American Harmony Prize

web site

Curtain Call is proud to announce the return of the American Harmony Prize, an annual award that celebrates diverse new works of musical theater. The goal of the American Harmony Prize is to showcase new musicals that explore our country's many ethnic, religious and gender identifications.

The fifth annual American Harmony Prize will showcase a new musical that dramatizes an aspect of the experience of Asian Americans. Asian American characters have rarely been featured centerstage in American musicals. But, with projects like The Wedding Banquet (from Next to Normal's Brian Yorkey) and Allegiance (the story of a Japanese American family during World War II and the years of the U.S. internment) in the works, their stories have begun to be told.

In addition to a cash award of $500.00 (funded in part by Stamford Gives Back), a 60-minute concert reading of highlights from the winning musical will be performed in Curtain Call's Kweskin Theater on February 6, 2012 at 7:30 pm. In order to qualify for consideration, a musical cannot have been professionally produced (Equity Dinner, LORT, Production, Special Production, SPT, Stock, etc.) or published. All other forms of developmental performance, including readings, concerts, workshops. festivals and nonprofessional productions, will not disqualify you – and are, in fact, encouraged!

Submissions will be accepted via mail from Monday, September 19, 2011 until Saturday, October 15, 2011. Submissions postmarked after Saturday, October 15, 2011, will ineligible for consideration. We are not able to receive electronic submissions at this time. Your submission should include:
1. A plot synopsis of 800 words or fewer (or roughly two pages).
2. 10 continuous pages of the libretto (with all dialogue, lyrics and stage directions included).
3. A cd that demonstrates as much of the musical's score as has been recorded to date. (It needn't be of studio quality.)
4. One sample of the sheet music for a song from the show's piano / vocal score.
5. A self-addressed, stamped envelope if you wish to have your materials returned. (If not, they will be recycled after the judging.)

Note: there is no submission / reading fee.

Submissions should be mailed to:
Curtain Call, Inc.
1349 Newfield Avenue
Stamford, CT 06905
Attn. American Harmony Prize

Short-listed applicants will be asked to submit additional materials after Friday, November 11, 2011. Additional materials postmarked after Saturday, November 19, 2012, will ineligible for final consideration. The winner of the 2012 American Harmony Prize will be announced mid-January, 2012, at www.CurtainCallinc.com.

T. Schreiber Studio Presents the 2012 New Works Project

web site

Mission Statement:

The T. Schreiber Studio New Works Project is committed to supporting the development of new plays in a safe and nurturing environment-one that serves the playwright and enriches the T. Schreiber Studio community as a whole. The studio provides the playwright access to the expertise of experienced theatre professionals, sophisticated and well trained actors, and a supportive, interactive, audience. In, the New Works Project, T. Schreiber will develop new theatrical productions through a series of staged readings and collaborative refinement, culminating in a professional workshop production. The goal is to foster and elevate writers’ work to its fullest potential.

The winning play will receive two staged readings, in Winter and Spring, 2012, performed by T. Schreiber Studio actors. To further develop the play, audience feedback is solicited and the production staff of T. Schreiber will work directly with the playwright to refine the production. The New Works project culminates in a workshop production of the winning play for a short run in July 2012. There will be no cash prize provided for the selected play. However, the developmental assistance provided for the selected playwright is invaluable.

The New Works Project is committed to script development and successful production of new works. Winning playwrights are expected to participate fully in the development process: working directly with the director and T. Schreiber staff during staged readings; interacting with audiences post-readings; and participating in the workshop production. While T. Schreiber cannot provide transportation or housing to playwrights submitting works from outside the NYC area, every effort will be made to help selected playwrights find local accommodations.

Guidelines:

Submission deadline for the New Works Project is October 1st, 2011.

Submission must be full-length in any genre.

Plays may not have received a full-scale, professional production prior to submission.

Playwrights with past production experience are especially encouraged to submit new work.

Productions should be developed for the stage, not other media: e.g. screenplays or teleplays submitted as theatrical plays.

One script per author.

There is NO submission fee for the New Works Project.

Plays should be between 90 minutes and 2 hours in length.

Do not send more than the materials requested below. No incomplete submissions will be accepted. We do NOT return script or treatment submissions.

Please NO PHONE OR EMAIL inquiries.

Submission is a two-phase process.

Phase I: Submit a two page maximum treatment of the play including title, character breakdown (please include age range and gender), and brief story synopsis. Also include 5 pages of consecutive sample dialogue. Playwrights should also include a one page bio and resume including contact information. All abstracts and dialogue samples will be read. From these, selected manuscripts will be solicited for Phase II by November 1st, 2011.

Due to the expected high volume of submissions, no materials will be returned to playwrights. Do not send a manuscript with or instead of the abstract. Unsolicited manuscripts will not be read. Paper copies must be mailed to T. Schreiber studio at the address listed below.

Phase II: All manuscripts that have been solicited for Phase II will be read and reviewed by the selection committee. Manuscripts should be neatly typed, securely bound and have the playwright’s name, contact address and phone number clearly visible on the front page. No unsolicited manuscripts.

Theatre503 are pleased to announce that we are once again looking for five new playwrights

web site

Theatre503 are pleased to announce that we are once again looking for five new playwrights to become part of the Theatre503 team – to work with us, write for us and inspire us.

This exciting opportunity has helped us evolve the way we work with playwrights and explore ways in which we can place the writer at the centre of what we do at Theatre503. The playwrights will have a creative home in the theatre, with opportunities to engage in every aspect of the theatre’s work and feed the vision of the building.

Each playwright will be supported in writing a first draft commission for the theatre between autumn 2011 and autumn 2012. At least one of the plays will be taken into full production and we have a commitment to finding appropriate production opportunities for all the writers involved. The only commissioning brief is to be ‘fearless’ and to create work that is immediate, responsive and of boundless possibility.

In the first year of the scheme we produced three of the writer commissions in-house, and a short play commissioned by 503 has been developed into a full-length musical, soon to receive a major London production. The remaining playwright received a full production with the Hightide/Old Vic during their participation on the scheme.

We are looking or writers at an early stage in their career, who may have had some playwriting success, but have yet to have a professional production of their work in London or in a major regional venue.

We are asking playwrights to submit to us by Monday 5th September 2011:

1. A sample of their work.

2. A rough idea of what they’d like to write for us.

3. A statement of where they are in their practice, what they would hope to get from working with us

4. What they’d hope to contribute to the theatre.

We will be creating a shortlist of writers at the end of September, with a view to the project starting mid-autumn.

Please make submissions via email only to 503five@theatre503.com

Any queries can also be emailed to literary@theatre503.com

Independent producer seeks to premiere a short original play for a man and a woman in their 20-30s

Independent producer seeks to premiere a short original play for a man and a woman in their 20-30s. Ideally, the play will be about 20-30 minutes in length. Seeking excellent writing, character and story development. There will be no elaborate set design but there will be full use of lights, sound, some props, furniture etc. (what you might expect to find in a standard black box theater and possibly more).

This is for a performance at a known NYC venue as part of a festival. It will be a fully produced production consisting of a short play followed by emotionally-driven dance-theater material in the second half of the show. There are 3 performance dates this month, late August. Marketing/PR is being handled by the venue and also by producer's PR assistant. There is no pay for the playwright at this point but a great deal of exposure and future opportunities in producer's fall season and beyond.

Interested individuals should submit a brief e-mail introducing themselves + a brief synopsis of the play + an excerpt from the play and any pertinent links. Producer will request more info. based on submission. At that point complete details about producer and this opportunity will be disclosed.

HUMOR US

An Evening of

the Sanguine, the Choleric,

the Melancholic, &

the Phlegmatic

Curated by Christie Lee Gibson

Fort Point Theatre Channel seeks your submissions for HUMOR US, the ninth in our Exclamation Point! series of short new works.

Do you have something up your sleeve of a singularly sanguine, choleric, melancholic, or phlegmatic inclination? If so, please send it our way! We seek pieces inspired by any or all of the Four Ancient Humors, from the theory that the human body was filled with four basic substances. When the Four Humors are in balance, a person is healthy. Disease results when they are not.

Please submit one work (or proposal),

maximum 10 minutes in length, to point@fortpointtc.org.

Play of the Month - September 2011

Announcing NYCPlaywrights September 2011 Play of the Month call for submissions.

Send your 10-minute play to NYCPlaywrights.

One play is selected from the submissions for that month and NYCPlaywrights videorecords a reading of the play. The play will be posted on the NYCPlaywrights web site.

For more details about the play of the month project go to this page on the site: play of the month or click the tab at the top of this web page.

Since the NYCPlaywrights web site is viewed by 2,500+ unique visitors per month, there is the potential for many more people to see a reading-performance of the play than at a typical 10-minute play festival.

10-Minute Play of the Month: SEPTEMBER 2011

The theme for September is the tenth anniversary of the 9-11 World Trade Center attacks.

Deadline: Sunday, September 4, 2011, 11:59 PM

1. Send only one ten minute play per author to info@nycplaywrights.org.

2. The script submission should be sent by email, with the play itself as a file attached to the email. File format should be in either Microsoft Word (.doc) or .pdf.

3. The script can be no longer than 10 pages (not including title page, setting info page, etc. but only from where the actual on-stage directions and dialog begin.)

4. The script should be in standard playscript format. If you are not sure what that is, see this page on the NYCPlaywrights web site:

http://nycp.blogspot.com/p/playscript-formatting-template.html

Plays that are not in standard format will be rejected immediately.

5. Make sure you have your name and your email address on the title page of the script.

6. Plays can be from anybody, anywhere in the world, but must be primarily in English (a few non-English phrases are acceptable, but the phrases must include English translations in production notes or stage directions.)

7. There is no fee for submission - and no payment given for the plays selected. Do not send a submission if you are expecting monetary compensation.

8. The NYCPlaywrights selection decision is final and NYCPlaywrights reserves the right to select no plays from those submitted.

9. The selected play will be videotaped as a reading during an NYCPlaywrights meeting and posted shortly after, during the month of September.

10. The playwright will be asked to review the video recording before
it is made public.

11. The video recording of the play reading will be posted to the NYCPlaywrights YouTube account and from there embedded into the NYCPlaywrights blog. The embedded section may be an excerpt of the play reading rather than the entire reading.

12. The play must reflect the month's theme in some meaningful way.

Any questions email Nancy at info@nycplaywrights.org
