences with short, well-crafted plays while at the same time offering a professional venue for theater artists. American Globe Theatre became a Festival co-presenter in 2001. Over the past 11 years more than 300 new short plays have been presented, with many going on to subsequent productions and several to publication. Offoffonline.com called the Festival the highlight of the Off-off Broadway season (May 2004).

Each year approximately 32 to 35 original short plays are selected from submissions from all over the United States and several foreign countries. Four to five plays are presented each of the first seven evenings of the semi-finals with one play chosen each night to move on to the finals and two additional performances. Finalists compete for $100 cash prizes for Best Play, Best Direction, Best Performance, and Audience Favorite. Finalists are also eligible for The Alan Minieri Memorial Playwriting Award in honor of Turnip Theatre Company’s late Co-Artistic Director who died of cancer in 1997. The $300 Minieri Award is presented to a playwright whose work challenges convention in both content and form. Each semi-finalist whose work is presented in the Festival receives a $25 royalty.
• Playwrights and/or their representatives are responsible for the production of their play including casting, rehearsals, props, etc. The Festival presenters provide basic set pieces and lighting, sound equipment, and production staff.
• Plays are selected solely on the script submitted. Please do not include a playwright resume or play production history. Plays should have a beginning, middle, and end (though not necessarily in that order). Plays that create a unique world, are unpredictable, and can stand alone without complex production values are favored by the presenters. Monologues and published plays will not be considered.
• Submissions must be typed in play script format and be no more than 15 pages and in a font size no smaller than 12 point Times Roman or Courier/Courier New. Only plays with a running time of 15 minutes or less are eligible.
• Only one submission per writer will be accepted. If several plays are submitted by a single author, only one will be chosen at random to be read by the play reading committee.
• Submissions should be sent by regular mail to 15 Minute Play Festival, c/o American Globe Theatre, 145 W. 46th Street, New York, NY 10036. Submissions are not accepted by email, fax, or express/overnight mail. Submissions must be postmarked by December 15, 2006. Playwrights whose plays are selected will be notified in mid-February 2006. Plays will not be returned, so please do not send a return envelope.
• There will be a mandatory meeting for all playwrights or their representatives in March and a production meeting for all participating artists in April 2006.
• Visit the American Globe website at www.americanglobe.org for additional information.
• A SIGNED COPY OF THESE GUIDELINES MUST BE RETURNED WITH YOUR PLAY TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION.
