NYCPlaywrights October 2012 Play of the Month

Submissions are now being accepted for the October 2012 Play of the Month.

The theme is "Amendments to the U.S. Constitution." The play must involve an issue addressed by one of the 27 Amendments to the U.S. Constitution in some significant way.

The best-known of the Amendments are the 1st - freedom of speech; the 2nd - the right to bear arms; the 5th - right to due process and against self-incrimination; the 13th - outlawing of slavery;  the 18th - prohibition; and the 19th - women's right to vote.

For all 27 Amendments see the Wikipedia list:

The deadline is Sunday, September 30, 11:59 PM EDT.
  1. Send only one ten-minute play per author to info@nycplaywrights.org
  2. The script submission should be sent by email, with the play itself as a file attached to the email. File format should be in either Microsoft Word (.doc) or pdf. Most preferable is .pdf (Portable Document Format) because it will retain your original script formatting.
  3. The script can be no longer than 10 pages (not including title page, setting info page, etc. - pages will be counted only from where the actual on-stage directions and dialog begin.)
  4. The script should be in standard playscript format. If you are not sure what that is, see this page on the NYCPlaywrights web site: http://nycp.blogspot.com/p/playscript-formatting-template.html
Plays that are not in standard format, or that have more than 10 pages (not counting title page, etc.) will be rejected immediately.
  5. Make sure you have your name and your email address on the title page of the script.
  6. Plays can be from anybody, anywhere in the world, but must be primarily in English (a few non-English phrases are acceptable, but the phrases must include English translations in production notes or stage directions.)
  7. There is no fee for submission.
  8. The writer of the selected play will be awarded $10.
  9. The NYCPlaywrights selection decision is final and NYCPlaywrights reserves the right to select no plays from those submitted.
  10. The play must have been written by the person making the submission.
  11. A play that has had a production is acceptable.
  12. A play that has been published is not acceptable.
  13. All rights will remain with the playwright.
  14. The selected play will be video recorded and posted during the month of October 2012.
  15. The video recording of the play will be posted to the NYCPlaywrights YouTube account and from there embedded into the NYCPlaywrights blog. The playwright will be asked to review the video recording and approve it before it is made public.
  16. The play must reflect the month's theme in some meaningful way.
  17. The play should be a complete 10-minute play, not an excerpt from a longer work.
NOTE: The play recordings may be anything from a script-in-hand reading to a movie-like production. To get an idea of what the possibilities are for the video recordings of the selected scripts see the page on the NYCPlaywrights web site with samples of past readings of Plays of the Month: http://nycp.blogspot.com/p/play-of-month.html

Family’s not the most important thing: it's everything.

A New Play by Deanna Jent

Directed by Lori Adams

Minetta Lane Theatre - 18 Minetta Lane (one block south of West 3rd Street, just off of Sixth Avenue)
Falling is a new drama about how 18-year-old Josh, who has autism, affects the lives of everyone around him. When a relative comes to visit, the entire family is thrown out of equilibrium, with everyone trying to balance what is best for the family and what is best for them. Who will be there to catch you? Lori Adams directs a cast that features Daniel Everidge (Grease, Fat Camp), Celia Howard, Daniel Pearce (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee on Broadway), Jacey Powers (Our Town) and Julia Murney (Wicked, Drama Desk nominee for Andrew Lippa’s The Wild Party).

“A gripping piece of theatre, emotionally wrenching and theatrically astute…Like many other plays (Awake and Sing!, A Thousand Clowns, The Three Sisters), it’s a thoughtful portrait of a family struggling to hold on in particular and challenging circumstances.      You don’t want to miss it…” - St. Louis Post-Dispatch

NYCPlaywrights September 2012 Play of the Month: THE LOST MELODY by Bridgette Portman

Thanks to Bridgette Portman and cast members Tim Lueke and David Lamberton for their great work.

Bridgette Portman on the play

This play was partially inspired by a true story -- I had an old cassette tape containing a beautiful piece of classical music I couldn't identify. The frustration involved in trying to track down the title and composer of that piece was something I tried to magnify and channel into the character of Anthony.  Then, as his backstory emerged, the music became symbolic of something else. I originally wrote the play as part of the "31 Plays in 31 Days" challenge (http://31plays31days.com/), but also had this competition in mind. I'm thrilled to have been selected as the play of the month!

  • Adaptations of novels and short stories are acceptable. Adaptations of movies and stage scripts are not acceptable.
  • If you have submitted a particular title in a previous year, it may be submitted again if and only if you have made significant revisions to the script since it was last submitted. It would be best if you explained this in a cover letter so we wouldn’t have to contact you for verification.
  • No scripts will be returned.

TWO “hard” copies of script on white paper are required. One or two-sided paper format is the author’s choice. All pages much be standard 3-hole punched, or better yet, in a binder.

PlayPenn new play development conference

web site

Beginning on September 4, PlayPenn is accepting applications for its 2013 new play development conference and we are pleased to request your full length, unproduced script for consideration. Application materials will be accepted between September 4 and September 30, 2012. Your application must be uploaded and complete by September 30, 2012 or it cannot be considered.

The 2013 conference will be held in Philadelphia, PA from July 12 – 28 at the Adrienne Theatre in Philadelphia, PA. Invited playwrights will have the opportunity to work with a director, dramaturg, designer and Philadelphia-based, professional actors over a 17 day period that allows for 29 hours of rehearsal and staged reading time along with ample time to reflect and write.

The work will be preceded by a three-day pre-conference retreat (July 12 – 14) that will help in laying the collaborative groundwork for the development time ahead. The conference concludes with public staged readings that are intended as a part of the process, giving playwrights an opportunity to measure the efficacy of their work and provide an opportunity to gauge the work ahead.

PlayPenn will provide travel for casting for both writer and director, travel to and from the conference, housing, per diem and a stipend.

Applicants should be aware that we are a development conference rather than a festival or showcase for new work. The distinction is important and meaningful to us in the current climate of the increasing commercialization of play development. We seek to avoid participation in what has become known as "development hell" by fostering an environment in which risk is rewarded and honest assessment is provided and encouraged. TO THAT END, WE FOCUS ON THE NEEDS OF THE TEXT. THE END-OF-CONFERENCE READING IS INTENDED TO PRESENT A GLIMPSE INTO HOW THE TEXT LIVES OFF THE PAGE RATHER THAN HOW THE HOW THE PLAY MIGHT BE STAGED IN PRODUCTION.

To apply go to the following link – http://www.literarymanager.org/submit_step_one_u.php?t=8

Please follow the instructions to upload your play into our system. Because script reading by our evaluators is a blind process, you must include the following documents, absent your name or any identifying information. Because the data base identifies you through your registration, NO NAME SHOULD BE INCLUDED ON ANY DOCUMENT, INCLUDING YOUR RESUME.

1. An original script in .pdf format with no identifying indicators (no name on the document). Applications that are submitted in non-pdf format will not be considered
2. Your current resume (pdf) (no name on the document)
3. A casting breakdown and the number of actors required (pdf) (no name on the document)
4. The play's development and production history (pdf) (no name on the document). Plays that have been produced or that have been through an extended development process are not eligible. Plays that have had readings are eligible.
5. An articulation of your goals for the development process using the resources offered by PlayPenn (pdf) (no name on the document).

PlayPenn does not accept applications by agents.
And as stated above, applicants should be aware that we are a development conference rather than a festival or showcase for new work.

Your application must be uploaded and complete by midnight September 30, 2012 or it cannot be considered.

Looking forward to reading your work,

The PlayPenn Staff

Kudos, Red-Handed Otter

Congratulations to the Playwrights Realm for the good review in the NYTimes for their production of RED-HANDED OTTER. You can jump right to the show web site by clicking the RED-HANDED OTTER ad on the right-hand side of this page.

Charles Isherwood writes in his review:

If your favorite time killers include overindulging in cute kitty videos on the Web — you know who you are, and you are legion — you will surely lend a sympathetic ear to the befuddled and bereaved hero of “Red-Handed Otter,” a modest but nicely observed comedy by Ethan Lipton that opened on Thursday night at the Cherry Lane Theater, in a production from the Playwrights Realm.
Paul (Matthew Maher, of Annie Baker’s “Uncle Vanya”), who works as a security guard, has just lost his beloved cat, Jennifer, who was a youthful 17. Sitting zombie-eyed before a bank of monitors as the hours crawl by, poor Paul cannot help brooding on the world’s cruelty, responding to all attempts at cheering him up with bitter gusts of self-pity.
“I mean, I’ve had other cats,” he says with exacting clarity. “As a kid we had cats, they were great cats, but compared to Jennifer? If you just look at it objectively? We’re talking about one of the best cats in history!”

1. Scripts must be standard sized, legibly typed, and bound. Standard Dramatist Guild form is preferred.

2. Submissions (ONE per playwright) must be full length and should include a one-page synopsis and a cast list with brief character descriptions.

3. A play may not have had a previous professional or university production.

4. Scripts are not returnable (unless specifically requested and accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope).

5. Enclose a self-addressed stamped postcard if you wish the project director to acknowledge receipt of your script.

6. All rights must be fully owned by the author.

7. No children’s theatre, one-acts, or reader’s theatre pieces will be considered. Adaptations will be considered only if the adapted work is in the public domain.

8. in deciding which play to submit, a writer should know our actors will be students ranging in age from 17-30. Some faculty members or guest artists may be available for the festival. However, a play with especially strong demands for mature character roles would not be as likely for selection as one of equal quality with roles for young adults.

9. Musicals with small orchestra demands will be considered. Musicals should be submitted only if a vocal score and piano conductor score is available.

10. A Y.E.S. entry form must accompany a submitted script - see this flyer (PDF Format.)

11. Scripts may be submitted from May 1 until September 30, 2012 to this address:
Northern Kentucky University

13. An honorarium of $500 will be awarded to each selected playwright as well as travel expenses and housing while attending the festival.

14. it is important that selected playwrights be available to visit the festival about a week before opening so their visit can be arranged to include late rehearsals and the premiere of their play. Festival dates are April 11-21, 2013. The visiting dates are at the discretion of the festival. Playwrights and the directors of their plays will participate in one post-show question-and-answer session with the audience.

15. in addition to the three plays selected for full productions, one script may be selected for a staged reading during the festival. The playwright of this script will also be brought in for late rehearsals and opening.
