Each applicant must be a composer/lyricist or composer/lyricist team wishing to create work for the musical theatre, and must not yet have achieved significant commercial success.

Application Materials:

A CD, flash drive, or electronic file of up to four songs from one or more musical theatre pieces, with typewritten lyrics and a description of the dramatic context for each song; and
A completed application form.

We will code the applications as they arrive. Because all submissions will be reviewed blind, please do not place name(s) of writer(s) on the CD, flash drive, electronic file names, lyric sheets, or description of dramatic context. Only musical theatre work will be considered. Please do not submit live recordings with any audience sound. The applicant(s) must have written all the songs included in the submission. For example, a composer cannot submit one song with her own lyrics, and a second song with lyrics by another writer. No individual may appear on more than one application. You cannot apply as an individual and again as part of a team, or as part of more than one songwriting team.

Ivoryton Playhouse Women Playwrights Initiative 2020


Fourth annual Women Playwrights Initiative: PASSION POWER PROSE 2020.
Our mission is to Inspire, Empower, Validate, and Celebrate women playwrights.
Please read the submission policy carefully
Starting June 15, 2019 women playwrights are invited to submit one-act plays written solely by women. Scripts must be in standard Samuel French playwriting format: 12 point font, character name centered, 1” margin all around. Email scripts to Laura Copland laurac@ivorytonplayhouse.org.

We are specifically looking for TWO ten-fifteen minute plays, and TWO longer plays up to one hour—approximately 50 pages. Plays running longer than one hour will not be considered. Each play will have one staged reading on either Saturday afternoon or Saturday evening on February 22, 2020.
No one-person plays or musicals will be accepted.

Only one submission per playwright will be accepted. Scripts will not be returned.

Submissions are limited to the first 150 scripts received. No play will be accepted before June 15.

These are blind submissions. The title page must include ONLY the name of the play, the characters, and the setting. DO NOT include a synopsis. A separate file is required with the playwright’s name, email address, mailing address, telephone number, and the name of the submitted play. Please also include a resume as a separate file and NOT included in the PDF file of the play.

The call is open from June 15 to August 15, 2019 OR until we receive 150 plays

Playwrights will be notified if their play was received after receipt of 150 plays or the deadline and thus, not considered.

Submissions will be acknowledged by email. Playwrights will be notified in the fall of 2019 by email if their play is selected. Playwrights whose plays were not selected will also be notified.
All ethnicities and all ages are strongly encouraged to apply.

The four selected playwrights will be invited to stay for the week of workshopping beginning the arrival day, Sunday, February 16, 2020 through to the staged readings on Saturday February 22, (performance inclement weather date and/or departure day on Sunday, February 23, 2020.)

The WPI is a workshop and playwrights are encouraged and should be prepared to work on their play, including rewrites, as needed.

Stipend: PLAYWRIGHTS: $500, plus travel from your nearest airport or train station to Ivoryton, CT on Sunday, February 16, 2020 and from Ivoryton on Sunday, February 23, 2020. Housing is provided.

DIRECTORS: The WPI also seeks resumes from women directors. Stipend: $300 and housing is provided, if needed. All ethnicities and ages strongly encouraged to apply.

The New York New Works Theatre Festival

The New York New Works Theatre Festival has aggregated  leaders in the television and theatre communities who donate their time to review the leading writers of tomorrow.  Our main objective is to have a fabulous time celebrating the arts.

Performing in the heart of Times Square's celebrated theatre district (2017 took place at the Duke Theatre / 2018 staged on 42nd Street's Theatre Row), NYNW has made a point of selecting  pieces that are considered of the upper echelon of talent that the industry has to offer; participants range from those still in school, to television celebrities, to Broadway stars, to Broadway revivals.  All styles are represented i.e. plays, musicals, and comedies.  Several of our applicants have even adapted screenplays for the stage.

Performance lengths are to be between 10 and 26 minutes as the feedback has been that investors can tell within moments if it is a piece of work that they wish to participate in and appreciate being able to see several investment worthy performances in one evening.  Many past performances are full length in nature however, were abbreviated for this showcase; many are one acts.

Our success page speaks for itself and represents the relationships that have developed.

 We do not make promises, however, several shows have seen success.  Please identify in your application interesting, "story worthy" notes that make your submission special.

Centaur Theatre Wildside Festival (Montreal Canada)

Welcome to Centaur’s WILDSIDE submission process! We are looking for the most exciting and audacious artists to come and play with us in Montreal for the hottest two weeks in Winter (January 7-20, 2020). Every theatrical form is welcome. Multidisciplinary works and shows with more than one theatrical form are encouraged.

Due to the repertory schedule of the Festival, shows must not exceed 60 minutes running time. Nightly setup time prior to performance must not exceed 30 minutes. Takedown time post performance must not exceed 15 minutes. Artists accepted to the Festival must be available for the entire two weeks duration.

USC Bedrosian Center/Red Nation Celebration Institute seeks plays by indigenous authors

USC Bedrosian Center/Red Nation Celebration Institute is accepting submissions of full length plays written by American Indian/Indigenous authors.

Winners from outside of Los Angeles will receive travel and accommodations to USC in November 2019 to workshop their script with professional actors, director, and dramaturge.

This call for submission supports our mission to give opportunities for Native American and non-Native students to learn, collaborate, study, and amplify the stories of Indigenous peoples. We are offering a call for original scripts from Indigenous playwrights.

The selected play will be featured in the opening ceremonies of the 24th Annual Red National International Film Festival at the USC Bedrosian Center in November 2019. Travel and accommodation will be provided to playwrights outside of the Los Angeles area.

Plays with a message are preferred, though there is no preference of genre. There is no fee to enter a submission, only one submission per person.

Wordsmyth is now accepting play submissions for the 2020 New Play Reading Series

Wordsmyth Theater (Houston TX) is now accepting one-act or two-act play submissions for our New Play Reading Series for 2020. Six plays will be selected, with one slot reserved for a Houston, TX playwright and another slot reserved for a bilingual play — any language. Each selected playwright will be paired with a director and cast. The play will then be read in front of an audience and the audience will be invited to stay after for a moderated discussion of the play. We do expect the playwright to be in attendance for the reading.

Submissions must meet the following criteria:
1. Play must not have been produced.
2. Play must not have had a public reading in the Houston area.
3. Submission must be received on or before midnight July 2, 2019.
4. Submission must be a minimum of 40 pages long and have a minimum run time of 40 minutes.
5. Submission must be in .pdf format.
6. There should be no playwright identifiers anywhere on the script. Playwright info should be in a separate file that accompanies the script.
7. Only one play per playwright per submission period.
8. No musicals, children’s plays, or one-person plays.

OBJECT MOVEMENT PUPPETRY RESIDENCY & FESTIVAL

OBJECT MOVEMENT is a curated festival and developmental residency for puppeteers and object theater artists. Object Movement supports the development new work and advances existing works-in-progress that address eternal human questions and the urgent challenges of our society today through puppetry and object theater, culminating in a festival of 15-20 minute performances. Participants meet weekly as a group to share the progress of their pieces and offer peer feedback. The group is moderated by a curatorial team of puppetry artists and producers. Group meetings are on Tuesday evenings from September 2019 to March 2019, culminating in a spring festival of performances.

Object Movement is curated by Maiko Kikuchi, Rowan Magee, and Justin Perkins.

Workshop meetings will take place weekly at 6:30-9:00 PM on Tuesdays at The Center at West Park on the Upper West Side. Participants will be expected to commit to the weekly schedule with a minimal number of absences. All residency meeting dates: September 10, 17, and 24; October 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29; November 5, 12, 19, and 26; December 3, 10, and 17; January 7, 14, 21, and 28; February 4, 11, 18, and 25; March 3, 10, and 17; April 7.

Festival performances will be in the Center’s Balcony Theater on March 27-29 and April 3-5, 2020. Each participant will have three total performances on one of the two weekends. Each artist will have up 20 minutes to show either a completed short work or a selection of a full-length piece.

Participants will receive up to 40 hours of free rehearsal space at the Center during the residency. Free rehearsal hours may be used in the Chapel between 10am and 6pm, Monday-Saturday and must be reserved in advance.

Artist Stipend

All participants will receive a stipend of $250 at the residency to offset materials costs and other expenses.

Festival Info

The Object Movement 2020 Festival will take place over two weekends, with Program A running Friday, March 27 through Sunday, March 29 and Program B running Friday, April 3 through Sunday, April 5. Participants will be scheduled in Program A or B by January 2020 based on performer availability. Each piece in the festival will get one full day in the theater for tech and dress rehearsal.

The Center will provide front of house and technical staff for the festival, including a box office manager, house manager, technical director, and production stage manager. Equipment including a lighting rep plot and PA sound system will also be provided. All tickets will be $20 and sold through the Center’s website.

Print and digital marketing materials, including posters and Facebook pages, will be created by the Center. The Center will host a promo photo shoot in advance of the festival, and provide a photographer for production stills.

Application Information

Artists of all ages, experience levels, and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Applications should be for a specific project, either a new piece or an existing work in progress to be developed further. Please upload a one-page text description and one-page image/illustration of the project you would like to develop and perform during the residency and festival.

Your text description should include:

a summary of the story you are telling or experience you hope to share

the style of puppetry or object theater used in the project

the social and/or aesthetic questions you hope to explore with the project

why puppetry or object theater is essential to addressing these questions and serving the intention of the project

the length of the completed piece as you envision it

when, where, and how much of the material you have already created and shared

There is no submission fee for Cimientos.
Submissions lacking any of the following guidelines will not be considered.
  1. Submission will only be accepted through the online form.  See link below (only visible in month of June.)
  2. Submissions must be the author's own work. The piece shall be free from copyright restrictions and the author agrees to hold IATI Theater and directors free and harmless from all copyright claims.
  3. The playwright must commit to be present on the staged reading performance of his/her work.
  4. The playwright must commit to be present on the PPP (Pal Playwrights Panel) assigned to his/her work.
  5. This program is open to authors from anywhere in the world with original works in English or Spanish who are interested in a New York audience feedback. However, because of the PPP (Pal Playwrights Panel), every playwright must be present to take part in the monthly meetings or commit to presenting feedback electronically or in written form on the dates of the PPP's and with no delay.
  6. Only one play may be submitted per playwright, per season.
  7. Submissions must not exceed 90 minutes in length.
  8. The play must require 5 actors or less.  Plays that have more than 5 actors and do not provide a clear and stageable doubling explanation will not be reviewed. If doubling is possible, it must be expressed clearly on the online form.
  9. The submission must be a completed full-length play that has not previously been produced in any setting. If the play has undergone a workshop, staged reading or development of any kind, the playwright must inform IATI Theater of the specifics on the online form.
  10. The author’s name(s) should be nowhere within the script, any authorship information must not be visible in the play document.  Scripts will be read ‘blind’.
  11. Submissions for the 2020 Season will only be accepted from June 1 to June 30, 2019.

NuBox theater seeks 10 to 20 minute plays

NuBox theater is seeking 10 to 20 minute plays that are centered around the importance of mental health and the reality of coping with a mental illness.

The goal is to bring more awareness to mental health and to educate people on mental illnesses.

This is going to be a full production in New York City.

Southeast Texas Festival of New Plays

Beaumont Community Players (BCP) is announcing a festival of new works set for its inaugural presentation in August. The Southeast Texas Festival of New Plays is slated for the week of August 12th through August 18th and will feature staged readings of four previously unpublished plays. Other activities of the festival week will include a Thursday night panel discussion with the authors and other industry professionals and talkbacks with the audience after each reading. Cost for the Festival is $15 for the week or $5 per reading and BCP subscribers’ are admitted to all events free of charge.

Submissions are now being accepted for full-length or one act (non-musical) plays and the four participants will be chosen July 1st. Each play will receive a weeks’ worth of rehearsal with a director, dramaturg and a company of BCP actors culminating in a staged reading of the play over the closing weekend of the festival. Authors are encouraged to attend the week’s rehearsals and a small stipend will be paid to each chosen playwright.

The Orange Players Acting Up! 2019 seeks 10-minute plays

The Orange Players (Orange Connecticut) will be hosting Acting Up! 2019, an evening of 10 ten-minute one act plays for unpublished works on Friday, October 25 and Saturday, October 26, 2019. If you are an author of an unpublished one act, we would love to work with you.

Scripts should be sent via email to TheOrangePlayers@gmail.com no later than June 30, 2019 and meet the following criteria:

• Works must be no longer than 10 minutes when performed.
• Works must consist of 2 characters or more.
• Works must be in script format.
• Works must be unpublished.
• Set pieces needed for each work must be relatively small in size – pieces that can be moved by 1 or 2 people at the most.
• Playwright must be 16 years of age or older.
• Each playwright may send up to 3 script submissions, no more than 3.
• Works must be submitted no later than June 30, 2019.

PLAYWRIGHT/DIRECTOR MEET AND GREET
• The week of August 26, 2019 a meet and greet for Directors and Playwrights will be scheduled.
• Each author will have an opportunity to speak about their play for a few minutes.

• All names will go into a hat and each director will pull out a selection and assigned to a one act.
• The directors will have 20 minutes (if needed) to swap their assigned one act with another director
            o Each director must agree to the swap

• Assigned directors and authors will have a chance to chat a bit, exchange info.

AUDITIONS
• Open auditions will be held for two nights on Tuesday, September 3 and Wednesday, September 4 at High Plains Community Center (HPCC). All performances and tech week will be held at HPCC, 525 Orange Center Rd., Orange, CT, 06477.
• Playwrights may attend if they wish.
• Playwrights may not audition for their own works.

REHEARSALS
• Orange Players will provide one copy of the script to each actor and director in the one act assigned.

TECHNICAL
• Tech Rehearsal will be held October 21, 22, 23 with Dress Rehearsal on Thursday, October 24, all at 7:00 PM
• Playwrights, directors and cast will provide their own props and costuming.
• Set pieces will be kept to a minimum.
• Set pieces must be relatively small in size – pieces that can be moved by 1 or 2 people at the most.
• There will be no special lighting for individual one acts.
• Overhead hanging microphones will be used during the performances.
• No body mics will be utilized during the performances.

Onion Man Productions 10th Anniversary Harvest show of 10-minute plays

Onion Man Productions is accepting submissions for its 10th Anniversary Harvest show of 10-minute plays to be produced in October 2019.

This year’s show will celebrate Onion Man’s past, embrace our present situation, and look forward to our future.  While we don’t have a specific theme for this year’s show, we are seeking plays that deal with letting go of the past, new beginnings and/or “rising from the ashes.”

Submissions should contain 2-4 characters (6 maximum), simple set and prop requirements (able to tour), and provide opportunity for diverse casting.

Adult language and content is permitted as long as it is relevant to the story and not simply utilized to be “edgy.”

Submissions cannot be previously produced in the Atlanta Metro Area.

Lotus Lee Children’s Play Initiative

The Children’s Play Initiative aims to highlight new works that inspire and engage children audience. Previously, we have showcased numerous successful productions in the cultural exchange between China and the United States which stands as the basis for the Lotus Lee Foundation. Winning entries will display a distinct understanding of the unlimited possibilities of theatre through compelling and dynamic stories with intriguing plots, fascinating characters and an informed global perspective.

Submission Rules

There is no entry fee. Please follow these guidelines in preparing your manuscript:

This contest is restricted to only plays written in the English language.

Submissions must be original, unpublished full-length plays written in English. Translations and adaptations are not accepted.

Plays that have been professionally produced or published are not eligible. Only plays that have had a workshop, reading, or non-professional production or that have been published as an actor’s edition will be considered.

Plays may not be under option, commissioned, or scheduled for professional production or publication at the time of submission.

Plays must be typed/word-processed, page-numbered, and in professional play format.

The Lotus Lee Foundation reserves the right to reject any manuscript for any reason.

The Lotus Lee Foundation reserves the right of the judge to not choose a winner for any given year of the competition and also reserves the right to determine the ineligibility of a winner, in keeping with the spirit of the competition, and based upon the accomplishments of the author.

Electronic submissions for the 2019 competition must be submitted no later than 11:59PM EST on July 1, 2019. You will receive a confirmation of your successful submission within two business days.

The Playwrights Program is an annual opportunity intended to help new and compelling full-length plays come to the attention of the greater public.

Each year DVRF selects one previously unproduced play to receive an intensive development in New York City. This period is structured in dialogue with the playwright to best accommodate their needs and artistic goals for the piece. The program culminates in presentations to invited audiences featuring producers, directors, and other industry professionals.

Rules and Guidelines for Submission
We are seeking full-length plays only. While there is no strict minimum for length we suggest all submissions be at least 30 pages long.

Submissions must be in English.

No play that has previously had a full, public production is eligible for selection. Submissions that have been developed previously or are/were under option must be accompanied by a brief summary of their developmental history.

Please only one submission per playwright/playwriting team.

The play must be original or based on material which the author previously was afforded the rights to.

Playwrights must be residents of the United States and at least 18 years of age.

This program is intended only for playwrights who will be able to attend at least a 1-2 week-long workshop and presentation in New York City in March/April of 2020. DVRF will do its best to schedule according to the selected playwright's availability. The selected playwright must be prepared to bear any lodging and travel expenses incurred while participating in the program. Please note we cannot compensate for time taken off from work.

Submissions are due Monday, June 24th at 11:59PM.

CRITERIA FOR SUBMISSIONS

  • submitted plays should be previously unproduced (we will consider plays that have had readings before but are still in development)
  • plays should have a cast size of 2-8

  • we will only accept one submission per writer each year
  • we are interested in plays from playwrights based in Ireland, and Irish playwrights around the world
  • we ask that the writers of the chosen plays attend the reading of their play towards its further development and to be present for a post-reading Q&A with the audience
  • there is no fee for submissions
  • while we are open to all styles and subjects, we do have a preference for narrative and character-driven stories. Plays will be selected based on their originality, range, production potential, narrative quality and emotional resonance


PROCESS OF SUBMISSION:

You will be asked to include:
your play as a PDF (without the writer’s name, email or other identifying marks on any page throughout the script – to aid our blind reading process). The script should include a character list. Please ensure the file name of your play matches the name of the play e.g. theweir.pdf
Within the form, you will be asked to include your name, play title and contact details (location, email and phone), which will be kept in a database unseen by the reading panel.

SUBMISSION DATES:

The window for submissions opens Monday June 3rd 2019.
The closing date for submissions is Friday June 28th 2019 (12 midnight GMT).
Please note that these criteria will be applied strictly and any submissions made after the closing date or not following the submission guidelines will not be considered. In addition, our festival’s reading panel will not be able to provide feedback on specific plays or on the status of your application.

The writers of the plays that have been shortlisted will be contacted in September and will be asked to send any updated version of their play, as this will be the final version considered and the version read at the festival if chosen.

The invited plays will be announced in October.

CASTING: Please note – the chosen plays will be read by an ensemble of actors, each performing roles in multiple plays in the festival. While we will endeavor to provide the best match of cast for each play that is read, in terms of characters’ listed ages/ethnicities, we also need to form an ensemble to best cover the entire range of the festival’s program. We appreciate our playwrights’ understanding of our ensemble-based casting.

The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for .Scholars and Writers supports projects that draw on the research collections at The New York Public Library's Stephen A. Schwarzman Building (formerly the Humanities and Social Sciences Library). The Center looks for top-quality writing from academics as well as from creative writers and independent scholars. Visual artists whose projects require extensive use of Library collections are also encouraged to apply. The Center aims to promote dynamic conversation about the humanities, social sciences, and scholarship at the highest level-within the Center, in public forums throughout the Library, and in the Fellows' published work.

Successful candidates for this Fellowship will need to work primarily at the Schwarzman Building rather than at other divisions of the Library. Applications from those working not in English are welcome; however, the applicant must be conversant in English, and the application materials must be in English.

In order to avoid real or apparent conflicts of interest, the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers does not accept applications from New York Public Library staff members or their partners, or from people active on the Library’s Board of Trustees, Board Advisory Committees, or Library Council.

Fellows are required to work at the Cullman Center for the duration of the Fellowship term and may not accept other major professional obligations during the term. Anyone who needs to be away for more than two days must notify the Center's Director or Deputy Director. The Library will pro-rate stipends for Fellows who spend too much time away from the Center.

Fellowships will not be granted for academic projects to post-doctoral fellows or to applicants doing graduate-school dissertation research.

The Cullman Center will not accept dossier letters in place of new letters of recommendation.

New Masculinities Festival seeks proposals

At the New Masculinities Festival, we examine the impact of expectations of masculinity on people's lives and imagine new possibilities for gender expression. We use the power of theatre, dance, poetry, spoken word, performance art, and dialogue to challenge thinking and transport participants to new worlds and perspectives.

We are seeking performances of all kinds that passionately and curiously investigate how expectations of masculinity impact people’s lives, both positively and negatively, overtly and unexpectedly. We seek pieces that have the potential to challenge audience members to experience the world and, in some cases the word masculinity, in a new way.

The festival is open to people of all gender and sexual identities. We strongly encourage proposals from people traditionally underrepresented on stage: People of color, young people, seniors, HIV positive people, disabled people, trans, non-binary, and gender nonconforming people, and lesbian, gay, and bisexual people—come on out!

Green Stories seeks stage plays on building a sustainable society

This competition is free to enter. There will be prizes and routes to production.

We are looking for Stage Plays that in some way touch upon ideas around building a sustainable society. If you’d prefer to create your story in a different format, click here. We will consider all genres – rom-com, literary fiction, science fiction, mystery, crime etc. – but stories must engage with the idea of environmentally sustainable practices and/or sustainable societies.

Most stories set in the future are dystopian, meaning they have a pessimistic view of society. We will consider all stories, but we encourage you to imagine a more positive settings and practices for your stories. You can find out more about why we recommend positive stories by clicking here. Do feel free to draw upon the resources in this Green Stories website to write your story (found in the menu on the homepage. Each page provides links to articles/videos that describe the ideas and also ideas for how such ideas may be integrated into stories.

The story doesn’t have to be about sustainability or climate change directly. A rom-com, for example, could be set in a society that replaces ownership with borrowing and the heroine goes to a clothes library to pick up a posh dress and borrow jewellery for her big date; or the hero in a crime drama could use a carbon credit card and hear the news in the background reporting on the wellbeing index instead of GDP; or the characters in a legal drama could live in a city where everyone has gardens on their roofs and generates energy from their own waste.

Our short story competition (deadline April 2018) has resulted in an anthology of the 20 best stories called ‘Resurrection Trust’  which will be published 20th March 2019 and available on Amazon. This may well provide some inspiration.

Stage Play Guidelines

Deadline: 30th June 2019

Length: min 1 hour 15 minutes max 2 hours (typically 60-80 pages)

Prizes: £750: 1st prize £500, 2nd prize £100, third prize £50 plus £50 for best student submission (18-25 years) and £50 for best < 18 year submission.

Staging of winning play: Live Your Values production company have said they will read all top-rated scripts with a view to putting on a production in 2020 with a community based theatre group.

Full Guidelines

Plays

  • The competition is open to all nationalities, but plays must be written in English and unpublished for the duration of the competition.
  • Green Stories competitions aim to increase positive views of the future. All plays must contain ideas that solve the environmental, social or economic challenges our world faces today; or be in a world that has moved past environmental damage and extreme economic inequality.
  • Plays must be written for the stage for more than one actor with a running time of 70  – 120 minutes. (full length)
  • By entering the competition, the writer affirms that their entry is original, and they have sole rights to all matters contained within the play.
  • The authors name and contact details must be removed from all pages of the script. All pages to be numbered.
  • The first page of each script should include a completed play synopsis of no more than 200 words, a list of characters, a description of setting.
  • The organisers will not accept responsibility for the loss of scripts in transit.
  • The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence concerning the results will be entered into.
  • Play submissions that do not comply with all competition rules will be read in their entirety but may be discounted from the competition without notification to the writer.


The closing date for all entries is 30th June 2019.

Judging/Prizes

  • Live Your Values Ltd will consider all scripts for production in a community theatre with volunteer performers.
  • If a winning script is produced by the Live Your Values Ltd, the prize money will replace royalties for a three-night run.

  • Entertainment – is the audience’s attention captured and held?
  • Characters – distinctive characters people can identify with, so they care what happens to them.

Fee will be waived (with hard copy submissions only) for members of the Dramatists Guild and submissions by legitimate literary agents (not lawyers/attorneys/friends).

For those submitting digitally – the $15 fee cannot be waived, and will be used to offset printing costs.  The fee may be mailed separately or processed by contacting the theatre.

ELIGIBILITY

JET encourages all playwrights over 18 to submit their work. JET's programming generally reflects issues of social conscience and human rights both in drama and comedy. Use our past productions as a guide and if you have questions, contact us at 248-788-2900.

Entry must be a full length original work or adaptation with a minimum running time of 85 minutes that has not been produced prior to the festival in 2020. Cast size of 10 or less is preferred. Staged readings/workshop productions are not disqualifying factors.

ENTRIES ACCEPTED
Submissions will be accepted January 1, 2019 - June 30, 2019 at 11:59 PM.
(checked by postmark or time stamp).

SCRIPTS
Submit a copy of your script, securely bound, typed in standard play format, with pages numbered. Include a list of characters/descriptions, scene breakdown, and a brief synopsis of your play. Your script(s) should be accompanied by a cover letter, including playwright contact information (name, address, phone number, e-mail address) and resume. Musicals must include a demo CD. If applicable, also submit a photocopy of your Dramatists Guild membership card.

The acceptable electronic format is an Adobe PDF file.

Please note that entries that do not comply with our guidelines will not be accepted. If you would like acknowledgement of receipt please attach a self addressed stamped postcard.

CONSENT
The playwright gives the Jewish Ensemble Theatre permission to photocopy scripts for reading/production purposes. Should your script be selected as one of the finalists, you are encouraged to attend the readings and talk backs.

The finalists award the Jewish Ensemble Theatre the option to produce any of the finalist plays as part of its main stage season. Finalists must acknowledge the Jewish Ensemble Theatre if/when the script is published

AWARDS
Each of the four finalists will receive a $250 honorarium. No other expenses will be paid.

SELECTION PROCESS
Each entry is guaranteed a minimum of 2 evaluations. The committee narrows down the entries to 15 – 20, which are read by the entire committee who then select the finalists.

Note that if you apply as a composer and a lyricist, you will be accepted as one or the other (that is, as either a composer or a lyricist) and you will be assigned different collaborators over the course of the year. If you apply as both a composer/lyricist and a librettist and are accepted as both, you will spend your first year as a composer/lyricist only, as the two groups meet at the same time.

Auditions
Select applicants will be invited to audition in early September. Librettist are accepted on the basis of their written materials and are not required to audition.

At the auditions, composers and composer/lyricists will be asked to perform at least two contrasting theatrical compositions; lyricists will be asked to recite samples of their theatrical lyrics. All auditions must be done live, using a piano.

Program upon Acceptance
The Workshop runs September through May in New York City. Prospective members must make their own living arrangements in the city or be able to commute weekly.

During the first year, composers and lyricists are paired off and are asked to create appropriate songs based on scenes from various sources. The writers perform their assignments, which are then discussed by the other writers and the moderators. There are analyses and discussions of current and past musicals, with an eye to understanding form and structure. Every effort is made to insure that each writer retains his or her individual style.

In the Workshop’s final phase (Second Year), teams work on a musical. The Workshop functions as a forum and a sounding board for works in progress, as music and lyrics are critically evaluated and open dialogue is encouraged.

At the end of each Second Year, the Workshop Committee determines which writers from the group are invited to join the Advanced Workshop. Not everyone is asked. This Workshop is intended for writers of professional caliber who are expected to contribute to the vitality of the musical theatre scene.

The First Year Workshop meets Monday at 6:15 p.m. The Second Year Workshop meets Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Advanced Workshop meets Monday at 4:00 p.m.

The Fresh Fruit Festival 10-Minute Play Contest

Open to New York City residents. At our main venue: The Wild Project on Monday July 15. **Please submit in first Email:

  • A 1-paragraph description/synopsis of play, including listing of props you will be bringing in. (No Set Pieces other than what we provide)
  • Number in Cast (must be more than 1)
  • Estimated run-time (must be 10-minutes or less)
  • Performance history if any
  • 7 will be selected on the basis of representing LGBT life; priority is given to new or unperformed work.

All 7 selected will each receive a $25 travel stipend.

Winners will be selected by a) Audience Vote, and b) judges vote.

The 2 winners will each receive a $100 author’s award.

All submissions are entered into the Festival’s official activities for annual award consideration, and eligible for our discounts at all major rehearsal studios.

There will be common set pieces available (various stock tables and chairs, some cubes, etc.) There is a very complete rep lighting plot available (we program and run for you). Sound available if run by YOUR stage manager; Please keep sound cues FEW and SIMPLE. You will have a 15-minute “tech” to set cues (and run if time permits!) during: 2:30 – 5 pm on Monday July 15th.  Performance begins at 6 pm. Audience admission $12 cash at the box office. Box Office will also honor all Festival passes and Multi-Ticket season passes.

North Park Playwright Festival 2019

Our goal in building the North Park Vaudeville and Candy Shoppe was to provide a small theater to produce new, untested plays.  In support of this goal we have produced the North Park Playwright Festival each October.  The festival provides a platform for brand new, short (ten minute), plays written by playwrights from around the world.  Over the past twelve years more than 440 new plays have been produced.  We encourage new directors and actors to become involved in theater through the festival as well.  Through the North Park Playwright Festival over ninety playwrights, directors, and actors each year are able to showcase their talents.  We invite interested playwrights to submit work to the festival.  Please follow the guidelines below.

We are looking for:

1.  Short new plays (no more than 12 pages, less is fine) that are easily staged and have casts with no more than four people.  Our theater is very small and we normally use a minimal set concept in this festival.  We have to be able to change sets in just a few minutes as we do six to seven plays each evening of the festival.  We don't have space for large casts.

2.  We request new work. A play that has had workshops or one or two previous productions is OK, but we are not interested in work that has been produced in numerous other places.  Our goal in building the theater was to have a place to produce brand new work and let playwrights have a chance to see their work done for the first time.

3.  We seek complete plays rather than excerpts from a larger work.

4.  Work will be chosen by the directors we have in the festival.  It is not a "contest" and we are not really judging plays in the formal sense.  The directors choose the plays we will produce, within the production budget guidelines we give them.

5.  Most subject matter is OK.  We don't do nudity or off color humor.

6.  We ask that all submissions be sent to us via snail mail at the theater.  Address is: North Park Vaudeville and Candy Shoppe, 2031 El Cajon Blvd., San Diego, CA 92104, Attn Summer Golden, Artistic Director.  We have too much trouble with differing email, word processing, and computer platform issues to take them via email.  Additionally, our selection process requires the directors read the plays submitted and the cost of printing all the plays we receive each year is prohibitive.  Please insure submissions have a title page with complete contact information (including email), a character summary, and are in proper script form.  There is no charge to enter.

7.  Submissions must be postmarked by June 30, 2019.  Please do not send plays by any method that requires a signature from us. We are not often at the theater when delivery occurs.  We will email notice of receipt to all playwrights submitting plays.

8.  Send only one script.  Multiple submissions do not increase chances of production.

General information:

We are trying to support new work and involve actors, playwrights, and directors of all experience levels. We have had a wide variety of artists involved from very experienced to first time directors and actors, to an 8 year old playwright (very short, well received play).  We feel having a wide range of experience involved helps the new people learn from the more experienced.

Urbanite Theatre: Modern Works Festival seeks plays by women

Submission Rules and Requirements:

Interested playwrights are encouraged to read Urbanite’s mission statement and look at our production history to get an idea of the type of work we produce.  Urbanite Theatre will only consider submissions that meet the following criteria:
  • Submissions must be from female or female-identifying playwrights.
  • Playwrights must reside in the United States. 
  • Plays must be unproduced and unpublished with limited development. 
  • No musicals, translations, or adaptations.
  • Full-length plays only (at least 60 minutes)
  • Plays must require five performers or fewer.
  • Quality, female-identifying roles must be well-represented.
  • Plays must include a contact page and character breakdown.
  • One submission per playwright.
  • Any plays that do not follow these requirements will be dismissed.
  • Playwrights must be available to attend festival, including rehearsals, in Sarasota to be considered for selection (October 5 - 13). Housing, transportation and per diem will be provided to finalists.
Festival Rules and Guidelines:
  • Three finalists will be chosen to participate in the Modern Works Festival. 
  • Finalists will be selected by panel of readers and notified by Urbanite Theatre on August 12, 2019. 
  • The volume of submissions will prevent us from providing individual feedback.
  • ONLY finalist playwrights will be contacted. 
  • Plays that have been previously submitted to the Urbanite Theatre or the Modern Works Festival are not eligible to be submitted again.
  • Each finalist will receive the following: a professional director and cast, a table read, 12 rehearsal hours, a staged reading with a total of three public performances, and facilitated post-show talkbacks. 
  • Each finalist play will be assigned a play development mentor to work with before, and during the festival.
  • Finalist playwrights are required to participate, in person, at the festival, if selected. Travel will be provided ($600 transportation limit), and local housing within walking distance to the theatre will be provided. A car is not provided at this time.
  • Playwrights are required to participate in the rehearsal process and attend the readings and talkbacks for their play.  
  • Winner of festival will receive a $3,000 prize. 
  • The two remaining finalists will each receive an award of $500.
  • No other royalties or payments will be issued.
  • Submissions will be capped after the first 300 scripts are received.
  • Winner will be chosen by a group of panelists in conjunction with an audience vote and will be announced October 13, 2019.

The Boston Project call for proposals

The Boston Project is a new works initiative supporting the creation and development of plays set right here in our hometown. Our goal is to create more plays that explore what it means to be in this city at this moment, and tap into the full breadth of experiences and identities that make up life in Boston. We are seeking proposals for currently unwritten full-length scripts set in contemporary Boston.

  • Proposals for unwritten full-length plays meeting the requirements on the following page will be accepted April 15th through June 15th, 2019.
  • From the submitted proposals, SpeakEasy will select two projects, and invite the playwrights to spend the 2019-2020 season writing and developing their plays with us.
  • Once proposals are selected, SpeakEasy will work with the playwrights to build a development schedule that fits their needs. Potential available resources include: regular dramaturgical meetings, research assistance, deadlines, table reads, and feedback sessions with the artistic staff. Each playwright will also be paired with a dedicated, professional dramaturg to assist with their process.
  • The development process will culminate in a two-week workshop and invited staged reading in May/June 2020. SpeakEasy will pair each playwright with a director for this process, and cast the reading with professional actors.
  • The selected playwrights will each be paid a commissioning fee.
  • SpeakEasy will hold an exclusive production option on the proposed play during its development process, and for a period of ninety days following the 2020 workshop.

Application Requirements

To be considered for the Boston Project, please submit by 8pm EST on June 15th, 2019:

  • A 1-2 page proposal for an unwritten full length play (90+ minutes). The play must be set in Boston or its surrounding areas, and take place within ten years, plus or minus, of the present day.
  • 5-10 exploratory pages for the proposed play. These pages need not be a single, polished scene, but should give a clear sense of how the play will ultimately live on stage.
  • A professional biography or writing resume detailing your playwriting experience.
  • A separate full length (90+ minutes) play by you.
  • All materials should be submitted in .pdf format to bostonproject@speakeasystage.com. Please include all materials in a single e-mail.

Important Information for Applicants

•  This project is designed to support the development of a brand new play. This is not the time to submit a script which you’ve already written; we want to work with you as you explore a fresh idea in its earliest stages.
•  The proposed play need not center on or be inspired by any real event/person. The only requirement is that it be set in contemporary Boston or its surrounding areas.
•  For this project’s purposes, “contemporary” means plus or minus ten years from today.
•  Your 1-2 page proposal should explain the play you intend to create, and may include: a synopsis of the work as best you know it, a potential cast list and/or character breakdown, a statement regarding the inspiration for the work, and any other information about the play you envision. You may also let us know any specific needs you foresee during the development process.
•  There is no hard limit on cast size, but typically the plays that SpeakEasy produces use between four and eight actors.
•  While we love musicals here at SpeakEasy, we will not be considering proposals for new musicals as part of this season’s Boston Project.
•  The intention of The Boston Project is to develop plays over time that legitimize Boston as a beautifully complex setting. It is crucial that playwrights have strong roots in the greater Boston area, consider themselves to be “local” playwrights, and have a deep and thorough understanding of the city and its arts community.
•  SpeakEasy is unable to provide housing or travel reimbursement during the development and workshop process.
•  Part of SpeakEasy’s mission is to reflect the vibrance and diversity of our city. Projects which further that goal will be of particular interest in the selections process.

RELENTLESS AWARD

The Relentless Award, established in honor of Philip Seymour Hoffman and his pursuit of truth in the theater, is the largest annual cash prize in American theater awarded to a playwright in recognition of a new play.
What we are looking for:
• Plays that are challenging.
• Plays that exhibit fearlessness.
• Plays that are not mainstream.
• Plays that exude passion.
• Plays that are relentlessly truthful.

The American Playwriting Foundation encourages submissions by first-time playwrights, playwrights of color, and playwrights of all gender identifications.
Prize:
• The author of the Relentless Award-winning play will receive $45,000.
• The winning playwright will have the option to have the winning play published by the Dramatists Play Service.
• The winning playwright will have a week-long residency at SPACE on Ryder Farm, an artist residency program housed on a working organic farm in Brewster, New York. The author can elect to have a director, a dramaturg and actors join him or her while in residence on the farm.
• The selected play will have a national roll-out through the Ed Vassallo Relentless Reading Series, established to help bring to life and develop the winning play by presenting a series of staged readings at some of the top theaters across the United States.
• When the winning play is selected, Finalists and Semifinalists will also be named. Here's a list of past Relentless Award winners, finalists, and semifinalists.

2019 submissions open on May 1, 2019. The deadline is June 15, 2019. Please join our mailing list to receive updates once that information is live.

Eligibility/Criteria for Submission:
• Play must be unproduced.
• Authors must have either United States citizenship, possess a green card, or currently reside in the United States and have lived here for at least four years.
• Plays with a producer, producing organization, or theater attached for future production are not eligible.
• One-act plays, musicals and plays for children are not eligible.
• The author must be at least 21 years old.

How to submit your play:
When submissions open, there will be link to Submittable.com at the bottom of this page that you can use to submit your play.

• NOTE: please DO NOT have your name or other identifying info (email/phone number) on any of your manuscript pages. Please also exclude agent info, development info, and dedications. This will preserve the author's anonymity for the judges.

• Please provide your script file in pdf (rather than Word documents), with the title format: TITLE OF PLAY.pdf. Do not include your name in the file script title.

• You'll receive confirmation that your script has been received. As submissions are processed manually, please allow up to two weeks to receive this confirmation.

 To enter the monologue competition, send a monologue of up to ten minutes duration as an attachment to info@soundwork-uk.co.uk by 30th September 2019. The winner wil have the monologue recorded by a professional actor and placed on Soundcloud and the soundwork-uk.co.uk website along with a photo. Monologues may have been published elsewhere. The first page should include the writer's name and email address. There is no entry fee and no receipt of submission will be sent.

The LIC One Act Festival is now accepting plays for its 4th annual festival. The Secret Theatre seeks to promote new work and emerging playwrights through our annual One Act Festival. We also promote playwrights through publishing anthologies of the winning plays; all of the final plays, including the festival winner, are offered a non-exclusive publishing agreement. We have currently published 5 volumes of short plays.
No fee to submit or produce.

Each Play is guaranteed multiple performances [the exact number is decided once our final selection is made. Factors include the length of plays but is not usually less than 4 performances]

Guidelines:
• Plays must be between 10 – 20 minutes in length. Preference given to plays that have not been produced before.  Timings must be accurate please overestimate if not sure.


• Playwrights are responsible for selecting director and cast. (We may be able to help you if you do not have a director but preference will be given to playwrights who can provide their own directors and actors.)
• Easy to produce. (If you have a play which for instance includes a swimming pool, a large amount of sets and props, or anything else too elaborate or is impossible to cast we may reject it.)
• Please submit plays in PDF or Word format only.


• We will divide selected plays into three or four programs, selected Playwrights will be informed on a rolling basis.

Rebel Theater Company WeFest - 10-minute plays

REBEL THEATER COMPANY is seeking diverse Brooklyn-based playwrights to submit new works for their Inaugural WeFest - 10 Minute Political Play Festival.

The WeFest is built around inclusion and celebrates the rich diversity of Brooklyn, New York. The Festival will present Staged Readings of new plays from twelve diverse Brooklyn-based playwrights who have created pieces that focus on political movements or moments of the last decade. The WeFest is presented by Rebel Theatre and the Equity in the Arts and Culture Committee of the Brooklyn Branch of the NAACP and will be presented at Triskelion Arts in Brooklyn.   We encourage playwrights to apply with directors as writers will not be allowed to direct their own work. When choosing your director please keep in mind that we are seeking diversity in all creative roles.

If you are selected for the Festival you will be required to pay a $25 entrance fee. You, along with your director will cast the play and rehearse on your own time. You will receive a small tech period the day before the Festival begins. The play will receive two performance opportunities over the weekend of August 2-4, 2019. The “Best Play” will receive a small honorarium, certificate and 3 hours of free rehearsal time at Triskelion Arts.   To submit please follow the link below to fill out the application. New Classes Added this Summer at Primary Stages ESPA

We are so excited to add TWO new sections of classes at Primary Stages ESPA this Summer: First Draft with Crystal Skillman and Rewriting Your Draft with Stefanie Zadravec.

This 8-week class at Primary Stages ESPA will guide you through the development of your first draft. Crystal's section is a class of the IMAGINATION. This class will be very much focused on what you are passionate to write a full-length about and what is theatrical – and what MUST be a play.

This class might be for you if you:
  • Are a playwright of any level looking to start the first draft of your new play. 
  • Are starting out in the world of playwriting or want to write your first play. 
  • Want concrete deadlines and constructive feedback to encourage you to get your ideas on the page.
In this class you will:
  • Bring in new pages to hear them read aloud in class. 
  • Strengthen your writing skills with exercises and assignments from your instructor. 
  • Engage in discussion with fellow writers, making connections with your artistic peers.
By the end of this class you will:
  • Have a solid start on—or even complete!—a first draft of a full-length play. 
  • Be ready for our Completing Your Draft class!

As soon as you finish your last line of dialogue, the need for rewrites begins. This 8-week class will help you tackle the revision process and develop a stronger version of your play.

This class might be for you if you:
  • Have a fully completed draft of a full-length play and you are ready to begin rewrites. (If you are unsure if your play fits the parameters of this class, please contact us!)
  • Want to be challenged in a classroom environment that is run like a professional playwriting workshop.
  • Are a new or returning Primary Stages ESPA writer.
In this class you will:
  • Start by articulating and addressing your goals for this new draft. 
  • Present longer chunks of text (20-30 pages) every other week. 
  • Receive feedback and response to your work from the group, filtered through a series of prompts given by Stefanie. 
  • Complete writing exercises to inspire you to ask new questions of your play, look at it from various angles, and deconstruct it.
By the end of this class you will:
  • Have a stronger draft of your play. 
  • Be adept at giving and receiving useful feedback to work that is in-process. 
  • Have the tools you need to transform any first draft into a more streamlined, compelling work that’s ready to be heard. 
  • Be ready to apply for The Second Draft.
