Everyday Inferno Annual Outdoor Park Show

web site

Everyday Inferno is seeking scripts for our annual free summer show in Central Park, NY. We accept script submissions for future consideration year-round (we are currently reading submissions for 2018). All plays submitted must be set entirely outdoors, in a setting suitable to our venue, Summit Rock. As an example, past productions have included Marivaux's The Dispute, Euripides' Iphigenia Among the Taurians, and a new commission set on an uninhabited planet. Playwrights submitting work should keep our company's mission and past work in mind - plays should focus on at least one complex female role, and plays with large (6-12 person) casts and primarily youthful roles are the most likely to be successful.

To apply: Please submit your work online at http://everydayinferno.com/scriptsubmissions.html.

Length: Around 60 minutes in production (75 minutes absolute maximum)

Compensation: Everyday Inferno Theatre Co. covers all production costs associated with rehearsing and performing the piece. In some cases, we are able to offer a very small stipend, dependent on funding. Playwrights retain copyright and full ownership of their plays.

Important: Please ensure that a character breakdown (including age and gender, if applicable) is included on the version of the script you submit to us.

Format: PDF format is STRONGLY preferred. Google docs will not be considered.

BoxFest Detroit 2017 Call for Submissions

web site

BoxFest Detroit is an annual festival that showcases and creates opportunities for women directors!

We are looking for 5 – 55-minute submissions for our August 2017 festival. We will only accept three (3) submissions per playwright. Please submit all plays by June 5th.

Because all artists participate on a volunteer basis, we are unable (at this time) to compensate playwrights if their submission is chosen for the festival.

Online submission form

The International Festival of Horror Radio Plays

web site

The submission window for Deathscribe X, the 10th Annual Festival of Horror Radio Plays, is from May 1 to July 31, 2017. Submissions are accepted VIA EMAIL ONLY at deathscribe2017@gmail.com.

Every year we seek 10-minute radio scripts that are genuinely scary, imaginative, chilling, intelligent, suspenseful, horrific or downright grotesque. Writers may submit up to two radio plays to Deathscribe in any given year. Five scripts will be selected from all submissions. These five pieces will be performed on stage in front of a live audience. The writer of the winning piece, chosen by a celebrity panel of judges, will receive the coveted Bloody Axe Award, as well as a $100 cash prize.

Guidelines:

PDF format is strongly preferred. If PDF is not possible, then only MS Word please.
All scripts must have a title page with all contact information, but NO identifying information should appear anywhere else in the document.
Scripts must be no more than TEN MINUTES in length, and should follow radio drama format. An example of proper radio drama format can be found here: http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/scripts/bbcradioscene.pdf

The Deathscribe experience includes performing the pieces on stage with Foley artists and a band creating the sound effects and music live. Therefore, scripts must be ready to produce, including direction for sound and music cues. Sorry, but submissions cannot include usage of copyrighted music.
Writers may submit up to two (2) scripts for Deathscribe consideration in any year.

NO SCREENPLAYS. SCREENPLAYS WILL BE DISCARDED. WE KNOW THEM WHEN WE SEE THEM. (Nothing against screenplays. But this is a radio play festival.)

DO NOT submit full-length plays for consideration in Deathscribe. They will be discarded. If you wish to submit a full-length horror play to WildClaw, see our general submission guidelines.

All submissions must be made electronically. Please make sure your script is formatted correctly according to the guidelines and submit your script as an attachment to deathscribe2017@gmail.com. Please include the title of your play in the subject line.

Deathscribe selections are “blind.” The title page should include the title of the script, names of all authors, and the address, phone and email address of the author(s). The subsequent pages must include only the manuscript title and page number and NO identifying personal information (name, address, email, etc.) or it will be disqualified.

Please be aware that these scripts, if chosen, will be performed by no more than 6 actors, therefore scripts with more characters will require double casting by the director of the piece.

MANHATTAN REP'S SUMMER PLAY PRODUCTION PROGRAM - Seeking 10 Minute to Full-length plays

web site

So this is an idea that we have been kicking around for some time, but now that we have settled in to our new Theatre space on 45th Street, we are making it possible for anyone with a good play, and for a nominal fee, to have their play produced at Manhattan Rep (and at other theatres in town too! - See below.) We will supply the director, the cast, the rehearsal space, set and props, and we will bring your play to life in Midtown Manhattan where one can invite friends, family, and more to come and see it. And it won't cost an arm and a leg!

For a 10 minute play with 2 to 3 characters:

For Manhattan Rep to put up your production in one of our short play events the fee will be $695.00

For a 11 - 20 minute short play with 1 to 3 characters:

For Manhattan Rep to put up your production in one of our short play events the fee will be $895.00

For a 20 - 35 minute 1 act play with 1 to 4 characters:

For Manhattan Rep to put up your production in one of our short play events the fee will be $1195.00

For a Full - Length play with up to 6 characters:

Fee based on the play and production requirements.
Usually the Budget/Fee for a Full-Length play is 4 to 6 times as much of that of a Short Play due to play requirements, rehearsal time and more.

If you are interested in this program, please email your submission to manhattanrep@yahoo.com

Please include the complete play as a .pdf,

a synopsis of the play,
the aprox. running time,
set and lighting requirements,
your contact email address,
your mailing address,
and your contact phone number.

Please put "Play Production Program" in the subject heading.
We will get back to you in a day or so as to your acceptance to this program.

FESTIVAL PLAY PRODUCTION PROGRAM

ALSO, we are offering this same service if you have a play that has been accepted in to a theatre festival in New York City. For a production fee, we will handle everything from casting to props and costumes, to rehearsal space, to hiring a technician to run the board, and more, and much of the rehearsal will be on a real stage with lights and sound, so that your actors and your production staff will be so well prepared when your team FLIES into the festival to quickly and rushedly handle the Sound and Lights when you load in. ( I once had a friend who had a show in the Fringe years ago. They only finished HALF of their tech in the allotted tech time, so for opening night they had to crash and burn through their tech, open their show while never having done the tech before! Needless to say, it was a nightmare! This definitely won't happen if you work with our team for we will have literally done much of the tech work in advance.)

If you are interested in our FESTIVAL PLAY PRODUCTION PROGRAM
please email:
  • The name of the Festival you have been accepted into
  • The TECH/DRESS /Production dates and times sent to you by the Festival,
  • the complete play as a .pdf,
  • a synopsis of the play,
  • the aprox. running time,
  • set and lighting requirements,
  • your contact email address,
  • your mailing address,
  • and your contact phone number.
to: manhattanrep@yahoo.com

Please put "FESTIVAL PLAY PRODUCTION PROGRAM" in the subject heading.

And we will get back to you in a day or so as to your acceptance, and if accepted, with a budget/fee for the Festival Play Production.

We really like risk-taking and disclaimer-free art, so we encourage you to think outside the (ice)box.

What else should I know?

Playwrights Realm Writing Fellowship

web site

Submissions for 2017-2018 Writing Fellowship due May 21st

DOWNLOAD APPLICATION HERE

About the Program
The Writing Fellowship is at the heart of what we do: helping writers write. Four early-career playwrights receive nine months of resources, readings and feedback designed to help them reach their professional and artistic goals. Over the course of the season, Fellows develop a single new play. Monthly group meetings provide a collaborative, energizing space for writers to share and refine their work. One-on-one meetings with The Realm’s artistic staff support each writer’s specific artistic process. Fellows work with a director, design consultant, and actors over the course of two readings to see their work come to life. Professional development resources are also integral to the program and are tailored to meet the needs of each Writing Fellow. Mentor opportunities, meet-and-greets, and professional seminars are designed to shed light on the business of theatre, and empower the Fellows to be active, informed participants in their own careers. The culminating event of the program is our INK’D Festival, which features a public reading of each Fellow’s play.

What We’re Looking For
Above all, we look for dedicated early-career writers who crave a long-term, rigorous development process. We value intellectual curiosity, imagination and bravery. We love plays with evocative language, plays that contemplate big, unanswerable questions, that embrace the complexity of life, and demonstrate an understanding of the possibilities of dramatic storytelling. And of course, plays that are inherently theatrical—that could never be anything other than a play!

As a playwright-centric company hoping to help create the next generation of successful playwrights, we believe it is our responsibility to ensure that the playwrights and the stories we support fully reflect the diversity of the society we live in. As such, we encourage writers and stories with unique cultural perspectives, experiences and backgrounds.

Writing Fellows Receive

$3,000 Award

Internal reading

Public reading

An occasional hug

Program Criteria

Playwrights must be able to attend meetings and readings in New York City approximately twice monthly from September 2017 through May 2018.

Playwrights should identify as early-career.

Those enrolled in an MFA program during the span of the fellowship are not eligible.

Plays to be considered for the fellowship should be complete drafts at a stage of development that would benefit from a nine-month rewriting and workshopping process.

Plays should have no commitments to other theaters that will limit their development with Playwrights Realm.

Plays going through another similar development process simultaneously, or that have had a production outside of an academic environment, are not eligible.

We are not looking for solo performance projects at this time.

Play Writing Project - TwainFest

web site

In cooperation with Write Out Loud and in association with the Playwrights Project, the Descendants of Early San Diego announced a play writing project where submissions are to be used for TwainFest at Old Town San Diego State Park August 2017.

The Descendants of Early San Diego (Formerly known as the Old Town San Diego Descendants Group or Committee), announces that they are soliciting submissions of short monologues for presentation specifically for TwainFest to be held at Old Town San Diego State Park in August annually. TwainFest is an annual event celebrating the 1800’s with a specific focus on literature from that period, which is sponsored by Write Out Loud.

This is part of the ongoing activities of the Descendants Group to celebrate the people who helped develop the area we know as the greater San Diego Region. Submissions of original monologues from 3 to 10 minutes in length are being solicited for possible inclusion in the activities of TwainFest, and possible other educational / entertainment presentations celebrating the targeted historical period.

The monologues are to depict real people who actually lived in the Region, share with the audience their individual stories and to get a glimpse of life in the 1800’s. Previous works have told the story of specific people and explored such topics as: Toys of the 1800’s, Women Gambling acceptable in California, the Cattle Industry of Early California, the changing of the flag from Spain to Mexico, the real life people that the legion of Zorro is based on among others. Monologues are to be written in the first person as spoken by the actual person who lived in the period speaking to a group of people who have come to San Diego. The piece should assume the character knows nothing of today’s events or evolution. The life of the character must be historically accurate and the slice of life must also be accurate. Topics of inclusion may include historical events of the day, foods, clothing, politics, customs, lifestyles, daily chores, transportation, social interactions, etc. The selected pieces will be performed by compensated actors during the activities of TwainFest and performed several times during the course of the day’s activities.
Set up of piece should be introducing themselves to a group by identifying themselves then telling their story. Within the context of their speaking they will share something about life in California during the 1800’s. Previous works have welcomed guests to San Diego and asked if they are looking for cattle or if they might be interested in gambling, then proceeded to expand on themselves and their slice of life. A committee from Write Out Loud, Playwrights Project, and the Descendants of Early San Diego will review submitted material to select pieces which will be compensated at $100 each script. We look to find 2 – 3 new scripts a year. Depending on the quality of submissions there is no specific limitation on awarded scripts. The committee may refer a script for assistance with the Playwrights Project, not be included at this time or compensated for submission. Compensated scripts and authors will be announced at the annual Descendants Reunion weekend which is held the last weekend of June yearly.

Submissions will be accepted from anyone but must meet the criteria for the project.

August (dates to be announced and may be expanded to more than one day) performances of pieces at TwainFest activities
Criteria for submitted pieces/monologues
  1. Depict a person who actually lived in the San Diego Region during the 1800’s with factual information about them.
  2. Length of piece should be between 3 and 10 minutes of actual performance time.
  3. The piece should be written in the first person from the perspective of the historical person identified.
  4. The piece must also include something about the times, either: events, culture, music, foods, clothing, customs, social interactions of the times, weapons, tools, transportation, etc. within the context of what the character says. It should be informative but remain primarily as entertainment. This is not meant to be a lecture or lesson but will gently inform the audience about the target period of history while also entertaining them.
  5. Submissions must be received by email or by mail to Project Manager, Victor C. Contreras at viccroscon@yahoo.com or 110 N. 2nd Ave. #65, Chula Vista, Ca. 91910. Deadline for accepted submissions is May 31. (Mailed items will not be returned)
  6. Authors of submitted material selected for compensation agree to authorize The Descendants of Early San Diego and Write Outloud to present the piece with a compensated performer without further compensation.
  7. Compensated scripts will be paid $100 per script. Compensated performers will be compensated at a rate of $125 per day of performance.
  8. All decisions including casting will be the purview of the joint committee with weighted votes for the Event Director of Twainfest, Project Manager, within the committee with representation from the Descendants of Early San Diego, Write Out Loud, and the Playwrights Project.

Mad Apple Collective seeks one-act plays (UK - open to all playwrights)

web site

For our third residency at ACANTEEN this October, we are opening our submission window until 19th May.

The Locked Room
Four intriguing one-act plays set in the confines of a locked room…

We are looking for four brand-new one-act plays, which bring a sense of dark intrigue and mystery to our theme The Locked Room.

What can happen when people find themselves locked in a room? Who are they, how did they come to be there and is there a purpose to their incarceration? Yet more intriguing do they (all) get out?

We’re after exceptional ideas that are well written, with memorable characters and a plot that will leave the audience and us spell-bound.

As our third residency will take place in October, we are particularly interested in pieces with a sense of the macabre or malevolence.

The Brief:
Plays must be approximately 30 minutes in length;
Plays must contain a maximum of 3 actors;
A table and up to four chairs are available as standard ‘set but our space is ‘black box’ and pieces must be capable of being performed with minimal furniture, set, props, costume changes etc.;

Recommendations
  • We recommend using Celtx or equivalent to write scripts so that they are produced in a standard format;
  • Submissions should be in either PDF or MS Word form.
  • A very approximate length for a 30-minute play is 23 pages
Submissions should be sent to madapplecollective@gmail.com by 9pm on 19th May 2017.

SENIOR THEATRE PLAYS, BOOKS, AND MATERIALS NEEDED

web site

Deadline: June 15, 2017

ArtAge Publications, the source of Senior Theatre plays, books and materials for older performers is accepting submissions for their 2018-19 catalog. Meeting the needs of older performers, from amateur to professional, there is something for everyone--from short and easy sketches to 3-act musicals.

What to submit: The Senior Theatre collection features plays and musicals of all lengths, but short shows which run up to 20 minutes are the most popular. Directors look for comedies with mainly female casts that require few technical elements and ones that can be staged as readers theatre. Successfully performed shows have senior casts (or mostly senior) with up-to-date, feisty characters in current situations. Roles should challenge performers, yet be fun to stage.

To learn more about the field and the Senior Theatre Resource Center, review the catalog and read Writing Plays for Senior Theatre, an e-document available on the website. Click here for the Writers' Guidelines with complete submission information. Let us know your questions.

The First Draft at Primary Stages ESPA!

Whether you’re writing your first play or your hundredth, it’s not always easy to set the creative wheels in motion.  Write your next play this summer at Primary Stages ESPA!

This 8-week class will guide you through the development of your first draft, providing concrete deadlines, constructive feedback, and a collaborative environment that will encourage you to get your ideas on the page. This class is geared toward all writers, from those just starting out in the world of playwriting to experienced playwrights looking for a chance to start a new piece. Writing can often be a solitary process, but this class will allow you the opportunity to strengthen your writing skills while building connections with your artistic peers.

Section A: Leah Nanako Winkler (Writer, Kentucky at Ensemble Studio Theatre)
Starts June 21
This class will be a collaborative environment where you are encouraged to bring in unfiltered pages and give and receive feedback from classmates in a safe space. Leah views the first draft as a time to write and take risks without neurosis, and will urge you to write from the heart and let everything fall into place from there.

Section C: Abe Koogler (Writer, Kill Floor at Lincoln Center Theater, upcoming Fulfillment Center at MTC)
Starts June 29
Abe believes the best writing comes from the deep unconscious, so this class will help you identify your unconscious impulses, calm your doubts and worries, and write toward the unknown. Abe's goal as a teacher is to help you stay excited about what you're writing, and—if you need it—to help you clear away blocks that are preventing you from moving forward.

Section D: Eddie Sanchez (Writer, Barefoot Boy with Shoes on at Primary Stages)
Starts July 9
Eddie's class is all about being a safe place to try things. One week you may bring in a scene that totally slays, the next week, not so much. But this is the room where you can try. Eddie will send out a questionnaire with the first class to help you focus on what you want to write (and sometimes those initial answers change as the play develops).

This class is also available online! For more information, see Online Classroom

Our award-winning faculty, comprised of working professionals in the field, provides practical skills and expert guidance in a collaborative community atmosphere.
