NYCPlaywrights April 2013 Play of the Month video part 1: OUT LIKE A LAMB by Cassie M. Seinuk

VIEWER ADVISORY: this video clip contains obscene language.

Cassie M. Seinuk on the play:
The play was inspired by the idea that Spring is a resurrection. I was really interested in exploring a character that didn't want to be resurrected and how the Spring air, the beauty of Spring, was his sign to take the final plunge into a whole new rebirth. I also wanted to explore the idea that sometimes a person can't "be happy" just because and how hard it is for the people around them, who love them, to understand that.
More about the author and the cast here.

The following plays were also selected for the April 2013 Play of the Month - video recordings will be posted soon:
  • THE CLUTTERED MIND by Robert S. Robbins
  • MOLES. EAT WORMS. by Steve Mielczarek
  • MY NEW YORK SPARE ROOM by Kevin Jones
  • SPRING CLEANING by Penny Jackson

The Chameleon Theatre Circle's 14th Annual New Play Contest

web site

Rolling Submission Deadline: April 30, 2013

The Chameleon Theatre Circle (located in the Twin Cities area in Minnesota) is seeking original works that have never been produced. All styles and genres are welcomed (i.e. one-acts, musicals, full length dramas, etc.). The winning plays will be showcased in a concert-format festival in September 2013. All shows submitted will automatically be placed on the slate of shows in consideration for the 2014/2015 season by the Season Planning Committee.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
We are proud to announce that for the 14th consecutive year we are not charging a submission fee! To enter you must complete an entry form and submit it along with three (3) copies of each script to the address below. We request that copies of the plays be printed double-sided to save on paper, mailing costs, and storage. Authors located outside North America that might be interested in submitting their plays via e-mail should contact us at jim@chameleontheatre.org.

If you are submitting a musical, also include three (3) copies of a CD of the music or three (3) copies of the score. Do not bind any author identification with your scripts. We will distribute the scripts "blind" to our readers for complete objectivity. Include the show's title on at least the first bound page. Once the winning scripts have been chosen, we will disclose the playwrights' identity to our readers (and the world).

We do not accept plays that have been previously produced. We do accept plays that have had workshops and other readings. Receipt of play(s) will be acknowledged by e-mail only upon request. Scripts are non-returnable.

As in past years, this year's contest will have multiple categories:

TEN-MINUTE PLAYS
Three to five winners will receive $25 each plus a reading at the New Play Festival. All short plays will be entered in this contest. Generally, scripts of about 15 pages or less will fall into this category.

ONE-ACT
One to three winners will receive $50 each plus a reading at the New Play Festival. Any play that can be joined with one or two other shows of similar length to make up a complete evening of theatre will be entered in this contest. Generally, scripts of about 20-60 pages will fall into this category.

FULL-LENGTH
One to two winners will receive $100 plus a reading at the New Play Festival. Any play that can constitute a complete evening of theatre will be entered in this contest. It is important to note that these shows can be one, two, or more acts, as long as it makes up a complete evening of theatre

MUSICALS
If five or more musicals are submitted, the theatre reserves the right to create a "musical" category. Musicals are defined as any original play using original or rights permitted musical dialogue to further the story and/or the characters. In the absence of enough qualifying scripts, or if the theatre determines not to create an additional category, any musical will be entered into the appropriate category as defined above

THEATRE-FOR-YOUTH
If five or more plays intended for and/or by youth are submitted, the theatre reserves the right to create a "theatre-for-youth" category. Theatre-for-youth plays are defined as any original play intended for young audiences, young participants, or both. In the absence of enough qualifying scripts, or if the theatre determines not to create an additional category, any theatre-for-youth submission will be entered into the appropriate category as defined above

OVERALL CONTEST WINNER/AUDIENCE FAVORITE WINNER
At the theatre's discretion, we reserve the right to designate or not designate an "Overall Contest Winner" from any category and an "Audience-Favorite Winner" from any category at the conclusion of the New Play Festival. No additional prize money is awarded, just bragging rights.

The Nick Darke Award

web site

The Nick Darke Award was set up in 2006 by his late wife, the artist and film maker Jane Darke, with the support of his family.

It is open to all writers and the winner will receive the prize money of £6,000 to provide the time to write that financial support facilitates.

Writers are asked to submit work on an environmental theme in recognition of Nick's lifelong commitment to this issue. The word environmental may, however, be broadly interpreted.

Nick Darke wrote in many forms but earned his living in the world of theatre, screen and radio. As this award is intended to contribute financially to the life of a writer, the award is in one of these disciplines:

  • Stage play
  • Screenplay (feature film or short film)
  • Radio play

The award is solely funded by the Departments of Media, Performance and Writing at Falmouth University, offering undergraduate and postgraduate, traditional and online courses.

  • The application must be made in English.
  • The competition is open to all writers aged 16 and over.
  • The writer must be the sole original author.
  • The competition is not open to collaborations.
Please tell us if you have any communication requirements and what these are (for example a preference for material in large print or a need for everything on audio CD).

Criteria

The theme is the environment; entrants may interpret the theme widely.
The work must be within one of the following three categories:
— Stage play
— Screenplay (feature film or short film)
— Radio play
  • Please state clearly which category your submission falls within.
  • Please submit an outline of your story idea (theatre, radio play, feature film, short film) in 750 words suggesting character, plot and structure and pitch it in 25 words or less.
  • Please also submit 20 pages which are representative of your work; this can be
  • from an existing or new piece of work.
  • Enclose a CV with your submission (this will help the judges to find out more about you), and include your contact details. If you fail to do so your application will not be considered.
  • Do not include any supporting material such as DVDs, photos, CDs, etc.
  • Submission copies will not be returned. Please retain a copy of your work for your records.

NYCPlaywrights testimonial

NYCPlaywrights received these kind works recently:
I'm G.D. Kimble, an actor/playwright here in NYC.
Some months ago, I stumbled onto your site-- and since then, I check it every single day. It's become part of my daily routine--- I even have it bookmarked in my smartphone.
I submit to the notices regularly and-- I have to say-- I've had incredible success. Just in the coming weeks and months, I have two productions on the way (both of which are very high profile and huge breaks for me):
My one act: TWO IRISHMEN ARE DIGGING A DITCH goes up for one night only at the Arthur Seelen Theatre in NYC on Thursday, April 18, as part of The Glass Eye's Fresh Produce'd Series. The same play goes up on July 5, in St. Louis at the Gaslight Theatre as part of the St. Louis Actors' Studio's LaBute Festival

None of that would have been possible without NYCP, and I've made more headway in the last few months than in 6 1/2 years of living and working here.
best,
G.D. Kimble, Brooklyn
Congratulations to G. D. Kimble and thanks for sharing this with us - it's great to know the web site is useful to playwrights.

Poison Apple Initiative is accepting submissions

web site

Poison Apple Initiative is accepting submissions of unproduced, production-ready work to premiere during its 2013-2014 season. Work that has received readings or workshops is encouraged.

ELECTRONIC SUBMISSIONS ONLY.

Please include:
-A .doc or .pdf copy of the script.
-A title page with contact information and a brief synopsis.

A few things:

-We tend to favor intermission-less plays. We think an hour-twenty is the perfect amount of theatre.

-Small, female-heavy casts requiring actors in the 18-40 age range are preferable.

-A PAI play has a dark sense of humor, a jagged bite, a bright imagination, and immediate social relevance on a large scale. "Kitchen sink" (featuring the returns of prodigal children, the sobering loss of a parent, or families being ripped asunder by dark secrets unearthed) isn't our bag. If it can be effectively filmed, it's not for us.

-No musicals, children's plays, or translations. Adaptations are welcome if they are less faithful and more a response to the original text (think Phaedra's Love by Sarah Kane.)

Selected playwrights will receive an honorarium of $450.

Please send submissions/ any questions to: poisonappleinitiative@gmail.com

Center of the World Festival Playwriting Contest

NOTE: there is a "suggested minimal donation of $10.00" on script submission but the donation is NOT a requirement for script submissions.

Community Readers Theatre August 16-18, 2013

$500 Grant Award!

10-Minute Play with an Eco-Drama, Peace, Justice or other social issue theme. Submissions are accepted from October 1, 2012 to April 30, 2013.  Use your gifts to give social justice a voice.

The play theme for Season 2013 must adhere to Social issue topics, such as ecology, justice, peace, equality, crime prevention, freedom of speech, etc.
For example, can your play contribute to an answer to any of these questions?
  • How can we facilitate environmental justice and sustainability in our community, our nation, our world?
  • What is the new vision, a new approach, to resolving the social challenges which face our families, jobs, communities, or nation?
  • Are the crises in our world "normal" and a "part of life" to which we just have to resign ourselves and let "people in power" handle for us?
  • Does "every person" have any power to change the negative social direction towards which the fear and violence perpetrating political systems are taking us?
Your play may be an imaginative journey into harmony between humankind and nature.  Or, it may be based upon real-life experiences.  Or, it may be a combination of both. Suggestions: The swapping of tales with colleagues--the journeys of your own life--interviews held with others--all represent the dramatic scenes through which the "every person" innately connects with natural knowing revealed to us "on the spot" as the way to interact with nature and each other.

We believe that social CHANGE is possible for the challenging social issues facing our world.  We believe that theatre plays a powerful role in this change, providing a meeting ground for exploring alternative solutions.  Story-telling is mankind's oldest format for social education.  Through the sharing of stories, which facilitate community dialogue, we build understanding and inspire social change.
We are not seeking "eco-warrior" approaches to the social problems.  We do not wish to engage in a negative political process or radical activism.  Nor is this a quest for "enlightenment" of the population.  Give us real problems and real solutions--an "every person" approach to creating peace and harmony with our environment and ourselves.
In life, there is not always an immediate solution to a situation.  So, in your play, the solution may not be realized.  But the process of thinking, of criticizing, observing, and trying to find solutions will help in ending the paralysis of fatalism, that we cannot do anything to change the environmental and social destruction in our world.  Your play should contribute to changing the audience member from being a mere spectator to someone who awakens and questions:  Is it good or not, do I agree or not.  And most importantly, causes the observer to say:  Yes, I CAN do that!
We believe that equality and inclusion are necessary for confronting and resolving the violence which surrounds us and is threatening to destroy our world.  Thus, this playwrighting competition is for all amateurs, of all ages, to contribute their vision for a civilization which lives in harmony with nature and each other.  It is not a competition of "best construction" or conventional play presentation.  Abstract and experimental formats are welcomed as a way to express social values.
Remember, AMATEUR is the operative description of this playwright competition.  We define AMATEUR in its positive Latin and French roots, meaning:  "to love; a lover".  We see you, the AMATEUR, as a devoted friend, an enthusiastic pursuer of an objective, and one who is motived to work as a result of love and passion.  And further, in the meaning of Ralph Waldo Emerson, as one who performs for pleasure rather than money:  "Every artist is first an amateur."

This Playwrighting competition is open to "every person" without age and geographic restriction, but honoring all laws relating to citizenship and under-age minors participation. Non-citizens must certify legal right to participate in this competition. Minors (children to age 18 years) must have signed parental consent.

Competition is restricted to English language submissions only.

No collaborations are accepted--single authorship only.

There are no contractual obligations, or royalties paid to playwrights whose scripts are selected as finalists or competition winning plays for the Festival. However, all finalists will receive recognition awards. Grant Award is $500.

The Festival is a charity fund-raising event for Center of the World Festival, Inc. (hereafter COWFEST).  COWFEST is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation.  As a public charity, all contributions and donations made to COWFEST are tax-deductible under section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code. COWFEST sponsors special events for charitable purposes. For further donation information, please see our profile at Kern Community Foundation-- Click Here.

Script submission donation: There is a suggested minimal donation of $10.00, payable by check to Center of the World Festival, Inc.  Send donation with submitted scripts. These donations are used to pay for the advertising expenses associated with conducting this Festival. No donation is expected from under-age minor amateur playwrights nor adult hardship cases.

The play must be original and unpublished and unproduced in any type of setting or venue.

The play must be complete in and of itself and not be an incomplete fragment (such as a monologue, etc.) taken from a longer play nor an adaptation of another person's material already published.  However, edited (shorten versions) of your own work may be accepted, if source is identified and available for comparison.  Adaptations of public domain material, published before year 1900, may be considered if source is identified.

The play must be appropriate for readers’ theatre presentation (no elaborate sets or stage directions).  Please read the section on Readers Theatre for more information.

We do not conduct, nor send, written evaluations of scripts to playwrights.

Play theme must adhere to Social issue topics, such as ecology, justice, peace, equality, crime prevention, freedom of speech, etc.  See Theme Rules for more details.

The Festival is for a General Audience base. DO NOT SUBMIT "Mature Audience Only" material. Please consider general audience for appropriate language in your script dialogue.

The plays are limited to 10-minute scripts, which are about ten pages long. Some flexibility: no shorter than 8 minutes and no longer than 12 minutes.

The Play Submission Form must be used as the cover page. The next page shall be the Play Title Sheet, which includes the title of the play, the playwright's name, the list of characters, and setting. Playwright's Agreement also must be signed and sent with your script.

Play must be typewritten (or Word Processed) on 8.5" by 11" paper. Pages should be secured only with a removable binder clip (no staples). Please number each page of the play. The play must be typed in standard play format, using one side of each page only.

You may submit three plays for consideration. However, only one play per author will be chosen as a finalist. A separate submission donation is requested for each different play.

Only "hard-copy" paper "snail-mail" submitted applications are accepted.
E-Mail scripts will not be accepted. Send to:

The Center of the World Festival
P.O. Box 1929
Frazier Park, CA 93225-1929

If you wish to be notified that script was received, please enclose self-addressed, stamped envelope. Do not send manuscripts by certified mail, or signature required.

Please retain your original and send us only one (1) printed copy. COWFEST will keep this copy in its private archives to validate non-profit mission fulfillment. You give permission for sufficient copies to be made by Festival staff to fulfill the preliminary reading, Festival production, and other requirements for cast, staff, and directors. PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR ORIGINAL COPY!

You may wish to copyright your material. Check writers' guides for more information, or visit www.copyright.gov

Deadline for play submission is April 30, 2013. All submissions will be judged by reader/actors of Free Speech Zone Theatre, a non-professional community reader’s theatre in Pine Mountain Club, California.

Finalists will be announced by June 30, 2013. All playwrights will be notified of the results.  For further information, read section on Selection Process.

Should your play be selected as a finalist, you are giving the non-exclusive right to the Center of the World Festival to produce and perform the play in readers theatre format from August 16 through August 18, 2013. We encourage the playwright (or a proxy) to be in attendance at this Festival production.

Playwrights will retain copyright and full ownership of their plays. Playwrights will receive sole credit for writing their play.

No changes will be made to the script without permission of the playwright.  The director shall be the sole person to give cast and crew notes of production; however, playwrights may give any notes regarding the play production to the director.

After the play is accepted as a finalist, the play may not be withdrawn for any reason. If you are concerned about the quality of production by an amateur readers theatre, please do not submit for this Festival.

The play chosen for grant award will be determined by the spectator audience of the Festival.

At this time, we are not accepting phone calls. If you would like to talk to someone personally about the Festival, please send a letter with your submission, explaining your questions. Or contact us by e-mail at the link on this website. Please provide a phone number, e-mail or fax number, and the best times to reach you by phone. We will contact you as soon as possible.

As part of the investigation, her strange travels take her to Buckingham Palace and to the real fountain of youth hidden in the swamps of Eastern Florida.  Knowing the power of the curse, will Alexa take the one drink from the fountain that will give her eternal youth?  The characters Alexa encounters range from a mysterious old woman and a crusty Spanish sailor to a former super model, and everything in between.  The performance combines storytelling narrative with rapid-fire dialogue as Ms. de la Puente moves quickly from one character to the next.

Playscripts, Inc. submission guidelines

web site

Playscripts, Inc. selects a wide variety of new plays for publication: short plays and full-length plays; comedies, dramas, and plays that defy genre; plays perfect for high schools, large professional theaters, or any number of other groups who want to create outstanding theater.

Before you submit work to Playscripts, we strongly encourage you to visit our Playwright Services page and our Submissions FAQ for more detailed information about what we do.

In deciding what to submit for Playscripts' consideration, please keep in mind that we are looking for certain kinds of plays in particular:

If your play contains adult content, and is intended for adult audiences, then it must have already received at least one fully staged professional production with published reviews.
                 OR
If your play does not contain adult content, and could therefore be appropriate for high schools or middle schools, then prior productions and a large cast size are advantageous, but not required.

You may submit any number of plays that fit what we are looking for.

Electronic submissions are strongly preferred. For instructions on hard copy query letters, see the very bottom of this page.

Although we do publish and license musicals, the limitations of time and staff prevent us from accepting unsolicited musical submissions.

We do not accept screenplays.

Your play must not include material that you do not have permission to use.

Your play must not be previously published as part of an exclusive arrangement. (Note that most anthology and magazine publications are non-exclusive, and therefore do not pose a problem. If you are unsure, please contact us before submitting.)

Do not submit a play that is incomplete, unfinished, or a rough draft. Send us the entire completed play.

Playscripts has no problem with you submitting your play to other publishers simultaneously. If you receive a competing publication offer before hearing back from us, however, please let us know before signing a contract. This way we can expedite our evaluation, and you might be able to weigh more than one publication offer.

If you do decide to sign with another publisher while your play is still under consideration by Playscripts, you must let us know immediately, so that we do not waste resources evaluating a play that we cannot publish.

While we do not insist on one particular script format, your play should be clearly formatted and easily readable.

You do not need to register your play with the U.S. Copyright Office prior to submitting it. Playscripts will register any previously unregistered work in the event of publication. In any event, your work is automatically protected under copyright law from the moment you write it down.

Once you submit a play using the form here, we will contact you immediately via email to confirm that we have received it.

Please do not follow up, unless you have a competing publication offer to report. While we may be able to expedite our decision in the event of a competing publication offer, other follow-up inquiries will not accelerate the evaluation process.

The evaluation period lasts 3-6 months. Playscripts will always respond with a decision, either offering or declining to publish your play. If you haven't heard back from us after six months have elapsed, please let us know.

The Black Ship Co. is currently seeking plays for our 2013-2014 season. We're based in Chicago, our focus is on new works, and we're primarily looking for plays that have had fewer than 5 productions. You can learn more about us at blackshipco.org

This upcoming season will include fully produced plays, workshops, and a reading series. All plays sent to us will be considered for all three unless you specifically request otherwise.

For this season, we're seeking plays with a touch of the absurd, imaginary, or the magical. We're talking everything from tall tales & urban legends to new myths & folk heroes.

We're also going to be launching a Children's Theater Summer Series, and are seeking plays for that as well. For that, we are searching for 40-60 minute plays that stretch the imagination and contain characters whose struggles inspire adults and children alike to the better parts of humanity. Put simply, "Ad astra per aspera."

If you have any questions, please contact our literary manager at  andrew.coil@blackshipco.org

We stage new, short works as though they were going to be put up in a black box space, then film the for distribution free online for anyone to view. If you're curious, you can check out our completed Black Curtain projects here: http://blackshipco.org/black-curtain

NYCPlaywrights April 2013 Play of the Month

Submissions are no longer being accepted for the NYCPlaywrights April 2013
Play of the Month.

The selections will be announced soon

The theme is "Spring Cleaning" There could be an actual spring cleaning, or the play could deal with renewal/new beginnings. Although if you could have both that would be awesome.

The deadline is Sunday, March 31, 2013 at 11:59 PM EDT.

This time we are doing something a little different - we are picking up to five plays of the month. We received many good plays for February and it was a shame that we could only select one.

We will video-record readings of all the plays selected, and the videos will be posted (with author permission) to the NYCPlaywrights web site.

THE RULES - YOU MUST READ THEM BEFORE SUBMITTING A PLAY

~ Send only one ten-minute play per author to info@nycplaywrights.org

~ The script must be submitted by the author of the script, no agents or others may submit.

~ The script submission should be sent by email, with the play itself as a file attached to the email. File format should be in either Microsoft Word (.doc) or pdf. Most preferable is .pdf (Portable Document Format) because it will retain your original script
formatting.

~ The script can be no longer than 10 pages (not including title page, setting info page, etc. - pages will be counted only from where the actual stage directions and dialog begin.)

~ The script should be in standard playscript format. If you are not sure what that is, see this page on the NYCPlaywrights web site:

~ Plays that are not in standard format, or that have more than 10 pages (not counting title page, etc.) will be rejected immediately.

~ Make sure you have your name and your email address on the title page of the script.

~ Plays can be from anybody, anywhere in the world, but must be primarily in English (a few non-English phrases are acceptable, but the phrases must include English translations in production notes or stage directions.)

~ There is no fee for submission.

~ The NYCPlaywrights selection decision is final and NYCPlaywrights reserves the right to select no plays from those submitted.

~ A play that has had a production is acceptable.

~ A play that has been published is not acceptable.

~ All rights will remain with the playwright.

~ There is no monetary compensation.

~ The selected play(s) will be video-recorded and posted April or May 2013.

~ Video recording(s) of the play(s) will be posted to the NYCPlaywrights YouTube account and from there embedded into the NYCPlaywrights blog. The playwright(s) will be asked to review the video recording and approve it before it is made public.

~ The play must reflect the month's theme in some meaningful way.

~ The play should be a complete 10-minute play, not an excerpt from a longer work.

Any questions email info@nycplaywrights.org
