CALL FOR SCRIPTS - PLAYWORKS 2006

The Playwright’s Program of The Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) is accepting submissions of new plays for the eighth annual PlayWorks event to be held during the ATHE Conference in Chicago, August 3-6.

PlayWorks 2006 is a forum for exposure and support of new work and a means to foster the artistic life of theatre faculty and other practicing playwrights who can benefit from an intense collaborative process. The jury-selected play will be dramaturged and rehearsed by an experienced performance team, and then presented as a staged reading and audience response event. These events have proved to be conference highlights.

Full-length (no more than 85 pages of text) or one-act plays may be submitted. *Scripts are to be single-sided and in 12-point font, standard Samuel French format. They can be of any style that lends itself to an effective reading or physical presentation that does not require technical enhancement.

Previously produced plays are not eligible. The selected playwright must agree to attend the 2006 conference at his or her own expense and to take part in the entire rehearsal process. (Support may be available to offset the conference registration fee.)

Submission requirements (all elements must be included to receive consideration):
2 bound copies of script with title/authors page paper-clipped to the top cover (author's name must not appear anywhere else on the script)
SASP for acknowledging our receipt of the scripts
SASE (business-size) for receiving the results of the entry
Letter indicating willingness to attend the 2006 conference and to be part of the rehearsal process.
Other support materials are not necessary as the script is our sole basis for selection.

Unfortunately, we are not able to return scripts.

Complete packets must be postmarked by January 17, 2006, and should be sent to:

CALL FOR PHYSICAL THEATRE PARTICIPANTS– PLAYWORKS 2006

The Playwright’s Program of The Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) is accepting applications for participation in the Physical Theatre Project for the eighth annual PlayWorks event to be held during the ATHE Conference in Chicago, August 3-6. PlayWorks 2006 is a forum for exposure and support of new work and is also devoted to an on-going exploration in play development and performance methodology. This year, the Physical Theatre Project is a joint venture of the Playwrights Program and the Association for Theatre Movement Educators. There will be two components. Members of collaborative team one will develop a movement-based piece under the leadership of Katharine Noon (Loyola Marymount University), Sonia Norris (University of Windsor), and Pamela Turner (multiShades.atlanta). Members of collaborative team two will address movement elements in a new play script by Macaela Carder (Bowling Green State University). Most of the development work will be conducted on-site at the 2006 conference, with working demonstration pieces presented as an all-conference event.
Applications are now being accepted for movement specialists and actors familiar with physical-based ensemble work. Note that the selected team members must agree to attend the 2006 conference at their own expense and to take part in the collaborative rehearsal process. (Support may be available to offset the conference registration fee.) Prospective participants must submit a letter, (1) indicating their particular area of expertise and (2) relating their relevant experience and training in physical-based theatre. The letter must also include (3) a statement indicating willingness to attend the 2006 conference and to attend work sessions/rehearsals, and (4) full contact information. Please enclose a SASE for receiving a response to the application. Applications must be received by January 20, 2006, and should be sent to:

Columbus Fringe Festival

Columbus Fringe Festival Submission Guidelines All Submissions should be sent to:
MadLab
ATTN: CFF
105 North Grant Avenue
Columbus, Ohio, 43215
614.470.2333
EMAIL CONTACT: andy@madlab.net

To maximize your chance of selection, please read all guidelines carefully before submitting.

The CFF is a juried festival.

The Columbus Fringe Festival 2006 will take place May 4-27.

Submissions must arrive no later than January 15, 2006.

Submissions will be chosen and applicants informed if her/his piece was chosen on January 31, 2006.

If you are unable to produce your own work and would like MadLab to produce it for you, please visit http://www.madlab.net/tr2006guide.html.

There are five categories for production submission:
theatre/musicals, dance, music, film, visual art (see http://www.madlab.net/cff/submittal.htm for categories other than theatre)

Theatre/Musical Submissions
1) As a proponent of original work, MadLab will only be accepting original productions. What does this mean? In a nutshell, it means that if you have to pay someone (like a publisher of some kind) to produce this show, we will not accept it. The spirit and intention of a festival of this kind is to be a vehicle for new and exciting work.

2) Scripts should run at least 40 minutes in length.
Due to the need to charge a standard admission price for each show script must be at least this length to ensure the audience's dollar value.

3) Due to the number of productions that will be presented throughout the run of the festival, an ideal CFF script will have minimal set and technical requirements. This does not mean writers should restrict themselves or their imaginations. But be aware that, all things being equal in terms of script quality, the script with fewer or less stringent requirements will probably win the day. PLEASE DO NOT IN ANY WAY THINK THIS MEANS YOU MUST SUBMIT MINIMALIST WORK. Just be aware that you may need to make compromises in order to accommodate all the shows of the festival.

4) You may submit multiple scripts.

5) YOU MUST EMAIL YOUR SCRIPT TO US. IF EMAILING IS ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE FOR YOU, PLEASE CALL US AT
614.470.2333 SO WE CAN MAKE ALTERNATE ARRANGEMENTS.

EMAIL PROTOCOL: Please send your script attached as a Microsoft Word document. SCRIPTS SHOULD BE EMAILED TO ANDY@MADLAB.NET. PLEASE PUT "COLUMBUS FRINGE FESTIVAL SUBMISSION" AS THE SUBJECT LINE IF "COLUMBUS FRINGE FESTIVAL SUBMISSION" IS NOT YOUR SUBJECT LINE, YOUR SUBMISSION MAY NOT BE RECEIVED. All submissions will receive a reply email to ensure that your submission was received.

6) Thanks for your interest, good luck with your submission, and regardless of the outcome here, be sure to keep producing new work.

Theatre Roulette wants script submissions

Theatre Roulette 2006 Submission Guidelines as part of The Columbus Fringe Festival.

To maximize your chance of selection, please read all guidelines carefully before submitting.

All Submissions should be sent to:
andy@madlab.net
If you do not have email, please call 470-2333 to set up different arrangements.

Theatre Roulette is a juried festival

If you are planning to submit to the Theatre Roulette portion of The Columbus Fringe Festival, this means that you are expecting MadLab to produce your play for you. If you wish to produce your play yourself, please go to www.columbusfringefestival.com.

Theatre Roulette 2006 will take place as part of the 2nd Annual Columbus Fringe Festival May 4-27.

Submissions must arrive no later than December 2, 2005.

Submissions will be chosen and applicants informed if her/his piece was chosen on January 2, 2006.

If you script is selected, you must have a director chosen and submitted for MadLab approval by January 13. If a director is not chosen by January 13, MadLab reserves the right to work with the applicant to find/choose a director for his/her work.

All applicants should keep January 21 & 22 open as potential dates for viewing auditions if your script is selected. All directors are strongly encouraged to attend auditions.

1) Scripts should be between five minutes and forty-five minutes in length. Scripts of greater lengths will be considered, but due to time constraints it is unlikely that unsolicited full-length plays will be selected for the festival, unless you are a Nobel or Pulitzer Prize winning writer, in which case your script will automatically be accepted for production as long as you waive your standard royalty, which would probably be more than the budget for the entire festival. If you are not sure whether or not you have won a Nobel or Pulitzer Prize, please find out through the glory of the world wide web and let us know.

2) Due to the number of plays that will be presented each night, an ideal Theatre Roulette script will have minimal set and technical requirements. Just be aware that you may need to make compromises in order to accommodate all the shows of the festival; welcome to the world of non-profit theatre. MadLab does have video and audio editing capabilities on-site, as well as video projection capabilities for the run of Theatre Roulette. MadLab cannot, however, guarantee that MadLab staff will be able to edit media for your show.
If you are under the impression that a video toaster is good for baking bagels or that a mouse is something that should be screamed at and stomped on, please do not have any hard feelings if we don't let you anywhere near our gear ya Luddite.

3) You may submit multiple scripts, but please indicate the order in which your submitted scripts should be read.

4) Script submissions WILL NOT be returned to the applicant; MadLab will destroy all evidence of your creative instincts upon a funeral pyre at an undisclosed location in order to protect both the innocent and the guilty. Ashes will not be returned to you unless you purchase a commemorative urn from MadLab at the bargain basement price of $99.95.

PLEASE PUT "THEATRE ROULETTE SUBMISSION" AS THE SUBJECT LINE. IF "THEATRE ROULETTE SUBMISSION" IS NOT YOUR SUBJECT LINE, YOUR SUBMISSION MAY NOT BE RECEIVED. All submissions will receive a reply email to ensure that your submission was received.

6) Thanks for your interest, good luck with your submission, and regardless of the outcome here, be sure to keep producing new work.

Righteous observation from The New Yorker

From Anthony Lane's review of the movie version of PROOF:

Hope Davis... plays Claire, Catherine’s nonabnormal sister, and we are encouraged, naturally, to despise her for that normality. (It’s almost a definition of highbrow modern theatre: middle-class people pay to sit for three hours and have their lives exposed and scarified. Everybody wins: the playwright goes home convinced that he has changed their raison d’être, and they go out to dinner perfectly content that he hasn’t.) Claire flies in from New York, where, unlike Catherine, she has (boo!) a job, and (hiss!) a fiancé, and (avaunt thee, Satan!) nice clothes.

Senior Barn Players want scripts

The Senior Barn Players...
... are looking for scripts for their 2006-7 season. For more than 28 years they have entertained audiences throughout the greater Kansas City area. The theatre, over 120 members strong, features its main performing group plus a children's theatre wing, a play reading circle and a group of singers and dancers called The Entertainers. The non-profit company highlights the work of performers who are between the ages of 55 and 90

The company selects five plays each year and tours them throughout the area in an October to May season. They perform for 13,000+ older audience members in churches, retirement centers, businesses, clubs, civic organizations, and others. Each play is performed numerous times, sometimes up to 30 times a season

They are looking for -

a.. Plays that feature no more than 5 characters in roles that are appropriate for mature performers. Since they tour, the cast must fit in one car!
b.. Plays with more roles for women than men
c.. Scripts that run 30 minutes long in a one act format
d.. Comedies
e.. Plays with minimal technical requirements. All props must fit in the trunk of a car
f.. Plays must be easy to stage in a wide variety of locations, especially in smaller, non-theatrical spaces
g.. All scripts are memorized so lines should flow logically and be easy to recall
h.. Plays must reflect the sensibilities of older audience members and performers
i.. Topics do not need to be senior based. Universal situations, like those that take place in laundromats, airports, for example, are successful with the company

For royalty, the group pays $15.00 for the first performance and $10.00 for each one thereafter. Royalty checks are mailed monthly

Plays will be read upon receipt with selections finalized in Spring 2006

Send scripts in hard copy to -
