FWD Theatre Project is now welcoming submissions of full-length musicals

web site

FWD Theatre Project is now welcoming submissions of full-length musicals for their 2015/2016 staged reading season in Chicago. Up to five original works will be chosen for Discovery, Development, and Delivery as part of FWD’s mission to advance new musicals and the theatre community by producing staged readings and educational opportunities. Selected projects will be given a 25-hour Equity contract workshop plus a public staged reading by leading Chicago actors and directors. Each show will also be previewed in a high-profile industry concert produced in October, 2015 (date and location to be announced.)

Selected writers/teams will receive a $200 honorarium plus housing for their scheduled reading. Only completed projects will be considered and finalists will be asked to submit the full libretto, score, and complete recorded demos. Must be unpublished with no prior class-A production and requires proof of underlying rights if the work is based on copyrighted material.

Submissions will be accepted through June 15, and there is no application fee. Electronic submissions only – all requested files should be placed in a single folder (Dropbox or similar data posting site), and the submissions form (below) should be completed and submitted on fwdtheatre.org.

Please include these specific materials and submit only what is requested:
  • 100 word synopsis
  • Cast breakdown
  • Short writer/s bio/s
  • First 30 pages of libretto (must start on page 1 and include title and credits page)
  • 6 mp3 demos: must include the show’s first 2 songs
  • Any songs not in the first 30 script pages should include a description, placement in the show, and function
  • Development history plus attached parties (director, actors, producer/s, current contracts) if applicable
Non-adherence to guidelines may disqualify submission. Finalists will be contacted by mid July at which time the full book, score, and complete demos will be requested and a short interview with FWD artistic leadership scheduled. Winners will be notified early August.
